"Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

The procedure consists of collecting uncontaminated, water, sediment and rock chip samples of the appropriate quantity and/or dimensions to meet the needs of analysis.

Scan electron micrographs, SEM's, will be shown of representative refractory clays from Missouri deposits, with counterparts from other localities. The story is in the pictures, ("1000 words in each picture"), but clay types include the following. Plastic, semi-plastic, and semi-flint "fire clays" of Missouri have textures which appear to retain certain relic texture of ball clay. Flint clay is composed of tightly interlocking packets, sheaves, and books of kaolinite. Diaspore and boehmite mineral textures characterize those "clays". Surface-boulder diaspore shows very pronounced recrystallization and crystal enlargement from original, unexposed first-grade diaspore.

The Mine safety and Health Administration (MSHA) formed the Mine Ventilation Bleeder and Gob Training Committee in 1993. This committee was charged with developing a training course designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of practical bleeder ventilation systems. The course will probably include a discussion on the theory behind bleeder system design, an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of the basic bleeder system types, case studies, and a review of the systems currently in use. A database on active underground bituminous coal mines, gob areas, and the bleeder systems presently used was developed from questionnaires distributed to nine Coal Mine Safety and Health (CMS&H) districts. Representative systems were selected for thorough investigation to develop case studies. This paper introduces some of the material to be included in the course, including a description of basic bleeder system designs, a review of a portion of the database, and facts about the gob areas and bleeder systems investigated for the development of case studies.

Fully-bonded rock bolts have been widely used in construction sites and mines in recent years. The purpose of this investigation is to prove the effectiveness of rock bolt supports in unstable ground through in-situ tests and numerical analysis. 2. MEASUREMENTS AND PROCEDURES OF IN-SITU TESTS The fully-bonded rock bolts as the mine road¬way supports were tested in the Fukasawa mine which is located in the northeast district of Japan (Fig. 1). The Fukasawa mine (one of the Kuroko mines) started the production in 1973, and the present monthly production is slightly less than 20,000 tons. The ore deposit which exsists at about 400 m depth is divided into several small lenticular shaped bodies. They are distributed apporiximately 1500 m in NW-SE direction and 700 m in NE-SW direction. The hanging wall is basaltic lava and the footwall is tuff. The rocks surrounding the ore bodies are soft but relatively intact, so the trackless mining system has been adopted from the beginning of the development.

Nickel ores may be classified into two major categories : sulphide ores, and oxidized lateritic ores, these latter containing nearly 80% of the known reserves of the metal (1). Two types of lateritic ores are recognized; ores high in iron but low in magnesia and silica are known as "limonitic", while ores low in iron but containing high percentages of magnesia and silica are called "silicate" (see Table I). Sulphide ores can be beneficiated readily by conventional ore dressing techniques and the technology for nickel recovery from such ores has been well tested in a number of commercial processes (1-4). Unfortunately, no economically viable process for the concentration of nickel from low-grade deposits has yet been developed, and so only the high grade ores are able to be worked profitably. Silicate ores have been treated pyrometallurgically for the production of ferronickel (2) (3) (5); limonitic ores have been processed hydrometallurgically to produce nickel metal (2) (3) (6) (7).

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) service to New York City is limited to Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan, which is operating at its practical capacity for the commuter railroad. This situation imposes serious considerations for future growth and limits the destination of many Long Island commuters. The East Side Access Project will provide a connection of the LIRR to the landmark Grand Central Terminal (GCT)on the East Side of Manhattan. The construction of the connection will require significant tunneling and underground work utilizing a variety of construction techniques. In Queens, the connection will require five soft ground tunnels using pressurized face tunnel boring machine. In Manhattan, the connection will require a series of rock tunnels and caverns connecting to two deep large station caverns under GCT to accommodate eight tracks with four platforms in a stacked configuration. The caverns housing train rooms are connected to the lower level of GCT where a large concourse will be provided. With a budget of $4.3 Billion, The East Side Access Project is the largest transportation project ever undertaken in New York City. This paper provides an overview of the project, discusses its environmental and the engineering challenges, and provides an insight into the design development to date.

Evaporation and crystallization processes are used extensively in the mining industry to provide many pro-ducts. In the case of solution mining evaporators are used to concentrate, or to concentrate and crystallize the raw materials being mined. In the case of underground, or strip mining dissolving and crystallization are used in many processes in order to purify the ore to saleable materials. Presently evaporators and crystallizers are being used in the production of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, lithium chemicals, aluminum, and many others. The evaporator is a device designed to remove water or solvent from a solution. In an evaporator the energy released by steam condensing on one side of the heat transfer surface is transferred to the product solution on the other side of the heat transfer surface. As long as the boiling temperature of the product liquor is below the condensing temperature of the steam, the product solution will absorb heat. This heat absorption causes vaporization of the water (solvent) in the product solution resulting in concentration of the product. The simplest evaporator is the single effect evaporator. If we assume the feed introduced into the single effect evaporator is at its boiling point, ignore radiation losses, and assume the steam into the heat exchanger is dry and saturated, then the heat transferred will correspond to the latent heat of vaporization. Therefore, one kilogram of condensing steam will produce one kilogram of evaporation. Economies in energy usage compared to the single effect evaporator can be made by using multiple effect evaporators, or vapor recompression evaporators.

