Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods, and better hang up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste rock loads on chutes, walls, gates, and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mock-up of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com-pared. Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.

Freely accessible and non-confidential real-life geological data sets from mineral deposits are desirable for the wide range of applications in research and education. However, publicly available statistical data are limited in their number and quality—they contain reduced information about geological, geophysical, geotechnical, chemical, mineralogical, and other relevant properties of deposits. This makes such data insufficient for scientific purposes. However, the amount of geological knowledge obtained for a variety of deposits in the past allows the construction of an idealized synthetic ore body model using analytical approach. Such a model could be used for education purposes and testing basic scientific theories, e.g., visualization of deposit structure; teaching sampling strategies; testing new algorithms for mine planning; or comparing geostatistical modeling methods. This paper presents an analytical approach to simulate volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and shows how synthetic deposit model can be constructed and further used for studying sampling with drilling and simulating folding and faulting.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 had far reaching effects upon many aspects of mining, ventilation being no exception. In this paper, good ventilation procedures are briefly reviewed, and attention is focused on the changes brought about by the new Act. By way of illustration the ventilation system for a typical Pittsburgh Block system is developed and the requirements of the fan determined. This is then solved by an available computer program, and the application is evaluated. Figure 1 represents a projected system for a coal property 1 by 3 miles in plan at a depth of 1000 feet with a coal thickness of 6 feet and desired daily tonnage of approximately 7200 tons on a two-shift basis. Only one half of the mine is shown (north area) with a mirror image mining arrangement to be developed concurrently for the south area. Six working units are projected, three in each area, one on pillar extraction, another developing panel entries and a third on main entry development. A two-split system is used for each working section so that the continuous miner and bolting crews each have a separate split of air, and no equipment need pass through a line brattice. The old requirement of 6000 cfm at the last open crosscut has been increased to 9000 cfm, and for the first time a minimum quantity (3000 cfm) is stipulated at the face thus requiring either line brattice or an auxiliary fan. With the respirable dust requirement limited to 3 mg/m3, the use of a blower system is precluded and exhaust systems are virtually the only choice. Maintaining the line brattice within 10 feet of the working face at all times as required by the new law has a definite effect on the mining cycle and is most difficult at best. "A Yieldable Structure for Use in Areas of High Rock Stress & Deformation." Rock stress of up to 9000 psi have been recorded in the mines of the Coeur d'Alene Mining district. Associated with these large stresses are rock fractures and deformation. In order to maintain openings required for mining, large wood preparation structures are constructed to provide access to the work areas for men and materials. These wood raise preparation structures are costly to construct and maintain. Therefore a steel-foam concrete structure was designed and proposed for testing which would be less costly to construct, require no maintainence and maintain its structural integrity while allowing up to 53 inches of wall rock deformation.

1. Introduction The new Cleuson-Dixence development project in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps, involves the construction of a new link between the Grande-Dixence dam (still world recordholder with a height of 300 m) and a power house on the banks of the Rhone consisting of approximately 20 km tunnels and shafts, and involving a fall of about 1900 m. This 1200 MW project will replace an existing 900 MW structure built in the 1960s, no longer considered efficient. The new project comprises a head race drift about 15.8 km long, a surge tank, an inclined cascade shaft 4,2 km long, and an underground power station. The work for lots C and D (head race drift from Tortin to Tracouet, surge tank, six adits ans the complete inclined shaft) was awarded to our group (Prader, Locher, SELL, Losinger, Evéquoz, Dénériaz, Imboden and Bouygues). The geological conditions are: Lower part of the shaft (300 m) : sedimentary - sandstone and soft tertiary sandstone. In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. "INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

A novel system for the depression of pyrite and the ash-forming minerals has been developed. A metal ion, including but not restricted to Fe+2, is added to form a hydroxide coating on the pyrite or ash-forming mineral. A polymeric depressant is then added to attach to this re-surfaced mineral. Nearly 200 flotation tests with a 11 different coals indicate the effectiveness of this system. Many of the important process variables such as the coal source, frother-collector system, grind size and procedure, pH, metal ion, and depressant type and concentration have been studied.

Coal mining activity disturbs the natural equilibrium of in situ stress state such that the induced stresses deform the surrounding rock mass. Although the installation of roof supports typically prevents rock deformation, rock mass failure may still occur in bolted roof. The erratic failure of rock mass after few days to months and years of excavation is the result of time-dependent deformation of roof rock under constant surrounding stresses. In the current research, the triaxial laboratory creep experiments proved that Marcellus shale exhibits time-dependent deformation under constant stress that was smaller than the failure strength. However, unlike conventional experimental results, the time-dependent deformation did not depend on the level of constant stress. The often-neglected initial state of specimens and intrinsic heterogeneity highly influenced the time-dependent failure of Marcellus shale.

