Sulphur deposits occur within the upper Salado and Rustler gypsum beds. The formation of a sulphur ore deposit requires large quantities of oil and /or gas, which must find a permeable pathway into the gypsum beds. The Permian beds weathered for 90 million years in an arid environment prior to the advent of a more humid climate at the beginning of the Cretaceous Period. The first Cretaceous rivers enlarged the sinkholes and caverns of the Karstified Permian terrain and deposited coarse conglomerates and sands into the subsurface gypsum beds. The resulting network of caverns and sinkholes, filled with permeable sediments, permitted the free flow of hydrocarbons through gypsum. All sinkholes and caverns infilled with Cretaceous sediments that have penetrated beds of gypsum are associated with sulphur deposits. The Castile gypsum lies directly upon the oil bearing Bell Canyon formation. Sinkholes and caverns filled with Cretaceous sediments occur in the lower Castile. Biogenic calcite and sulphur are adjacent to these sediments. However, faults assume the major role in generating the initial permeability, allowing hydrocarbons to penetrate the lower Castile gypsum. The largest faults are associated with biogenic calcite and sulphur for a distance of 250 meters up from the bottom of the Castile gypsum. It is apparent that two dynamic geological processes are generating permeability within the gypsum beds: (1) the Cretaceous sands decending with difficulty into gypsum and (2) the faults creating permeability in the lower Castile but losing energy through soft bed deformation in the overlying gypsum. Both of these sulphur ore controls are mappable, but another large sulphur deposit of the magnitude of the Culberson Sulphur Mine has yet to be discovered. THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees' productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Istanbul is the bigest metropolitan city of Turkey with more than 15 millions of population and construction activities are steadly increasing with respect to that increase in population. In this papaer petrographical, physico-mechanical properties of natural aggregate mines from west, (Tekirdag) to East, Izmit (Gebze) 'will be summarized in connection with the concrete production. However the locations suitable for aggregate production in these area as; Paleozoic aged sandstones (Ayazaga, Cendere, Mahmutbey areas), Permb-Carboniferous aged limestones (Cebeciköy area), Triassic limes tones (Ömerli-Gebze areas) and Eosen limestones (Çatalca area), Plio-Quaternary aged volcanic basalts (Tekirdag, Çorlu, Beykoz areas). Plio-quaternary aged, fine grained aggregates within sandy formations are mined in Silivri-Sinekli area, Catalca-Ormanali area, Agacli-Akpinar (Kemerburgaz area) and Sile-Karakiraz-Sahilköy areas. Sandstones mineralogically contain mainly of Quartz+Feldspar and less amount of Mica (biotite+muscovite) rich with slica content and sedimentary origined. Especially limestones are cryptocrystaline textured, unique mineral composed of calcite and secondary have Dolomite ± (Quartz+Albite). Basalts are microlitic textured and contain Olivine+Pyroxene+Plagioclase. Chemically basalts rich with Fe and Mg and also volcanic origined. Sands are fine grained natural aggregates mainly contain semiangled, rounded minerals and rock fragments. Mineralogically have Quartz + Feldspar ± pyroxene+ ambhibole ±garnet and less amount of epidote ± magnetite ± hematite. Different rocks, used in aggregates such as limestones, sandstones-sands and basalts, supply varied concrete strength because of their mineralogical composition and characteristics of textures. Moreover, Basalts (Karatepe area) are good example for the higgest concrete strength (1017-1895 sc; kg/cm2) in our study area because of their clambed mineralogical apperance such as intersertal texture. As the result of extensive field and comparative laboratuary studies, the effect of petrographic, physical, mechanical properties of the aggregates on concrete srtength is extensivelly discussed in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo. One of the principal responsibilities of the California State Geologist is to provide local governments with maps and information regarding mineral resource occurrences within their jurisdiction. The primary objective of this effort is to furnish basic data that is essential in planning for and accommodating wise development of mineral deposits that are important to the economic well-being of the region, state, and nation. Local government agencies are required by law to incorporate the information provided by the State Geologist into their general plans and formulate mineral resource management policies that emphasize conservation and development of mineral deposits. The Mineral Land Classification program was initiated by the State Geologist in 1977 under authority of the California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). To date, about 33,000 square miles of land have been classified for mineral resource potential. Most of the mineral land mapping has been conducted in three principal areas: (1) metropolitan areas of the state where urban encroachment has greatly diminished available supplies of construction aggregate; (2) Sierra Nevada foothills, a region that is undergoing dramatic population increases; and (3) the Mojave Desert and Great Basin regions, where large Federal land withdrawals are pending that could preclude mining. Mineral land classification studies address the overall mineral potential of a region through the identification of local and regional geologic factors that control or influence the formation of mineral deposits. These studies are field-intensive surveys that enable project geologists to gain first-hand knowledge about the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in a given area and portray that information accurately in map form. This paper summarizes the progress made in the Mineral Land Classification program in the metropolitan, Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Mojave Desert/Great Basin regions of California. Selected projects from each area are discussed in detail.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

