The authors describe novel aspects of ground reinforcement and treatment as related to soft ground excavation for tunnels throughout the world. Insitu reinforcement for cut slopes (soil nailing), as underpinning (reticulated micropiles), and as direct tunnel support (infilaggi) is introduced. Ground treatment focuses on new aspects of permeation grouting (by the tube'a manchette system), and on jet grouting-a very powerful and positive new technique. Recent developments in equipment, materials, methods and instrumentation are reviewed, with special reference to major tunnelling projects in Italy and Singapore.

New compound classes previously unknown in flotation practice of non-sulphide ore beneficiation have been developed. The presented study results consider amine salts of alkyl sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonic acid used as primary collectors, N-methyl amides of alkyl phosphoric acids - as auxiliary modifying collectors and pentaerythritole ethers of tall oil - as flotation accelerators. These reagents synthesized from accessible raw material are almost ready for commercial production. Efficiency of the new reagents for various non-sulphide ores has been demonstrated in a series of flotation tests.

Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. The control of high temperature processes requires the ability to measure significant variables during operations. With increasing automatic computerized control there is need for sensors which can provide on-line chemical analyses of all phases present in a reactor without the necessity to withdraw samples from the high temperature reaction zone. Probes using electrochemical cells and conductivity measuring devices have provided the answers to some of these problems, notably the measurement of oxygen in liquid metals, and similar potential systems based on the same fundamental principles for the analysis of non-metallic and metallic elements appear feasible. In this discussion, the state-of-the-art in chemical sensors will be discussed in terms of the potential materials of construction, and, in some cases, the limitations of upper temperature at which some promising systems can, at present, be applied. It is concluded that a new phase of basic research could improve the outlook substantially by providing solutions for some problems in chemical sensors which are now well-defined.

BOB FALCONER: Our next topic leader is Scott Lawson. Scott is manager of human resources for Independence Mining Company, Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company, Victor, Colorado. Scott has 25 years of human resources management experience in the mining industry, surface and underground, precious and base metals. His topic this morning is "It's the Employee That Counts." SCOTT LAWSON: When reviewing the topic of productivity in a union versus nonunion workplace, we need to look at who, and not what, can make the difference in ensuring the success of a production-oriented operation. It's not explicitly whether the property is unionized or not, but whether the employee team (including the "management group") is working together to accomplish common, shared, and meaningful goals. The bottom line is what action or actions can be taken to develop trust and to strengthen working relationships that challenge and compel employees to willingly share their particular areas of expertise. I want to share a real-life experience that happened to me during the summer of 1961. Perhaps some of you will be able to relate to the following story. I was an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, ready for my first true work adventure. I found summer employment for myself and two friends with the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. Our jobs were as laborers, laying ties and rails, and unloading ballast. We made $2.62 an hour. We were fat cats! My friends and I took on the job with a great deal of vigor, to the dismay of our fellow workers. These workers were unionized by the Railway Workers, which I believe were affiliated with the Teamsters. Talk about being naive, we wrote the book in 1961. When we took the jobs, we did not realize the employees were represented by a union, even though we didn't think they worked too hard. Within our first two weeks of work, we established new daily records for laying virtually twice as many ties as had been standard, and we nearly tripled production by the end of our hall of fame railroad careers. We even took naively to the next level by lining up the ties for our afternoon work shift during our lunch break. In 1961, we thought we were the Mantle, Maris, and Colavito of tie laying. For the younger set in the audience, we would have felt like the McGwire, Griffey Jr., and "The Big Hurt" Thomas of tie laying. A section of the union contract allowed for a 60-day probationary period during which the employee was evaluated and also exempt from joining the union. Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

