Magma Copper Company, San Manuel Division, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Newmont Mining Corporation and located at San Manuel, Arizona. The ore body is a dessiminated porphry copper deposit in quartz monzonite. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite with minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite, and covellite. The molybdenite occurs mainly on fracture faces or else associated with quartz veinlets. Pyrite is the major sulphide mineral in gangue. The feed to the concentrator from the underground mine is approximately 0.720 percent copper and 0.029 percent molybdenite. The concentrator has a design capacity of 62,000 tons of ore daily. After a standard ore treatment circuit consisting of grinding, rougher flotation, regrinding, and cleaning, a bulk concentrate is produced which contains 27 to 29 percent copper and 1.0 to 1.2 percent molybdenite. This concentrate is pumped to the molybdenite plant feed thickener.

Geomechanics and geohydrological considerations for the seal design for mine openings are presented. Design guidelines derived from laboratory and in-situ experiments are proposed. The results suggest that seal design, specifications and material selection should be site-specific. Performance requirements for a specific seal location should be identified. Evaluation of sealing effectiveness should be made on the entire seal system, i.e. seal, seal-rock interface, excavation-induced damage zone and the surrounding rock.

The RiverRenew Tunnel System project in Alexandria, VA forms part of a CSO scheme aimed at reducing overflows of combined stormwater and sewage into the Potomac River during storm events. A major piece of the project is a 12-foot internal diameter tunnel of approximately 12,000 feet length lined with a single-pass precast concrete segmental liner and excavated by an Earth-Pressure Balanced Shield TBM. The tunnel lies between 120 to 140 feet below grade in the clays of the Upper Potomac Formation with occasional dips of more granular, saturated soils of the Terrace Formation and the Alluvium. The TBM is launched from a figure-8 configuration Pumping/Screening Shaft located within AlexRenew’s operational Water Resource Recovery Facility. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during the launch of the TBM in short mode within a highly congested site and from narrow deep shafts.

In October 1993, the first two of a series of full scale passive biological treatment cells were constructed to treat mine drainage from the Burleigh Mine (located approximately 48 km west of Denver, Colorado in the Clear Creek/Central City Superfund Site). The two cells are each 19-21 m long, 10.7 m wide and 1.2 m deep. Each cell contains approximately 216 cubic meters of substrate (composted manure) and is designed to treat 60 L/min of mine flow. One cell is designed as an upflow reactor and the other cell is designed as a downflow reactor. The differences in flow hydraulics and treatment efficiencies will be tested in these two cell for approximately nine months before the remaining cells are built to treat all the discharge. The substrate material was selected based on a series of bench scale tests. During the tests, the amount of metals removed was determined. The design flow rate was based on a sulfide generation rate of 400 nanomoles of sulfide generated per cubic centimeter of substrate per day. Metal removal results for the first three months of operation of the two cells will be presented and compared to results of bench and pilot studies at other sites.

The brines from the sub-surface of the Laguna del Rey dry lake are pumped to Química del Rey, S. A. plant, where they are cooled in adiabatic crystallizers precipitating sodium sulphate decahydrate. This salt is dehydrated in multiple effect evaporators and dried in rotary kilns producing high purity anhydrous sodium sulphate. The spent brines from the sodium sulphate operation are concentrated in solar ponds, precipitating astrakanite and leaving a brine with a higher concentration of magnesium ions. This brine is treated with calcium chloride solution to eliminate the remainder of sulphates, leaving a solution of magnesium chloride ready for the manufacture of refractory grade magnesium oxide or periclase. The magnesium chloride is reacted with dolime to produce magnesium hidroxide which is washed, filtered, and calcined to produce soft burned magnesium oxide, which is briquetted and dead burned to produce the periclase.