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

Management is a major part of sustainability research. Many different aspects of sustainability have already received significant research attention, but the management processes in mining from the perspective of their impact on society are less understood and integrated as a holistic frame. It is evident that mining technology has received major blame in past ecological disasters and major mining-induced environmental hazards, but the management-mining process has escaped unscathed. This should not have happened. Instead, the management processes should share equal blame with obsolete technology for the failure to identify and monitor potential environmental hazards before their inception of mining. We will present an emergent style of management for the future of mining. It challenges the actual ?mind-set? of mining management. It describes balance and equilibrium: physical, chemical, and biological in nature as an understanding of nature?s language, which is Geomimic along side ?the bottom line?. The goal is to minimize loss instead of maximize profits (waste design) at the design stage of mining and to develop clean technologies (nature's values) to achieve non-social environmental impacts that provide a prosperous legacy to future generations.

Having passed through the worst of times for industrial minerals demand, there are signs that the best of times lie ahead. If the downturn was the result of unsustainable economic policy, the path forward has everything to do with sustain-ably meeting the demands of more people enjoying higher standards of living than ever before. Minerals producers must be poised to understand and meet their requirements well into the next decade. Successfully marketing industrial minerals - the building blocks of a growing and increasingly urban world population - will depend on producers? ability to respond nimbly to a rapidly changing and regionally evolving macroeconomic environment. A renewed focus on energy conservation, sustainable agriculture and building practices and consumer demand for products with a smaller environmental footprint will drive product and market segmentation strategies. These trends will not only shape the way industrial minerals producers do business, but also the type of skills and people they will require to run those businesses.

Over it’s more than 100-year history, the Kennecott operation has often been at the forefront of innovation; driven by the demands of the lower grade ore-body and the higher costs of operating in the US where wages are generally higher and regulation more restrictive. One way of reducing operating costs in c/lb is to increase the lbs produced at minimal cost. Despite the relatively coarse grind at Kennecott - about 30% >150μm, approximately 20% of the Cu lost to tail is liberated chalcopyrite in the <20μm fraction, and about 30%-40% in the <37μm fraction. In 2020 Kennecott undertook a detailed plant scale test of the magnetic aggregation technology to increase copper recovery by reducing fine copper losses. A paired statistical plant test of magnetic conditioning on one rougher line showed a 1.12% increase in Cu recovery to 97% statistical confidence. The next challenge, unforeseen at the start of the project, was the fabrication and transportation to site of the equipment for the three remaining rougher rows, during the severe supply-chain constraints of the Covid pandemic in 2021. This resulted in delays and unforeseen costs as world-wide transportation became chaotic, particularly transportation via west coast USA. Nevertheless, the project was completed and commissioned, with only minor delays and cost increases, due to a flexible approach to overcoming the hurdles encountered.

The olfactory system (sense of smell) is crucial to the ability of fish to avoid predators, recognize kin, and synchronize reproduction (Baldwin et al. 2003). Copper (Cu) has been shown to impair olfaction in juvenile freshwater life stages of salmonids (including Pacific salmon and trout) in some laboratory experiments; and in the United States, public concerns have been expressed that current regulatory criteria for Cu in fresh water are not adequately protective of olfactory function in salmonids (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). These concerns have largely been raised because some Cu concentrations that have caused olfactory impairment in salmonids in the laboratory are less than Cu concentrations that have been shown to reduce salmonid survival, growth, or reproduction (the effects endpoints that are typically considered in deriving ambient water quality criteria). However, two important and interrelated points that must be considered: (1) freshwater Cu criteria are "driven" by the sensitivities of several invertebrate species that are more sensitive than the olfactory impairment threshold in salmonids when (2) the influence of water chemistry on Cu bioavailability is properly considered in deriving Cu criteria. Bioavailability refers to the ability of various chemical forms of Cu to interact with receptors on the surface(s) of organisms and thus directly cause toxicity or uptake by the organisms. The toxicity of Cu and other metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry. For example, acute Cu toxicity in fresh water generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase (Meyer et al. 2007). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recommended hardness-based freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu and other metals since the 1980s (e.g., USEPA 1985); and hardness-based metals criteria decrease (i.e., become more restrictive) as water hardness decreases. More recently, the USEPA has recommended freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu based on the biotic ligand model (BLM; USEPA 2007), which accounts for the influence of multiple water chemistry parameters, including DOC, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+, Mg2+, and several other cations and anions. The BLM-based Cu criteria generally decrease as DOC concentration, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness decrease. Because DOC has a stronger influence on Cu bioavailability than water hardness, hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria can differ considerably. For example, in water that has low DOC and high hardness, the hardness-based Cu criterion would be relatively high (because it is driven by the high hardness) but the BLM-based Cu criterion would be relatively low (because it is driven by the low DOC). Thus, any evaluation of the protectiveness of Cu criteria against a given effect, such as olfactory impairment, must properly account for the chemistry of the exposure water. Meyer et al. (2013) compiled data on Cu-induced olfactory impairment and olfactory-induced behavioral effects from tests in which BLM parameters were measured. They demonstrated that the USEPA&apos;s BLM-based freshwater life criteria for Cu are protective against olfactory impairment, because it adequately accounts for water chemistry (whereas the USEPA&apos;s hardness-based Cu criteria are not consistently protective). Olfactory impairment by Cu is now receiving increased attention in Canada and Europe (e.g., Wall 2013; Stang 2013). Accordingly, in this paper we have expanded the analysis of Meyer et al. (2013) to consider copper guidelines from various other countries and whether these guidelines are protective against olfactory impairment.