Western Energy Co.'s Rosebud mine in Colstrip, MT, has implemented innovative mining techniques in the past,* and following in that tradition, new techniques for overburden removal were recently introduced at the Montana coal mine. In April 1979, falling coal production left Western Energy in a bind. At that time the company was one of the first to implement a dozer/scraper stripping system for additional stripping capacity. This time around, however, the challenge was to eliminate spoil rehandle with a dragline while digging down 33 in. "Rehandle will increase 20% by going down an additional 3 m past the 24-m level," according to Bob Cope, mine supervisor for Western Energy. To cut this additional expense by eliminating the need to rehandle, Western now uses scrapers to bench down for the dragline. This system utilizes the flexibility of scrapers as earthmoving tools. Although scrapers were originally purchased to fill an immediate need for productive, low-cost overburden stripping, they are now benching and continue to optimize the overall effectiveness of existing draglines. According to the company, the draglines couldn't keep up with production requirements if they had to rehandle spoil material. Benching with the scrapers eliminates spoil rehandle. Western Energy expects to produce 10.6 Mt of coal this year from three active pits in the Rosebud mine. Western estimates that there are enough coal reserves at Rosebud to support a 40-50 year operation. The sub-biturninous coal has an energy value of 9.2-9.4 Mj, 0.87% sulfur, 8% ash, and 20% moisture. Pit A, approximately 610 m long and 45-55 m wide, is the mine's greatest producer. A Marion 8050 dragline with a 46-ms bucket digs 30-33 m to uncover the 7.3-m Rosebud coal seam. Here, the scrapers were put to work benching for the dragline. Long Construction Co., which operates the mine equipment for Western Energy, uses four Caterpillar 637 tandem-powered scrapers, two Cat 631s and two Terex TS-24s. The number and combination of scrapers actually used for benching periodically changes, depending on which ones are needed for topsoil removal and reclamation. Scrapers benched down about 9 m and removed nearly 2.3 Mm of over-burden at pit A. About 1 Mm was placed in a 9-m lift on top of the high-wall at the head of the pit. The addition of coal preparation plants changed the coal industry during the past. Now it is time co once again improve the quality and types of coal products coming from future coal preparation plants to meet the changing needs of our society. Clean Coal Technology, along with federal support provided, is forcing our industry to provide cleaner coal products for industrial applications. Liquid fuels from coal is just one of many new products from a coal preparation plant that has a ready market in the transportation sector. UCC Research Corporation is developing these new liquid coal products and this paper will describe the progress and the new slate of coal products to be provided from future preparation plants.

Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock, which can be expanded from four to twenty times its original volume when heated at a temperature close to its softening point. The expanded perlite is characterized by increased sound and thermal insulating properties. However, the conventionally expanded perlite products have high porosity and low mechanical properties that limit the range of their applications in the construction and chemical industry. The present work aims at the development of new closed porous microcellular material from perlite with enhanced mechanical and physical properties to be applied in new applications, like joint compounds, functional fillers for special paint types, special blasters and mortars, artificial marble. For the production of these new materials a vertical electrically heated furnace with six different heating zones and controlled gradient temperature profile was used. The effect of major process parameters, like temperature and air flow, on the quality of the produced materials was studied using Greek perlite from Milos Island. The quality of the new products was evaluated in terms of their bulk density, compression strength, water and oil absorption, surface area and pore volume. The experimental results show that the produced materials are characterised by improved mechanical and physical properties compared to the conventionally expanded perlite products.

Xanthates and dithiophosphates are the most commonly used collectors in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Other reagents such as thionocarbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT), mercaptans and xanthogen formates occupy niche positions in industrial collector use. Over the last ten years there has been much activity by chemical companies to develop new collector compositions. The new collectors are aimed at meeting specific process needs such as recovering an increment of valuable metals, improved sulfide separations, increased flotation kinetics, and reducing reagents costs. A review of the patent literature shows that American Cyanamid (Cytec), Dow Chemical, Phillips Petroleum, Sentrachem Ltd., Henkel, Montan Chemicals and Elf Aquitaine, among others, have been active in sulfide collector research. Several companies have achieved considerable success in laboratory and plant tests of the new collectors; however, commercial acceptance for plant usage has been slow. Those most advanced have been plant tested extensively and some are in day-to-day use. The new collector types in this category are: Modified thionocarbamates, dithiophosphinates, organic sulfides, trithiocarbonates, monothiophosphates, and modified thioureas. Others such as substituted mercaptobenzothiazoles and monothiophosphinates have been tested in the laboratory. The chemistry of collectors developed in the last 10 years, their preparation, physical properties and their potential for commercial use are reviewed in this paper.

