Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. "In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Part of the results presented in this paper, were derived by the second author as part of his Master of Science thesis in Technical University of Graz."

The American Coal Ash Association, Inc. (ACAA) is an organization of producers and marketers of coal combustion byproducts. Since 1968, the goal of ACAA has been to gain recognition and acceptance of ccbs as an engineering material on par with competing virgin, processed and manufactured materials by advancing ccb uses that are technically sound, commercially competitive and environmentally safe. The use of ccbs is affected by local and regional factors including production rates, processing and handling costs, transportation costs, availability of competing materials, seasonal adjustments, and the experience of materials specifiers, design engineers, purchasing agents, contractors, legislators, regulators, and other professionals. An annual, survey of coal-burning electric utilities is conducted by ACAA to determine the quantities of ccbs produced and used in the USA. In 1993 approximately 88.5 million tons of ccbs were produced in the form of fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag and byproduct from flue gas desulfurization (FGD). Approximately twenty-two percent of the combined production of these byproducts was used, while the remaining portion was deposited in disposal areas. The major markets for ccbs include cement and concrete products, structural fills, road-base layers, mineral filler in asphalt, grit for snow and ice control, blasting grit and roofing granules, grouting, coal mining applications, and waste solidification and stabilization.

This report and accompanying engineering geologic map describe the generalized engineering geology of St. Louis County, Missouri for use in determining the most efficient, economical, and environmentally sound program for land development and urban growth. It includes an evaluation of such factors as the physical and engineering properties of soil and bedrock, surface stability, and subsurface geologic structure. The map and text are designed primarily for property owners, engineers, architects, real estate developers, and city planners involved in land-use planning. The geologic information and engineering interpretation must be considered as a general guide and not as a substitute for a complete on site investigation prior to initiation of any land-use project. The map scale, 1:63,360 (1 inch to a mile) is too small to include the detailed information normally provided on the 7 1/2-minute quadrangle series (1:24,000). The smaller scale is most useful at regional planning levels and was chosen to present information on the more significant engineering factors of the geologic environment for county-wide planning and development. A conventional geologic map deals primarily with the distribution and variation of bedrock formations, and a pedologic map presents information on the soil or natural medium for plant growth. Basic geologic maps and pedological maps are valuable tools that can be of assistance in studying the geologic environment, however, these maps do not provide all the information required for land-use planning. The engineering geologic maps are designed to provide this data. The engineering geologic map is related to both of these basic maps but emphasizes the engineering properties of the rock formations and soils rather than their age or origin. Some of the unit boundaries shown on the county map will closely follow some geologic formation and/or pedologic boundaries; others will transgress these conventional boundaries. Earth materials, bedrock and soil, that have similar engineering characteristics have been mapped as one unit without regard to their geologic or pedologic classifications. This is to assure that geological factors are recognized, adequately interpreted, and presented for use in engineering practice.

The concept and operation of novel shaft sinking systems utilizing roadheader-type cutter booms, including mucking, conveying, and hoisting installations, are described. Selection criteria, performance data, and economic considerations for various shaft excavators are presented. Various applications of this low-cost and flexible system for civil engineering and mining projects will be discussed. The cutter booms can work in both soft ground and competent rock. Furthermore, the novel excavator can operate in ground stabilized by grouting, cementing, and freezing. The flexible cutting system can be used both for excavation of shafts, foundation pits, slopes, and for tunneling (drifting).

Bound water plays an important role in the processing and utilization of numerous materials and mineral processing systems. The fundamental nature of this near surface bound (vicinal) water is yet to be understood in its complete detail. The objective of this paper is to use dielectric measurements to characterize the bound water near hydrophobic and hydrophilic oxide surfaces. It is anticipated that a combination of dielectric property measurements and characteristic relaxation times will allow for more effective analysis of the interfacial water.

Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal slurry taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

Utility coal specifications usually contain a requirement for a maximum moisture content in order to prevent coal handling problems and to minimize evaporative losses in the boiler. As most coal cleaning processes are water-based, dewatering and sometimes thermal drying steps are required to meet moisture specifications. Screens are often used for dewatering, with centrifuges and filters used to further reduce moisture in many cases. Algorithms to predict the performance of commercial dewatering devices were developed for the Coal Cleaning Simulator running under Aspen Plus? during a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. These algorithms include calculations for size degradation in the devices and fines loss to effluents, where appropriate, and a calculation for moisture content of the product based on particle size and specific gravity distribution. This paper discusses the algorithm for coarse and fine coal centrifuges and gives comparisons between predicted moisture and solids loss and published moisture and solids loss values for various particle size ranges.

