The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.

"The earliest known use of cobalt was to make blue glass in Mesopotamia before 2000 B.C.E. Since then, innovations across many diverse industrial sectors transformed cobalt into an essential commodity for contemporary society. The physical and chemical properties of the element cobalt and its alloys and compounds make them indispensable for a variety of applications, including aircraft engines, hybrid electric vehicles, machine tools, missile guidance systems, petroleum refining and smartphones. As a major industrialized nation, the United States is a leading consumer of cobalt and cobalt-containing products. However, with few exceptions, U.S. cobaltcontaining ore deposits are of low cobalt grade. Historically, U.S. cobalt mine and refinery output have not met domestic cobalt demand. As a result, U.S. cobalt chemical and alloy producers need to procure most of their cobalt from the international market, which can become susceptible to supply risk.The 1978 Cobalt Crisis illustrates supply risk. At that time, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (then known as Zaire) was the world’s leading producer of mined and refined cobalt. An insurgent invasion of the country’s copper-cobalt mining region during a period of high cobalt demand and low producer inventories caused a temporary supply shortage in the international market. The monthly average cobalt spot price increased from $18/ kg ($8/lb) before the crisis to $99/kg ($45/lb) seven months later. The high price and concern about potential disruptions in supply prompted manufacturers to reduce or substitute for cobalt where possible, and encouraged increased recovery of cobalt from scrap. The DRC has regained its position as the leading producer of mined cobalt globally and continues to be characterized by high governance risks (U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, 2015; World Bank, undated). This article will present current and historical world cobalt production trends, which can help inform discussion about the variety of international supply chain risks consequential to its trade."

"The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer studies as well as for studies conducted in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources has been previously demonstrated in underground mines, but this new work details the testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds compatible with passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed: (1) PMCH, (2) perfluoroethylcyclohexane (PECH) and perfluoromethylcyclopentane (PMCP). The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180-day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in characterizing ventilation circuits, flow through gob and leakage. IntroductionThe use of tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various past research projects conducted using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Tracer gas techniques have been applied to assess flow rates, dilutions rates and auxiliary ventilation system efficiencies with quick, reliable and accurate results (Suglo and Frimpong, 2002). Perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) compounds are a new introduction to ventilation and air modeling applications in terms of ventilation flow characterization (Watson et al., 2007).PFTs are liquids that are characterized by low background presence in air, low reactivity, high detectability and low toxicity. A design was proposed, called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), to convert PFTs from a liquid to a gas and then release the gaseous tracer in a controlled manner. The initial concept was originally introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory and refined later to become the PPRV. The PPRV functions by allowing the volatile PFT liquid to become a vapor in a controlled manner. The vapor diffuses through a permeable silicone stopper at a predictable rate proportional to temperature (Zhang and Cloud, 2006)."

"Airborne respirable coal dust capture by water sprays or wet scrubbers has been studied and developed over many decades as an engineering control to reduce dust exposure in coal mines and combat coal worker pneumoconiosis. Empirical relationships and deterministic models for particular dust capture experiments have previously been devised to show the key parameters involved in airborne coal dust capture. Many of the results from these models show that the significant parameters related to airborne dust capture are water spray pressure, water quantity, water droplet size, relative water droplet-to-dust particle velocity, and total operating air pressure of the scrubber. However, many airborne dust capture efficiency relationships and models developed for particular experiments cannot be readily applied to forecast the dust collection efficiency of different spray and scrubber design configurations, which rely on several key dimensional engineering measures. This study examines engineering measures from previous water spray and wet scrubber experiments conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to develop empirical models for wet collection of airborne dusts. A dimensionless empirical model developed for predicting airborne dust capture efficiency of water sprays and wet scrubbers is presented. IntroductionWater sprays have been one of the earliest mainstay engineering controls used to suppress respirable dust in underground coal mines. Some of the earliest reports of water spray usage on continuous mining machines indicated respirable coal mine dust reductions of 20 to 60 percent (Kobrick, 1970). Not long after the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and others conducted extensive research into water spray and wet scrubber systems to control respirable dust in coal mines. The primary aspects of water spray dust control included prewetting for dust prevention, localized ventilation redirection and airborne dust capture, which are summarized in handbooks or best-practices guides (Kost, Yingling and Mondics, 1981; Kissell, 2003; Colinet et al., 2010). Initially, underground studies were conducted to identify the primary sources of dust during the mining processes and effective dust controls (Courtney, Jayaraman and Behum, 1978; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983). Laboratory research systematically studied ventilation and airborne dust capture effects of water sprays and scrubbers to improve their application in underground coal mines (Tomb, Emmerling and Kellner, 1972; Divers and Janosik, 1978, 1980; Grigal et al., 1982; Ruggieri et al., 1983; Jayaraman, Jankowski and Kissell, 1985; Volkwein, Ruggieri et al., 1985; Jayaraman, Schroeder and Kissell, 1986; Divers, Jankowski and Kelly, 1987; Jones and James, 1987)."