An investigation of several trace elements distributed among sulfide minerals from deposits located in the southeastern United States was conducted. The deposits investigated are distributed within both the Blue Ridge Province and the Piedmont Province, which are contiguous geographic provinces. Twenty five deposits were examined;' eleven in the Blue Ridge Province and fourteen in the Piedmont Province. Figure 1 shows the locations of deposits investigated. In the deposits investigated, the mineral phases examined were pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These phases were chosen because of their relatively widespread occurrence, although no pyrrhotite was seen in the Piedmont Province. A total of 116 polished surfaces of ores were prepared, and mineral phases were collected from these surfaces for analysis. Samples were analyzed for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. A total of 372 analyses were made. Trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following standard procedures. In this study, trace elements are defined as those elements which are present in the mineral but which do not affect the chemical formula for that mineral. Lead is considered as a trace element only in ores where little or no lead sulfide could be identified as a distinct mineral phase.

This is a study of the impact of cyanide from mining waste on riparian communities, primarily vegetation, near Whitewood Creek, down-stream from Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. Cyanide is used in gold processing and the effluent, until fairly recently, was discharged directly into Gold Run Creek which empties into Whitewood Creek. Vegetation, soil, and water were collected from four different sites over a six month period, and samples tested for cyanide concentration. Data indicate a relationship between cyanide in soil and its uptake by certain plants, also, that the Homestake cleanup effort has made the stream viable again.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. The Davis magnetic tube concentrator is a laboratory machine designed to separate a small sample of pulverized magnetic iron ore into magnetic and non-magnetic fractions. It was developed in 1921 by mechanization of a test previously performed manually. (1)(2)(3)(1) No significant changes have been made in the design of the apparatus since that time. The Davis magnetic tube test continues to serve as a practical basis for judging the amenability of an ore to magnetic separation and for controlling magnetic separation plant operations. The apparatus consists of an inclined cylindrical glass tube supported adjacent to closely spaced pointed poles of a powerful C-magnet. (Figure 1). To conduct a tube test, a sample of a suitably prepared ore is poured into the water-filled tube. With wash water flowing through, the tube is oscillated to gradually reject the weakly magnetic ore particles until the desired degree of separation is attained. Both the magnetic concentrate and the tailings may be recovered for examination.

Many underground instabilities, such as excessive shield loading and roof falls, occur at longwall faces causing safety problems and production losses. Such instability problems are directly related to roof conditions which can be categorized using geological information. . However, most geologic information describing anomalies and variations of immediate and main roofs are not available before mining resulting in unexpected problems in a longwall face. It is apparent that the evaluation of these geologic anomalies provides a great benefit for longwall stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate roof categories associated with geological anomalies employing fuzzy set theory. The evaluation is based on real-time monitoring information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting, and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing roof conditions and evaluating of roof similarities.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. "Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

The Freeport Sulphur Company operates four sulphur mines in the coastal marsh area-03 South Louisiana. Employing the Frasch process of mining, approximately 13-million gallons of water per day is heated to a mining temperature of 325°F and is injected into the sulphur bearing formations of the four mines. A volume of cold waste water, roughly equal to the Input, is removed from the formations and presents a disposal problem. Two additional mines are currently being developed and will increase the disposal volume by an additional 5-million gallons per day. Although these properties are in a relatively small area, geographically speaking, as shown in Figure 1, they each represent a separate disposal problem with the treatment methods designed for the individual mine.

A characteristic common to most tailings dam failures caused by earthquakes or excessive rain storm is that the tailings tend to liquefy and flow for substantial distances as a viscous fluid, with the potential for extensive damage to property and life. Failures of El Cobre, Chile (1965), Mochikoshi, Japan (1978), Aberfan, Wales (19661, Buffalo Creek, West Virginia (1972) are examples of such catastrophic incidents. In these four incidents more than 400 lives were lost, and the loss of property was approximately $200 million. In order to be able to assess the potential for damage in case of such a failure, it is necessary to predict the possible extent of flow slide movement. This paper discusses simple procedures for performing such analyses. Also, in order to illustrate the use of these analysis procedures in tailings dam design, two case histories are analyzed.

In most mining operations, some degree of selectivity is applied. Whether one deals with surface or underground operation, ore zones, and waste zones are defined not only on the basis of the value of the ore contained, but also taking mining constraints into account. A number of computer techniques are presented which can be used to determine the optimum location of the footwall and hanging wall of ore zones intersected by drill holes. Minimum mining width and minimum internal waste width constraints are taken into account, as well as other economic constraints. The system is presented as an integral part of a larger manumatic ore reserve and mine planning system.

The Rowland Coal Preparation Plant is located on Workman's Creek in Raleigh County, West Virginia, approximately 20 miles Northwest of Beckley and 10 miles Southeast of Ameagle. It is owned and operated by the Rowland Division of Consolidation Coal Company. This paper describes the plant flowsheet, process considerations that were evaluated in its development, and observations made during and since the plant was constructed. The final flowsheet was developed specifically to wash the coal from the Rowland Mine and contains several equipment combinations and applications heretofore never placed in a single, commercial operation. The major process equipment is presented in a functional description of the flowsheet. The coal reserves are leased from the Rowland Land Company and consist primarily of #2 Gas and Middle Eagle coals and various major splits of the Middle Eagle seam. The Rowland Coal Preparation Plant was designed to process 560 TPH of raw coal consisting of 50 percent #2 Gas coal intimately mixed with 50 percent Middle Eagle coal and containing lumps no larger than a 12-inch cube.