The SME Research Council assists SME and its constituencies in establishing research directions that will benefit the mining industry and its professions. It also provides information about these directions to its membership, to government and to related industrial societies. The 1995 Research Forum, organized and chaired by George Luxbacher, was the second in a series of meetings organized to develop these directions. A copy of the full proceedings is available from SME for $12 plus postage and handling. The first research forum (Saperstein, L., 1993, "Technology for the Future, MINING ENGINEERING, Vol. 45, No 11, November, pp. 1382-85) invited mining industry representatives to discuss the unsolved technical problems that were keeping the industry from greater economic and environmental efficiency. The second forum asked academic researchers to discuss the same general topics from their perspective. It came as no surprise that, in general, the two sets of presenters tackled the same problems. There was no surprise when the academics spoke of the need for fundamental long-term research. What may have been surprising was the number of university people who spoke for near-term research that leads to measurable economic returns or savings. The closure of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has changed the objectives and attitudes of the SME Research Council. From being a point of liaison between SME and USBM - a conduit of items from each party to the other the council is now much more on its own. This isolation presents opportunities and hazards. The opportunities are exciting because the council could be the focus for mineral industry research policy if it were properly structured. The hazard is obvious - if there is no bureau, it could be argued, why maintain the council? Many people believe that SME should take the first course and become the beacon for research policy. More than ever, money is being spent on minerals industry research by the federal and state governments - particularly at the mineral-oriented land-grant universities - by industry and by consortia among these groups. SME could be at the hub of these programs. There is a general concern that industry is less able to maintain an economic edge by means of geologic discovery. According to Titley, there will be fewer major, new world-class discoveries except, possibly, at the continental and tectonic-plate margins. Consequently, economic advantage will go to those companies and nations that stay ahead technologically. Given the inevitable diffusion of technology, it can be concluded that technology development, underpinned by research, must be continuous to maintain profits. This is a change from earlier years when change would occur in relatively rare major steps that were interspersed with extended periods of technological equilibrium. Over the fiscal years 1994 to 1997, there has been a 24% cut in research spending by the Department of the Interior (figures from the American Association for the Advancement of Science). This is the largest budgeted percentage cut in research funding of any federal department. Even so, there is still a substantial amount of federal research funding expended in the mineral and extractive-energy industries. The US Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, Departments of Defense and Energy and others expend substantial funds on minerals industry research. Industry - producers and manufacturers - is also spending large sums on research and research-like activities. This activity argues that there is a role for SME's Research Council. Providing focus Consortia. The closure of USBM has resulted in the migration of expertise to consulting firms and to other entreprenrutisl research entities. Many of these groups are creating ad hoc consortia among themselves, nearby universities and industrial partners. The Research Council is well placed to provide an open forum for these con¬sortia. Presentations of research results, as went on in the annual meetings of the Generic Mineral Technology Centers, can help to establish an. archive of results and an avoidance of duplication of research. A continuing sense of research directions can evolve. National Science Foundation. No discussion of consortia would be complete without mention. of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) programs for Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRC) and Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI). NSF is aware of the gap in federal support of science and technology caused by USBM's closure.

Iron ore is essential in steelmaking but high-grade ores have diminished, making it necessary to turn to low-grade ores, which need further beneficiation to upgrade the iron content. Biobeneficiation techniques such as bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation have proven successful in iron ore processing. Consequently, these methods have emerged as sustainable alternatives to conventional beneficiation. The biobeneficiation processes occur in mild conditions using bioreagents and biosurfactants derived from microbes, and offer a reduction of chemicals used in processing. This potentially offers methods that are relatively energy efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly while tackling the constraints of dwindling high-grade iron ore resources.

The folded Appalachians are a physiographic province of eastern North America extending from Nova Scotia to Alabama. The province strikes through the state of Pennsylvania (see Fig. 1) comprising roughly 20 percent of the state and it is here that the focus of this paper will attend. The province is a thick sedimentary sequence which was compressed into a folded mountain belt by the Appalachian Orogeny which terminated at the end of the Permian. The stratigraphy contains both carbonate and non-carbonate rocks as a reflection of the depositional environment at any specific time and place during the Paleozoic geosynclinal accumulation. Although a great deal of variety and difference exists in the geology from one end to another, a common thread of structural and stratigraphic style exists. Carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, comprise a substantial percentage of the total Appalachian stratigraphy and are interbedded with clastic materials such as sandstones, siltstones, and shales. The carbonate rocks are extensively mined and collectively represent a vast economic resource.

