Associated with cordilleran intrusives of intemediate to acidic composition, gold/silver ores are generally found in the intruded host rocks which are adjacent to these intrusives. Generally precious metal deposits lie further from the intrusives than allied base metal deposits. For vented intrusives, the associated volcanics may constitute the intruded rock and form the host for precious metal accumulation. Potential field methods, particularly magnetics, can help to define unseen boundaries of intrusive systems and thus can point to generalized prospecting targets. Other clues arise from the intrusive system type, its emplacement fracturing, the host rock type and local magnetic changes caused by mineralization processes.

Flocculation of fine coal is usually accomplished with the addition of commercially available organic flocculants. Recently it has been shown that biopolymers derived from microorganisms can be used to flocculate coal. The biopolymers flocculate coal efficiently and render the coal surface hydrophobic. The increase in hydrophobicity can be utilized either to separate the coal flocs from mineral matter. It can also be used for reducing the moisture content of fine coal. In this regard, flocculation and settling tests of fine coal with biopolymers and synthetic flocculants was undertaken and the results are discussed here. Also, a transport model was developed for the time-dependent settling tests for fine coal.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Pelletizing studies were conducted to find ways of improving the metallurgical properties of acid and fluxed pellets. In acid pellets, melting temperature was controlled by the formation of low melting temperature fayalite during reduction. Formation of a permeable metallic shell during reduction allows diffusion of reducing gas to the pellet core, decreasing fayalite formation. With fluxed pellets, slag chemistry had the main influence on metallurgical properties. Mineralogical, chemical and structural transformations that occur during reduction were studied at various intervals for a number of Mesabi Range pellet types. Six pellet types were selected for further investigation based on significant differences in softening/melting characteristics. Retention of porosity in the metallic shell was found to be the overriding factor in determining softening/melting behavior.

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limit of an open pit mine during its feasibility study has become an emphasized procedure in mining. It is a normal practice in open pit mine design to generate the most profitable final pit limit. The limitations of designing this optimal pit limit have been the requirement of significant computing efforts as well as the use of complicated operations research techniques. In an attempt to describe a computer method that has an easy conceptualization and is able to provide a precise and desirable solution, a new technique is developed. The ultimate pit limit problem is formulated as a large scale transportation problem. The formulation is based on the use of a three dimensional block model to represent an ore body and surrounding materials. The solution technique is developed through solving the dual system of the formulated problem by using the adapted simplex algorithm of linear programming. The implementation on given case studies demonstrates that the new method is capable of providing an optimum pit value. The computing effort required by the algorithm is still the main constraint in solving a large scale problem. The technique provides open pit mine planners with an alternative tool in using a commercial linear programming software which is capable of solving a general transportation problem. The selected software must be able to handle a large scale problem, and it needs an additional effort td formulate the problem and transform a result into the ultimate pit limit solution.

Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

Operation of a pilot-scale Floatex density separator was studied using a pyrite concentrate slurry feed. Experimental measurements were further utilized in parameterization of a hindered settling simulation model. The model incorporates particle slip velocity calculation and also a separation efficiency function, adjusted to describe the feed material characteristics. The model was used to compute the overflow and underflow compositions when both fluidization bed pressure and teeter water flow rates were varied. In addition, prediction accuracy and the model validity were evaluated. The simulations gave good results when the teeter interstitial velocities were moderate enough to avoid excessive turbulence in the fluidization. Prediction of the cumulative overflow and underflow size distributions in most experiments yielded essentially less than 10% relative error between the sample data and the estimated value of the 50% passing sizes.

Regarding the March 1991 ME technical paper by De Souza and Moore: For more than a decade since my February 1981 article on how to use modern metric, which SME-AIME had decided to do, I have monthly pointed out metric errors to the editors. In part, I do this because there has been no action to al low editors to fix figures and tables or to allow them to require authors to do so. The latest resulting atrocity provokes this discussion of vibrating drill handle units being stated in decibels.

The discovery of rhenium on the ion exchange resin used at the uranium in-situ leach operations at Palangana (Texas) led to a laboratory study on the possible methods of recovery. Rhenium, present in small amounts in the ammonium carbonate leach liquors as the perrhenate anion, Re04-, concentrated on the anion exchange resin, which was a factor of ten more selective for rhenium than for uranium. Various elution systems were investigated for stripping the rhenium from the columns after the uranium had been eluted with chloride or nitrate solutions. Although the perchlorate ion was most efficient on a molar basis, nitrate ion combined the benefits of efficiency and low cost. A 3[N] or stronger concentration of nitrate containing up to 0.5[N] H+ was found to be the system of choice. A rhenium sulfide concentrate containing up to 14% Re was obtained from these effluents by hydrogen sulfide precipitation. Preliminary experiments were run to produce rhenium metal powder by oxidation of the concentrate to NH4Re04 followed by hydrogen reduction at elevated temperature.

