Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

Wollastonite is a little known industrial mineral of the silicate group. The largest and purest known deposit in the free world is being mined and beneficiated in Millsboro, New York by NYCO, A Division of Processed Minerals Incorporated. The associated garnet and diopside are separated from the wollastonite using dry high intensity magnetic separators. Beneficiated wollastonite is used extensively as an additive and filler in the ceramic, paint, refractory, and wallboard industries. Wollastonite acts as a functional filler due to its unique chemistry and physical acicularity.

Introduction Hydrogen peroxide is known to the mining industry as a powerful oxidant. able to attack and to destroy cyanide, the most important leaching reagent (Knorre and Griffiths, 1984; Griffiths, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). [ ] The most recent development, however, is the use of H2O2 as an oxidant in the cyanidation of precious metals. This application may appear to be a contradiction to the above mentioned detoxification process. This can, indeed, be the case if certain conditions are not considered carefully. Degussa has developed a new process to enable the application of H2O, in this field without having any detrimental effect on the cyanide. The incentive to seek an oxygen supplier like H2O2 instead of air was the fact that one of the most important conditions for the fast dissolution of gold is the presence of physically dissolved oxygen in the pulp (Kydryk and Kellog, 1954; Warstell, 1987). [ ] Complete gold recovery within a reasonable leaching time may only be achieved if the pulp is saturated with dissolved oxygen. Gold losses in leach operations mainly occur due to the following reasons: In some cases, the saturation of oxygen in the pulp cannot be achieved by aeration due to the difficulty to transfer oxygen from the gaseous into the liquid phase. This happens, for example, in pulps with a high viscosity. In such cases, even violent aeration only results in a low concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp. In any case, the starting phase of leaching requires the highest amount of oxygen. Therefore, it is especially important to raise the dissolved oxygen level to saturation in the starting phase. Peroxide assisted leach process (PAL) The intention of the process is to introduce oxygen in a liquid form. As a result of intensive research work, it could be shown that hydrogen peroxide can be used as a source of oxygen in the leaching of gold ores. To avoid side reactions, the following conditions must be applied: Hydrogen peroxide must be diluted before it is added to the pulp. The dosage of H2O, must be properly regulated based on the oxygen level of the pulp. An important part of the continuous O, control is a special oxygen electrode, which resists the extremely abrasive action of the pulp.

INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.

Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made' from mixtures' of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

United States Steel's Cumberland Coal Operations is located in Greene County in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The mine and related facilities have been in operation since September of 1977. Production from this mine, U. S. Steel's first commercial coal mining venture, will eventually reach a level of 2.72 million mt of clean coal per year and is totally committed to electric power generation. Cumberland is a slope mine in the Pittsburgh seam and is mined by continuous mining machines and longwall. The coal from the mine is trans- ported by belt to the surface, taken through a rotary breaker for initial preparation, and stored in raw coal silos. It is then processed through the preparation plant and taken to a clean coal silo where it is held for train loading. Cumberland Mine operates its am 28.16 km railroad to transport the coal to the Monongahela River. The unit train consists of thirty-one 90 mt cars. The coal, once loaded on barges, is then shipped to the customer. Cumberland Mine is one of the most modern coal preparation and unit train loading systems in the nation. The preparation plant is de- signed to receive coal from the silos at a rate of 720 at per hour. The +6.35 mm material is screened out and cleaned in a Daniels heavy media vessel with two 3.35 m weirs. Minus 6.35 mm material is fed to sixteen #88 Deister concentrating tables. The cleaned coal from this circuit is dewatered, and all effluents from the mechanical dewatering report to the classifying Cyclone sump for classification through ten 35.6 cm cyclones. The cyclones overflow material (-150 mesh) is processed through two banks of three 8.5 m3 Denver D.R. flotation machines. The cyclone underflow pro- duct (28-1 0 mesh) is processed in two banks of 5 six 2.83 m Denver Sub A machines. The clean flotation product is then dewatered in Bird screen bowl centrifuges, blended with the other clean coal size fractions, and the total plant product further dewatered in a thermal dryer.

