A wide variety of materials have satisfactory to superior insulating properties and can be used to control the flow of heat, provide energy savings, improve personal comfort and contribute to personal safety. Such materials range from completely organic products--both of natural origin and synthetics--to completely inorganic. In many cases, thermal protective systems are actually combinations of both. Obviously, those insulating materials which are principally inorganic have the inherent advantages of low to minimal combustibility as well as utility at vastly elevated temperatures. Both of these properties are highly desirable in providing not only thermal energy conservation, but also personal safety in residential and commercial applications. As the thermal insulation needs of man and industry have developed, there has been an ever-increasing demand on the minerals industry to provide the resources required to fill these needs. On a global scale, industrial minerals have become the fundamental base upon which today's thermal insulation industry has been built. The use of minerals to control heat flow range from the most unsophisticated applications to those requiring the ultimate in scientific technology. In many cases the minerals are themselves converted in- to the major insulating media; for example, fiber glass, rock wool or refractory fiber. In other cases, minerals are used as the chemical reactants to form the binder matrix which in turn provides the product strength required for adequate handling and installation; for example, calcium silicate bonded products wherein the binder is the reaction product of lime and silica. In still other cases, low density mineral products are added to a high density binder System to provide lower weight and better insulating properties; for example, the use of expanded perlite in concrete.

The U.S. Geological Survey has developed mathematical-modeling techniques to assess potential impacts on the hydrologic system resulting from mining of coal and oil shale in northwestern Colorado. Potential impacts of oil-shale mining on ground-water hydrology have been simulated using a quasi-three- dimensional finite-difference model. The model has been used to simulate hypothetical mine-dewatering operations at two proposed oil-shale mines. Dissolved-solids distribution and solute transport were simulated with a three- dimensional finite-difference model that was used to evaluate the effects of flooding in hypothetical abandoned mines. The potential impacts of coal and oil-shale mining on watersheds were investigated using a digital watershed model. This deterministic physical- process model predicts responses of the hydrologic system to modifications resulting from mining in basins having snow as the major source of runoff and recharge. Potential impacts of coal development on surface-water quality were investigated using a river-quality assessment model.

INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. 9.1 INTRODUCTION There are approximately 70,000 abandoned coal mines nation¬wide, which is about 35 times the number of underground coal mines presently operating. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that there are over 8 million acres of undermined land due to the extraction of coal, metals, and nonmetals. Subsidence has affected more than 2 million acres, and more than 99% of the subsidence is related to underground coal mining. There is reason to believe that some of the remaining 6 million acres of the undermined land have a high potential to subside. The expansion of housing, highways, commercial structures, and other facilities has required the use of many areas that are underlain by abandoned coal mines, and this growth will continue. Many subsidence problems are derived from the collapse of aban¬doned underground coal mines. There are numerous abandoned mine workings in the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylva¬nia, in the Appalachian bituminous fields, the Illinois Basin, the Rock Springs, Wyoming area, and other areas of the United States (Gray et al., 1976). Various room and pillar patterns of mining have been used in the dipping anthracite seams and the nearly flat-lying bituminous seams with considerable variation in the per¬centage of coal extracted. The progressive deterioration of pillars, mine floors, and mine roofs after long exposure to air and water may later result in the collapse of strata over the mine entries, the crushing of the remaining coal pillars, or the bearing failure of the mine floor beneath the coal pillars. Subsidence then results as the collapse reaches the ground surface in the form of differential strains, depressions, cracking of the ground, and sinkhole devel¬opment. Subsidence over active longwall mines, which occurs concurrently with mining or is completed within a short period following coal extraction, has been studied extensively over the past decade. On the other hand, subsidence over abandoned coal mines receives little attention by the researchers, mainly because it is difficult to predict and takes place decades after mining has ceased. The techniques of investigating the subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are similar to those employed for active mines except that at the outset, it is necessary to determine whether or not the subsidence events are mining-related (Chugh et al., 1986; Cummings and Singh, 1986; Peng and Hsiung, 1986). This calls for the identification and confirmation of abandoned mine workings under or near the affected surface structures. Gen¬erally old mine maps, if available, are acquired, the surface bore¬holes are drilled for confirmation of the accuracy of the mine maps and determination of the potential for continued subsidence. Sub¬sidence monuments are established and periodic surveys con¬ducted to determine the amount and trends of surface movement in and around the affected surface structures; surface boreholes are used to investigate the integrity of the underground structures (i.e., roof, coal pillars, and floor) by TV camera. They are also used for monitoring the vertical and horizontal movements of the subsur¬face strata by Sondex (FPBX) and inclinometer (PFBI), respec¬tively, for determining the continuity of the subsidence events. Tape extensometers, crackmeters, etc., are used to monitor the development trends of major cracks in the structures or on the ground. These data are used to identify the causes of the subsidence events. Finally, abatement methods are selected to stabilize the structures. It must be noted that most subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are reported after the fact, and investiga¬tions are begun some time after reporting, that the subsequent measured movements are generally much smaller than that at¬tained in the active mines, and that due to lack of knowledge about the damage conditions and the exact location of the abandoned mine workings with respect to the affected surface structures, the precise causes of surface subsidence or surface structural damages are in most cases very difficult to identify. 9.2 TYPES OF SURFACE SUBSIDENCE According to Gray et al. (1977), after examining 354 incidents of subsidence above abandoned mines in the Pittsburgh metropol¬itan area, the subsidence features have a mean diameter (i.e. the average of long and short dimensions) from less than 1 ft to 1600 ft, with 84% less than or equal to 15 ft; the subsidence features have a depth ranging from less than 1 ft to 48 ft, with 89% less than 25 ft; 66% of the subsidence features are deeper than they are broad. Nearly 59% of the subsidence features occur with overbur¬den less than 50 ft thick and 81% less than 100 ft thick. No subsidence features occur with overburden thicker than 450 ft (Fig. 9.1). Occurrence of subsidence incidents varies from imme¬diately to more than 100 years after mining (Fig. 9.2). In analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chim¬ney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range, Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) examined historical aerial photographs on 4- to 14-year intervals between 1937 and 1967 and found that the majority of observable surface subsidence features occurred within 30 to 40 years after mining. According to Gray et al. (1977), the most prevalent subsi¬dence features over abandoned mined land are sinkholes, with depths of more than 3 ft, and troughs or sags, usually less than 3 ft deep. Sinkholes are steep-sided pits, while troughs are shallow depressions much wider in area than sinkholes. A. SINKHOLE SUBSIDENCE A sinkhole is caused by the collapse of a mine roof that works its way upward. If it is not arrested during the process it will eventually reach the surface and emerge as a sinkhole. The process is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine openings. Sinkholes are usually 3 to 20 ft deep and may be 2 to 40 ft in diameter, although most are fewer than 16 ft across (Gray et al., 1977; DuMontelle and Bauer, 1983). Newly formed sinkholes have steep sides with straight or bell-shaped walls. At times, they appear to be conical in profile with the apex upward. If the topsoil collapses, the top portion will widen to form an hour-glass shape. Sinkhole subsidence usually occurs over abandoned mines less than 165 ft deep (Hunt, 1979). Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) found that chimney sink¬holes are likely to occur when the ratio of overburden thickness to mining height (h/m) is less than 4 to 5. When h/m is between 5 and 10 to 11, the potential occurrence of chimney sinkholes decreases rapidly. When h/m is more than 10 to 11, less than 10% of the mine openings that collapse will induce sinkholes on the surface.

The employment of continuous rotary vacuum disc filters to filter refuse from the fine coal washing circuits has been increasing as it has become more important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper will discuss our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disc rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake. Our test work has shown that the continuous filtration dry cake rates for fine coal refuse correlates very well with the data developed and presented by Silverblatt and Dahlstrom1 except that the curves have moved up the scale by use of polymer flocculant additions. These polymers were not available at that writing. Finally, our tests also confirmed the general premise stated by S. K. Mishra2 that controlled additions of polymer flocculants will reduce filter refuse cake moistures somewhat.

