Construction of Shaft 17B-1, a part of The New York City water supply system, required an excavation of approximately 38 m (123 ft) through water-bearing overburden soil and more than 152 m (500 ft) of gneiss bedrock to make a connection to Water Tunnel No. 3. Ground freezing was the specified method to provide temporary earth support and ground water control for the overburden material. The ground freezing process relied on a supplemental geotechnical investigation and comprehensive laboratory testing of the frozen soil to evaluate the potential long-term creep behavior of the soil and the elimination of a temporary lining system. This paper describes that process as well as the drilling and installation methods of the ground freezing system. Additionally, the methodical system of excavation and insulation is discussed that permitted a safe and timely excavation followed by the installation of the permanent concrete liner.

California’s San Diego County Water Authority provides a safe and reliable water supply to more than 3.3 million residents through twenty-four member agencies. The 2nd Aqueduct pipelines, a critical infrastructure consisting of three large-diameter pipelines, are susceptible to natural threats including streambed erosion, channel migration, and seismic hazards within the 3,840-foot-long Moosa Canyon segment of the alignment. A state-of-good repair, hazard mitigation, and resiliency project is progressing to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For each pipeline, a segment will be replaced by tunneling. A high-level project development approach is presented, focusing on alternative selection, environmental and geotechnical considerations, and operations and maintenance constraints.

Geometric programming is a mathematical optimization technique, first formulated by Zener [1], for dealing with certain types of functions which typically arise in engineering design problems. The theory provides algorithms for finding the optimal solution, existence theorems by which one can show that a particular design is possible or not; and characterization theorems that especially make possible to obtain the relationships among the optimal design parameters at optimum. It has been demonstrated [2] that this technique can be applied to several design problems in chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering. Design problems in mining, metallurgical and mineral engineering have many aspects similar to that of other engineering problems. Thus it is only natural to consider geometric programming as a potential tool for solving certain optimization problems in mineral industries.

Coal, which was discovered in Utah in 1849, covers about 18% of the total area. Production in 1981 vas more than 14 million tons. However, some Utah coal mines are quite gassy. If longwall face technology is applied, then a release of a high volume of methane may be expected during the mining process. Investigations on methane content have been made by use of an isothermic bubble desorbometer. The desorbable methane content of 5 m3 to 16 m3 of methane per ton of coal mined has been determined.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. Wollastonite, named after W.H. Wollaston, an English chemist and mineralogist, is a calcium metasilicate having the chemical formula CaSiO2. Although it is a unique mineral, wollastonite has a short history of industrial use. Wollastonite is the only naturally occurring, nonmetallic, white acicular mineral. Its acicularity is the main reason for its ascendancy in the late 1970s and 1980s as a reinforcing filler and as a replacement for short-fiber asbestos and short-fiber milled fiberglass. Wollastonite is used in applications ranging from bowling balls to automobile fenders, from ceramic tile to automobile brakes, and from thermal insulation board to protective industrial coatings. The United States is the largest producer of wollastonite, with China, India, and Finland as the other three major sources. The United States, Europe, and the Far East are where most of the production is consumed. Geology Mineralogy and Physical and Chemical Properties Wollastonite, a member of the pyroxenoid mineral group, has the theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. Iron, manganese, magnesium, or strontium may substitute for some of the calcium. Commonly associated minerals include garnet, diopside, calcite, quartz, epidote, apatite, and sphene. Some of the physical properties of wollastonite are listed in [Table 1]. Wollastonite is largely chemically inert; however, it can be decomposed in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Some wollastonite will fluoresce under shortwave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both, with colors ranging from pink-orange to yellow-orange and, more rarely, bluish green. In addition, wollastonite may show phos¬phorescence. Because of its unique cleavage properties wollastonite breaks down during crushing and grinding into lath-like or needle-shaped particles of varying acicularity. This particle morphology imparts high strength and is therefore of considerable importance in many of the markets for wollastonite. The acicularity of particles is defined by their length:width, or length:diameter, ratio (i.e., aspect ratio). Individual particles, even the smallest ones, commonly ex¬hibit an aspect ratio of 7:1 or 8:1 and have an average diameter of 3.5 gm. Low aspect ratio products (powder wollastonite, or milled grades) with 3:1 to 5:1 aspect ratios are used as general fillers, in ceramics, and in metallurgical fluxing. High aspect ratio products with ratios of 15:1 to 20:1 are used as functional fillers for rein¬forcing thermoplastic and thermoset polymer compounds and as a replacement for asbestos. The dry brightness and whiteness of wollastonite are also important in determining its suitability for certain filler and ceramic applications. When pure, the mineral is brilliantly white, but impurities may color it cream or gray. Brightness is determined by measuring the reflectance of finely ground powder against a stan¬dard that is assigned a brightness of 100. Magnesium oxide and barium sulfate are the two standards used. G.E. brightness, a term used in North America, refers to brightness measured with a Gen¬eral Electric reflectometer. Commercial wollastonite products usu¬ally have a G.E. brightness ranging from 85 to 95. The Hunter method is also used to measure the brightness of wollastonite. Loss on ignition (LOI), another important property in determining applications for wollastonite, is the amount of volatile matter driven off when the mineral is heated to 1 000°C. Com¬mercial wollastonite products have an ignition loss ranging from 0.5 to 2.0%. Wollastonite's naturally high pH of 9.9 (10% water slurry) is of major importance to its use in the coatings industry. Coatings formulators use milled grades as a pH stabilizer in interior and exterior PVA (polyvinyl acetate) and acrylic latex paints. There are two polymorphs of calcium silicate: wollastonite, a low-temperature form, and pseudowollastonite, a high-temperature form. Conversion of wollastonite to pseudowollastonite occurs at about 1 120°C and results in an increase in the coefficient of expansion and a color change. Pure white wollastonite may change to a cream tint or to various shades of red or brown. This color change is thought to be due to the presence of iron and/or strontium.

