The traditional view taken of commodity prices is that they are cyclical, with strong demand boosting prices and attracting new suppliers. The resulting increased supply pushes prices down with consequent exit of the higher cost producers. And so the process repeats itself. Little attention is given to shifts in underlying global issues and their effect on the traditional process which is seen as being controlled by ?amorphous? market forces with producers profiting from the good times and trying to survive in the bad.. The questions posed are: does this still apply and will it apply into the future? What new factors are affecting the cycles? Can we expect to find the traditional commodity cycles repeated in the 21stcentury? Are producers powerless within the forces of the cycles? Forces likely to affect future commodity prices will be suggested, using gold, zinc, copper, tin and coal as case studies. The long-term downward trend in the real price of commodities is identified.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

Draglines are massive machines extensively utilized in opencast mines for overburden stripping. The demanding working environment induces fractures, wear and tear, and fatigue failures in dragline components and eventuates in extended maintenance, lengthy downtimes, and loss of production. The bucket is the main source of external loads on the machinery, since interactions with ground materials take place in this region. This study aims to develop a generic finite element model of the stress on an operating bucket. This entails (i) three-dimensional modelling of a dragline bucket, (ii) analytical estimation of resistive forces in the bucket movement, (iii) three-dimensional simulation of the moving bucket using finite element analysis (FEA), and (iv) sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of formation characteristics on stress variation. Simulation results imply that the drag hitch and digging teeth are the elements of the bucket that are most prone to failure. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicates that internal friction angle of the formation is the dominant parameter leading fluctuations in stress values. Changes in stress level are least influenced by formation density.

"Gasification is a process of thermal conversion of solid carbonaceous materials into a gaseous fuel called syngas. Coal gasification is an efficient technology for a range of systems for producing low-emission electricity and other high-value products such as chemicals, synthetic fuels, etc.The paper presents the High-Temperature Winkler (HTW) gasification process, which is designed to utilize low-rank feedstock such as coals with high ash content, lignite, biomass etc. The process is characterized by a bubbling fluidized bed, where coal devolatilization and partial oxidation and gasification of coal char and volatiles take place, and by a freeboard where partial combustion and gasification of coal char take place.The recent development of the high-pressure HTW process is reviewed. Gasification of low-rank, high-ash coals with respect to gasification temperatures, conversion rates, and syngas quality is also discussed. The main HTW design steps required for an industrial-scale design are presented. Special attention is given to the process modelling, including global thermodynamic calculation as well as detailed CFD-based simulation of a reacting fluidized bed. Three-dimensional numerical results of the HTW process are also provided and discussed."

A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Namakwa Sands, ilmenite, DC arc furnace, titania slag, pig iron Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilisation and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be the vehicle to drive performance in the short term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development.

"Mining companies strive to increase and maintain production, while simultaneously remaining competitive in the global economy. Furthermore, they must ensure workers’ safety and maintain good safety records. The use of virtual reality (VR) facilitates the development of tools and systems for various purposes that can improve knowledge and understanding of the work environment. VR is a rapidly growing technology that uses the ever-increasing power of computing to simulate real-world and imaginary environments and situations with a high degree of realism and interaction. The availability of 3D modelling tools and simulation programming engines that work effectively with a mid-range desktop PC and standard 3D graphics card, make VR technology viable and attractive for mainstream training applications. The design, development, and implementation of interactive VR training systems is proposed as an innovative approach to augment safety training. However, in order to assess the impact of such VR training systems it is of particular importance to determine the effectiveness of the design of such systems. This article proposes an evaluation framework for this vital purpose. This framework comprises criteria to assess VR training systems, specifically relating to usability, instructional design, VR systems design, and mining industry context-specific aspects. Although the framework was developed as an evaluation tool to assess effectiveness of the design of such systems, it can equally well be used as a set of design principles to inform the design of VR training systems for mining. IntroductionMining in South Africa has been the main driving force behind the history and development of Africa’s richest and most advanced economy (Coka, 2012). The South African mining industry is frequently criticised for its poor safety record and high fatality rate (Stoddard and Skweyiya, 2016). Inadequate or insufficient training is often cited as a root cause of accidents (Van Wyk and De Villiers, 2009; Tichon and Burgess-Limerick, 2011). Virtual reality (VR) is a rapidly growing technology that utilizes the ever-increasing power of computing to simulate real-world and imaginary environments and situations with a high degree of realism and interaction (Webber-Youngman and Van Wyk, 2013). VR is currently being used or investigated as a training solution in a variety of industries. VR technology has developed rapidly and costs have fallen to levels where it can now be considered for mainstream training applications. The availability of 3D modelling tools and simulation programming engines that work effectively with a mid-range desktop PC and a standard 3D graphics card, make VR even more attractive to mine training centres (Van Wyk and De Villiers, 2009)."