The mineral industry and individual processing plants are large consumers of energy. While energy conservation has received some attention in the present Federal Administration National Energy Strategy proposal it is obvious that the mineral industry should also continue to emphasize energy consumption reduction for important economic savings alone. As indicated by other studies, comminution is the largest single consumer of energy in the mineral processing plant (1.3% of total electrical energy consumption in the U.S.A.).1 Fine grinding is the largest portion of this amazing statistic. While substantial energy savings have been demonstrated by new machine developments and improved control methods, undoubtedly there are additional areas in comminution where substantial progress can be made. Some time ago, the U.S. Department of Energy published a report on "Comminution and Energy Consumption" by a committee composed of experts in the field of comminution from industry and academia. They identified the following potential for energy savings by specific areas? Classification device design 9-13% Comminution device design 3-16% Control 9% Grinding additive 3-6% Materials 3% It is apparent that the classification device had the first or second highest savings potential. Obviously, serious research consideration must be given to this technology area. A series of three papers have previously been written on the subject of two stage classification research work for ball mill operation by the authors. Accordingly, a brief review will be made. Previous Research Results on Two Stage Classification The hydrocyclone was selected as the type of classification equipment for this study as it represents by far the majority of the devices used in ball milling. While four different hydrocyclone circuits have been proposed by others,3 only two were considered in this work as illustrated in Figure 1. Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. The plant metallurgist would like to maximize the recovery of valuable minerals while maintaining an acceptable grade product. The direct cost of the reagents, while significant, Is only a part of their economic effect. Reagents determine the flotation rates and the selectivity of the mineral separation. In flotation practice, mineral selectivity can be achieved through the addition of various reagents that can control the wettablllty of a particular mineral In the flotation pulp. The reagents which will generally optimize the flotation process are commonly classified Into three distinctive categories: collectors frothers and modifiers. Large tonnages of metal sulphide concentrates which are the source of most of the common base metals are produced economically by fairly standard flotation techniques. The advent of modern technology coupled with the necessity of processing finely disseminated and complex ores of low grade has Increased the need for utilization of non traditional and high selective chemicals reagents for the economic recovery of metals and raw materials. Mining operations in developing countries continue to progress at a rapid growth as many countries mine and process both metallic and nonmetallic ores. The total mine production of base metals, precious metals, Iron ores and coal In developing countries In Africa, Asia and South America has been much higher as compared to the western world production In terms of tonnage and dollar value. Global capital Investments In mining during 1991-95 Is $ 55.1 billion and It Is anticipated that the development of new and specialty reagents may be concentrated In the processing of aluminum , copper, precious metals and Industrial minerals with special reference to potash, phosphates, kaolin and silica sands.(1) The challenge for the design and development of new specialty chemicals Is dependent on Its cost performance and environmental acceptability. Information on the theory and application on the development of mining chemicals has been reviewed In several conference proceedlngs,(2-4) publications(5) and also discussed by several Individual authors.(1,6-10) These publications serve as a comprehensive reference source on the reagents used In several flotation processes. This paper discusses the present trend in the use of specialty mining chemicals In diversified mining operations on several mineral systems with particular reference to sulfide ore systems. The necessity to expose these specialty chemicals through aggressive marketing techniques In mining operations In many developing countries Is also presented. SPECIALTY CHEMICALS Specialty mining chemicals, like other specialty chemicals, share common business characteristics that transcend geographic boundaries. They are manufactured 1n a few selected areas, generally expensive relative to commodity chemicals, shipped and compete globally and usually require specialized knowledge for proper use. Specialty mining chemicals are relative newcomers to chemical markets. The vast majority of mining chemicals are derived from products that are less than two decades old. Traditional collectors and frothers have been available for a considerably longer time. The emphasis on adding value to existing products and byproducts Is responsible for several characteristic features of the mining chemicals business. Most raw materials for these chemicals are related to oil and gas byproducts, chemical refineries, pulp and paper mills and all chemical manufacturers. Until the last several years these operations were located In Industrialized countries, while a significant number of mining chemical users were In developing countries. Therefore International trade In mining chemicals developed through agencies or agents in each particular country.