Salar basins in the Andean Highlands of Northern Chile contain ground-water resources which could be used to satisfy requirements for the mineral industry in the region. Salars occur in arid zones; average precipitation is about 200 millimeters per year at altitudes of about 4,000 meters, and average annual evaporation is two meters or more. The salar basins are hydrogeologic sinks where water flows from recharge areas at the margins of the basins to discharge areas at the salt encrusted salar at the lowest point of the basin floor. Groundwater circulation occurs principally in the alluvial and fractured bedrock aquifers. Results of pumping tests for exploration and production water wells indicate a range in maximum sustained pumping yield of 62 to 126 liters per second, and where abundantly fractured, ignimbrite comprises the most prolific aquifer. Chemical quality of groundwater is good. Long-term pumping from properly located production wells in the salar basins would result in lowering of groundwater levels and salvage of water in areas where groundwater is lost via evaporation.

Zeta potential changes were determined as a function of pH, metal ion, and surfactant concentrations. Prom the analysis of data, flotation experiments were carried out to correlate float-ability with the differences in zeta potential. Cassiterite in water bears a negative zeta potential, The zeta potential of cassiterite is sensitive to pH changes; the electric double layer arises from the preferential adsorption of H+ and OH- ions and subsequent ionization of the hydroxylated surface. It is suspected that hydronium-ion concentration may cause reversal in the sign of the zeta potential. The ZPC was found to occur at pH 3.4. Metallic ions and the hydrated ions thereof affect the zeta potential of cassiterite in differing degrees of intensity. Without prior activation, sulfonated surfactants do not change the zeta potential of cassiterite. Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate is especially active on lead-activated cassiterite and ferric-activated cassiteriten Microcalorimetric fiests confimed the activity of ions on cassiterite and showed the hydrated character of cassiterite smfaces. Close correlation between zeta potential and microflotation results was achieved.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

From the beginning, man has concerned himself with the task of controlling the elements and forces about him so as to provide a better and easier life. In the accomplishment of this task, he is required to utilize in the best way possible the resources which are available to him. In many cases, the available resources must bee refined before they are in a useable form. Many products in the mining industry fall into this category, as some form of refinement is generally needed to produce a saleable product. Over the years man developed more efficient ways of extracting the resources from earth through the use of electrical and mechanical devices. A reduction in manual labor, which is a by-product of increased efficiency through machines, has also been enjoyed. The combination of man's senses and new devices has also enabled man to reach a high level of control in the refinement process. Control of a process through machinery and man's senses has been termed an "art." Until recently man's senses (sight, feel) were the only method available for making measurements simply because suitable measurement devices (instruments) were not available. Even today some items cannot be measured and man's senses must be used. However, the development in our instrument laboratories tends to indicate that time will eliminate this. In recent years, control of many processes has been reduced to a science and part or all of the art eliminated. This does not imply that process art should be degraded; however, when a process is reduced to a science, uniformity of the product from day to day is attained. Decreased processing time and more efficient use of additives and raw materials are other benefits that result from control of a process when it is reduced to a science.

The conventional magnetic separators used in the mineral industry are equipped with traditional magnetic circuits or with permanent magnets (rare earth). However, when processing minerals with low magnetic susceptibilities or minerals of very small particle size, these separators are inefficient. In addition, a conventional magnetic circuit consumes considerable amounts of electricity to generate a relatively low magnetic field (~2 Tesla). The equipment is also heavy and bulky. Only a separator having a superconducting sole-noid can contribute in solving most of the problems, and only such a separator can produce high magnetic fields with low energy consumption. New developments and the experience acquired in using these superconducting magnets have resulted in new uses for magnetic separation, especially in the environmental area. This paper presents and describes a separation system that uses superconducting magnets that are completely automated and able to treat raw materials (concentration or purification) or liquid industrial effluents containing heavy metals in solution. Several industrial sectors, including the surface treatment, petroleum and chemical industries, are generating effluents containing heavy metal ions. The main metal ions found in such effluents include zinc, copper and vanadium. The purification of such effluents by magnetic separation is performed by adding a certain proportion of iron salts. The treated effluent passes through a superconducting separator where the flocs are retained in a matrix of steel wires. The efficiency of supraconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) by this method exceeds 95%. Mineral separation and industrial-waste purification results are presented.

