The Cortez Mining District has had a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862 as previously reported (1) (2). More recently Cortez Gold Mines (i) has operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the U.S. for treating higher grade finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1520 tonnes per day on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. Starting in 1973, the mill was operated at 2050 tonnes per day on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres which is located 13 kilometers to the west of the Cortez installation. In February of 1976 the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operation. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Much valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs and is well described in an earlier publication (3). Releaching of the ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez was continued with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979.

The Glenharold Mine is a surface mine operated by Consolidation Coal Company. The mine is located approximately 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of Bismarck, and 3 kilometers (2 miles) southeast of Stanton in west central North Dakota. Glenharold has a nominal design capacity of 3.0 million metric tons per year (3.3 million short tons per year). With the exception of local coal sales, this production supplies fuel for Basin Electric's Leland Olds generating station, a mine mouth power plant. The mine has 175 hourly and 50 salary employees. The Glenharold reserve extends over 210 square kilometers (80 square miles). The mining area is on a dissected plateau between the broad flat Missouri River flood plain to the north and the gently rolling uplands to the south. Erosion by intermittently flowing streams has produced many narrow, steep-walled, drainage ways. Mining begins at the 6 meter (20 foot) cover line and continues to the economic recovery line.

Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

"Bleeding", as used in mine ventilation language, has a number of meanings among mining men and is regarded with different degrees of importance. This lack of uniformity stems from a number of specific situations. A method that is adequate in a mildly gaseous mine may fall short in a very gaseous mine. Projected bleeders could be dependable under a certain type of roof, and totally unsatisfactory under a different type. Similarly a plan of bleeders can be rendered useless due to undulations of seam and water in one mine and function well in another. Finally, what is effective in a mining system with partial recovery will not suffice with full recovery. You may wonder, then, if there is a common denominator for the essential function of "bleeding". In my opinion, there is, and it can be defined as controlled movement of air across an active pillar line toward the back and outby ends of the adjacent gob area into the headings provided for the purpose. The objective is to maintain as methane-free as practicable a belt adjacent to the working places, so that, if face ventilation is interrupted temporarily, the gas will not accumulate in dangerous volumes at the working faces before ventilation is restored. It's possible for these temporary interruptions to be unnoticed in time or at all. In such cases, ineffective bleeding could cause a disaster. This has happened. To control, there must be power. That is to say, there must be adequate air, pressure differential between the front and back ends of a pillar line to facilitate proper regulation for diverting of air to the various portions of the gob and as far away from the active section as is practicable. As an indication of the importance of pressure, it is noteworthy that one may provide and maintain in a reasonably open condition a heading or two for a bleeder system and fail to obtain effective bleeding .because air pressure differential is inadequate. On the other hand, you are all familiar with the fact that pillar lines in some seams can be ventilated adequately by air flow straight across the gob when the section is near a main return shaft and thus obtains a heavy pressure differential.

Since it has been demonstrated that silica caused phagocytic cells to activate lipoxygenase metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids we thought selective inhibition of this metabolic pathway might be helpful in treatment of silicosis. It is known that lipoxygenase metabolism plays a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and hypersensitivity conditions. Further, it is believed that the alveolar phagocytic cells which engulf silica begin the inflammatory cycle which produces the metabolic products, cytokines and growth factors which causes fibrosis in the lung. There have been indications that drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase can inhibit fibrosis from other causes. Previously, we developed a method which detects the activity of lipoxygenase metabolism by measuring free radical oxidation via light production or chemiluminescence (CL). We decided to apply this method to phagocytic cells that would be found in the lung in the presence of silica with and without newly developed inhibitors of the lipoxygenase reaction. We used drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase directly including AA861 (TAKEDA), A63162 (Abbott), and an inhibitor that scavenges free radicals produced from the lipoxygenase reaction, nordihydroguairetic acid. In addition we used an indirect inhibitor, tetrandrine. We found drug inhibition of silica activated CL from alveolar macrophages, neutrophils and human leukemia (HL-60) cells differentiated with DMSO. Nordihydroguairetic acid 2x10-5M produced almost complete inhibition in all three cell types. In human leukemia cells (HL-60) A63162 and tetrandrine were equally inhibitory at 42% while in human neutrophils A63162 and tetrandrine were less active 22 and 10% respectively. In macrophages A63162 and AA861 were less than 50% inhibitory to cellular CL at 2xl0-5M. Direct assay of tetrandrine (2x10-5M) with sodium arachidonate and soybean lipoxygenase reveals no inhibition. All antilipoxygenase drugs regardless of mechanism were inhibitory to cellular chemiluminescence from all three types of phagocytic cells. These drugs alone or in mixtures could prove useful in treatment of silicosis.