"INTRODUCTION A positive workplace environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture affords organizations and corporations many benefits, including increased trust and employee morale, sustainable EHS performance improvements, and reliable productivity and profit margin growth. Unfortunately, many leaders and EHS professionals struggle daily to achieve and maintain positive workplace cultures and consistent business results. While lack of management support, corporate or employee buy-in, resources, and time are common factors that conflict with an EHS culture and safe work behaviors and processes, there are many other actions that threaten the positive attributes of an organization’s culture. Often these culture killers are not recognized, or worse yet, ignored because they are considered taboo. For example, voicing observations or questioning long-held management practices or process that were initially designed to promote EHS values, but no longer do so. Unfortunately, this could be viewed as challenging authority, not being a team player or even not valuing EHS. And for those that speak up, the potential for negative consequences can be real impediments to positive change. Having an open mind, constantly striving to identify culture killers, and putting forth the effort to eliminate them are the first steps to begin reaping the benefits of having a sound workplace culture. This paper helps readers to: • Recognize culture killers that negatively impact fostering and maintaining sustainable EHS cultures in the workplace. • Understand how to prevent, avoid, and respond to culture killers, before they wreak havoc in your organization. • Assess EHS culture strength, and implement plans to continuously improve it. The desire to draw boundaries around concepts, put things into boxes, and nail down requirements for something that is virtually impossible to solidify for any length of time is quite fascinating! These desires can pose challenges when trying to define what the perfect EHS culture should look like. The very act of trying to define our culture tends to create silos, and these silos, in turn, can become “culture killers”. The following is one of the most common culture killers. UNBALANCED ORGANIZATIONS TRIGGER CULTURE KILLERS Unbalanced organizations occur when an organization’s constantly shifting focus forces other important needs to take a back seat--until the focus changes again. This balancing act can be detrimental and lead to catastrophic results including low morale, lack of trust, employee dissatisfaction, high turnover, increased incidents, poor profit margins, loss of market share, and ultimately into organization-wide failure."

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming a more commonly used tool for resource estimation as they provide not only a database management platform, but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. Interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at several locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bruce mine of Cyprus Mines Corp. is located in Bagdad, AZ. The mining method used is open cut-and-fill. Of the annual production of 81 647 t (90,000 st), approximately 83% is taken from load-haul-dump (LHD) stopes and the balance from slusher stopes. All ore is produced from the area between the 1250 level and the 2300 level. The average travel time from the shaft pocket to the stope is approximately 5 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The Bruce ore body occurs in quartz-sericite schist with Dick rhyolite on the footwall and andesite on the hanging wall. Diabase dikes are found in the hanging wall; there is also a dike coming off the footwall and crosscutting the ore body. All of the rock types are of the Precambrian Yavapai series and have been subjected to regional metamorphism. A composite of the ore body is given in Fig. 1. The deposit is of massive sulfides occurring as a steeply dipping replacement body. On the upper levels the ore is veinlike with widths from 0.6 to 4.6 m (2 to 15 ft), dipping at 1.4 to 1.5 rad (80° to 85°). On the lower levels the ore is dipping from I to 1.2 rad (60° to 70°) with widths from 3 to 16.8 m (10 to 55 ft). The strike length varies between 107 to 183 m (350 to 600 ft). The rhyolite footwall generally has a knife-edge contact with the massive sulfides. The exceptions to this are the upper levels where there is a 1.5 to 3 m (5 to 10 ft) band of silicified sericite schist between the sulfides and the rhyolite. In the southern part of the ore body the hanging wall is tuffaceous andesite and andesite. In this area the contact is generally sharp and easy to follow. However, to the north there is a large chlorite schist zone that crosscuts the bedding and comes in contact with the massive sulfides. This is apparently due to hydrothermal alteration of the andesite. The chlorite schist is highly mineralized with chalcopyrite and pyrite and quite often forms economic pockets of ore. In the massive sulfides the chief ore minerals are sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Pyrite is the predominant sulfide with considerable pyrrhotite throughout. Bright arsenopyrite ouhedrons in fine grain massive sulfides are quite common. Occasionally small amounts of galena are seen, usually near the foot or hanging wall contacts. On rare occasions tennanite is associated with massive arsenopyrite. Minor amounts of quartz, calcite, and un¬replaced remnants of sericite schist occur, but essentially pyrite is the gangue in which the ore minerals occur. The ore values are in excess of 3.5% copper and 12.5% zinc with some silver and rare gold as byproducts. Ground Conditions The massive sulfides are generally self-supporting. One exception is in the 1850 stope where the ore body is 9 to 11 m (30 to 55 ft) wide and 152 m (500 ft) long. There are flat to shallow dipping slips and seams in the ore, creating extremely blocky ground. For support, old 25.4-mm (1-in.) hoist ropes were installed tensioned to 27 t (30 st), and then cement grouted over the entire length in longholes [14 to 15 in (40 to 50 ft) in length) drilled on 3-m (10-ft) centers from the level above. This has tied the formation together very successfully and virtually eliminated the blocky ground condition. Both the hanging wall and footwall are quite shaley in some areas. Reasons for Adopting Trackless Open Cut-and-Fill Methods First, any method other than open cut-and-fill would have caused too much dilution. The use of rubber-tired mining equipment in the pro¬duction stopes requires a footwall ramp. The inclines in ore will be mined out, so this ramp in the footwall will provide access to and from the stopes (Fig. 2). This incline is very expensive, but necessary to convert existing stopes to LHD mining. 'The final cost of ore mined by the LHD machines has not been determined. As of 1972, tons per manshift in the 2150 stope-the only one to complete a full cut-had increased from 7.58 t (8.36 st) to 12.83 t (14.14

