The processing strategy for the effective separation of bitumen from low grade (< 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands by a hot water process differs significantly from that used for the processing of high grade (> 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands. Excellent separations (coefficient of separation = 0.9) can be achieved for high grade Utah tar sands by intense hot water digestion followed by a modified froth flotation step. Such a technique is ineffective for low grade tar sands. In order to change the characteristics of the low grade tar sand an attempt was made to enrich the bitumen content of the feed to greater than 10 weight percent by recycle of bitumen concentrate to the digestion stage. However the quality of the separation was not improved under these circumstances. Similarly feed enrichment by heat treating the low grade feed with recycled concentrate prior to digestion did not improve the separation. More successful separations of low grade Utah tar sands were finally achieved by modification of the viscosity of the low grade bitumen with controlled addition of diluent. These results of the hot water separation tests and variations in the quality of separation are interpreted in terms of the physical properties of the bitumen and the surface bonding forces operative at the bitumen-sand interface.

It is common practice in Appalachia, when extending the life of an existing mine, to acquire the adjacent reserves and extend the existing mine into it. Also, often the existing mine is renovated to accommodate the new conditions. The existing mining system and the track and belt haulage systems may be modified while the new property is integrated into the old one. All of these changes create new constraints for the mine ventilation system (M.V.S.) that require proper planning and control procedures. The authors describe and present the study that was carried out for the ventilation system of a newly expanded underground coal mine located in the Appalachian coal region. Discussed first is the process of correcting the ventilation system of the existing mine. Then, some of the stages of controlling the expanded system are discussed. Finally, numerical data for these steps are presented.

A dynamic input-output model for a coal power enterprise that now includes four underground coal mines, three coal washing plants, a power plant and a railway transportation system was developed. The model is applied to analyze investment alternatives for long-term development, including the expansion of existing mines, the opening of new mines, the construction of new coal washing and power plants and the upgrading of the railway system. As a result, the optimal investment strategy with capital schedules and projected sector outputs is obtained. Also, the importance of the new power plant to the strategic development of the company is demonstrated. It is concluded that, without applying a dynamic input-output model, it would be much more difficult or impossible to conduct such a systematic and compete analysis.

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960&apos;s by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960&apos;s and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

The use of radioactive gages in beneficiation plants is relatively new However, enough applications have been made so that it is now possible to positively state that these gages have definitely progressed from a laboratory device to a very rugged and reliable on stream process measuring instrument. Gamma Ray Gages of the type presently being used in the beneficiation industry consist of three basic components: (1) A source of radiation (2) A radiation detector (3) An electronic amplifier The source is usually a radioisotope such as cesium-137, or cobalt-60. This source, adequately protected and ruggedly mounted, is most commonly placed on one side of a pipe or vessel. The radiation detector is then mounted on the opposite side, Since the absorption of gamma radiation as it passes through various materials is a function of the density of the material, the change in radiation measured by the detector is proportional to the change in specific gravity of the product in the pipe or vessel. One popular type of detector in use today is a cell which converts radioactive energy directly into electrical energy1. This electrical energy, when amplified, presents a usable output for metering and control devices. There are, of course, many other components which are part of a working gamma gage installation, such as zero compensators, lead shielding, mounting brackets, equivalent absorbers, etc.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines&apos; program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau&apos;s continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.&apos; The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people&apos;s awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns. The revolution in development of new technology and practices in the gold mining and metallurgy industry continues unabated despite the ups and downs in the gold price. Some of the new cutting edge technologies are listed in Table 1 overleaf. There is room to discuss just a few of these here, but many more are identified and described in RANDOL (1992). Cutting edge advancements in gold recuperation, can be sorted into three categories. The first category includes fundamental advances that offer major improvement with significant economic benefits. Second would include evolutionary developments that offer smaller, but nonetheless commercially valuable improvements. Finally there are those "advances" that are interesting but of trivial or question­able economic benefit to industry. It is essential to adopt a "systems approach" philosophy towards developing and applying new technology. Practical innovation often comes about as a result of having to solve a problem. Innovation for innovation sake is an ego trip. Environmental management has become an important part of the system and the environmental implications of new processes and practices in the mine and mill have to be carefully considered for potential benefits and/or liabilities.

The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district&apos;s major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho&apos;s Coeur d&apos;Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. "The construction of the three connecting tunnels between the east side and the west side of station C13, adjacent to the Vistula river, has a long and complex history, as they cross beneath one of Warsaw’s main road arteries (Wislostrada). After the attempt to excavate the first tunnel, the face of the tunnel collapsed on the night of August 13, 2012, and a volume of about 10,000 cubic meters of liquid mass (water, silty soil and sand) entered and flooded the west side of the station, which was filled with more than seven meters of material. Fortunately, the workers managed to escape, but machines and equipment were lost. This is the story of how the tunnels were completed, by adopting soil improvement, jet grouting, GRP bars, ground freezing and a careful choice of work steps. INTRODUCTION The Centrum Nauki Kopernik station on Line II of the Warsaw Underground is located alongside to the Vistula river (Figure 1). This station hereinafter is referred to as station C13.The station consist of three parts: the east and west part, and three connecting tunnels 40 meters in length with a large cross section (170 m2).. It includes the rails along the sides and the platform along the centre. The reason for the underground connection of two shafts with a tunnel is due to the presence of a road tunnel (Wislostrada, hereinafter called WS), which must be underpassed by the new metro line (Figure 2).The existing tunnel (Wislostrada) was built many years before, between diaphragm walls, and some foundation structures interfere with the underground tunnel. The challenge was to build the connectors without stopping the traffic of vehicles along the highway above. All works took place in very difficult geological and groundwater conditions due to the presence of Vistula alluvial deposits with poor mechanical characteristics. The soil profile consists of relatively loose sands on top, and silts overlying high plasticity Pliocene clays highly disturbed by the effects of the repeated over-sliding of glacial moraine deposits."