The Morenci/Metcalf porphyry copper mining operation, located in southeastern Arizona, currently processes approximately 100,000 tons of ore per day and has copper ore reserves estimated to be in excess of one billion tons. Functional groups within the Geology Depart¬ment (currently staffed with six professional and two support personnel) include mine geology, project geology, and hydrogeology. The primary task of mine geologists is daily preblast bench face mapping with grade and mill amenability estimates. Auxiliary duties include detailed in-pit metal distribution evaluation, mineragraphic work and flux quarry geology. Project geologists conduct explora¬tion and preliminary development projects both within and outside the Morenci district and provide support to ore reserve block modeling and geotechnical work performed by the Morenci mine engineering group. Hydrogeologists handle exploration for and development of groundwater' resources and groundwater flow modeling, mine dump leach solution penetration and recovery evaluation, and tailing dam water reclamation.

Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement in coal-fired boiler design that offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling which can, in turn, increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. This report discusses, in general, AFBC technology and, in particular, progress at the 20-MW Pilot Plant built by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) at its Shawnee Power Station near Paducah, Kentucky.

A statistically-designed exper¬mental study showed how gangue minerals, flux additions, fineness of grind, firing temperature and time affect the properties of acid pellets made from a Western Australian hematite ore. Alumina has less effect than silica and lime, but various interactions between the six variables occur, which influence abrasion index, reducibility and cold compression strength. Finer grinding has little influence on reducibility but improves the other two properties. The major variable is firing temperature. It interacts with all other variables in its effects on pellet properties. Calculations based on the data show the implications for straight-grate pellet plants and optimum hood temperature range.

Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. Discussion by N. Standish and P.N. Standish Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage-"the bottom line evaluator." Correct. Theory Definitions Coal bulk density is the ratio of the mass of a collection of discrete particles to the volume that it occupies (ASA, 1980). There can be no possible argument about this definition. Mass and volume are readily measured both in laboratory and large scale installations. So, to obtain the bulk density, one simply divides the measured mass by the measured volume. It is here that we come unstuck as everybody who has ever had to reconcile book values with the measured stock tonnages knows. Where does the problem originate? Almost invariably in a too casual a reading of the above definition and the words "a collection of discrete particles." The word collection means "a number of objects collected or gathered together, viewed as a whole" (The Oxford English Dictionary, 1989). Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. "The Jurassic coal fields which lay in west China are the major energy base and contain half of coal resources in China. Due to the gather and degeneration rules, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal is distinguished with permo-carboniferous coal, which needs to be studied deeply. Programmed heating experiments of five Jurassic coal samples and three permo-carboniferous coal samples from different primal coal fields in West China were conducted to identify the characteristic parameters in the low temperature stage of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. The experiments were carried out under non-isothermal heating conditions up to 180? at the heating rate of 0.33?/min in an air atmosphere. The result showed that oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity of all coal samples increased with the rising of the temperature, which of the Jurassic coal was higher than that of Permian-carboniferous coal. The C2H4 gas of Jurassic coal generated earlier, more than that of Permian-carboniferous coal in the process of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. It indicated that the Jurassic coal was easier to be oxidized and spontaneous combustion and the index parameters of spontaneous combustion were different between the Jurassic coal and permo-carboniferous coal.INTRODUCTION Coal was the foundation of industry development, and occupied 70% of primary energy production and consumption structure in China. According to the data of the 3rd coalfield prediction, 39.6% of the total coal resources were located in northwest Jurassic coal field in China [1], where the quality of coal was excellent. The study of northwest Jurassic coal already dated from the 80s of the 20th century, about coal rock composition, coal metamorphism [2], coal-derived hydrocarbons, coal structure [3], etc. The results of these studies showed that the composition and properties of Jurassic coal was obviously different from Permian-carboniferous coal, as well as the characteristic of spontaneous combustion [4]. As a result, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal particularly needed to be studied. Now more and more methods could be conducted to test the characteristics of coal spontaneous combustion, for example, thermal analysis technology [5-7], programmed heating experiment [8-10] and coal spontaneous combustion experiment [11,12]. In these methods, programmed heating experiment could be conducted to determine the oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity quickly."

