The flotation limit of fine particles has been re-examined based on the effect of bubble size on contact angle, and a new surface chemistry-limited relationship describing the minimum particle size which can be floated is proposed. In this analysis the critical value of bubble-solid contact radius (re) for which there is no effective attachment between particle and bubble has to be determined. The values of re determined by extrapolation of our experimental data for contact angle versus bubble-solid contact diameter permit the prediction of the flotation limit of methylated quartz particles, with fraction-al coverage of trimethylsilyl groups from 0.07 to 0.51. The limit of fine particle flotation as determined by this theoretical approach agrees well with experimental data reported in the literature.

This paper will present the design and construction of a deep underground station of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) project; the Édouard Montpetit station. The Édouard-Monpetit station is an interchange station that will connect the deeply sitting REM tracks to the existing metro station of the same name located closer to the surface. Édouard-Montpetit station is expected to be the deepest in North America, surpassing the famous Forest Glen Station. The various challenges and solutions put forth for the successful completion of this underground work are presented to serve as a valuable example for future deep excavation performed in urban area, in the close vicinity of highly sensitive structures.

INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. DEVELOPMENT The ramp access system lends itself well to conduct¬ing the several phases of development concurrently. The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

"Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Openpit mining (prestripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The openpit mines feed both a sulfide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp Inc. Peñasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals.As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine life, Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value, plant modifications, including the addition of a carbon prefloat circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery, are currently being undertaken. This carbon prefloat circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Peñasquito operation. The addition of the carbon prefloat circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado openpit to be developed.These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this article and include improvements in geomodeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."

Four massive pillar collapses in limestone mines, and one in a marble mine, occurred between 2011 and 2021 in benched areas at the Appalachian physiographic province. We characterized the rock mass at 43 limestone mines using the Geological Strength Index and, by plotting the results on a physiographic relief map, determined that GSI values between 55 and 70 preferentially occur in the Appalachian and Ouachita Mountains, which were subject to deformation during the Ouachita and Alleghanian Orogenies. Limestone mines located in formations of similar age in the Interior Plains, where deformation was less developed, are characterized by Geological Strength Index values over 80. We present the results of pillar strength calculations that incorporate the Geological Strength Index from mines that experienced massive collapse, as well as from mines with benched areas that did not collapse, to demonstrate the negative effect that a jointed rock mass has on pillar stability. We suggest that pillar designs, particularly those in which benching will be incorporated, should include allowance for rock mass quality. Because of the preferential dominance of lower GSI values in the Appalachians, we further suggest that pillar designs in this environment may require additional engineering assessment, especially where benching is intended. Lower GSI values may often translate into greater overbreak, which results in loss of pillar volume, corresponding wider back spans, and a decreased width-to-height ratio.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No.4 mine which requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place, High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 it) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610 m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 30.5 cm (12 in) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas which endanger men and equipment. To control this situation rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works towards the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition utilizing a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDFI- 15 bolting machine. Over 120 km (75 mi) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43 to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam port- ions of No.4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method employing bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people and the total drilling supply costs are approximately 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts.

With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the very fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive but it leads to greater losses in 'slimes'. In the early 1970's, 50% of the tin mined in Bolivia, 30% of the phosphate mined in Florida and 20% of the world's tungsten were lost in this way (Somasundaran, 1979). Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25-50µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Two approaches can be adopted to try to overcome this problem. The first involves increasing the efficiency of existing equipment or developing new slimes treatment processes. Gravity devices such as the Bartles-Mozley concentrator have been developed for this purpose and good recovery has been reported from 100µm down to 5µm. Such machines, however, have relatively low throughputs, so that large areas of plant space are generally required. Flotation is rapidly growing in importance for the treatment of ultra-fine minerals traditionally treated by gravity concentration.