Research is probably the least understood and the most underrated or overrated, depending on the circumstances, function of the corporate enterprise. Some companies become engaged in research because they consider it to be vital to their very existence, others in order to develop new business, and some with no clearer objective than to keep up with the competition. Whole new industries have resulted from research activities, such as the Xerox copier, the transistor, the computer, and have affected considerably our way of life. Companies have prospered or perished by pursuing the successes or failures of their research organizations. However. despite the tremendous effect that research has had on our modern civilization and the billions which are spent on it annually, we have not as yet been able to develop many hard and fast rules as to how to conduct it effectively and to a successful end.1 This section discusses the role of research in the United States and in the mineral industry and describes a few of the criteria and guidelines which have been developed to assist in increasing the probability for success in industrial research. Broadly speaking, the purpose of industrial research is to make a significant contribution to the long-term viability and the profitability of the sponsoring company. The sum total of technological developments has been a principal factor in establishing the United States as a world leader and the controlling element in the nation's balance of trade with foreign powers. The international aspect of most mineral commodities is a significant factor in the business decision-making of most domestic mining companies and should be an important factor in the operation of research and development (R & D) programs in these companies. The National Science Board has reported that in recent yean other nations have been gaining on the United States over practically the entire range of science. 2,3 On the positive side, the NSB reported a strong position for the US in the results derived from its investment in R & D. If the United States is to maintain a favorable trade balance, it must create new know-how through technological innovation in order to create new industrial products, processes, and services for which there is a global demand. As expressed by Chauncey Starr, president of the Electric Power Research Institute, "Unlike resources found in nature, technology is a man-made resource whose abundance can be continuously increased, and whose importance in determining the world's future is also increasing."' In recent years, the greatly in- creased pressures for environmental quality and energy conservation have enhanced further the role of technical innovation in insuring the future survival of the domestic industry. Technology is the challenge of American industry, and it is a challenge which the mineral industry must also accept, for processed minerals are the very raw materials and energy on which all of industry is based, it is technology which makes a mineral deposit into an ore reserve. The Natural of Industrial R D Research is usually thought of as being either basic or applied. Basic or fundamental research is the quest for knowledge and need not have any practical objective. Applied research is the search for a solution to a particular problem and therefore has a specific objective beyond the acquisition of new knowledge. Development is the next stage to the applied research experimentation and it generally consists of larger-scale tests to establish the technical and economic feasibility of the new process or product and to provide design information for its industrial implementation. The terms research and development are usually interconnected for the good reason that in many cases it is difficult to define where one ends and the other begins. For instance, in many cases, thermodynamic, kinetic, corrosion, and other research studies, which are needed to provide design data for an industrial plant, may prod in parallel with the pilot plant activities preparatory for this plant in order to conserve time. Often the final stages of a development project may involve the trial production of a new product for markeing tests or the trial operation of a new process on a "semi-industrial" scale pilot plant. "Replacing the century old rail tunnels that run beneath the Hudson River and carry about 200,000 passengers per day between New York to New Jersey has been a high priority for many years. But after Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast of the United States in 2012, the urgency to replace the tunnels increased dramatically. The Hudson Tunnels project is one of nine projects that make up the larger $30 billion Gateway Project. The Gateway Project has been called the most urgent infrastructure program in the country and the Hudson Tunnels is the most critical part of the project, as it will build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rebuild the existing and deteriorating North River Tunnel that connects New York and New Jersey.“Superstorm Sandy proved the level of resiliency of the tunnels, which was not very good,” Amtrak deputy chief engineer structures James Richter told attendees of the George A. Fox Conference in New York City on Jan. 23. Age and corrosive salts deposited by flood waters from the storm in 2012 have affected interior concrete and copper wiring in the tunnels. “Since then, things have been deteriorating and getting less reliable.”Richter, along with Mohammed Nasim, senior director engineering design, both with Amtrak, spoke at the 2018 George A. Fox Conference where more than 350 tunneling and underground construction professionals attended the conference at the Graduate Center of the City University if New York to share insights about the complexities many of them face on daily basis.Under the theme of “Managing construction of complex underground projects: Strategies for tunneling in populated areas,” the one-day conference featured presentations from some of the top minds in the tunneling and underground construction industry. The presentations touched on everything from the highly technical challenges of constructing tunnels through changing geology while working beneath cities and rivers, to navigating the complex financial issues and contracts that come with the projects that have many stakeholders.All of those challenges, and more are part of the Hudson Tunnels project. It is one of the best examples of the full complexities of a complex tunnel project, with the added pressure of securing funding from state and federal government entities under an increasingly tight deadline."

