Because of their reduction in capital costs, virtual elimination of maintenance. ease of control and "cleanliness"; interest in electrical techniques has accelerated. 1,2 Resistance cable and other heaters have been given some attention. but less well known in the recent introduction of thermal conductive coatings. This paper is addressed to the use of thermal conductive coatings for heating fluid-transport piping and storage tanks. Emphasis will be given to the simplicity, efficiency, and versatility of design and application which their unique properties further contribute to the general economics of electrical heating.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. ABSTRACT Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models. INTRODUCTION There are many definitions of virtual reality (VR) that include various levels of immersion and features [1]. Some definitions refer to specific technologies [2], while others are limited to visualization [3]. For this paper, a more general definition of VR will be adopted. VR is defined as the collection of hardware and software that interactively engages users and stimulates their senses within a synthetic or virtual environment. From a hardware standpoint, this can include anything from a phone to a head-mounted display (HMD) to a large-scale theater as well as speakers, microphones, haptic sensors, and interaction devices. The software used to create virtual environments (VEs) generally includes a game engine, custom software components and libraries, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical assets. Recent hardware and software advances have increased the fidelity and availability of VR. New and improved technologies including HMDs and high-resolution monitors and projectors can display sharper, more detailed visualizations. For example, in the past five years between the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) and the HTC Vive Pro (2018), there was a three-fold increase in resolution along with a 50% increase in the refresh rate. Furthermore, despite early claims that low-cost VR technology was readily available [4], computational power has not been sufficient to handle the large amount of data generated by these systems [5]. In the past five years, however, rendering speeds have more than doubled and memory has more than tripled [6], allowing these visualizations to be incorporated into higher-complexity and -fidelity VEs that more closely mirror the real world. Similarly, software capabilities have also significantly improved through game engine advancements and feature development. In the past several years, game engines have added and improved features such as physics, lighting, platform support (e.g. Android), and asset development integration. Some of the current leading commercial game engines are Amazon Lumberyard, CryEngine, Unreal, and Unity, but this can quickly change as is evident in the literature [7, 8].

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with a medium-sized surface blasthole drill shroud with a dry dust collector system. CFD models were constructed in ANSYS FLUENT Version 15. Previously run experiments conducted in the NIOSH full-scale drill shroud laboratory were utilized to validate the models. The setup values in CFD models were calculated using experimental data obtained from the drill shroud laboratory and measurements of test material particle size. Subsequent simulation results were compared with the experimental data for test scenarios, including 0.14 m3/s (300 cfm) bailing airflow with 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios and 0.24 m3/s (500 cfm) bailing airflow cases with 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios. For the 2:1 and 3:1 ratios, results showed the calculated dust concentrations from the CFD models were within the 95% confidence intervals of the lab experimental dust concentrations. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, to calculate the model dust input, and to validate the models based on experimental data. Problem regions were identified and revealed by the simulation of a dry dust collector system. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud. INTRODUCTION In surface mines, production drilling is an essential process in blasting which fractures the hard rock overburden for removal. Holes with a predetermined pattern, diameter, and depth are drilled into the overburden to introduce explosives. During the drilling process, considerable amounts of respirable dust are produced. Past research conducting area sampling at blasthole drills has documented time-weighted average respirable dust concentrations ranging from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m3 [1] and 1.04 to 52.30 mg/m3 [2]. These high dust concentrations, which may contain silica, can lead to respirable dust over-exposures for the drill operator, drill helper, and other personnel in the vicinity. These over-exposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is ultimately fatal. In order to prevent the development of silicosis to mine workers, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulates the exposure to respirable dust. For metal/nonmetal (M/NM) mines, MSHA has adopted the threshold limit values recommended in 1973 by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) [3]. The total airborne dust standard is 10 mg/m3. However, if the sample contains greater than 1 percent quartz (the most common form of crystalline silica), a respirable dust standard is calculated with the following equation: Respirable dust standard = (10 mg/m3) / (% respirable quartz + 2)"