Unfortunately, mining and mining accidents have gone hand-in-hand since man first started to extract ore from the ground. In the first published treatise on mining, De Re Metallica, Georgius Agricola (1556) stated that cold, water, dust, stagnant and foul air, roof falls, falls from ladders and demons all caused injury and death in the mines of his day. Although demons are no longer considered a cause of accidents in modern mining, the other factors remain with us still. The United States government started keeping track of fatalities with the establishment of the federal Bureau of Mines in 1910. Successor agencies, such as the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) continue to track fatalities today. Looking at the records, it can be seen that coal mine fatalities dropped from 2821 in 1910 to only 27 in 2004. The reduction in fatalities and injuries didn’t “just happen.” It took concentrated effort from the entire mining industry: miners, supervisors, safety officials, mining inspectors and mining researchers. But first, specific hazards must be identified before they can be corrected. In past, coal mining accidents have been analyzed by: type (roof fall, electrical, etc), mine attribute (location, seam height, etc.), and aspects of the mineworker (work experience, job classification, etc). Much of this research helped to direct the industry’s attention to where additional vigilance and safety training was needed. No doubt this directed effort has led, at least in part, to the decrease in coal mining fatalities. This paper takes a novel look at coal mining fatalities: it examines the risk of fatalities based on how long the mine has been open.

"A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob. INTRODUCTION During a series of stakeholder meetings, a near unanimous concern was expressed related to maintenance of effective ventilation airflow on longwall faces. There was a strong interest expressed regarding the impacts of face length and caving characteristics on the ability to maintain adequate face airflow levels. This study seeks to understand and improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations across the longwall face by assessing airflow variations in terms of roof caving characteristics and face length. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers seek to identify flow paths of ventilation airflow on longwall panels with variations in roof caving characteristics and longwall face lengths. The project research aims to develop an understanding of the role of gas dynamics in variable broken rock, interactions with ventilation airflow and methane concentrations across the longwall face area. The research also addresses continuous ventilation monitoring along the shield line to provide early detection of gas exchanges between face and gob, and thus improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations around the face. In the context of this paper, the longwall gob refers to the pillared area behind the shields. This work reports on results from one project task to conduct field based research using a tracer gas to describe face air and gob area gas movement in a bleederless longwall ventilation system that incorporated a back return."

Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

The paper describes the unique operating features of the Lebanon Concentrator Plant wherein both magnetic concentration and froth flotation are used. Chalcopyrite is selectively floated by the use of dual collectors, Aerofloats and secondary butyl xanthate. Both potassium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate (dual collectors) are dissolved and emulsified with pine oil for the flotation of the pyrite. Sketches describing the plant operations are presented and plant operating metallurgical results obtained are also given. The optimum production of minerals by the froth flotation process is normally achieved [ ] smooth operating conditions, The process, because of its many variables, becomes an art as well as a science. Therefore, any phase of the operation which will aid the operator in his control of the numerous variables will help produce a smoother operating plant, One of the most important variables which the operator deals with is the addition of reagents, These are usually costly items and should be used discretely with minimum amount of waste, The danger is that ,this emphasis may reduce the reagent amount to a point below that required, or, on the other hand an excessive amount is added, Both conditions usually yield poor results. The drea of the metallurgist is to provide the operator with the tools enabling him to produce a good mineralized froth at all times. Normally the operator has no control concerning the type of reagents which he must use. This has usually been worked out for him in the laboratory and by plant-scale tests. He does have limited authority to control the amounts of the reagents at his disposal. This, I believe, is as it should be. However, the operator should be provided with the best combination of reagents for his particular job. The providing of this combination of reagents for his particular job, The providing of this combination is often difficult, yet it is very important in order to yield good results, With this in mind, the dual collector idea was introduced for the selective flotation of chalcopyrite, and also later for the flotation of pyrite at the Concentrator Plant of the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Supplying several types of collectors has given the operator an additional effective tool, even though great variations are encountered in ore tonnage treated and in ore composition, This paper deals with the use of the dual collectors and with the addition of the reagents in the form of a pine oil emulsion, or more accurately, a pine oil suspension. It is hoped that other operators may find the ideas helpful. There does not seem, to me, to be definite scientific fact which would substantiate the necessity for the use of dual collectors. However, in actual operations, the metallurgical results at Lebanon became more uniform with the use of dual collectors, I look upon it as an "insurance policy" which greatly aids the operator during those periods when he is having trouble, One theory has been advanced, i.e. one collector has a greater tendency to float the coarser minerals, whereas the other one may float the finer ones. Consequently, a combination of the two collectors will result in optimum recoveries, There has been some evidence that this is true, but it is not conclusive, on the other hand, the use of a xanthate-pine oil suspension (or emulsion) should speed up the surface reaction of the collector with the sulfide minerals, result¬ing in more uniform flotation, This has definitely happened in our particular case. A more interesting unexplainable observation has also occurred; i.e., the xanthate solution does not appear to lose its strength as rapidly when it is in the form of an emulsion (or suspension), This was first observed when a 50 gallon drum of a 20% ethyl xanthate solution was taken to Wilmington, Delaware, for a laboratory test, using a homogenizer to produce the xanthate-pine oil emulsion. Upon arrival, the drum of xanthate had developed a considerable internal pressure, The relief of this pressure was accompanied by a strong odor, When the emulsion was returned to Lebanon for the plant test orders were issued to release the pressure prior to emptying the emulsion. Nopressure had developed within the drum and there was no unusual odor present, Since this time it has been observed that xanthate pine oil suspensions have greatly decreased the possible decomposition of the xanthate solutions. In fact, suspensions have been exposed for more than a month without apparently effecting their reactions in the flotation plant. On the other hand, we found that the regularly mixed concentrated xanthate solutions, after standing for several days, did not give the same results as the freshly made ones. This effect was greatly reduced by the use of xanthate pine oil suspension (or emulsion)