INTRODUCTION The tailing dam is part of the SOHIO L-Bar Uranium Mine and Mill located about 70.8 kilometers (44 miles) west of Albuquerque in northwestern New Mexico. The dam location is shown on Figure 1. The tailing dam is one of the last upstream method dams permitted in the industry. Design and construction aspects of the project, as well as operation and maintenance considerations, are reviewed herein. Since initial construction, SOHIO Western Mining Company and Woodward-Clyde Consultants have developed several modifications and improvements in the dam's operating and monitoring procedures. This work has been done in coordination with the New Mexico State Engineer's Office and in accordance with recommendations in a report done for the Corps of Engineer's Phase I Dam Inspection Report. Modifications and improvements described should be of particular interest to owners and operators of other tailing dams utilizing the upstream method of deposition. The tailing facility was designed for a 10-year life to provide an ultimate storage capacity of 6 1/2 billion kilograms (7 1/2 million short tons) in an area of about 180 acres. A plan view of the tailing dam is shown on Figure 2. The tailing consists of approximately 75% sand size material and 25% fines (material passing the No. 200 sieve). The tailing dam includes a small earth starter dam with raises of the dam accomplished using tailing deposited by upstream method techniques. The starter dam is a homogeneous embankment about 610 meters (2000 feet) long, a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet) and 2 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) upstream and downstream slopes. The starter dam contains an internal drainage system which includes a near vertical chimney drain connected to horizontal finger drains. A typical section through the maximum height of the starter dam is shown on Figure 3. A small confining dam, approximately 1.6 meters (5 feet) high, is constructed beyond the limits

The Metropolitan St. Louis Water District’s Project Clear is a 28-year program targeting wastewater capacity throughout St. Louis, MO. The extensive program includes the Jefferson Barracks Tunnel, running parallel to the Mississippi River at 2 m ID and 5,400 m long. A rebuilt Robbins Main Beam TBM began boring but hit challenging conditions about 2,400 m in, including water inflows. A larger 4.1 m Robbins Main Beam machine will complete the remaining 3,050 m in limestone, dolomite, and shale. The TBM will utilize a high-powered, high breakout torque cutterhead along with enhanced 360-degree probing & grouting capabilities to detect any karst formations.

Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and manufacturers of filtration and pressurization systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3-89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent with the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment, thus minimizing respirable dust exposure.

The competitiveness of power production from lignite depends on the ability of coal industry to meet CO2 emissions limits, as specified by the Kyoto protocol. According to the National Allocation plan issued by EC, power plants should reduce CO2 emissions to a certain level, other-wise they will be obliged to cover the difference buying CO2 certificates through the Emission Trading Scheme. These charges will increase the operating cost of current units, as well as the investment cost for new units. To predict the increase in the marginal cost of electric power produced from the current plants of Western Macedonia, an emissions factor (CO2 t/MWh) for various units has been computed. Based on the algorithm used, this factor depends on the calorific value of the lignite, the efficiency of the power plant and the oxidation factor of the unit. For lignite plants with efficiency ~37%, CO2 emissions factor ranged from 1.19 t/MWh to 1.32 t/MWh. The increase in the marginal cost of kWh, as compared to the values of CO2 certificates, is higher in units fed with low quality lignite and worsens if the efficiency of the unit is low too. Also the presence of calcareous minerals in lignite increases the CO2 emissions and consequently the cost of power generation.