The borate deposits of Death Valley, first exploited in 1882, were a major world source of boron-bearing products until shortly after very large deposits near Boron, California (Kramer) came on stream in 1926. Borate mining in Death Valley then became moribund, with most extant deposits held as reserves backing Kramer. Tenneco began borate operations following acquisition of claims in 1967 and is the only active borate producer inside Death Valley National Mon¬ument. Borate ores, confined to the lower Furnace Creek Formation (early to middle Pliocene), initially precipitated in a shallow lake fed by boron-rich volcanic hot springs associated with the Basin and Range province. Later diagenesis and remobilization plus regional folding, faulting, and erosion altered and complicated originally simple borate mineralogy and distribution. Dominant ore minerals are ulexite (NaCaB509.8H20), probertite (NaCaB509.5H20), and colemanite (Ca2B6011.5H20). Tenneco currently operates two open pits near Ryan, California. Mining is by bulldozer-pushed scrapers hauling waste and front-end loader/off-highway truck combinations for ore and waste haulage. Archeological, environmental, and aesthetic considerations influence both mine plans. Boraxo Pit, opened in 1970, has deep ore (stripping ratio 10 to 13:1) which occurs along a fault and as beds in shale on the hanging wall. Problems include pit wall instability (adverse bedding), non¬ripable calcareous shale (11,000 fps), and mixed ore separation. Sigma Pit, opened in 1975, has shallow (stripping ratio 1 to 1). low dipping, bedded ore in shale. Massive ulexite and "granular" un- cohesive colemanite present problems in mining and milling. Colemanite is crushed to -6 inches, washed, dried at 350°F, then calcined at 800°F with 100 tpd capacity. Crushed (-6 inch) ulexite or probertite is Raymond milled to customer specifications with a capacity of 1000 tpd.

"Scrubbing both horizontal (drum) and vertical (attrition) are considered simple unit operations in the beneficiation of phosphate ores. In general, the operating conditions are fixed at high solids content based on the experience of the engineering or equipment manufacturing company responsible of designing this beneficiation step. Nevertheless, scrubbing is a complex unit operation designed to clean the surfaces of phosphate mineral particles of slimes, break loose weak inclusions or attached particles of impurities, and break aggregates of clayish material. Therefore, it is considered that as high solids content as possible should be used to enhance particle-particle interactions (impact and rubbing) without taking into consideration the rheology of the system. However, scrubbing unit operations design requires studying the balance between the increase of particle-particle interactions with the cushion effect that may occur when slimes, clays and fines decrease the availability of free water increasing the apparent viscosity of the phosphate slurry up to that of a paste consistency. This paper presents data from laboratory tests to determine the best operating conditions for the design of these unit operations based on the highest P2O5 grade obtained with the lowest impurities for different size fractions. INTRODUCTION In the beneficiation of phosphate ores, unit operations such as horizontal scrubbing (drum) and vertical scrubbing (attrition) are considered simple unit operations. Therefore, little attention is given to the design of horizontal and vertical scrubbing during the basic engineering studies, and the detail engineering stage, the manufacturers recommending “standard” units and operating conditions based on their experience. Due diligence of several beneficiation phosphate plants at industrial scale indicates that a deficient scrubbing of the phosphate ore results in significant problems in downstream unit operations, such as classification, clarification, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, dewatering, and filtration. Scrubbing is in fact a complex unit operation designed to clean the surfaces of phosphate mineral particles of slimes (clays and fines), break loose weak inclusions or attached particles of impurities, and break aggregates of clayish material. Two phenomena occur, the particle-particle interaction (impact and rubbing), and the rheological effects of releasing significant amount of fines into the slurry. Therefore, high solids contents are recommended to enhance the particle-particle interactions, which may result in a change in the rheological regime of the system due to the slimes, clays, and fines decreasing the availability of free water. This increases the apparent viscosity of the system up to that of paste consistency resulting in a cushion effect that suppresses scrubbing. Under these conditions, not all fines are release and rejected (deslimed), downstream unit operations being affected by the release of clays, resulting in P2O5 losses."

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

Considerable amounts of the world's known reserves of elemental sulfur are found near the surface in areas of volcanic activity both active and inactive. Because such deposits cannot in general-be mined by the well-known Frasch process, and because other methods of recovery have not proven to be economically competitive except in isolated instances, at present these reserves remain relatively undeveloped. However, projections of world sulfur demand indicate that new sources of marketable sulfur will be needed in future years 2/, 19/. For this reason, recovery of elemental sulfur from these near-surface deposits is of continuing interest. Solvent extraction as an approach to recovery of elemental sulfur from open pit-mined ores of these non-Frasch deposits has received considerable attention particularly at the research and development level 3 /, 7/, l l /, 16/, 21/,23/, 29/ This method has been and continues to be attractive because it presents the potential of high sulfur recovery and purity of product coupled with a relatively simple process flowsheet in which low energy requirements and reasonable operating costs are thought to be possible. However, the physical and chemical characteristics of the native-sulfur ores, of elemental sulfur, and of the known solvents, have presented difficulties in the development of solvent extraction processes. Up to the present time, viable processes have not been realized within the framework of sulfur marketing conditions.