On the Corramandel Peninsula of New Zealand, the Waihi Gold Mine has undergone a major redevelopment. The upgrade included the construction of two very large overland belt conveyors, both rated for a capacity of 6000tph. The first of these conveyors (CVR2) traverses a total of 1600m over undulating terrain, including a significant section running through tunnels. A large hill is climbed, just after the mid-section of the conveyor run, before dropping back down prior the discharge point. The second of these conveyors (CVR8) traverses 1100m along an alignment with a horizontal curve, a number of vertical curves and a significant lift before the discharge point. The CVR8 conveyor also included a shuttling head pulley arrangement. The mine they service is inside the town of Waihi. The conveyor alignment runs through the town and out to the metallurgical process site on the outskirts of the municipal area. This paper documents the engineering process that took place in the design of these conveyors. The Martha Hill mine in Waihi, New Zealand is unique. The mine is placed in the township. Consequently there are quite stringent environmental limitations on the mine's operation. In [Figure 1] the proximity of the mine to the town is shown. In the top-centre of the photograph the alignment of the existing smaller overland conveyor can be seen leading from the mine to a tunnel through the hill in the background.

More than ever before, the Consulting Engineer is faced with requirements and restrictions which tax even the most original thinkers -- and the result is good. This paper describes the development of a modified Goodman Jack method for determining the mechanical properties of rock masses in situ. The modified method consists of the basic borehole loading device and a friction-strain-gauge measuring module. The friction gauges, located in the central portion of the jack, are impressed on opposite quadrants of the borehole walls and the remaining quadrants are loaded by the borehole jack with a uniaxial self-equilibrating pair of forces. The tangential strains generated at the borehole walls are thus measured concurrently with the loading. For ideal elastic materials, the tangential stresses at any point on the borehole walls due to jack loading can be obtained from closed-form analytical solutions utilizing the complex variable method. Complete stress-strain curves for the rock material can then be directly obtained from the tangential strain measurements and the calculated tangential stresses at those points. The continuous data are considerably more significant and reliable than averaged or point data obtainable by other current in situ measuring techniques. Moreover, the advantages inherent to the original Goodman Jack method are also obtainable in the modified method. The suitability of the new method was demonstrated by carrying out a number of laboratory measurements in large specimens of reinforced concrete, aluminum and granite blocks. The results of actual field measurements carried out in sandstone and granite quarries were found comparable with those obtained in the laboratory.

The increasing cost of developing new mines and the need to mine more marginal deposits have led mining companies to use more sophisticated estimation methods such as kriging. But until recently, coal mining companies have shown little or no interest in these techniques. However, the stringent quality controls which are now placed on coal have led to a surge in interest in improved estimation methods. This can be seen from the -, number of research projects by private companies and governmental agencies on the application of geostatistics to coal reserve estimation. At present, most of these programs are centered on the problem of estimating the tonnage and the average grade (i.e. ash percent, sulphur content, calorific value, etc.) of the coal in-situ. See, for example, Sabourin (1975), Woods (1976, 1979), Pauncz and Nixon (1979) and Armstrong (1980). These studies show that the established techniques of linear geostatistics can be applied successfully to coal deposits. The study by Woods is particularly interesting because he had access to the actual production figures as well as the initial sample data from the no 2 seam in the Greenside Colliery owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. He showed that the estimates obtained by kriging were consistently closer to the actual production figures than those given by three other estimation methods. This confirms the superiority of kriging as a method of estimating block values for coal. Another advantage of geostatistics is that it can be used to determine the optimal spacing between drill holes. An example of this is given by Armstrong for the coking coal deposit in the Bowen Basin, Australia.

The need for dimensionally stable filled polymer composites has spurred the quest for materials that possess a negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Finding minerals and materials with a negative CTE large enough to counteract the substantial CTE found in polymers proves challenging. Much research has been per-formed over the last decade to uncover various materials that possess this unusual behavior. A list of materials that have demonstrated negative properties are discussed, as well as the experimental use of one such material (ZrW2O8), in a polymer matrix composite. John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

[On Pier D in the Port of Long Beach, California, the Port of Long Beach has built a new bulk cement distribution terminal. The facility is operated by Pacific Coast Cement Corporation, who designed the complex and leased it from the Port of Long Beach on a 40-year lease. At one bulk cement is unloaded from vessels carrying from 12,000 to 30,000 t. The unloading is performed with pig speed mechanical unloading equipment and delivered into a concrete silo complex with, a capacity of 50,000 t. From the silos, bulls cement is loaded into trucks for delivery. The facility was completed in September 1981.]
