Many factors, from engineering and design to supply, installation, and operation affect the service lifespan of cast refractory linings. If a shortcoming occurs at any of these stages, the lining lifespan can be drastically reduced. Although not every aspect that can affect a cast refractory lining?s lifespan is outlined here, a few key points are highlighted, with an emphasis on the various installation parameters. This paper was presented at the Coloquium on Management Techniques in the Mining and Metallurgical Industry, which was organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and held in Pretoria during June 1988. The author asks whether technical audits are of any use to management. Technical auditing he defines as an evaluation undertaken by an outsider of whether a technical activity is being carried out correctly. After examining the types of technical auditing, and its prerequisites and procedures, he describes its application in regard to quality, and to production processes and their adequacy. He then answers his question by saying that, not only are technical audits very useful, but they form an essential element in the provision of quality products. In addition, they give management the opportunity of testing whether the activities of the organization are being conducted correctly. This is their most important function in that they alert management to areas of potential growth, modernization, and innovation. However, the use to which technical auditing is put remains the key to its value; that is, its value depends on the positive action that each manager takes as the result of a technical audit.

The effects of extensive solid-waste packing as a support medium are described. It is shown that the waste packing resulted in excellent hangingwall conditions with only minor deleterious effects.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

The substitution of functional groups in covalent trithiocarbonate collector molecules influences the selective and non-selective bonding of collector molecules to mineral surfaces, as well as flotation efficiency in a mixed sulphide ore. A description is given of the general geology, structure and minerals of economic significance of the Loolekop copper orebody at Phalaborwa. The open pit mining method is described with details of drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and primary crushing operations. A brief description is given of mine planning and its relationship to the control of the mining operation.

SYNOPSIS The effects of concurrent recovery, prior creep deformation and concurrent high temperature fatigue on the coarsening of some carbides in steels have been studied. It was found that concurrent recovery enhances the coarsening rate by orders of magnitude and prior creep deformation causes an enhancement of about two times. Finally, concurrent fatigue causes an initial greatly enhanced coarsening rate but after prolonged cycling dissolution of the carbides occurs.

In a former Spotlight articlet, Dr P. J. D. Lloyd focused attention on the shortage of locally trained mining and metallurgical graduates, and indicated that the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) has been exerting pressure to boost the intake of undergraduates in mineral disciplines. This article reviews the recruiting activities of the South African minerals industry over the past decade, and discusses some of the programmes that are in operation at the moment, particularly those aimed at potential graduates.

The isotherms that are usually taken to represent the force 'driving' the adsorption in carbon-in-pulp processes may change from contactor to contactor. This paper reports on an investigation into the extent to which this Isotherm shift is Influenced by the changes in oxygen and cyanide concentration that occur in operating plants. The impact of the isotherm shift on the reliability of simulation results is examined.

The Witbank/Middelburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted a colloquium entitled 'Recent Mining and Metallurgical Developments in the Eastern Transvaal', at the Witbank Civic Centre on Wednesday, 25th September, 1985. An attendance of close on 300 delegates bore testimony to the popularity of the theme. Two well-attended cocktail parties were held at different venues on the evening prior to the Colloquium. These were hosted at the South African Coal Estates Recreation Club and Middelburg Country Club.

The paper reviews the effects of fast-neutron irradiation on the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steels at irradiation temperatures of less than 400°C, using, as an example, work carried out at Pelindaba on an AISI 316 type steel produced in South Africa. Damage produced in these steels at higher irradiation temperatures and fluences is also briefly discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of some methods of overcoming or decreasing the effects of irradiation damage.

Sixteenth to seventeenth century Kalanga miners dug a series of sub-vertical shafts into a 10 to 30 m wide zone of copper ore at the Thakadu Mine near Matsitama, Botswana. They went down at least 6 m in search of thick malachite veins. The host rock was hand 'cobbed' to remove the veins, which were then smelted nearby in small bowl furnaces. Evidently, the furnaces lacked clay superstructures, since a simple pit was sufficient to smelt the almost pure malachite. The copper bloom was probably refined in villages further away.

The paper describes how the level of the water-table was reduced as a result of increased pumping of water from the mine. Because such a condition in an area where there is compactable material above solid dolomite results In surface movement, steps were taken to restore the water-table to its former level. These included the return of water underground via a sinkhole and boreholes, and the piping of water from another mine.

Die aanwending van 'n rekenaarprogram vir die simulering van ondergrondse afbouaktiwiteite met die oog op toerustingkeuse, word aangegee. Voorlopige resultate wat in die praktyk behaal is dui op 'n hoë mate van betroubaarheid vir die program, terwyl die gebruik van die nuutste tipe hoë -kapasiteit laaimasjiene, koolsnyers en wisselkarre, groat potensiaal inhou.