Coal waste materials inhibit the direct establishment of vegetation due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss #1 coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980s with little topsoil resources available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total S = 0.38%; pH = 3.6), black in color and high (70%) in coarse fragments. The refuse also had a low water-holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0-mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the effects of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime requirements) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from <4.0 to >6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only. This was due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Applica¬tion of 27Mg ha`1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and this appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity of leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile. Therefore, long-term water-treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the City of Portland Oregon’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) to procure and compensate Impregilo-SA Healy (I/H)for the West Side Willamette River Combined Sewer Over?ow (CSO) Project. The contract method is a three-phase process consisting of qualifications based contractor procurement, pre-construction phase design assistance/construction planning, and facility construction where the contractor is compensated on a cost reimbursable-fixed fee basis. The paper focuses on pre-construction phase lessons learned from the development of the contract general conditions, establishment of a construction budget and cost control program, incorporation of contractor recommended design changes, and development of a subcontractor procurement program for construction.

Open pit mining is the strong sector of the American mining industry. In the middle of the 60&apos;s. 17-18% of the ore in metal mines was mined with underground methods. From the middle of the 60&apos;s to 1980 the production in open pit metallic mines increased from about 400 to close to 600 million short tons while at the same time the underground mine production decreased a little, from about 90 to about 80 million tons. Less than 15% of the ore prodction now come from underground mines. Large amounts of waste rock were also handled in the open pits. In the middle of the 60&apos;s about 600 milion tons were handled, in 1980 1,200 million tons were moved. This means that the average stripping ratio increased from about 1.5 to over 2.0 tons of waste rock per ton of ore, figure 1.

The Greek Cement Industry is a vital sector of our economy. With an annual production of cement over 15.5 million tonnes, it contributes significantly to the national gross domestic product (G.D.P.). The cement industry, as other mineralogical transformation process industries (lime, glass, ceramics, extractive metallurgy etc.), is high energy intensive. Each tonne of cement produced requires not only large amounts of fuels (coal, fuel oil), but additionally a significant quantity of electrical power as well. All fuels consumed by the Greek Cement Industry are imported and energy accounts for one third of the cement production cost. Therefore, it is of interest of the community and the industry to increase energy efficiency, to reduce the quantities of fuels consumed in the cement manufacturing process. It is also known that like almost all manufacturing processes, the cement industry produces large amounts of CO2 (combustion of fuels, de-carbonization of limestone and use to electricity). The utilization of wastes (principally as alternative fuels, scrap tires, spent solvents etc.) is compatible with the general principles of waste management and it is also a common practice in other European and developed countries. In the present paper the economic, social and environmental benefits provided by the recycle process of the various wastes in the Greek cement plants are extensively analyzed. From the whole work, it was concluded that such a practice: - replaces a significant percentage of imported fossil fuels in the cement manufacturing process, - maximizes the recovery of energy and also ensures their safe disposal, - produces overall environmental benefits by reducing releases to air, water and land, - prevents resource depletion of valuable non-renewable fossil fuels, - overcomes the need for the construction of dedicated incineration facilities, - contributes positively to the principles of the sustainable development.