INTRODUCTION The Tokyo metropolitan region, inclusive of the three neighboring prefectures (Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama), has the highest concentration of population and industry in Japan; with an area of 13,500 km2 or only 3.6 percent of the national land, but a population of 31.8 million or 26 percent of the national total, and a Gross Regional Product (GRP) of146 trillion yen (US$1.33 trillion) or 36 percent of the overall GDP of Japan as of 1990. Tokyo Bay, embraced by the metropolitan region as shown in Figure 1 (a), (b), is open to the Pacific Ocean as a marine gateway and is ringed by large cities and coastal industrial zones together with port facilities, all constituting a concentration of prime importance for socio-economic activities. The Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway (TTB highway), which crosses Tokyo Bay and provides a direct transportation link between the west and east sides of the bay, has long been a sort of “dream-come-true” project in Japan. As shown in Figure 2, linked to the Tokyo Bay Shore Highway, Metropolitan Inter-city Expressway, Tokyo Outer Ring Road, Tateyama Express-way, and others, it will play an important role as an integral part of the regional highway network to help promote spatial redistribution and multi polarization of urban functions, thus strengthening cooperation between cities and restructuring the metropolitan region. The TTB Highway is a project of 15.1 km in length designed as a toll highway to cross the bay by tunnel and bridge, and will require ten years to complete at a total cost of more than 1,438 billion yen (US$13.077 billion). Following more than 20 years of feasibility and environmental assessment studies, construction of this giant offshore highway project commenced in May 1989 as the first large-scale highway project with private-sector participation under the prevailing Road Law in Japan, and is now steadily proceeding toward the goal of completion in fiscal1997. This report outlines the entire TTB Highway project, including the waterproofing measures against high water pressure and the rapid construction method applied in the construction of shield tunnel sections.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coal field have a heating value of approximately 8,000 Btu/lb and 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275 to 352'C) of lump coal from Usibelli Coal Mine and Beluga coal field enhanced the heating value of the coal, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 8,000 Btu/lb to nearly 12,000 Btu/lb. The product coal with high heating value and 0.2 % S is an environmentally acceptable premium fuel. The Hardgrove grindability index of the coal is greatly improved, further enhancing its value. Increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Vitrinite reflectance increased to 0.72 and vitrinite was subjected to widespread visiculation resulting in a coke like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population.

Like the Summer Olympics and U.S. presidental elections, MINExpo comes along once every four years. More than 35,000 people attended the last MINExpo and there is talk that there will be more this time.