This paper presents an overview of work conducted over several years to investigate the continuous stope closure profiles recorded in tabular excavations and the use of this data as a hazard indicator. In spite of the brittle nature of the rock, measurements in gold mines and intermediate depth platinum mines revealed a significant time-dependent closure component. Various approaches to simulate the time-dependent closure have been investigated. Viscoelastic theory is able to simulate the time-dependent closure behaviour, but there are subtle problems with the use of this theory as it cannot simulate the failure processes in the rock. To overcome these problems, continuum and discontinuum elasto-viscoplastic models were developed by the authors. Discontinuum models have the advantage of being able to simulate the creep behaviour of prominent discontinuities. Development of these models has led to useful insights into rock mass deformation and has made the numerical simulation of parameters, such as rate of mining, possible for the first time. A number of practical applications for the mining industry have been developed from this study. Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. The additive property of dispersion variances was found experimentally by D.G. Krige using data from the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand. In this property, called ?Krige?s relationship?, the dispersion of a small unit, v, within the deposit is equal to the sum of the dispersion of v within a bigger unit, V, and the dispersion of these units, V, within the deposit, D. It is known that the variance of the grades decreases as the support increases, the so-called volume-variance relationship. To analyse volume-variance and Krige?s relationship, the methodology herein proposed combines blending piles and geostatistical simulation to simulate the in situ and the pile grade variability. Variability reduction in large piles is based on the volume-variance relationship, i.e. the larger the support, the smaller the variability (assuming perfect mix). Based on a pre-defined mining sequence to select the blocks that will form each pile for each simulated block model, the statistical fluctuation of the grades derived from real piles can be simulated. Using this methodology, one can evaluate within a certain time period the expected grade variability for various pile sizes, and also calculate the Krige?s relationship between the small blocks and the piles of different sizes. A real case study using a large Brazilian iron ore deposit illustrates the methodology and demonstrates the validity of the results.

Research into the mechanisation of ore winning from the very narrow reefs characteristic of South African gold mines has been conducted from as early as 1964 through the Chamber of Mines Research Organisation (COMRO) but with limited success. However, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has recently re-evaluated the potential for the mechanisation for the narrow tabular gold mines. It has been determined that there are approximately 22 000 tonnes of gold left in-situ in channel widths of less than 500 mm in thickness. The extraction of ore from such reefs requires a complete paradigm shift in that the current mining cycle (drilling, blasting, cleaning and supporting) is not feasible since such a stoping width would not allow the workers entry into the stope. Consequently, a non-entry form of mining is required. With this target in mind CSIR has invested in a project called the Nederburg Miner which seeks to identify new technologies for drilling, rock breaking, cleaning, and materials handling, the application of which will enable non-entry mining of very narrow ore bodies. The intention is to develop a fully automated system that will not require human involvement at the stope face. The outcomes of research into this proposed system will not only extend the life of South African gold mines but will also enhance South Africa's reputation for excellence in mining research. This paper presents the new technologies under consideration and potential methods for their application into an integrated non-entry mining system.

"For new mining projects or for medium- to long-term areas of existing mines, drilling data is invariably on a relatively large grid. Direct estimates for selective mining units (SMUs), and also for much larger block units, will then be smoothed due to the information effects and the high error variance.The difficulty is that ultimately, during mining, selection will be done on the basis of SMUs on the final close-spaced data grid (grade control), which will then be available, i.e. the actual selection will be more efficient, with fewer misclassifications. However, this ultimate mining position is unknown at the project feasibility stage and therefore has to be estimated. This estimation is required because any cash flow calculations made on the basis of the smoothed estimates will obviously misrepresent the overall economic value of the project, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the average grade of the orebody. Similarly, unsmoothed estimates will be conditionally biased and will give even worse results, particularly in local areas of short- and medium-term planning or mining.This paper presents a case study of indirect post-processing and proportional modelling of recoverable resources designed for mediumand long-term mine planning at the Gold Fields’ Tarkwa Mine in Ghana. The case study compares long-term indirect recoverable mineral resource estimates based on typical widely spaced feasibility data to the corresponding production grade control model as well as the mine production. The paper also proposes certain critical regression slope and kriging efficiency control limits to avoid inefficient medium- to longterm recoverable estimates, and highlights the danger of accepting block estimates that have a slope of regression less than 0.5."