Unsaturated flow and solute transport were studied in three large columns measuring 1.5 m diameter x 2 m height, loaded with up to 3.7 t of oxidised waste rock, which was excavated from the Stratmat pile at Heath Steele Division, Noranda Inc. and contained elevated concentrations of zinc in the pore water. The bottom of each column was partitioned into 37 squares, each of which was drained independently. Following rain simulations at the top of the rock bed, the drainage in each drain port was monitored for volume and physicochemical parameters at pre-determined intervals. This paper describes some of the observations resulting from the experiments. The main conclusion of the study is that unsaturated flows in waste rock are heterogeneous, and flow channelling is ubiquitous. The results imply that the transport of solutes from oxidised waste rock to its toe drainage is subject to various controlling mechanisms, including geochemical equilibrium control and successive pore water dilution control.

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). The removal of arsenic from process streams as ferric arsenate compounds is being practised by mining industries. Therefore, the solubility and stability of these solids is of considerable importance to the mining plants that have to keep the environment free from pollutants. There is some information on the solubility of the ferric arsenate compounds, mainly on scorodite, obtained from synthetic solution. However, there is not so much work on ferric arsenate compounds formed at high temperatures (175 - 230°C) during the leaching process. In the present work, the solubility of the ferric arsenate compounds formed during acidic pressure oxidation of arsenopyrite is presented. The results of the solubility tests showed that the ferric arsenate compounds formed at high temperatures (200 - 230°C) and high pressures (1034 - 1551 kPa 0,) released arsenic into solution in amounts less than 1.2 ppm and iron in amounts no higher than 1.0 ppm. So, they seem to be potential compounds for arsenic and iron disposal.

A longwall chain pillar is comprised of two distinct zones, a solid elastic core enclosed by an exterior of failed or yielded coal. For the purpose of pillar design, the ability to delineate the extent of pillar yielding and correlate the yielding with the applied pillar load is of fundamental importance. A study was initiated on a longwall section of a West Virginia mine to: (1) delineate the location of the elastic core-yield zone boundary, (2) examine the stress distribution within the pillar, and (3) quantify pillar stability as the longwall face retreated toward an instrumented pillar. A US Bureau of Mines sonic velocity probe was used in conjunction with vibrating wire stress meters to define the elastic core-yield zone boundary and the migration of vertical stress toward the pillar core. The extent of the yield zone as determined by field results is compared with the extent of the failed zone as predicted using a series of equations developed by Wilson.

Information Technology has addressed those problems unique to senior management in the mineral industry. In general, these problems are those concerned with decision-making. Peter Drucker in his discussion of making effective decisions identifies five phases: (1) define the problem, (2) analyze the problem, (3) develop alternate solutions, (4) decide the best solution, and (5) convert the decision into effective action. The scope of the chapter by Guernsey addresses the first three phases which provide input to the decision-maker. The decisions to be made relate, in most instances, to the economics related to a mineral property or process. Computer models have been designed to generate these economic and financial evaluations. No one model is appropriate to the solution of all management's problems. In this chapter several applications are identified and summarized; a model for the economic evaluation of a mineral property is described in greater detail. The implementation of such models is dependent on the unique needs of management.

Barite deposits located in Dinek and surrounding region have important economic features with their large reserve capacity for Turkey. The objective of this study is to elucidate geological and depositional characteristics in terms of. site investigation and chemical analysis. In order to do this, geological area of about 300 km2 was examined and detailed geological map was constructed. It was observed that Barite mineralization in these deposits was occurred in carbonate and pelitic rocks of Lower Cambrian-Lower Ordovician. Deposits were exposed to advanced diagenesis regional metamorphism and tectonics that rotated and deformed the barites; therefore, barites shows secondary veins, brecciate and fracturing structure. Even though, a few light isotope values of barites may suggest hydrothermal and exhalative sedimentary characteristics or possible mixing with magmatic fluids, generally heavy isotope values indicate that the sulfate ions were supplied from coeval seawater and, many of sedimentary features and petrological, geochemical characters support dominantly sedimentary origin.

Flotation of oxide minerals, particularly silicates, with cationic collectors differs substantially from classic flotation of sulfide minerals using sulfhydryl collectors. In the case of cationic flotation of these minerals, in general: 1. There is a greater importance of electrostatic interaction between mineral and collector. 2. Longer-chained collectors are required; as a rule at least 10 carbons must be present in the hydrocarbon chain. 3. Moderate concentration of collector is required. 4. Attachment between collector and mineral appears to be less strong even though the system may exhibit a large contact angle. 5. Required conditioning time before flotation is usually relatively short. 6. There is sensitivity to slimes. 7. The collectors usually possess frothing power. 8. Selectivity of cationic collectors for specific minerals is usually poor. Almost any of the oxide and silicate minerals may be floated using cationic collectors. The northern and central Appalachian coal basin in the eastern United States has been the source of about two-thirds of the nation's coal output during the 20th century. This region includes parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky. It covers about 130,000 km2 (50,000 sq miles) of the Appalachian coal basin and ranks as one of the world's most important coal production regions (Fig. 1). The coal industry's heyday in northern and central Appalachia has passed. This was due to competition from other fuels and low-sulfur coal produced in the West and because of the declining use of coking coal for steelmaking. Nevertheless, the region still plays a vital role in US coal production. It currently produces about 40% by weight of the nation's coal (its share is about one-half when measured by the energy content of the coal), contributes substantially to electricity generation and serves as the mainstay of US coal exports.