Recent developments in fine grinding by the means of mechanical impaction are the result of continuing improvements in modern machine construction. This is especially true when related to the bearings and mechanically operated parts of impact mills. These improvements allow manufacturers to increase the speeds of the impacting members Most of the more common forms of size reductions, such as percussion, pressure, friction and sectioning, or cutting were at one time accomplished by human hands. These actions were transferred to machinery. Originally of limited application, their use widened as industrial materials and construction became more sophisticated.

Filtration is an important solid liquid separation technology employed widely in the mineral processing industries. The effectiveness of the filtration operation can be influenced by numerous variables, related to the particulate phase, the slurry rheology and the equipment. The classical approach for analysis is based on Darcy's law. Knowledge of the cake pore microstructure and its correlation to macroscopic cake properties is required to model the filtration operation from a fundamental point of view. Since cake formation seems to occur randomly, a 3D Monte Carlo method was used to simulate cake formation. The configuration for simulation was a space with width of 500 µm, length of 500 µm and height of 4000 µm. Size distributions of five different industrial products whose particle size distributions follow the Rosin Rammler distribution function were used. The particle shape was assumed to be spherical. The simulated cake structures were described in terms of volume porosity (volume of pore space per unit volume of cake) and surface porosity (area of pore space per unit area of a cross section). The results indicate: I) it is possible to simulate 3D packing, which mimics cake structure, using the Monte Carlo method, 2) segregation phenomena occurs during simulated cake formation, 3) the values of calculated porosity for simulated samples B, C, D, and E were lower than those determined for corresponding industrial products Br, Cr, Dr, and Er, and 4) some structures of simulated samples seem to correlate with laboratory leaf test data obtained for different products from plant operations.

Chemisorbed oleate films on the surfaces of fluorite, barite, and calcite were studied by means of infrared spectrophotometry. Evidence is presented which indicates the mineral anions, i.e., fluoride, sulfate, and carbonate, are displaced from the mineral surfaces as a result of the adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, chemisorption reactions between oleic acid and fluorite or calcite occurred spontaneously in the absence of water. Carbon dioxide was identified as a reaction product when dry calcite was contacted with oleic acid. There was no evidence of reaction between oleic acid and barite in the absence of water.

The Central and Southern Appalachians were the major sources of gold in the United States throughout the first half of the 19th century and have continued to yield gold to the present day. Small amounts of gold were probably extracted by the Indians and the Spaniards but the first documented report of gold in the region was made by Thomas Jefferson who found a four pound lump of gold ore, which yielded 0.85 troy oz., in the Rappahannock River of Virginia in 1782. Gold was subsequently discovered in North Carolina between 1793 and 1799, in Virginia in 1806, in South Carolina in 1827, in Georgia in 1829 and in Alabama about 1830 (Becker, 1894-5; Pardee and Park, 1948). The gold belts of the Central and Southern Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces are shown in Figure 1. The superimposed circles indicate the mount of production from some of the more productive and well known areas. Although North Carolina produced far more gold than the other states, the most significant concentrated area of production is the Dahlonega District in Georgia which yielded more than 500,000 troy ounces. After discovery, gold production increased rapidly as shown in Figure 2. Production was at its maximum between 1830 and 1852 with combined totals generally exceeding 30,000 troy ounces per year. Production dropped sharply after the California gold rush in 1849 as experienced miners moved westward in search of bigger and easier stakes. After the Civil War briefly halted gold mining in the Appalachians, production rose to an average of about 8,000 ounces per year from 1865 until 1878 and to an average of about 13,000 ounces per year from 1881 until 1915 when it again fell to near nil (Pardee and Park, 1948). Minor resurgences occurred in the 1930's and 1940's. Although there has been no reported production in recent years, it is likely that "weekend panners" still remove hundreds of ounces from streams annually. The total reported production for the area through 1959 is in excess of 2.5 million troy ounces.