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended 524 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than one metre in width to pipes with a surface area of 128ha. The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments.

Experimentation was performed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved.

A new P(MAAA) latex was developed and used in separation of ultrafine apatite from calcite and silica by means of selective flocculation. The latex was found to flocculate selectively apatite from apatite/calcite and apatite/silica mixtures in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium silicate over a pH range from 9.1 to 9.4. The separation of apatite from calcite was more selective with sodium tripolyphosphate, while the results of the separation of apatite from silica were better when sodium silicate was used. In the apatite/calcite system, 90% apatite recoveries into a concentrate containing 34% P2O5 were possible in the presence of 4 mg/l of sodium tripolyphosphate at a latex dosage of 2.2 kg/t. In the apatite/silica system, 80% of apatite could be recovered into a concentrate containing 33% P2O5 in the presence of 20 mg/l of sodium silicate at a latex dosage of 1.1 kg/t. Deposition tests were used to study the interaction between the latex and the mineral surfaces. The results revealed that deposition density of the latex on apatite was higher than on calcite; the differences between the deposition onto these two minerals were higher at pH 9.2 than at 7.2. The results point to the stronger interaction between the latex and apatite surface when compared with the latex-calcite interactions.

The principal impurities in some feldspar ores are titanium and iron which impart color and in turn degrade the quality of the ore. The mineralogical investigations indicate that titanium element originates from mainly rutile with small amounts of sphene. Conventionally, fatty acids and particularly sodium oleate are extensively used in the flotation of colored minerals from feldspar ores with reasonable success. In this study, new reagents, oleoyl sarcosine and hydroxamate have been used to float colored impurities before and after magnetic separation. Oleoyl sarcosine is found to exhibit better results compared to fatty acids and hydroxamate. The mechanism of the action is elaborated on the basis of experimental data.

The high lithium demand forecasted for some high tech applications and batteries for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, in particular, has sparked increased exploration for lithium, particularly for lithium- and potassium-bearing brine deposits. The latter have generally followed the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) NI 43-101 guidelines on resource reporting, formulated for hard rock deposits (metals and industrial minerals). While a number of the requirements can be appropriately applied to brines, brines are fluids and require a specific analysis leading to a distinct set of reporting requirements. Brines cannot be considered industrial minerals because the various elements occur as ions in a dynamic fluid, rather than being chemically bonded in a solid. Although chemicals are produced from brines, brines have no relation to industrial mineral deposits. This article analyzes the recently released (Nov. 1, 2012) document CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines, in light of the practical knowledge available from existing brine operations. It recommends modifications to the guidelines, which, if applied in their present format, will result in overstating resources and reserves and mislead potential investors. The CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines document is generally descriptive and does not fully address the methodology for brine resource or reserve definition. Lithium and other elements (potassium, magnesium) are contained in a fluid, the hydrologic characterization of which should be the principal focus of a brine exploration program. The fundamental requirement in defining lithium brine resources and reserves in a salar is the identification and definition of those formations ? the aquifers ? that will yield brine in a usable quantity to a well, because brines can only be extracted by pumping wells. Fine-grained sediments will never, as required in the summary Table 1, have ?reasonable prospects of economic extraction,? cannot be considered and, therefore, need not be tested. However, the guidelines recommend the collection of solid samples and a high-core recovery for laboratory testing of various sediments instead of focusing on the brine.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

The possibility of using surfactants as wetting agents for the suppression of sulphide ore dust has been investigated. Numerous surfactants were examined to determine their characteristics and to investigate their ability to improve the wetting of the sulphide ore dust. However, the surfactants selected as suitable dust suppressors proved to have a negative effect on the flotation of the ore contaminated with such reagents. A method was developed to eliminate the detrimental influence of dust-suppressing surfactants. It consisted of surfactants adsorption on activated carbon and separation of loaded carbon prior to flotation. The technique is simple and requires minimal changes in the plant flowsheet.