There used to be a time when bins were designed for total volume and placed in any available place of the plant. Poke holes were provided and feed was maintained by manual prodding, lancing, hammering, and by various mechanical flow-profiting devices. Little thought was given to what occurred inside the bins and why materials did not flow. Indeed, such mental effort was hard to justify while low-cost manual labor was plentiful, quality standards low, and rates of feed moderate. The past fifteen years have seen a drastic change in these conditions. We all know that labor for hard manual work is becoming unavailable at any wage, level. Standards of product uniformity are continuously rising. This uniformity is just as important in a fine ore feed to ball mills as it is in a cattle feed or in a flour mix. Rates of feed now frequently exceed 2,000 tons per hour per feeder. At that rate there is no time for, lancing or prodding. An efficient storage, plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, at the prescribed rate, and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions such as blending of different grades, degasification of aerated, powders, isolation of different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. Gas or liquid pressures can be simply contained by, a sufficient head of flowing solid.

The Escalante Silver Mine in Southwest Utah produces an average of 71.000 kg (2.3 million troy ounces) of silver dore annually. Precipitates from a cyanide leach circuit are treated by either acid leaching prior to fusion or a direct fusion with nitre. Process development, plant experience, and a comparison of both methods will be discussed. The Flat Gap Mine is on Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Valley of East Tennessee, Large zinc orebodies occupy zones of solution and collapse breccias in lower Ordovician Kingsport limestone and dolomite, The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue is dolomite, The orebearing horizons are considerably more than 95% covered by thick residual clay, and geochemical prospecting under these conditions is an effective exploration technique which played an important role in the discovery and exploration of the Flat Gap Mine, The residual nature of the over-burden at Flat Gap is emphasized, Background heavy metals (mainly zinc) range from 50 to 200 ppm, and the anomalies range to 3000 ppm and more, About 80% to 9W0 of the soil zinc is in relatively insoluble form in solid solution with the hydrous iron oxides and in the crystal lattice of the clay minerals. Quite discrete zones in the soil with sharply contrasting metal value boundaries mark vestiges of bedrock mineralization, and such anomalous soil areas are often contiguous with partially weathered ore. It has not been possible on the basis of chemical criteria to distinguish between an anomaly formed from non-commercial mineralization and one formed from ore.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. The stereo net plots show average principal stress orientations of: 1) [ ] plunge 1 degree. These data suggest that the N 55 to 70 W oblique-slip faults were produced by a nearly

Maintenance of mining equipment has become so complex and important from a cost and product ion standpoint that the organization must be set up in an engineering fashion to be successful. Production costs are greatly affected by proper maintenance. Tonnages can only be met when operating time is at its maximum and breakdown time is at its minimum. Last, but equally important, large capital expenditures must be protected and improved The effectiveness of the maintenance program will, in many respects, be a direct, result of the effort put torch in developing the overall program. Once the need of maintenance is realized, the next step is to determine what the organization should be and what it should accomplish. Follow through is then most vital. Preventing machine breakdowns and reducing maintenance costs are the primary goals of all maintenance organizations. Good preventive maintenance, a system for inspecting equipment and a complete record of inspections will help attain these goals.

According to recent estimates, nearly 30 percent of the material from underground coal mining in the United States is rejected on the surface as waste. This accumulation of almost three billion tons of coarse and fine coal refuse is primarily from coal cleaning operations. The marketable coal is intermixed with sandstone, clays, shales, and carbonaceous rocks, which must be removed and disposed of in an acceptable manner. The disposal of mineral wastes is a major environmental concern. The most common types of environmental problems associated with coal refuse disposal are acid formation, erosion, and sediment control. Other areas of concern include air and water quality, combustion control, mine sealing, and reclamation. This paper focuses on these topics and attempts to outline special environmental features which can be incorporated into the design and construction of a coal refuse facility. Often these measures can minimize and possibly eliminate the potential environ- mental hazards. It is imperative, however, that these measures be adopted prior to and during construction, because of the relative ease and cost savings compared to post-construction implementation.