The increased use of sensors to facilitate automation has led to an explosion of data. As data sets grow in size, their use becomes more complex. Therefore, there is an incentive for reducing the size of the datasets, as long as this does not compromise information gleaning. With this in mind, this project explored basic aggregation as a viable alternative to amassing large amounts of data. The goal of the project was to determine if one would arrive at different conclusions had they analyzed aggregated data instead of raw data. In a mine, operational data is typically used for tracking process statistics, correlation between factors, autocorrelation and multivariate models (for a factor of choice). Therefore, this project compared results from such analyses when it was conducted with aggregated data (AD) with the results of analyses conducted with raw data (RD). The data consisted of one-minute-apart readings from a semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill on the horsepower, feed rate (tons per hour), rotations per minute (rpm), noise, recycle (tons per hour), density (% solids) and bearing pressure (psig). This data was aggregated by averaging five and 10 continuous (one-minute) observations. Changes in statistical measures between the two approaches were typically within 5% of each other. Differences in correlation coefficients between RD and AD(s) were also within this range. Autocorrelations present within RD were preserved in AD, as long as the time lags were scaled for the amount of aggregation. Regression and neural network models were also developed for power consumption. The prediction performance of developed models was similar whether one used raw data or aggregated data. Overall, it appeared that aggregating the data based on 5- or 10-minute time spans would not have resulted in conclusions (from simple or complex analyses) being different from using raw data. In other words, whether one had used raw data or aggregated data, the conclusions would have been the same, suggesting that time domain aggregation, a common industry practice, is a good alternative to storing high-density data in this case.

"Testing of the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) designed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gone through many iterations, demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled laboratory conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co., an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, further developed the concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. In the present work, laboratory testing was conducted, showing dust control efficiencies ranging from 17.2 to 24.5 percent. Subsequent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis revealed limitations in the design, and a potential improvement was analyzed and recommended. As a result, a new CAC design is being developed, incorporating the results of the testing and CFD analysis.IntroductionExposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumo-coniosis (CWP), also known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is to eliminate exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica, or quartz. The occupational exposure limit on a Mining Research Establishment (MRE) basis for respirable coal mine dust had been 2 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities. Under recently enacted legislation, this standard was changed in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift (The Office of the Federal Register, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain its average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percentage of quartz present (The Office of the Federal Register, 30 CFR 70.101, 2015).The sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind — in the return air — of the continuous miner (Good-man and Organiscak, 2003). Recent studies have demonstrated that vacu-um dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most expo-sure to respirable coal mine dust for a roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner (Potts, Reed and Colinet, 2011; Colinet, Reed and Potts, 2013). Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is often limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift."

Prediction of acid rock drainage (ARD) for low-sulphide, low-neutralisation potential (LSLNP) mine wastes is methodologically different from that for normal sulphidic mining wastes. In this paper. LSLNP wastes are conveniently defined as those with S2 < 1% and ABA-NP2 < 20 kg CaCO3 eq/t. The distinctiveness of ARD prediction for LSLNP materials originates from their frequently low oxidation rates and is mainly attributable to two reasons. First, the utilisation efficiency of available carbonate neutralisation potential (CNP2) rapidly deteriorates when the sulphide oxidation rate per unit mass of waste drops below a certain level. Reducing the flushing rate of a waste has the same effect as increasing the oxidation rate. Second, silicate neutralisation becomes increasingly important as oxidation rates diminish, and can no longer be ignored in LSLNP materials as it often is for normal sulphidic mine wastes. In this paper, the effects of oxidation rate, pore gas CO2 partial pressure, and flushing rate on ARD prediction for LSLNP materials are theoretically demonstrated with the help of modelling using the computer program MINTEQA2. A new methodology for ARD prediction for LSLNP materials is presented in terms of a prediction procedure. Finally, a case study is given to validate some of theoretical aspects discussed and to illustrate the use of the newly proposed ARD prediction procedure.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. Video technology coupled with datalogging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. these techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties. the Helmet-Cam is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a datalogging dust monitor. these are worn by the miner in a backpack, safety belt or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data filesare downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called enhanced Video Analysis of Dust exposure (eVADe). by providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the eVADe software allows for the assessment and identificationof key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantlyimpact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. the Helmet-Cam technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a valuable assessment tool. mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed eVADe software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs. Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. Se identificó al sistema hidráulico y a los enlaces hidráulicos, mangueras y tuberías como el sistema y subsistema más importantes, respectivamente. Se identificó una función de distribución de tres parámetros gamma como el más apto para un modelado de probabilidades del tiempo transcurrido entre las fallas (Tabes por sus siglas en inglés). Esta distribución fue usada en un análisis de confiabilidad Monte Carlo para un sistema hidráulico. El promedio de movimiento integrado auto-regresivo (ARIMA por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del contexto de análisis de serie temporal de los TBFs, fue propuesto como una alternativa viable a la tradicional técnica de ajuste de distribución. The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another increasingly common evaluation system for proposed projects is the environmental, social and health impact assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its generally more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluating potential impacts, such as on public health, and other features such as an ecosystem services approach to assessing biophysical and community impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. In this paper, EIA standards for the province of Alberta, Canada are discussed and compared to ESHIA. It concludes with several recommendations for consideration.