"Improved safety and more environmentally friendly operation are basic advantages of mechanical excavation over the drill and blast method. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are one of the types of these machines which have recently been increased use in Turkey. The excavated hole with RBM is more stable than other methods and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. This paper is a summary of the performance of a RBM in the Balya PB-Zn Mine in Turkey. Length and diameter of the ventilation shaft are 200 m and 2.4 m, respectively. The geological and geotechnical characteristics of the strata excavated in the mine are first given and later the validity of a model developed to predict the machine performance is discussed. It is believed that the results of this study and the model given to estimate the performance of the RBM will be useful guide for future applications. INTRODUCTION Raise boring technology was developed to meet the demands of the mining industry, but has also found numerous applications in tunneling or infrastructure projects for ventilation purposes. Raise boring machine uses a small diameter drill rod, around 230-350 mm to drill a pilot hole down to the required depth up to around 2000 m. Once the pilot hole has been drilled to the desired depth, a reamer of up to 9 m diameter is attached to the drill rod. The reamer is then pulled back up to the upper level, creating a round shape. Continues operation provides a faster advance rate than other methods. RBMs are suitable both in hard and soft rock. The flexibility in different angles and diameters is a great advantage compared to drill and blast excavation method. RBM creates a shaft with smooth walls which usually does not require lining. The hole is more stable than a drilled and blasted method and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. Raise boring is convenient method in competent rock; however several problems are faced in geological formations where geological discontinuities are dominant. Moreover, assembly and disassembly time may be long in some cases. The performance and operational parameters of the excavating machine should be predicted prior to starting the excavation operations in order to fulfill the economic requirements of the project. In the light of this fact, the main objective of this investigation is to summarize a case study on raise boring machine performance and suggest a new model based on laboratory test results. First, general description of the mine and project are provided. Then, the physical and mechanical characteristics of the samples taken from project area are discussed. In the third section, performance and operational parameters of RBM are investigated to understand the machine behavior in different rock characteristics and also to collect a useful database for further investigation. In the fourth section, a new model for performance estimation of RBM are recommended."

Investment decision for large mining projects imply an enormous financial risk and therefore, require a more complex risk evaluation methodology taking into account all sources of uncertainty from each process in the project value chain. Generally, the main sources of risk are those related to uncertainty on grade and other techical variables of the orebody. In this study, conditional simulation is applied to develop a risk management model to quantify and to manage financial risk associated to uncertainty on the grade of the orebody. The model was validated in case study on a real porphyry copper orebody in Chile.

Bench top centrifuge is used to study the consolidation behavior of phosphatic clays. A mathematical model (based on first order kinetics) is developed to describe the relationship between the void ratio (at any time) and the effective stress. Permeability of the sediment as a function of the void ratio is also described. The obtained data are compared with that obtained by other consolidation testing methods. Centrifuge results indicate that consolidation data may be developed in a short period of time (hours) as compared to days or weeks when other techniques are used.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division was commissioned for operation in 1981. The MRS was originally designed for longwall shield research and was the only hydraulic press in the world with the capability to apply biaxial loads to these large structures. The results of this forty-year research program have contributed to improved performance and increased knowledge of longwall shields, mobile roof supports and hydraulic cylinders in the mining industry. Also, considerable research and development have been conducted to develop standing support technologies for the mining industry. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) was developed to evaluate how these various technologies can impact and improve both ground control conditions and mine safety. Additional MRS research has included the performance of ventilation stopping walls including the development of a new testing protocol to evaluate the transverse loading capabilities under arching load conditions and evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground mine roof surface control. The NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator has been a reliable and valuable tool for the past forty years for the evaluation of safety structures used in mining, and this research has contributed significantly to the advancement toward safer mines. This paper will summarize those research results and provide a glimpse of planned future activities.

The Cyprus Pima Mining Company's open pit operation was started in 1957 with the normal assumption that the ore reserve estimate was accurate within an acceptable range of values. At that tine reserves were law - volume (+10 million tons) and high grade (+1.5% Cu). Several periods of growth have brought the operation to its present production level of 55,000 tons per day of ore and +125,000 tons of waste. Over the years, a number of attempts to refine and polish the ore reserve figures have been made using a variety of established standard procedures. None of these attempts have produced results which are totally satisfactory, particularly when comparisons are made between ore reserve estimates and short to medium range production figures. Other refinements were tried using adaptations of established methods combined with computer modeling techniques. The resulting mine-model ore blocks were an improvement but they still tended to show too match tonnage of mill feed, often at too low a grade. One attempt at Kriging had only limited success. Statistical studies of operations data revealed relationships which could be used to subdivide ore blocks in much the same way as they are actually mined. Comparisons thus far between these newly developed ore blocks and production data show that the new method of evaluation yields excellent results. A new, better procedure for estimation of ore reserves apparently has been developed for the Cyprus Pima deposits. The specific procedures seem likely to have direct application to other, similar operations. The methods used to develop the procedures could be of value to still other operations.