Cu isotope fractionation in low temperature aqueous environments has been well documented. Here we apply Cu isotopes to two distinct, yet related mining problems. First, an exploration geological application where we measured copper isotope fractionation in oxidized leach caps, chalcocite enrichment blankets and hypogene mineralization in 4 porphyry copper deposits located in South western USA. Cu isotope patterns exist in the lateral and vertical distribution within the mines coupled with distinct relationships with Cu grade. Second, a hydrometallurgical application where we measured the leach fluids, feed and residues from a quick leach text of Cañariaco ores. The results indicate the relative proportions of the minerals providing Cu during leaching. Interpretations of the QLT test measurements indicate covellite is the dominant ore mineral providing Cu during leaching. Both applications clearly demonstrate the power and ability of using the Cu isotope technique to understand low temperature aqueous processed involving copper.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

Big data is generated from both surface and underground mining operations. Such data contain a wealth of information concerning safety and health in the workplace and production parameters. This paper will discuss the progress towards developing an accurate forecasting model for methane gas concentration based on the analysis of data collected from Atmospheric Monitoring Systems in underground coal mines employing time series models. Several procedures need to be applied to raw data, such as data cleaning and filtering for outlier removal, data homogenization and segmentation, and exploratory statistical analysis. The data analyzed were retrieved from two coal operations in the Eastern US. A negative correlation between barometric pressure and methane gas concentration was established, at least for certain data segments. Such correlations raise the possibility that barometric pressure data can predict variations of gas concentration in the mine. The datasets will be further investigated to establish the robustness of barometric pressure and gas concentration correlation and explore the dependence of gas concentration on other factors related to mine design and operations

We will bet you that, without prior programming within 10 minutes, we can design and simulate a 10,000 unit operation separation circuit. We will even do it at your place. We do it all the time. [ ] There are no tricks; we do it in a spreadsheet. We do it in those user friendly spreadsheet such as Quattro Pro. Spreadsheets must be user friendly. Accountants use them as do managers, business men, lawyers, doctors and salesmen. What these users seldom realize, is how powerful a mathematical tool a spreadsheet is. Among their other capabilities, spreadsheets can do a finite element analysis. That is why they are useful for accounting. That is also why they are more useful to engineers in the mineral industry. Spreadsheets are ideally suited for the engineering problems in the mineral industry. We have used then for solving problems in: a) mine ventilation; b) circuit design and optimization of dense media, flotation and sizing; c) comminution circuit design; d) shaking tables; e) Humphrey spirals; f) sluice ways and channel flow; g) lock particle and liberation problems; h) tunnel and shaft stress problems; i) cascadograph simulation; j) complex heat transfer problems; k) flow in porous media; and sheet flotation (Figure 1). Mineral industry problems presented on or with a spreadsheet are an excellent teaching instrument, problem statement and solution tools and sales devices. Spreadsheets answer easily, quickly and reliably many mineral industry engineering problems. What makes spreadsheets so useful to the mineral industry. The short answer is: they are easy to use; mineral industry problems fit the spreadsheet format. Those reasons are part of the answer. The real answer lies with the structure of the spreadsheet itself. Essentially, a spreadsheet is a "finite element analysis" form of computer software. Many mineral industry problems are readily solved by finite element analysis techniques. While some in the mineral industry may think they have never heard of finite element analysis, most use it weekly if not daily. Any profit and loss statement is essentially a finite element instrument. In fact, any array of numbers where one number is related to another may be construed as a finite element analysis product. Finite element analysis is a common daily activity. To get an appreciation of a finite element analysis, think of a monthly sales forecast for the next year. For each product and for each month, there exists a dollar figure for the forecasted amount of sales. In the forecast statement, for a given product in a given month, there is a "box" where the forecasted figure is presented. The forecast figure in that box was arrived at through some type of formula. The formula probably required some information from other neighboring boxes in the master forecast statement. Voila, one has a finite element analysis. Today the analysis would be done in a spreadsheet. A typical mineral industry problem is ventilation in an underground mine. Think of a rectangular room and pillar mining operation. Each room has air entering at a given pressure and velocity and air leaving at another pressure and velocity. During steady state, the air entering and leaving the room is determined by conditions in the adjacent rooms. One can readily model the room and pillar mine layout in a spreadsheet, and then find the flow in and out of each room at steady state. The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles) northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit is owned by First Miss Gold Inc. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 m (1 400 ft.) to 671 m (2 200 ft.), along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate within the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.
