Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

The detection of hazardous geological anomalies through remote sensing techniques is the subject of current research efforts sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this review, hazardous geological anomalies are discussed with respect to the "view" presented along with potential operational concepts for each technique. The design and development of a borehole radar is described with emphasis on the potential range and resolution capability of the system under realistic underground conditions. Results of field tests at two coal mines and at a hard rock future subway location are presented.

During the last years many new concepts have been presented for magnetic separation of feebly magnetic minerals by using the new high-duty permanent magnetic material especially in Open Gradient Magnet Systems (OGMS). In this respect KHD Humboldt Wedag AG developed an improved version of a drum-type magnetic separator called PERMOS® with a special magnetic field configuration for the NdFeB permanent magnets, which gives a magnetic field strength of at least 0.7 Tesla and a wide working zone outside the drum. The magnet system within the PERMOS® unit is no longer made of relatively large magnet blocks of alternating radial magnetisation; the system is now made up of a multitude of small NdFeB bars with a specially oriented magnetisation. This PERMOS® Open Gradient Magnetic Separator can be used for dry magnetic separations in "top-feed" and 'free-fall" feed configuration as well as in the conventional wet "drum-type" feed mode. It allows high throughput rates of up to 40 metric tons of solids per hour and meter of drum length without any clogging problems, even when strongly magnetic com-pounds are present in the feed material. The important design features and the actual machine characteristics of the improved PERMOS® units for dry and wet magnetic separation are described and typical examples for their commercial application for industrial minerals and for martitic iron ores are presented.

Limestone and Dolomite quarries located near Salto-De-Pirapora, Arroia Grande Gaucho, Conde Francisco and Candioita probably represent the closest, major sources of high quality lime and cement grade carbonate rocks to the major population center of Sao Paulo Brazil. The nearest major city to most of the limestone - dolomite sources is Sorocaba and Palma. All of the mining properties visited during this study are located in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul at approximately -32 degrees south latitude and -52 degrees west longitude, southwest of the major port city of Porto Alegre.

INTRODUCTION This paper traces the application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at industrial and pilot scale in Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine installed the first of two smooth segmented HPGRs during 1990 in an open-circuit secondary-tertiary crushing application to increase throughput. In 2002 a third HPGR was added to improve liberation and so increase the recovery of smaller diamonds. The latest improvements in wear technology (tyre with tungsten carbide studs) were incorporated in the design of this machine. Extensive HPGR pilot-plant trials were undertaken during the 1990s at both the Kalgoorlie Consolidate Gold Mine and the Boddington Gold Mine. The purpose of these trials was to evaluate HPGR as a method to increase throughput, as an alternative to SAG milling, and also to ascertain if downstream benefits existed. One of the challenges for HPGR circuit designers is to translate what occurs at small laboratory and pilot scale into what is likely to happen in a full-scale circuit. Scale-up from pilot machine results is normally recommended by manufacturers. However, such tests need relatively large quantities of material, particularly if meaningful data on wear are to be obtained. Laboratory tests are preferable, as they need relatively small quantities of ore, but may be questioned in terms of how they relate to full-scale operation. Modelling and simulation have played a particularly important role in this respect in Australia. Models are available which have proven to be very accurate at being able to scale throughput and specific energy response from laboratory to industrial machines. More recently, work in Australia has also been done in developing a model which has the potential to scale laboratory wear data as well.

With the rapidly rising cost for electrical energy and the long range pre¬dictions for continued rising costs and even possible energy shortages, operation of rod, ball, autogenous and partial autogenous grinding circuits to efficiently utilize the power delivered to the mills will be demanded. This calls for a method to evaluate grinding circuit performance that is accurate, reliable and readily usable as an operating tool by supervisory, technical and operating personnel. Neither the Rittinger and Kick theories of comminution,(1) which preceded the Bond Theory by more than 50 years, had a mathematical means that could be used to predict and evaluate the performance of crushers and grinding mills used to comminute ores and rocks. This severly limited the practical use of these two theories, which were contradictory to each other. They have been superseded by the Bond Third Theory of Commnution.(1)

Bayer-process alumina hydrate becomes in turn the source of a host of special products in addition to the calcines that feed aluminum reduction cells. Though relatively smaller in tonnage, specialty aluminas serve important industrial markets in an exciting and growing variety. Production methods and applications are discussed for: (1) trihydrate as flame retardant in organic materials; (2) high-surface-area transition aluminas as desiccants and scavengers, catalysts and substrates; (3) calcines for industrial ceramics, refractories, and abrasives; and (4) tabular alumina for refractories, bed supports and other uses.

In the construction of "Hamacho" subway station (Tokyo Metropolitan Rapid Transit), in order to minimize ground surface settlement, the pipe-roof method was employed as an auxiliary measure when removing the portion between two parallel shield tunnels to form one large tunnel for the station. 14 steel pipes (dia.1,219.2mm, length 75m) were driven in horizontally so as to cover tunnels and support heavy and extremely soft covering soil and surface structures. Procedures of temporary supporting, excavation under compressed air, reinforcing, concreting, etc., and some comparisons with conventional methods are described.

