A ventilation research study was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and a cooperating trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming, USA. The mine operation uses the longwall mining method in trona bed 17, a commonly mined unit in the region. The longwall face length is 228 m (750 ft), and caving on the face occurred up to the back of the longwall shields. The mine is ventilated using a main blowing fan and a bleeder shaft. For this study, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was released in two separate monitoring experiments. For the first experiment, tracer gas was released on the face, this test focused on airflow along the longwall face of the active panel. Face test showed the airflow patterns to be more complex than just head-to-tail flow in the main ventilation air stream on the active panel. For the second experiment, tracer gas was released 2 crosscuts inby the face on the headgate side, this test focused on gas transport in the mined-out portion of the same active panel. Gob test showed a pathway of movement through the front of the active panel gob that moved outby from the tailgate corner. The primary pathway of tracer gas movement in the active panel gob was towards the headgate and tailgate bleeders and out of a bleeder shaft. The rate of movement towards the back of the gob was measured to be 0.19 m/s (37 fpm).

To reduce the environmental footprint of hydrometallurgical processing of black mass from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a green leaching system based on glycine and sodium metabisulfite (Gly-SMS) was proposed. The leaching study demonstrated that the highest cobalt and lithium recoveries of 100 percent and 99.8 percent were achieved under optimal conditions. The leaching mechanism revealed that the dissolution of LiCoO2 in the Gly-SMS solution followed the shrinking core model. The apparent activation energies for cobalt and lithium were determined as 48.05 and 41.51 kJ/mol, respectively, indicating a surface chemical reaction controlling mechanism. The leachate was then processed by an acidification- precipitation technique with oxalic acid as the precipitant to remove cobalt. Glycine complexes with metal ions by zwitterionic ligand and recycles in the leaching-precipitation circuit, reducing the reagent cost. Compared to other studies, this leaching system has near-neutral operating conditions and is cost-effective, making it an economically viable alternative for treating cathode materials from spent LIBs.

For the pillars, which have been standing long after mining, the stability depends much on the weathering action in the presence of mine moisture. From the field observations, it has been found that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of pillar stability if the coal seam contains partings or binders in it. The weathering action degrades both the partings and coal in terms of their load bearing capacity as the mine moisture penetrates into them. This paper investigates the effect of weathering action on coal and partings in the laboratory. In the field, the strength profile in the coal and the partings and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on them have been studied by using borehole penetrometer. In this paper, an attempt has also been made to establish formulae for time dependent strength of coal and partings.

Diesel fuel usage in the mining industry continues to escalate. This is because approximately 60 percent of all mined materials are surface extracted by large equipment using diesel fuel, which continues to increase in cost per gallon. For example, coal mining uses large equipment such as wheel loaders, wheel dozers, draglines and [ ] dredgers. In one year, three of the largest U.S. coal mining operations consumed approximately 567 million to 852 million L (150 million to 225 million gal) of diesel. At an approximate cost average of $3.25/gal the expenditure on diesel is $487 million to $731 million per year. So, are there any solutions that could reduce this cost burden? Yes, there are. Coal mining companies can extract less ore; use more efficient extracting equipment that consumes less fuel; wait for a significant reduction in the cost of fuel; or find and use technology that would create efficiencies that would lower the cost. Nanotechnology is one such technology that might provide the means to create the efficiencies that will significantly lower diesel fuel costs.

An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

"In China, most reserves of rich iron ores have now been depleted and sustainable development of low-grade iron ores has become a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of beneficiating a low-grade, hematite-magnetite ore (assaying 18.64% Fe) for subsequent utilization. In this study, process mineralogy and beneficiation of the ore were carried out in the laboratory. First, mineralogical investigation shows that the main metal minerals are hematite, magnetite and a little octahedrite that cannot be used at present, and the main gangue minerals include albite, quartz and ankerite. Based on the above, a combined process of magnetic separation and gravity concentration has been developed by using laboratory low- and high- intensity magnetic separators and a slimes shaking table, respectively. Factors affecting these separation methods are discussed, including process mineralogy on the tailings of the high-intensity separator, where the iron minerals were found to be finely disseminated in the gangue as inclusions. By applying a two-stage grinding step and a magnetic separation stage together with gravity concentration, a marketable iron concentrate assaying 60.79% Fe at a recovery of 60.23% can be obtained, when the feed assays 18.75%Fe, which provides some useful information for the sustainable use of low-grade iron ore.IntroductionIron is the world’s most commonly used metal. Steel, of which iron ore is the key ingredient, represents almost 95% of all metal used per year, primarily in structural engineering applications and for maritime purposes, automobiles and general industrial applications. The domestic supply of iron ore was 0.88 billion tons and about 0.628 billion tons of iron ore were imported in 2009."