Many factors govern the size and shape of an open pit, and these must be properly understood and used in the short and long-term planning of any open pit and quarrying operation. The importance of each factor will depend on the particular project, but the geology, grade, and localization of mineralization, extent of the deposit, topography, property boundaries, production rates, bench height, pit slopes, road grades, mining costs, and cut-off grades are key elements of open pits. This paper discusses the work done on the above parameters in order to provide an optimal production plan for a limestone quarry and clay deposits that provide raw material for a cement factory in Turkey. Soke cement factory has 1 400 000 tons of clinker capacity and is located on the western part of Turkey, in the province of Aydin. It is one of the largest facilities in the cement sector in terms of capacity, and it has a large advantage over facilities because the location of the factory was chosen to obtain the raw materials necessary for cement production within very short distances. However, the old reserves that supplied limestone to the factory had been reported to have run out, and therefore new limestone reserves in the same province have been investigated over the years by experienced geologists. From surface samples, high MgO content was reported in the neighbourhood of limestone formations with high dolomatization; hence, other alternatives were taken into consideration. One alternative with better chemical composition had been found 24 km away from the factory, but the haulage cost of limestone was unacceptable for the factory due to high diesel prices in Turkey. The maximum allowable MgO content in the pre-mix feed to a rotating furnace is 2.5% MgO content in pre-mix from both limestone and clay deposits. The clay deposits belonging to the cement factory have higher MgO content than the limestone deposit, and therefore this quality problem was taken into consideration first, instead of transporting material from 24 km away. This study gives the details of work done to evaluate both the clay and limestone deposits, statistical analysis performed on core samples taken from drill holes, mathematical modelling for both sites, and most importantly of all, in-pit homogenization work that reduced the pre-mix MgO content. As a result of this study, the profitable limestone quantity has been improved in order to serve the cement factory over a projected 25 additional years without using any material from the close deposit.

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

The extraction of iron and lead from their oxides with a volatile organic ligand such as acetylacetone in the gas phase offers potential advantages of lower energy consumption, recycling of the extractant, recovery of pure metals, and a reduced environmental impact compared with conventional extraction processes. The influence of reaction temperature, ligand flow rate, and metal oxide levels on the extraction and rates of reaction of iron and lead from single metal oxide (synthetic haematite (Fe2O3) and synthetic massicot (PbO)) systems in a fluidized bed was studied. It was found that at the investigated acetylacetone flow rates, the influence of mass transfer was limited, but that the reaction suffered from reactant starvation. When the metal load increased the effect of starvation on the rate of reaction also increased. The reaction kinetics increased with an increase in temperature for both systems. At low metal oxide concentrations more that 80 per cent of the iron and lead could be extracted from their respective metal oxides after only four hours.

Catastrophic rock slope failures have caused destructive tsunamis in Norwegian fjords. At the Åknes rock slope the tsunami generating potential is large due to the potential large volume involved in a possible catastrophic failure. Widening of the upper crack has been recorded since 1986, and in recent years, a quite extensive investigation and monitorin campaign has been conducted. Data from some of these investigations are presented and analysed with respect to a preliminary evaluation of the stability of the slope.

Particular attention was to be paid to the transportation of men and materials and to the broken rock and ventilation capacity of the shaft. This project is an in-depth evaluation of the logistic capacity of the sub-decline system at Turffontein Shaft in order to determine by how much production can be increased in this area to replace tonnages from the vertical shaft area, where ore reserves are rapidly becoming depleted.

Mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in Mpumalanga(upstream of Loskop Dam) is at times discharged into local streams, resulting in local acidification and regional salination of surface water resources. Pollution of surface water can be prevented by collecting and treating mine water to a quality where it could be re-used without restriction (Cleanwater 2020 Initiative). Mine water in the Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to only 4,6% of the total water usage, but contributes 78,4% of the sulphate load. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. A number of alternative desalination treatment technologies were investigated (subsequent to gypsum crystallization pre-treatment) where treated mine water must meet more stringent quality requirements (e.g. less than 200 mg/lSO4). The capital cost of these processes varied between R4 million/(Ml/d) and R10million/(Ml/d) and the running cost between R2/m3and R5/m3. Water usage in the Upper Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to 947 Ml/d (including the power stations), and will increase to an estimated 1385 Ml/d by 2020. The additional water demand by2020 (438 Ml/d) will have to be supplied by importation from neighbouring catchments, and more efficient utilization of the local water resources, including excess mine water. Various levels of treatment are required to make mine water suitable for the following potential applications (acceptable treated water sulphate concentration shown in brackets): irrigation (2000 mg/l), coal processing plant (1000 mg/l), general industrial use (500 mg/l), discharge to public streams (500 mg/l), potable use (200 mg/l) and cooling water in power stations (20 to 40 mg/l). The following two options, or a combination thereof, can be considered for management of excess mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment: ?Collection and treatment of excess mine water to a quality suitable for selected urban and industrial applications (Option A) ?Collection and treatment of mine water to a quality suitable for irrigation (Option B). The estimated capital and running cost for Option A amounts to R528.5 million and R55.7 million/year, respectively, compared with R68,2 million and R11,9 million/year for Option B. It is recommended that Option B be investigated for implementation in the short to medium-term. Option B was selected due to cost benefits and the initial favourable results obtained by a joint Water Research Commission and Coal Industry initiative where mine water is used for irrigation. Option A may become feasible in the long-term to ensure maximum environ-mental protection and reduced treatment cost as a result of anticipated technological improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.