Although the role of the collector has long been thought to play a predominant role in coal flotation, recent investigations by the authors show that the frother plays an equally important role. These investigations have included extensive testwork in several coal preparation plants and in the laboratory. The factors which were investigated include the absolute level of collector and frother addition, the ratio of frother to collector additions, the type of frother, and the particle size distribution of the feed. Results from this testwork reveal strong interactions between these factors as well as the necessity of considering these factors in order to optimize the reagent regime.

In order to simulate the operation of coal extraction machines, a portable workability instrument has been designed. Initially, the tests were performed with the instrument on modeling material, which were followed by in situ tests on coal in underground mines. The peak and mean cutting resistance and work done to cut a unit length of coal were determined for coal as well as modeling material. In addition, rebound strength and dynamic penetration tests were also performed in situ. On the basis of the cutting characteristics of coal, a "Workability Index" has been developed and its role in the judicious selection of coal cutting machines has been discussed. With reference to prior works and the strength characteristics of coal, it was found that the coal plow may not be suitable for the seams under investigation and the shearer seems to be the only choice. It has been observed that peak cutting resistance and the "Workability Index" in the case of coal as well as modeling material depend upon compressive strength. The peak cutting resistance exhibited certain dependence upon the Schmidt rebound hardness and dynamic penetration strength of coal in situ.

The study re-examines respirable coal mine dust samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It finds that SEM tends to overpredict the abundance of dust from rock strata and underpredict coal content, possibly due to coal-mineral microagglomerates (MAGs). The findings suggest that MAGs could be valuable in improving dust controls in mines.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine is first among all equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a ?JOY Designed for Noise Reduction? (JOY-DNR; Patent Pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 45% and 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when compared to a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

This paper will be concerned with those mineable coal measures at depths necessitating deep mine operations in the range of 200 feet to 800 feet in depth. The area is generally classified as the Southern Illinois Field but more specifically includes that part of the state south of a line extending from St. Louis, Missouri on the west to Vincennes, Indiana, on the east. This embraces an area which presently includes a total of 38 shipping mines and 5 local or truck mines. Of these shipping mines, 22 are deep (shaft or slope) mines and the remaining 16 are strips. The average annual production of the shipping mines is around 29 million tons. The presently classified mineable reserves of the area are estimated at around 70 billion tons.

Relationships among mine and injured miner characteristics and HSAC's degrees of injury are examined for 91,404 injuries in under- ground bituminous coal mines in the United States from 1975 through 1982. Injury severity varies by the mining system, geographical region, circumstances surrounding the injury, the injured miner's age, whether the miner was using powered equipment, the year which the injury occurred, and the location in the mine where the injury happened. Injury severity is not related to the injured miner's total mining experience, job experience, and experience in the mine in which the injury occurred.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

Dredging and Flooding was completed on the Falconbridge Limited "New Tailings Area" in the period from 1996 through 1998, as part of their site closure measures. Part of the decision making process and closure planning was water quality prediction, including oxidation and diffusion modelling. The purpose of this modeling was to define the potential water quality that would result during and after dredging. A significant body of research on the geochemistry and oxidation kinetics of this site had been compiled. The results of the modeling provide practical insight on the potential water quality that may be expected. Water quality in the pond has steadily improved since flooding was completed with the exception of short term peaks during spring runoff. Aquatic vegetation is appearing through natural recovery and transplanting of local species, and colonies of minnows are now observed in the ponds.

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. INTRODUCTION There are currently around fifteen companies in the United States and Europe manufacturing hard rock tunneling machines. In recent years upwards of 200 hard rock tunnels of lengths up to 12 miles and diameters to the order of 30 ft have and are being successfully driven by over 100 different machines. It has been predicted that within the next decade over 2,000 miles of tunnels will be driven for transportation purposes in the United States alone (OECD Advisory Conference on Tunneling, Washington, 1970) and it is expected that eventually most tunnels including mine drivages will be excavated by machines. All tunneling machines have certain common basic functions; thrust is applied to drive or hold the rock cutting tools into the face, and torque is applied to rotate the cutting tools over the face so that they can continuously break out rock. The speed of head rotation, together with the torque requirement, determines the cutter head power. (The power required to push the head forward is usually negligible.) There are many factors which determine how successfully a given tunneling machine will perform in a given rock but one of the most important is effective utilization of cutter head power. This paper is a review of the specifications and performance of hard rock tunneling machines, obtained from manufacturers&apos; catalogs, published literature, talks with manufacturers and visits to operating machines throughout the United States and Europe.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum will hold its Ninth Annual Induction Banquet Sept. 8, 1996, at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. Six mining greats, two of them living, will be enshrined at the event. They will join 126 other mining legends previously honored by the hall of fame. The keynote speaker will be William Perry Pendley, president and chief legal officer of Mountain States Legal Foundation in Denver, CO. Jeffrey Zelms, president and chief executive officer of The Doe Run Co., will be master of ceremonies. Richard Swayne, regional director USA for Boart Longyear Co. of Salt Lake City, UT, will introduce the speakers. Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources Corp. and chairman of the Mining Hall of Fame’s board of governors, will enshrine the inductees.