Sulfonate promoters and collectors were originally developed as relatively inexpensive anionic collectors to selectively concentrate the iron-bearing minerals in low grade iron ores and to remove iron and other mineral contaminants by flotation in the processing of glass sands, feldspar and other ceramic raw materials. The first reagents produced were effective collectors for such iron oxide minerals as goethite, hematite, limonite, magnetite and siderite. Further development has resulted in additional reagents with a broadened application to the selective flotation of a variety of nonsulfide and nonmetallic minerals. The products in this group are anionic sulfonate-type promoters, natural petroleum sulfonates, and synthetic modified sulfonates. Beyond their applications to iron-bearing minerals, the sulfonate collectors have gained commercial use in the flotation treatment of barite, celestite, fluorite, apatite, chromite, industrial garnet, kyanite, mica, rhodochrosite and cassiterite. in addition, extensive laboratory studies indicate their potential suitability for flotation of the following minerals: Anatase Anhydrite Bauxite Beryl Calcite Chlorite Some Copper Carbonates Corundum Dolomite Hornblende Huebnerite Ilmenite Lepidolite Magnesite Phosphate Minerals Rutile Scheelite Spodumene Sillimanite Talc Tourmaline Wolframite Zircon Sulfonate promoters are water soluble or dispersible liquids, syrups or pastes of varying viscosity with colors ranging from dark blackish-brown to clear. Customarily, they are fed to the conditioner or flotation as 5% to 30% water solutions or dispersions. In addition to their normal collector activity, certain of these products display notable frothing characteristics. Improved collector efficiency and adequate froth control can frequently be obtained by employing mixtures of sulfonate reagents, of ten with results quite markedly superior to those achieved with equivalent dosages of the individual promoter alone. Reagent requirements will vary with the type of mineral being treated; however, a general overall range of 0.13 to 2.0 kg/metric ton (0.25 to 4.0 lb/ton) of feed should cover most applications.

The subsidence and deformation characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata is quite different from that with consolidated overlying strata. In this paper, based on the engineering background of large mining height mining in No.21 coal seam of Zhaogu No.2 Coal Mine in Henan Province, China, the PFC 2D numerical simulation and surface subsidence field observation was conducted to study the subsidence characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata (680m). Numerical model with dimensions of 2000m 750m was established and mining process with different working face lengths (150 m,200 m,250 m,300 m) and different working face advancing distances (40 m,80 m,120 m,160 m,200 m,240 m,280 m,320 m,360 m,400 m,440 m,480 m) were simulated. The surface subsidence characteristics and displacement field variation of rock strata under different working face advancing distances were observed and analyzed. The results show that with the advance of working face, the structure of subsidence-like basin will be formed in each rock stratum, and the influence range of mining on rock stratum is “bowl-shaped”, and the influence increases with the increase of advancing distance. The unconsolidated layer has a buffer effect on the mining-induced subsidence, and the buffer effect is realized by the expansion of the subsidence area. The movement law of strata under different working face lengths is similar to that under general mining, and the structure of subsidence-like basins will also be formed in each stratum. The influence range of strata after mining is ' bowl-shaped ', and the influence extent increases with the increasing of working face length; the internal subsidence of the unconsolidated layer is more intense and complex than that of the rock layer; the surface subsidence movement shows an obvious 'basin' phenomenon. The field observation data of surface subsidence also confirm the above results.