The mining industry faces many difficult challenges, for example, lower ore grades, smaller and deeper deposits, and longer transportation distances. In the past, there have been remarkable innovations in both equipment and the types of mining methods for which it is used, which have resulted in economies of scale. This has led to an increased use of bulk mining methods, like sublevel and block caving, which has increased productivity and reduced costs. Haulage alone plays a major role. Current haulage techniques are a significant cost driver, which account for between 15 and 30% of the overall capital investment (capex) in a mine and are an increasingly part of the operating costs (opex). The paper introduces a simulation tool of main haulage system in underground mining. Therefore, performances and the costs of the three most common underground main haulage systems, rail, truck, and conveyor, are calculated using a developed modeling tool. The tool was applied and validated in a case study carried out with the LKAB Kiruna Mine in northern Sweden.

The traditional approach to safety clearance monitoring and proper PPE usage in underground mines is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to negligence. However, automated real-time monitoring can be implemented using computer vision-based approaches. This study aims to develop a system that provides timely information based on the automatic detection of proper PPE use and safety clearance in underground mines. Deep learning and a decentralized computing structure between the cloud and sensing devices (fog technology) are used. We hypothesize that a camera-based system can provide near real-time assessment of proper PPE use and verified clearance to access restricted areas in underground mines.

In July 1968, P.T. Inco Indonesia was granted a Contract of Work to explore and develop the nickel laterite resources on the southeastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.

Methane gas explosions are a major risk in underground coal mining operations. The severity of such explosions can range from local area damage to massive loss of miners’ lives along with significant damage to mine infrastructure and ventilation controls that may lead to mine closure and loss of the entire operation. This study demonstrates the viability of integrating a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model into a longwall mine ventilation model to simulate methane gas explosions in the longwall face area. The resulting 3D methane gas explosion simulation can provide better understanding of the fundamental physics and the potential impact of an explosion in an underground longwall coal mine.

The concept of mobile crushers is not new. Since their introduction about twenty-five years ago, mobile crushers have continued to gain widespread attention. Mobile crushers reduce minerals in the open pit mine to sizes which can be transported by belt conveyors thereby reducing or eliminating the need for truck haulage. Truck haulage is costly, often representing as much as 50% of the total mining cost. More than 80% of the cost of truck haulage is for fuel and lubricants, tire replacements, and operators' wages, and it can be anticipated that the cost of these items will continue to increase at a steady pace. Compared to truck haulage, transportation by belt conveyor is more energy-efficient, less labor-intensive, and less subject to inflation. Therefore, mobile crushers, used in conjunction with belt conveyor systems, offer one of the most effective available methods of reducing energy consumption and mining costs,