"The 4c segment is a part of the ""Oman National Railway Project” linking the mining area in the surroundings of Thumrait and the port of Salalah. It is 90 km long and the last 40 km stretch crosses a mountainous area near the city of Salalah. The project includes the excavation of a 33 km double and single bore tunnel and 10 km of safety tunnels. This mountainous area is a holiday destination for Omanis, thanks to its beautiful landscapes, especially in summer time due to the monsoon rains. The tunnelling design had to take into account both these environmental constraints and the limestone rock formations crossed, which are affected by significant karst features. Given the context, the conventional tunnelling method has been preferred. INTRODUCTION The Oman Railway Project (Fig. 1) covers the construction of approximately 2,150 km of railway line for freight and passenger transport which will connect together Oman’s main towns and industrial sites and it will form part of the Arabian Peninsula railway system “GCC Project”. The non-electrified double-track railway line must guarantee a speed of 220 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains and must guarantee the transit of AAR (Association of American Railroad) H and D plates using clearance envelope according to AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association) requirements. The design alignment must have maximum radiuses of curvature of 3,250m and a maximum gradient of 1.0%. The project is divided into 9 constructional and functional segments. •,Segment 4c will be constructed in the southern region of Oman, close to the border with Yemen, to connect the town of Thumrait with the Port of Salalah. •,Segment 4c will run through the Dhofar region and will be mainly used by the freight traffic which currently travels by road."

There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the key parameters influencing the gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide dosing strategy was changed to reduce preg-rob gold masses and cut reagent consumption A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in CIL was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/month.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. The Permanente plant of Kaiser Cement & Gypsum Corporation is located at a unique thick deposit of Calera Limestone (Figure 1) on the southwest side of San Francisco Bay. Limestone is rare in the eugeosynclinal Franciscan assemblage, constituting less than 0.1 percent of the total volume. On the northwest part of the San Francisco peninsula Calera Limestone is present as isolated masses from the type sect ion near Rockaway Beach southeastward for ten miles, where the belt is truncated by the San Andreas fault. The large Permanente deposit is sixteen miles south of the truncated belt, on the northeast side of the San Andreas fault. Scattered small exposures are known for about twenty miles southeasterly from Permanente. (1,2) Most deposits of Calera are thin; the type section is about two hundred feet thick. At Permanente, however, the normal limestone section contains at least four hundred feet of limestone; and, due to folding and extensive faulting, the total vertical thickness of the limestone section is over 1400 feet. The unusual thickness of limestone is due to low angle thrust faulting. This fortuitous structure formed a deposit of limestone that supplies an 8,500,000 barrel cement plant in a major metropolitan market.

The disposal of phosphatic clays has presented a problem to the phosphate industry since the mining of phosphate rock first began. As the flotation process was introduced in the late 1920's, the problem of clay disposal was increased significantly since clay is present in proportionally greater quantities in reserves yielding flotation concentrates. Because of their physical character and the tremendous surface area per unit volume, these clays have the characteristic of retaining large volumes of water as they are slurried during processing. The phosphatic clays with which we are dealing consist primarily of apatite, wavellite and montmorillonite. In the beneficiation process, we remove the -150 mesh material as waste. However, the particles are essentially smaller than -325 mesh, and more than 70% are smaller than three microns. The disposal of clay and the recovery of a portion of the water require settling areas with a capacity ranging up to 2 cubic feet for each cubic foot of phosphate matrix mined. According to a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, the average cost for disposal of these wastes is 24.5 cents per ton of, product (U. S. Bureau of Mines Circular 8404). This is a major cost of phosphate rock production.

The quest for ore in an open pit is fundamentally an earth moving proposition. This thesis is vividly underscored by the rapidly increasing volume of waste to be removed in newer mines, where in some instances waste to ore ratios have reached as high as 20 to 1. Continuing depletion of high grade reserves, greater demand for raw materials, coupled with ever climbing labor costs, have made the problem still more pronounced and the need for more effective means of earth moving in an open pit even more acute. A conservative approach to the problem has been to upgrade the sizes of conventional earth moving equipment such as shovels and trucks. In many open pits, particularly in the C.S., this has been responsible for the generally down- ward trend of earth moving costs. None the less, the investment costs of these machines are high, and their gigantic engines are seldom fully utilized. Moreover, a large number of operators are required and maintenance remains relatively high. Unfortunately most people have felt that no other viable alternative was in sight within today's technological capabilities.