The streamline method of recovery prediction reduces a two-dimensional problem to a bundle of one-dimensional ones. This paper presents the development and application of a novel scaling technique which, when used with a streamline model, causes s bundle of one-dimensional problems to further reduce to a single one-dimensional calculation. The one-dimensional calculation accounts for chemical-rock interactions and the streamline model for areal sweep. The scaling technique significantly reduces computation time, is readily modified to desk-top calculations, and can be applied to both absorbing and reacting species. The work was sponsored by the Interior Department&apos;s Bureau of Mines.

Four methods to assess the relative flotability of fine coal have been tested: flotation with frother only, flotation with frother and collector, salt flotation, and timed-release analysis. A practical and simple criterion which combines the separation efficiency (capacity factor and kinetic rate constant (intensity factor) has been suggested. Five coal samples are chosen and tested. Based on test results, it is concluded that the flotability test with collector and frother is closer to practice, and, according to the suggested flotability criterion, coal fines can be classified into four categories of relative flotability: very easy, easy, moderate, and difficult.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), despite their small size, are stable and have a large surface area that allows for absorption and removal of ions as well as turbidity in a short period of time. Thus, the present study addressed the synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4 NPs synthesized using the co-precipitation method and evaluated their effect on the coagulation process in water treatment. The Fe3O4 NPs characteristics were evaluated as follows: magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), surface area using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), crystal phase using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). In addition, the effects of the synthetic Fe3O4 NPs on the turbidity reduction of water in various pH levels were evaluated. The synthesized Fe3O4 NPs were without any impurity in the sizes of 22–32 nm, surface area of 99.6 m2/g, pores’ mean diameter size of approximately 10.6 nm, and maximum magnetic saturation of 66.21 emu/gram (emu/g). Using 0.2 g of synthetic Fe3O4 NPs with an initial turbidity of 17 NTU and pH of 6 could reduce all water turbidity (100%). Considering the cheap and facile production and separation, as well as the possibility to reuse them and reduce the sludge water content, iron oxide Fe3O4 NPs can be effectively used for turbidity reduction in the water treatment process.

"The City of Atlanta’s Water Supply Program Tunnel project includes a 7,315-m (24,000-ft) long, 4-m (13-ft) diameter, hard rock tunnel. A complex aspect of the project involves connecting five, blind bore shafts to the tunnel in a location close to current drinking water reservoirs. During the supplemental geotechnical investigation following the initial contract award, results from additional borehole geophysics were reviewed. Unfavorably oriented fracture sets forced a change in the original pre-excavation grouting program designed for that site. Real-time grout monitoring and geophysical data were compared to provide assurance that the program, as designed, correlated with the in situ ground conditions. Following grouting, results were modeled, and all grouting data were reviewed to determine if grouting was complete.Project backgroundThe current water supply system operated by the city of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management (DWM) consists of four, aged, raw-water pipelines, one of which dates back to 1893. Based on previous assessments completed by the DWM, the entire water supply system is at, or will soon reach, its recommended useful life. As such, the city acquired the Bellwood Quarry in 2006 with the intention to create a water storage facility with a volume of approximately 9.1 billion L (2.4 billion gal) to serve approximately 1.2 million people.The project location is shown in Fig. 1, which is generally in the northwest part of downtown Atlanta, GA. The overall project has been divided into two phases. The Phase 1 project connects the quarry and the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant (HWTP), and the Phase 1 Extension project connects the HWTP to the Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant (CWTP) and the Chattahoochee River. A 7,315- m (24,000-ft) tunnel with a finished diameter of 3 m (10 ft) connects all three elements. The HWTP location is also where the city’s two most proximate drinking water reservoirs are located."

Sunshine Mining Company&apos;s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the United States, and maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and uncertain silver market, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a 2-year, $400 000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants, thereby saving the company approximately $650 000 per year.