Adequate ventilation is a main concern if Lockerby Mine near Sudbury is to be expended. This study investigate a two-fold problem: (1) the new pressure and volume requirements of the main fans due to the theoretical. deepening of the mine, and (2) the effect of the natural ventilation pressure on the main fans. Field data was analyzed with the aid of a newly developed network simulation program, VNETPC Version 3. 0. The density change throughout the mine is accounted for by performing all computations at reference density. Results of the investigation indicate that the existing fan system must be supported by three to five additional underground fans as well, the density effect is significant. Column flotation technique is applied for the depression of the magnetic material by the application of an axial magnetic field from chalcopyrite ore. It is observed that an increase in the intensity of magnetic field from 0 to 316.8 oersteds decreased the magnetic content in the froth from 25 to 2 %. . This might be due to retention of magnetic material in the magnetizable zone and the diffusion of nonmagnetics through it. The effect of air velocity increased the magnetic content in the froth and total froth content also. At low gas velocity the tiny bubbles are formed whereas at high gas velocity these coalesce into big bubbles and slugs formed breaks the magnetizable zone. This study opens a new field called 'Magneto-flotation'.

Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 19601s, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines available today have unit volumes in the range of 38 to 42 m3 (1,350 to 1,500 cft). In fact, the motivating forces of increasing capital and energy costs and decreasing ore grades, which created the need for large flotation cells, not only still exist, but are becoming more critical. This paper reports the development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the development of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

"INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation's (KACC) entrance into the alumina market began in 1946 with the purchase of a small plant in Baton Rouge. Louisiana. Since that time KACC has been involved with the design, construct; on, and operation of many alumina plants around the world. One of these plants is located in Gramercy, Louisiana. The Gramercy Works is a multiplant installation consisting of an alumina plant, a caustic-chlorine plant, a petroleum coke calciner and a fluorochemicals plant. Each of these plants require their own specific environmental control programs to abate pollution. Kaiser has made significant progress through the years on their own initiative in pollution control. But many new challenges have been and continue to be created with the enactment of environmental laws. The 1970 Clean Air Act Amendments, the resurrection of the old "Refuse Act" in 1970 and finally the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments prompted the formulation of our current philosophy towards the abatement of pollution. Since the formulation of these complicated pieces of legislation, others equally complicated, have come to being. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act as amended by the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act of October, 1972, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, the Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act of 1976 and the Safe Drinking Water Act sighed in December of 1974 have all contributed to the challenge for an alumina plant to meet regulatory constraints. However, this paper will only discuss the alumina plant?s environmental programs designed to meet compliance with air and water pollution legislation. At the Gramercy Alumina Plant, over $25 million has been spent for pollution control since 1969. The Gramercy Plant is a prime example of KACC's commitment to meeting the environmental challenge.

What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? This is one of the most frequently asked questions today. We, in the industry, ask it of each other when we meet; however, the technical answers may vary from "I don't know" to 'quite good" from people within the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in our planning for future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, water application, etc. Each has a bearing on the rate of recovery. OPERATIONAL DATA Our method of water distribution is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The in¬jection holes are drilled vertically, on 251 centers, from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40' deep and cased with 4" PVC perforated pipe.. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four V diameter holes at 901 spacing on the pipe circumference. We formerly alternated shallow holes (20'-40') with deep holes (80'-l80') in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile, We prefer to have the deep holes end 20'-30' above the original ground level. This generally allows us to penetrate the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. We had to discontinue the deep holes_ in order to cover more dump area in a shorter period of time to meet increased production requirements.

Even in an otherwise care-fully done sampling procedure, reducing subsample weight, or splitting, when the grain size of material is too large commonly generates significant error. Such error can be estimated from the standard deviation of differences between values of PAIRED ASSAYS. Samples from split-ting steps immediately before comminution, and showing a restricted range of grade, generate paired assays. Splitting steps characterized by relative standard deviations exceeding 16% generate nonrepresentative data. Such steps should be redesigned to optimize reliability of assay-dependent studies. A sampling scheme can be graphically characterized, and then redesigned as appropriate, using a SAMPLING NOMOGRAPH. Use of the nomograph avoids continued replication of assays. Generally at a splitting step, excessive error can be reduced by comminuting more material. Unnecessary effort can be mitigated by comminuting less finely and/or by splitting to a smaller weight.

Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.