"1. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, many cities around the world have constructed metro tunnels to alleviate transportation pressure from rapid urbanization. In soft soil areas, metro tunnels are usually constructed by shield-tunneling method due to its high efficiency and little disturbance to environment. However, the tunnels may show significant post-construction settlement after several years of operation. Take Shanghai Metro line 2 for example, the maximum longitudinal settlement reached 160mm after ten years of operation, shown in Figure 1. When analyzing varying factors that contribute to the long-term settlement of tunnels, the effect of cyclic loading from train vibration is rarely taken into consideration for most researches only focus on the influence of leakage problems in the tunnel while neglecting train vibration induced leakage and resulting settlement. It’s true that metro tunnels from shield-tunneling method are prone to have leakage problems due to the special structural configuration. Furthermore, trains move hundreds of times inside the tunnel every day, which inevitably will cause accumulation and dissipation of excess pore pressure. When the excess pore pressure dissipates, tunnel settlement induced by train vibration occurs(Deng F H, 2007). Although researchers (Zheng et al., 2005; Wongsaroj et al., 2007; Mair, 2008; Shin et al., 2012; Zhang et al., 2012, 2015) conducted extensive numerical analysis on the relationship between tunnel settlement and relative permeability of tunnel to surrounding soil by treating tunnels as permeable media, their attention was only paid to the tunnel settlement from reduction of hydrostatic pressure in the ground, rather than from the dissipation of excess pore pressure generated by train vibration. Therefore, the influence of train vibration on the long-term settlements of metro tunnels is still not clear."

I propose to do three things today. First, take a broad look at the role of mining in the Latin American economy; then, review briefly the current situation in four principal metallic mineral exporting nations -- Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela; and. finally, raise some, policy questions that seem to me to be important. The Role Of Latin America In World Mining First, let&apos;s consider Latin America&apos;s position in world mining markets. Latin America provides more than 5% of world output in 16 metals or ores, ranging from antimony and barite to Tungsten and Zinc. Latin America supplies a fifth or more of the world&apos;s antimony, beryl, bismuth, copper, fluorspar, silver and Tellurium.

The Northern Reese River Valley is in west-central Lander County approximately 31 miles north of Austin, Nevada in the north-central Basin and Range Province (Figure 1). Authigenic zeolites, which were previously undescribed in the literature, are voluminous in this small sedimentary basin. Uranium mineralization is also abundant in this study area. Until now, what we believe to be cause and effect have not been put together. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy reveal clinoptilolite, erionite, analcime, and minor chabazite to be present (Figures 2, 3). Assays show uranium to be present in thicknesses up to 0.7 meters at amounts up to 0.10% eU308. The sediments in the Northern Reese River Valley belong to the Mio-Pliocene Humboldt Formation equivalents. This formation consists largely of tuffacious lacustrine and fluviatile sedimentary rocks. Mudstone is the dominant lithology and intercalated thin zeolite strata (usually less than 0.6 meter thick) are present. Zeolites in the Northern Reese River Valley were diagenetically derived from rhyolitic glass deposited in a shallow, saline-alkaline lake under arid to semi-arid conditions. Clinoptilolite from the study area was K-Ar dated at approximately 4.7 + 0.5 million years which corresponds to Middle Pliocene age (Krueger and Basinski, in press). This age is further substantiated by Middle Pliocene mammalian fauna collected in the vicinity by Deffeyes (1).

The physical relief is a variable of utmost significance in the course of the analysis, evaluation, design and management of the visual environment. In this sense, there are cases where it would be desirable to isolate the relief from the other elements making up the visual environment and to investigate its visual value separately. Such cases include the technical works that cause major and permanent alterations to the relief, as well as the works, of which the spatial arrangement depends on the morphology of the ground. Slopes, distances, hypsometric difference values, viewsheds are elements of the relief that affect the visual value of a landscape, but also the ability of a particular landscape to accept and absorb new activities. This paper describes an evaluation and prediction model of the visual value of the landforms. A questionnaire survey takes place in order to investigate the public preference, using a sample of 221 persons in the broader area of Athens. The means used to demonstrate the various forms of reliefs are 32 perspective digital relief images. Following this and in order to investigate the elements of the relief that affect its visual value, 20 quantitative indices were developed and examined so as to select the best ones. Linear prediction models of the visual value were investigated from the previous elements, through a regression process. The applications of the proposed model in physical environment planning are many, such as the prediction of visual impact by arranging works that alter the relief of a region, as it happens in mining, metallurgical and waste disposal sites.