Introduction The urgency of further development of our domestic energy resources becomes more apparent every day. The production capability of existing facilities, taken in the aggregate, declines perhaps 10% per year; imported energy is expensive if available at all; conservation helps reduce demand but eventually will reach a point of diminishing return; new energy sources are promising but past experience, as with nuclear power, teaches us lead times are long and success is not assured. To approach the energy future rationally, it is essential to have some idea of the size of the nation's remaining energy resources, their characteristics, and the degree of uncertainty involved in their estimates. Resources are, of course, only one end of a long chain leading to energy supply to the ultimate consumer. They are an essential element, however, and the only one not under society's control. Given that the resources and a national will to produce the energy exist, it is possible to convert the resources to supply in, generally, an environmentally reasonable manner. However, the process of developing supply takes time. Government must permit access to the resource, and remunerative prices and further evolution of technlogy are required. This paper does not deal with these essentials, but they must not be forgotten. This discussion is limited to coal, oil, natural gas and gas liquids, uranium, and oil shale. Other energy sources are discussed elsewhere in this issue. Crude Oil Conventional crude oil resources are of greatest concern today, given our dependence on imported oil and its rapidly rising price. Estimates of oil originally in place (OOIP) range from 619 billion bbl to 1,094 billion bbl, differing by almost a factor of two (Table 1). This is surprising because the U.S. is a mature petroleum province with over 120 billion bbl produced and over 400 billion bbl OOIP discovered. Differences in the estimates involve differences in the experience of the various estimators, the interpretation of present geologic information and historical statistics, the methodology, and probably the extent (i.e., water depths) for which offshore resources are included. The range shown for the estimate of a given estimator appears to be primarily due to geologic uncertainty. This uncertainty can be measured by taking the ratio of the low and of the high estimate to the expected estimate for that information source. The low estimates range from 0.85 to 0.87 of their respective values. The high estimates range from 1.18 to 1.27 of the expected values. In all cases the high estimate is further from the expected value than the low,

Field testing of GPS mining applications has confirmed the technical and operational viability of GPS for precise, centimeter-level positioning in harsh taconite environments. GPS hardware has provided consistent availability exceeding 90%, with precision in certain applications of ± 0.07 foot at 95% confidence levels. Despite these technical successes though, challenges persist in achieving effective GPS integration. These challenges include the acceptance of new job tasks by mine personnel, the capacity of typical mine data communications infrastructure and the need to design GPS interfaces for new mining equipment.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within dacite porphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding metasediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in metasediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna. Several new gold discoveries were made in older Early Tertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

The application of briquetting in various chemical, mineral, mining and metallurgical processes has been rapidly increasing in the past two decades. This is, in part, due to the development of new, more economical and higher performance briquetting equipment. Some of these developments, which have reduced the operating and maintenance costs,, include anti-friction bearings, hydraulically applied pressure enclosed and sealed gearing and bearings, tapered predensification feed screws, water cooling and materials of construction capable of operating at temperatures up to 18000F, and control systems capable of maintaining optimum briquette quality control. The briquets can be formed into almost any desired size and shape, To date, with present rotary briquetting presses in the 25 to 500 ton force range, briquets from 1/4" to 6" length are presently being used, some of which are illustrated in Figure No. 1. In force fed rotary briquet machines, these shapes are produced by feeding the material in between a pair of counter rotating rolls, as illustrated in Figure No. 2. The rolls have forming dies indented into their circumferential surface, as illustrated in Figure No. 3.

This paper presents an overview of the New Mississippi Tunnel Outfall for the Transportation Expansion Project (T-REX). The Outfall conveys highway and other urban drainage to the South Platte River as well as provides long needed relief from flooding problems in the southeastern portion of the Interstate 25 highway corridor. The Outfall tunnel incorporates a one-pass precast concrete segmented liner to convey storm water under I-25 then under Mississippi Avenue to the river. The Outfall crosses both the existing I-25 as well as the future improvements including under the Light Rail Transit, a new bridge abutment, widened lanes, and new retaining walls. The Outfall also crosses adjacent to several buildings and five bridges, under major traffic and utility intersections, and through difficult geology.