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project&apos;s economic potential, if you can&apos;t finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today&apos;s price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today&apos;s dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today&apos;s project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes. After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

Under a contract awarded by the U.S. DOE-PETC, the Pennsylvania Electric Company and New York. State Electric and Gas Corporation are conducting a test program to evaluate and optimize the performance of a two-inch air-sparged. hydrocyclone (ASH) for cleaning fine coal. The test program is being conducted at the Homer City EPRI Coal Quality Development Center, utilizing Upper Freeport coal classified to minus 0.15 mm as the process feed material. A matrix of experiments has been conducted to establish the influence of significant design and operating variables (including overflow and underflow orifices, inlet slurry pressure, airflow rate, and reagent dosage) on the production of deep cleaned coal. Performance of the ASH is being compared to conventional froth flotation, utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. This paper focuses on work completed to-date to optimize the performance of the air-sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal. INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) have been evaluating advanced fine coal cleaning processes for the production of compliance grade coal (1.2 pounds S02/million Btu). Laboratory bench-scale froth flotation results were compared with results of advanced flotation processes as performed by various organizations, utilizing the same coal feed. Among the processes evaluated, the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) - developed by Dr. Jan Miller at the University of Utah - was considered to offer the best potential for retrofitting into an existing coal preparation facility because of the increased capacity per unit volume. The ASH has been shown to process over 100 times the throughput of conventional froth flotation cells. In May of 1988, Penelec/NYSEG was awarded a contract from the Department of Energy&apos;s Pittsburgh Energy and Technology Center (DOE-PETC) to optimize the performance of a five cm (two inch) ASH for producing compliance grade coal from raw classified minus 0.150 mm (1.00 mesh) Upper Freeport coal, and to compare its performance with conventional froth flotation utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. The test work is being conducted at EPRI&apos;s Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania, utilizing a circuit processing 0.10 to 0.25 tons of coal per hour. Other members of the Penelec/NYSEG contract team include the University of Utah, Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., Davy Dravo, Kaiser Engineers, Ebasco Services, and Management and Technical Systems. ASH DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The ASH-2 System is a five cm ID (actually 4.76 cm) air-sparged hydrocyclone manufactured by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., under license from the University of Utah, for the purpose of research, evaluation and development. A schematic drawing of the air-sparged hydrocyclone is presented in Figure 1. Basically the air-sparged hydrocyclone consists of two concentric right-vertical tubes, a conventional cyclone header at the top, and a froth pedestal at the bottom. The inner tube is a porous tube through which air is sparged radially. The outer nonporous tube simply serves as an air jacket to provide for even distribution of air through the porous inner tube. The slurry is fed tangentially through the conventional cyclone header to develop a swirl flow in the radial direction. Air is sparged through the jacketed, inner porous tube wall and is sheared into small bubbles by the swirl flow. Hydrophobic particles in the slurry collide with these bubbles and, after attachment, are transported radially into a froth phase which forms on the cyclone axis. The froth phase is stabilized and constrained by the froth pedestal, thus moving towards the vortex finder of the cyclone header and discharged as an overflow product. Hydrophilic particles generally remain centrifuged in the slurry phase and are discharged as an underflow product through the annulus created by the froth pedestal.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

Assembling consistent data for a 40-year time series is a challenge because of the many changes that have occurred in this period. In many cases, because of process improvements and consumer requirements, grades of materials change in a 40-year span. This can lead to a wide fluctuation in price data simply because of increased costs for premium grades. Sources for obtaining price data can also change during a 40-year period. Changing the data source also introduces anomalies in a time series. In some cases, published price data are not representative of the real value of the material and provide little basis for further analysis. For some industrial mineral commodities, there are only a few producers, and value and production data are considered proprietary. In the data presented in this chapter, every attempt was made to ensure that the data were as consistent and representative of the industry as possible. However, the factors mentioned above may have introduced inconsistencies in some of the data series. Many different factors influence trends for industrial minerals because of the diversity of end uses for these commodities. Trends in production and prices for most of the industrial minerals can be related to one or more of the following: changing demand or technologies in end-use industries, development of new end uses, the effect of environmental regulations, production and processing technology changes, energy costs, foreign competition and substitution by other materials, and production as a byproduct of other minerals. World economic conditions, such as recessions and inflation rates, also play a part in some production and price trends. Data for 40 years of production for industrial minerals in the United States are presented in [Table 1] in 10-year increments. Unit values for the industrial minerals, in actual and constant 1990 dollars, are shown in [Tables 2 and 3].

Prior to initiating construction of a new mineral development project, sponsoring organizations must be convinced that the operation will be viable. Proof is typically provided by the feasibility study. Considerable man hours will be spent in assessing and evaluating data on the deposit, its environment, and the means of development. Impact studies must be made for various scales of operation, inclusion of by-products, new methods of treatment, deferent levels of integration, and infrastructure configuration. Examples of current materials handling cost estimates are provided from the ongoing investigation in which Amoco is a participant at Ok Tedi in Papua New Guinea and Gag Island in Indonesia.