Leach pads of 272,000 tonnes (300,000 st) and 910,000 tonnes (1,000,000 st) with associated operating ponds have recently been constructed on sidehill locations with up to 20 percent slopes. The larger pad was designed in anticipation of ore heights up to 30 meters (100 feet). This paper describes site investigations and civil engineering design as well as construction experience associated with development of these pads. The leach pads were underlain by a double liner system consisting of 2 mm (80- mil) HDPE over compacted fine-grained tailings, with an intermediate leak detection layer. Both sand and geotextile drainage layers were used. Pad slopes were limited by the factor of safety against sliding on the HDPE liner. The sites for the facilities had been substantially disturbed by prior mining and construction activities. Natural conditions included peat layers and locally swampy ground. Site preparation included french drains to lower the water table and stripping of unsuitable subgrade materials.

Selective flotation and adsorption behavior of zircon and rutile under hot soap conditions have been examined. Conditioning temperature, pH and washing steps were shown to control the flotation selectivity. The adsorption of the sodium soap of oleic acid at zircon- water and rutile-water interfaces was investigated through micro- electrophoresis and adsorption density measurements. The soap adsorption on the zircon surface increased markedly with increasing temperature due to a strong chemisorption/surface reaction, and was almost independent of pH. In contrast, the soap adsorption on rutile decreased at high pH values. A simple physisorption plus hydrophobic interaction appeared to be the principal mechanism for the soap adsorption on rutile at moderate temperatures (below ~70(C), beyond which it may change to chemisorption through an activation process. Water wash, particularly under acidic conditions (pH 2-3), of the rutile particles treated with soap, will lead to a desorption of the soap from the rutile surface by forming an acid salt precipitate.

Mansfield Canyon, of the Wrightson Mining District, Santa Cruz County, Coronado National Forest, Arizona, was actively mined in the late 1800's and early 19001s, with minor activity until 1953. The main products were lead, silver, copper, zinc, and gold occurring in polymetallic quartz veins. The canyon contains numerous adits and waste dumps, some of which generate metal-loaded acid. Samples of seeps, waste dumps and bedrock have been collected for various analyses: metal concentrations, acid base accounting (ABA), and water quality to evaluate the extent of oxidation and metal release from the start of mining until present, the potential impact, and reclamation options. Although the waste-rock piles within the canyon are small (2,000-10,000 tons), they have a high sulfide content with little or no neutralizing capacity. It is planned, therefore, to move the waste piles either to a constructed repository site within the canyon or to a copper leach facility to be used as an acid generator.

A study based on a statistically designed sets of experiments (central composite design) was conducted to determine the optimum conditions for leaching a subbituminous coal (7.0 % ash) from the middle Wyodak seam in mild sulfuric acid solutions. The statistical analysis was conducted with the ash content and ash removal as the dependent variables and with the coal loading, acid concentration, ferric ion concentration, and temperature as the independent variables. Treatment of the experimental data via a simple genetic algorithm (GA) revealed that acid concentration and temperature are the two most critical variables. Unlike the case with bituminous coal, the ferric ions addition shows no beneficial effect. The optimum "macro response" predicted by GA was verified experimentally; the ash content was reduced to 2.7%, which is close to the value predicted by GA. The ash content was further reduced to 1.7% in a two-stage leaching process devised by incorporating the optimization results with that of leaching kinetic studies.

Discovery of a mine is a complex affair. No mine is simply found but comes about through the efforts of many. It is difficult to establish "credit" when a mine is found and becomes a viable operation, or "guilt" when a mine is lost, goes bankrupt, or remains undeveloped. The story of the Toquepala and Cuajone developments entails various stages of: (1) discovery and recognition; (2) testing and innovation; (3) political and industrial negotiation and intrigue; and (4) finance, development, and operation. The Toquepala and Cuajone projects introduced innovative drilling techniques, were among the first major porphyry copper deposits to utilize induced polarization (1P)geophysical methods, were among the first deposits to undertake complete feasibility studies on drilled- out ore bodies, and were developed by the first large Western Hemisphere copper mining consortium. Many persons have contributed to the development of these two great deposits. Some of the names have been lost and certain contributions have gone unrecognized. I apologize for these omissions.
