In extracting base metals from ore bodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environmental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur is emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coal mines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Pyroserv has developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful byproduct of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulfate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

Statistical summary of the mineral industry world production, exports and imports 1964-1969 Published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, London, on behalf of the Institute of Geological Sciences (1971) The Statistical Summary contains a wealth of care fully garnered information on the production, exports and imports of the principal minerals and mineral products throughout the world for the period 1964-1969, and it should therefore be of particular interest to economic geologists and others concerned with marketing and selling minerals. In view of the intractable nature of the source data it is quite an achievement to have published figures for 1969 so expeditiously. On picking up the Summary this reviewer instinctively compared it with the Annual Yearbook published by the United States Department of the Interior. The Yearbooks have been issued annually since 1882, and today each consists of a set of three separate books containing five volumes. Apart from abundant statistics on the domestic and international mineral industries, the Yearbooks are known for their perspicacious reviews and articles on a host of different facets of the world's minerals industry. Physically the Summary is a much slimmer publication than the Yearbook, and it contains no commentary whatsoever other than occasional footnotes. The principal contents are a series of tables showing production, exports and imports of fifty-nine of the world's more important minerals and mineral products. Each table shows the weight of the material produced or traded, by countries, with figures for each of the six years in adjoining columns. In some cases (e.g. diamonds) values in British currency are quoted in addition to weights. Most of the data have been abstracted from national reports and returns, although in some instances estimates are quoted where national sources are silent--as for example the production of platinum in South Africa. One wonders in passing if any useful purpose is served by the continued suppression of this particular figure. The four South African producers must surely be able to estimate each other's production fairly accurately by now, and one imagines that the national export figures can likewise be synthesised. This reviewer has two minor criticisms of an otherwise praiseworthy publication. Firstly it seems an unnecessary anachronism to perpetuate the split between 'Commonwealth' and 'Other' countries-the split can have little practical significance today. Secondly, what is one to make of the statement that the 1966-1969 figures for exports from Rhodesia of chrome ore and copper, to take two examples only, are 'not available'? It seems improbable that no estimates of these figures have been made since the imposition of sanctions, and inevitably one suspects that the figures have been excluded on policy grounds. Hopefully this problem will have been solved when the next Summary is published. M.J.M. South Africa, land of Challenge by Maurice Tyack France Interpresse, 323 pages, price R18-00. Is South Africa God's richest acre? In its mineral wealth it certainly is, but what of the many other complex overlays of emotions, traditions and racial problems? South Africa, Land of Challenge, provides the background. This is reported to be the first comprehensive documentary work of its kind on South Africa. It is a handsome volume measuring 12ft by 9f', is illustrated by at least 600 photographs of South Africa, more than half of which are in colour, and contains 21 original maps and charts. The book covers the full spectrum of South Africa's very existence, its geography, pre-history, its customs, countryside, natural resources and its cities. The more controversial categories are thoroughly discussed, the people, their policies and politics. Mr Tyack is eminently qualified to write on South Africa, being the author of over 20 books on other African countries and having spent more than three years of research, in the field, in South African archives and also in various libraries and museums, in preparation for this book. The book claims to be free of any party political bias and appears to be an honest attempt at a factual survey. However, a work of this magnitude will undoubtedly leave an impression on the reader and the tone of this book is decidedly patriotic. This is a useful reference work on South Africa that most South Africans will be proud to own. J.P.H. Ergonomics and physical environmental factors This publication by I.L.O. of a symposium in Rome in September 1968 has much useful information for the mining industry in regard to the health and productivity of its labour force. The first subject dealt with is mechanical vibrations. From this section it is clear that men who drive, for many hours each day, vehicles which vibrate in the 6 Hz range are subject to serious physiological and psychological effects. The former may show as changes to the vertebral column (which has a resonance in the 4-5 Hz range). The circulatory system is adversely effected by values in the 6-10 Hz range and the vision is impaired at between 40-100 Hz. Less definite knowledge exists of the effects of vibration on the hand-arm system from mechanical drills etc, although Raynauds disease of the blood vessels of the hand and degenerative diseases of the elbow and shoulder joints occur in men using drills which vibrate, respectively, in the higher and low frequency ranges. In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. Reviewer: R. H. Eric This edition is organized in twenty-three chapters, and contains exactly 500 pages including three appendices and an index. The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

"SynopsisSouth Africa recently announced a resurgence in its commercial nuclear power programme. The implications for the development of the necessary high-level manpower within South Africa’s tertiary educational system and its national research and development (R&D) capacity in materials science and engineering, as well as in other engineering disciplines, are placed into perspective. An organized national process of developing this manpower by moving away from the previously high-risk and costly ’large programmes’ to rather a selection of ‘small and better’ research projects and a redefinition of what constitutes ‘nuclear materials’ are proposed as parts of this strategy.IntroductionSince 2008, and more particularly in 2014/2015, South Africa has woken up to the fact that significant steps need to be taken to ensure sufficient electricity generating capacity for the future, even beyond the coal-fired stations at Medupi and Kusile currently under construction. It is, therefore, encouraging to see some active large-scale wind farms in the Eastern Cape near Jeffrey’s Bay, in the Couga area, and others in the Western Cape already in operation. In addition, many solar energy projects are also progressing from the small localized scale to larger programmes in the Northern Cape, which may contribute some capacity on a national basis. South Africa needs to tap into its renewable resources of wind and solar much more, but will these projects solve the country’s long-term industrial needs? Unfortunately not. One cannot run mines and trains on solar cells. Industry needs reliable baseload capacity, and with very limited easily accessible hydrocapacity this leaves really only coal, possibly natural gas, and nuclear power as options. South Africa’s current over-reliance of about 90% on coal–fired power, however, places it in an internationally vulnerable position, and diversification into a more equitable energy mix should be a national priority for the medium to long term. South Africa cannot significant climate change confronting the human race, as the IPCC cautioned in 2013, and will have to adjust its future energy reliance to a more balanced combination of sources."

Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

Variography was introduced by Dr. Pierre Gy to monitor a process, in the sixties. Later on, Francis Pitard extended this concept, building a complete system of variographic controls for different applications. Nevertheless, the existence of information about its use as a way to effectively control plants has been limited. There are infinite areas where variography and chronostatistics can be used. In this paper, two different cases related to gold and silver recovery, through well known but complex metallurgical routes are studied. The use of effective management of process variability software (EMPV) has shown to be a suitable solution to clarify problems at the plant and, consequently, a solution to the encountered problems has been proposed. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in depth way. Once the ore has been extracted from the mine, sampling is necessary at each sequence of the metallurgical process involved. As a first example, leaching of the ore with cyanide in agitated tanks is another case of a complex metallurgy. The aim of the process is to know about residual values in the tailings in order to optimize process. As a second example, leaching of gold and silver in ore heaps, has to be optimized in terms of time, reagents consumption and, of course, in predicting a reasonable recovery. This last issue appears to be crucial. After cyanide leaching at the heaps, a carbon in columns process is involved, where there are a series of carbon loaded columns that are submitted to a dynamic process of load and unload, to finally deliver an enriched solution to the precious metal electrowinning plant. In both cases, variography has been a good approach to show metallurgists ways to improve the operation.

1 Initiating Systems ? a definition An initiation system is a combination of explosive devices and component accessories specifically designed to convey a signal and initiate an explosive charge from a safe distance. In the use of explosives, the initiating system performs the functions of transmission and control of the firing signal to each explosive charge. As functional groups, initiating systems may be considered as: Starters Those which provide the initial signal to start the blasting process. Surface systems Products which provide transmission of the starter signal and delay timing (if any) across the surface of the blast outside the blast hole. In-hole systems Products which provide the signal transmission, delay timing (if any) and the initial explosives energy in the blast hole.1 2 Different types of Initiating Systems The initiation systems commonly used in Sub Saharan Africa are: ? Detonating cord and detonating relay systems ? Capped fuse and igniter cord systems ? Shock tube non electric systems ? Electric systems ? Electronic detonators 3 Overview of Electronic Delay Detonator Technology Conventional detonators use pyrotechnic delay elements and the variation of the actual delay periods is at best approximately 1% the nominal delay. The lack of guaranteed precision common to all pyrotechnic systems enhances the likelihood of negative environmental blasting effects.3 For example, take a 500 ms in hole delay. In conventional detonators this means that 95 % of shots fire within 10 ms of the mean. i.e. a window of 20 ms. Taking a fixed interval between shots of 25 ms, with a range of ± 3 ms, a very ragged firing pattern could be expected which in practice would result in non uniform fragmentation.

Cappadocia is not only a region of Turkey with historical and touristic importance. During the cutting and processing of volcanic tuff, quarries in this region release large amounts of tuff into the environment that is viewed as waste. The release of this waste constitutes an economic loss and contributes to environmental pollution. However, through experimentation with deformation, weight per unit of volume, water absorption, uniaxial compression strength, modulus of elasticity, and point load strength index, volcanic tuff and marble dust composite materials can be produced for use in the building sector. In this study it was observed that, as the percentage of volcanic tuff dust in the mixture increased, the water absorption rate of the material increased, and uniaxial compression strength and point load strength decreased. The produced composite samples used in this study were kept for a predetermined number of times per day, and no deformation in the surface characteristics of the materials was observed. In a statistical parameter analysis, averages, variances, standard deviations, coefficients of variation, and skewness coefficients were calculated. Covariance changes between experimental parameters were also determined. In this study, two types of volcanic tuff dust, that is, yellow and red, were produced during the production of tuff-marble dust composite material. When the percentage of either type of volcanic tuff dust was increased, an increase in water absorption was observed. It was also observed that when the percentage of volcanic tuff dust was increased, uniaxial compressive strength and point load strength decreased. Furthermore, the physical and mechanical properties of the materials obtained by mixing different colored tuff powders and marble powders in different proportions were evaluated using statistical parameter analysis.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

As a Demand Side Management (DSM) Project, money was granted for the procurement and installation of a 3-Chamber Pipe Feeder System (3-CPFS) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Moab Khotsong Mine in the Vaal River Area, Orkney. The first submission was done to ESKOM in December 2002 and the contract was signed in September 2006 at a cost of R 57-million with an envisaged reduction in power of 7 Megawatt per month based on a 90% utilization factor. The project was finally commissioned in December 2008. The technology is not new, but the intent of the paper is to share with others the experience gained by using the technology in a deep-level mine in order to reduce overall power consumption.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10 ? 15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates.