A new flotation collector, benzyl arsonic acid, was used for the flotation of ilmenite. ESCA, Auger spectroscopy, and chemical analysis were used to investigate the correlation between the variation in surface constituents and the flotation recovery of ilmenite. Experiments indicated that, as the ratio of surface Ti ions/surface Fe ions increases, flotation recovery increases. pH regulation with an inorganic acid was found to be effective in changing the ratio of surface ions, and, hence, the flotation recovery.

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

This work evaluated the effect of bucket orientation and operating parameters on resistive forces and penetration for rubber tire loaders. The work used a 1:16 scale LHD model to test a rubber tire loader (RTL) bucket operating at different levels of tractive effort, speed, digging height, and rake angles in a full factorial design experiment. The work repeated the test on two different muck piles with different particle sizes and used generalized regression modeling to test the association of rake angle, tractive effort, speed, and digging height on penetration and resistive forces for RTL buckets. The results show that speed and tractive effort are more important in explaining RTL penetration and resistive forces than height above the floor and rake angle. Speed, tractive effort, and height above the floor are positively correlated to bucket penetration, whereas the rake angle is negatively correlated to penetration. Similarly, speed, tractive effort, rake angle, and height above the floor are all positively correlated to resistive forces incurred during initial penetration. The observation that the combined effect of speed and tractive effort is negatively correlated to penetration and resistive forces is a novel contribution that enhances our understanding of RTL loading. The results also show that the effect of speed, tractive effort, and height above the floor all change with changes in particle sizes. This work adds to the literature on the effect of rake angle, height above the floor, tractive effort, and speed on penetration and resistive forces for rubber tire loaders.

Hydrometallurgical production of zinc from concentrates is generally carried out by H2SO4 leaching. For the smooth operation of this process, some harmful components must be removed from the leach solution before the electrolysis stage; MgO is one of these compounds. Zinc concentrate samples from the Mount Isa mines were used in leaching tests. Leaching tests with an aqueous solution of H2SO4 and SO2 gas were carried out at various temperatures, pH levels and leaching durations. While duration and the pH value of the solution were effective parameters in H2SO4 leaching, temperature and pH were more effective in SO2 leaching for the removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3. Removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3 was generally achieved at low pH values. The results show that SO2 gas can be a good alternative to sulfuric acid in the leaching of MgCO3 and CaCO3

Electrostatic separation is one of the most misunderstood physical processes used to beneficiate minerals. Nonetheless, millions of tons of titanium ores, iron ores and other minerals are processed every year economically, efficiently and safely. Over the past ten years major advances in electrostatic separation and its application have occurred. New processes include dewatering clay slurries, separating halite and sylvite, and shape separation of vermiculite and gangue minerals. Electrostatic separation techniques are based on one of two methods, electrophoresis or dieleccrophoresis -- processes involving charged and uncharged particles respectively. In some cases, the combination of these two techniques has proven quite useful. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of the physical processes collectively called "electro- static separation" in order to enhance one's ability to define and consider new possibilities in mineral processing and other fields.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Basically, the actually existed correlation between spheres. grounding the model of sustainable development - economic, environmental and social- is given in a form of nomogram under Fig.1. At the Frood Mine of International Nickel, tests were begun in March 1966 to evaluate the use of low profile diesel Load- Haul-Dump equipment in cut-and-fill operations. In December 1966, this test was extended to drawpoint loading of caved ore at the Creighton Mine. The results of these tests conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of this equipment in the operations at International Nickel. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, production data and operating details. Also discussed in the paper are other trackless equipment which works with the Load-Haul-Dump carrier. Production and Safety comparisons are made with the slusher method in bulk mining, giving the reasons for replacing the slushers at the mines of International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, Ontario Division.

A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

Wet autogenous grinding is utilized in three iron ore concentrating plants operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI). This paper will trace some of the development in converting from the use of metal grinding mill liners to the use of rubber and will update the current performance of rubber liners in these applications. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company is a natural resources firm with major interests in iron ore mining and processing and oil and gas contract drilling. The company also has interests in oil shale, uranium, forest products, and Great Lakes shipping.

As a result of several recent methane/dust ignitions in surface auger and highwall mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of methane gas at these operations. Three mine sites were visited in western Kentucky and one in western Pennsylvania to collect run-of-mine coal samples for gas content determination using the modified-direct-method (MOM). Results indicate the samples emitted small quantities of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Either methane or nitrogen was the predominant gas released. The same gases were released after crushing the samples for residual gas content; however, nitrogen was the primary component of this fraction. Total ~as contents ranged from less than 0.01 cm /g to 0.54 cm3/g. The hydrocarbon gases probably originated during coalification. Other gases may have originated partially as a byproduct of coalification and partially as a result of other, near-surface processes. The data suggest that although methane quantities are small, desorption could occur at near surface conditions prior to mining. The desorbed methane could accumulate as a free gas in fractures in the coal bed or roof rock. When these fractures are penetrated by the auger, methane could rapidly enter the whole atmosphere possibly creating explosive conditions.