J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. "INTRODUCTION Over the past twenty years this Linear-Regression Modeling has become widely accepted for ensuring limits are not exceeded at a site, using the Scaled-Distance variable. In today’s industry, numerous equations are present for different scenarios, geologic environments, hole sizes, and numerous other factors with an emphasis on site-specific equations developed for all major projects; however, underground blasting applications have not been analyzed to a great degree of detail. Without previous knowledge this puts underground blasting operations into a guessing-game to ensure that vibration levels are not exceeded. This paper will review two recent projects that have been worked on by the authors and linear-regression models that were used with both burn cuts and stope blasts. BLAST VIBRATIONS MODELING The first major research project conducted in the United States on blasting vibration was Bulletin 442 (Thoenen & Windes, 1942) which looked at the relationship between blasting and blast vibrations in the fall of 1940. This study examined numerous blasts and began the investigation into topics such as damping, structural damage from vibrations, frequency dependency on vibration, resonance vibration, delayed blasting, and numerous other factors. Bulletin 442 had two major conclusions which are: 1. The vibration from a blast can be predicted with a relationship of size of the shot and distance to the structure (now known as scaled distance) 2. “The vibration of a structure at resonance does not in itself cause damage because of the restraining effect of damping inherent in the building” (Thoenen & Windes, 1942) Due to the increase of blasting near homes and busier areas the USBM commissioned an additional study to further develop a few of the topics covered in Bulletin 442; this study would go on to be published as RI 6561 (Duvall, Johnson, Meyer, & Devine, 1963) with the study looking into delayed blasting and the relationship between charge weight, distance, and peak particle velocity of the blast. "A booster fan is an underground mechanical ventilation equipment installed in series with a main surface fan that is used to boost the air pressure provided by the surface main fan passing through it. As mining continues to expand and go deeper, the need for improved and efficient ventilation increases. This has led to the use of booster fans and other auxiliary ventilation devices in underground mines. This paper details experiments and results carried out at Missouri S&T Experimental Mine that investigated air leakage and recirculation caused by the use of booster fans. The results were compared with the situations where booster fans are used and not used.The variables considered were the booster fan blade angle and the fan combinations. Air quantity measurements were taken at each individual stopping under a number of scenarios and across four blade angle settings. The first set of situations examined were; the main surface Joy fan only running, the main Joy, and the west booster fan running, and the main Joy fan and east booster fan running. Observations were made which lead to the conclusion from the experimental analysis that booster fans affect the behavior of leakage and recirculation. The locations of the booster fan and the blade angle setting have the most effect on leakage and recirculation. To limit the potential for system leakage and recirculation, the location and size of a booster fan in a ventilation system should be thoroughly evaluated.INTRODUCTION Missouri S&T Experimental Mine ventilation system The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has two shafts. One currently serves as the main intake shaft. Air is forced through the main shaft by a Joy Manufacturing Vane Axial fan and follows the direction shown on the map on Figure 1. The air is currently naturally exhausted through the Wheeler portal. As indicated on the map there are eight stoppings in the mine, with stoppings number 2 and 8 fitted with man doors. The mine also consists of three raises which are either fully or partially blocked, two portals with one acting as an exhaust and the other generally closed by a hydraulic Kennedy door."

The Appalachian coal region is an area here the small mining operation dominates. The large number of small operations makes the coal industry in chat area very competitive, the industry concentration ratio being low. This feature is reflected in the nature and behavior of the coal supply and demand viz a viz the coal market. The vast majority of the small coal operations in Eastern Kentucky for example, are contractors. The circumstances under which a large mining company can elect to use contractors to supplement their coal production are examined. The pros and cons of small underground single unit mines and larger multiple unit mines are discussed.