When BHP Copper's Lower Kalamazoo Project commenced production in January 1997, two of the four original hoists had been converted to hoist ore from the Lower K level. Conversions on these hoists not only allowed hoisting from a much deeper level, but also created a higher hoisting efficiency and higher capacity as well. Conversions included new drums, new cables, SCR drives and other solid state control technologies not available when the original hoists were installed. Two of the original hoists were installed in the 1950's and the other two were installed in the 1970's.

Drilling underground in the Grasberg De-watering drifts has routinely hit water aquifers with high flow rates and pressures. Two types of holes are utilized; pilot-holes to probe ahead of the tunnel development to intersect aquifers ahead of the face; and de-watering holes to de-water rock formations that will drain water from the Grasberg pit and allow tunnel development to proceed safely. Recently, rates of 1050 psi static pressure have been recorded with flows from a NQ hole measured at 1350 gpm (US). The water flows can be slightly acidic, necessitating the use of stainless steel collar gear to resist corrosion. These rates were anticipated and contingencies were planned early to deal with these conditions. The collar gear is used to control water flows whereby the water is treated as an important resource. As a result, pm has established procedures to maintain safety of the drill crews, enable coring of the rock and to maintain safety of the miners who are driving the drifts.

Concrete pipes and small boxes have been installed by the jacking method. This paper will describe a recent project were large concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. This project is in the city of Boston, MA. By now everyone in the USA knows something about this project. The project official name is The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T). This is the biggest public work project in the USA right now, with an estimated construction cost of 14 billions. The main objective of the CA/T project is to replace an existing artery built in the 1950s to increase capacity and safety. One section of the new artery will cross under several railroad tracks near the South Station. To construct the section of the new artery under these tracks, big concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. The jacking method can be used to install pipes, small concrete boxes, and the CA/T project has demonstrated that big concrete road tunnel boxes can be installed by jacking.

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. A detailed study of carrier flotation of kaolin clay using calcite showed the major beneficiation mechanism to be enhanced aggregation between anatase and calcite under intense agitation conditions. In order to develop an understanding of this selective aggregation, surface charge characteristics of kaolinite, anatase and calcite were studied under simulated flotation conditions. Zeta potential of all these minerals tended towards a constant negative value in ole- ate solutions under certain conditions possibly due to adsorption or precipitation of oleate on them. However, whereas the zeta potential of anatase in the oleate solutions was not influenced by the agitation level, that of kaolinite was found to be strongly dependent on the agitation intensity. The effect of oleate on zeta potential of kaolinite was reduced by an increase in agitation intensity. It is suggested that oleate is much more firmly bound to the surface of the anatase and that this preferential attachment is responsible for the enhanced selective aggregation of the anatase with calcite. Agitation level plays a major role in carrier flotation since intense agitation is considered to en- hance both the chemisorption of oleate on anatase and preferential detachment of calcium oleate precipitate from the kaolinite surface, all of this producing a large difference in the surface properties of anatase and kaolinite, and hence in their tendency to aggregate with calcite.

Through the USGS's National Coal Availability program, coal resource appraisals have been completed for three 7.5-minute quadrangles (Willow Crossing, Colstrip East, Colstrip SW) in the Powder River Basin area of southeastern Montana. Available coal reserves (original reserves minus tonnages affected by current restrictions) vary from 44 to 70 percent of the original reserves. Major restrictions impacting each area also vary. In each area, one or two beds contain most of the reserves, but up to eleven beds contain available coal. The main beds in completed studies are the Knobloch, Rosebud, Sawyer and Flowers-Goodale. Three additional areas (six 7.5-minute quadrangles) are in preparation.

Theoretical considerations, experimental results and plant experience have lead to a new design concept called the unit reactor approach. It has been successfully implemented to the largest flotation cell on the market, the 4000 cu ft OK TankCell. The work has also lead to a new operating idea called size specific flotation. The paper discusses these concepts in the view of full scale field experiments. In large scale porphyry copper flotation experiments conducted in Chile the new large TankCell with its new low energy input Free Flow mechanism out-performed the more conventional designs. The recovery was substantially better, especially in the coarse fractions. In some experiments the difference in total recovery was up to 10%-units and the savings in total energy consumption at the same time over 40%.