For many years drilling and blasting has been considered more of an art than a science. This is still true in some respects, but today scientific approaches to drilling and blasting design must be used to plan an efficient operation which achieves desired fragmentation within constraints. These constraints involve minimizing damage to the wall or nearby permanent structures and avoiding undesirable fragmentation and mine dilution which can adversely affect operation costs. The degree of fragmentation by blasting is the most important single factor in any attempt to optimize the overall cost of the mining operations. The mining cycle begins with the drilling and blasting operations, which result in a given blasted rock size distribution. While this operation represents only about 20% of total mining costs, the efficiency and costs of the subsequent operations are strongly dependent on the fragment distribution obtained.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.&apos;s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. INTRODUCTION The County of Cornwall is situated in the South Western extremity of England, see Fig. 1, and has for hundreds of years been an historical centre of mining activity. In the last century many thousands of Cornish miners emigrated to Canada, U.S.A., Australia and numerous other countries throughout the world to form the nucleii of mining industries in those lands. At present there are four active underground mines within the county, all mining tin, together with a relatively large china clay industry. All the operations are directly or indirectly associated with the three main granite intrusions, namely the Land&apos;s End Granite, the Carnmenellis Granite and the Bodmin Moor Granite. The report which follows relates to two mines, owned by the South Crafty Group of Companies, namely the South Crofty Mine itself and its smaller subsidiary, Wheal Pendarves. Both these mines are adjacent to the Carn Brea Granite ridge, see Fig. 2, which is an off-shoot of the main Carnmenellis Granite mass. The Carn Brea Granite has provided one of the most intensive areas of copper and tin mineralisation anywhere in the world. Many of the mines worked during the last two centuries and the early part of this century were situated close to the metamorphic aureole surrounding the granite intrusion. Both South Crofty and Wheal Pendarves have their shafts collared in the overlying slate, locally known as killas, but the major part of their workings are in the granite beneath. The ore bodies, or lodes, of both mines are generally steeply dipping and approximately one to four metres in width. They have been, and continue to be, worked by either back or under-hand stoping with the major level interval being approximately 37 metres. A feature of both stoping systems is that they require no back filling and in many cases the completed working areas have remained open for many years due to the competent wall rock conditions. The stoping operation necessitates having box-holes or draw points at regular intervals along the strike length at 4 to 7 metres centres; thus a stope some 50 metres long may typically have ten box-holes or draw points through which air can percolate into the empty stopes above. The granite country rock contains traces of uranium minerals, namely pitchblende or uraninite, and it is the decay of this uranium mineral which leads to the formation of the mobile radon gas which, together with its short lived daughters, may create a hazard. The presence of uranium minerals has long been known, but the quantities being so minute, it was not appreciated until some ten to fifteen years ago that these might present a hazard. The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate approached Management approximately ten years ago with a view to taking samples in areas of the mine that they felt might contain the highest concentrations of radon. Samples were thus taken in several areas of both mines, normally well away from working areas and where there was no through ventilation. The results of these initial tests were published by the National Radiological Protection Board in a paper entitled "Radon and Its Daughters in Various British Mines". The results of the initial surveys made it apparent that improved ventilation was the most important factor in reducing radon daughter concentrations within the mine atmosphere, with increased flow rates having three beneficial functions, viz. (1) To dilute radon daughter concentrations. (2) To prevent radon and its daughters reaching a state of equilibrium. It is not uncommon for radon and its daughters to have a disequilibrium factor of 1,000 in some uranium mines.
