This Bureau of Mines study surveys the current state of technology and the various research efforts that have been undertaken to dewater the dilute phosphatic clays generated in the production of phosphate rock. The research described includes early dewatering experiments, fundamental studies of clays and of flocculation, and minor dewatering techniques such as freeze-thaw methods, the ANDCO process, moving screens, sand wick, crust development, and overburden pumping. Some methods that are currently being evaluated are described. They include the Estech sand-clay mix process using the Enviro-Clear thickener, sand-clay sandwiching, dredge mix, dredge process, and the sand-spray process. Developing technology for dewatering phosphatic clays also is described, including the Bureau of Mines rotary trommel method and the Gardinier process.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in the work of obtaining data regarding the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils from the various producing fields of the, United" States. Preliminary reports have been published that cover the eastern fields* and the' Rocky Mountain districts.** Since the appearance of these, reports: it has been suggested that certain additional data. I regarding the samples would be of practical value. It was believed that a knowledge of the viscosity of crude oil was desirable, particularly in connection with the design and operation of pipe lines. In accordance with this suggestion, the authors have made viscosity tests upon as many of the samples of the two series as wore still available for examination. Determinations were made at temperatures of 70° and 100°F., and in addition the oils were Subjected to the A. S. T M, pour-test*** to as certain the lowest temperatures at which they remain in a fluid condition.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output.? It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Bureau of Mines research on the production of phthalic anhydride by vapor phase oxidation of hydrocarbons began at Morgantown, W. Va., in October 1960. For these preliminary studies, a known solution containing naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene was used. In another series of tests, pure naphthalene was dissolved in different solvents. A series of investigations was conducted with the neutral oil fraction (210° to 270° C) of a low-temperature tar obtained from the Texas Power and Light Company's low-temperature carbonization unit. The neutral oil fraction was first dealkylated, and then the product was distilled into 210° to 250° C and 250° to 270° C fractions. These two fractions were then subjected to catalytic vapor phase oxidation. Although a number of catalysts was tested, most of the experiments were made using 9 percent vanadium pentoxide on inert alumina. The activity of this catalyst did not decrease after 162 hours at 1,030° F. Studies were conducted over a temperature range from 610° to 1,180° F. An operating temperature of 1,030° F yielded 47.50 percent of phthalic anhydride from a synthetic mixture of naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene. The highest yield (84.40 percent phthalic anhydride) was obtained with naphthalene dissolved in toluene and also with naphthalene dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone. With a 210° to 250° C fraction the highest yield of phthalic anhydride obtained was 12.32 percent at a temperature of 900° F, and, with a 250° to 270° C fraction, it was 15.80 percent at a temperature of 875° F.

This report describes bench-scale studies and pilot-plant development of the Bureau of Mines process for roasting iron ores with a ferrous scrap reductant, such as discarded automobile hulks, to yield artificial magnetite. Quality magnetic concentrates containing about 66 percent iron and 6 percent silica with iron recoveries of over 90 percent were obtained after roasting fine-grained oxidized or nonmagnetic taconite with unburned, sheared automobile hulks in a rotary kiln. The relatively complete oxidation of the lighter gage metal in the automobile during roasting resulted in a metallic byproduct consisting of the unconsumed heavier gage metal scrap. This residual or tailored scrap is potentially useful as heavy melting stock and has more value than the original automobile hulk.

Thick coal seams are common in the Western United States, Many seams are over 50 it thick (some are over 200 ft thick) and are too deep to extract using surface methods. Currently, such deposits are developed using standard "eastern" mining methods which only extract a few feet of total seam thickness, often rendering the remaining coal unminable with current technology. Novel methods that increase thick-seam recovery have been developed and are currently being used in Europe. These methods--high-face single-pass and multislice longwall, longwall caving, and hydraulic mining--have great potential for use in the United States. Successful use of these methods is an objective of the Bureau of Mines. Their use requires, among other things, a full evaluation of geologic features common to thick coals. The objective of this report is to present and summarize those features that will affect the introduction of the methods into thick-seam mines in the Western United States. The geologic elements delineated are three-dimensional configuration of the seam, cleat development, joints and fractures, roof and floor lithology, and faulting.

A satisfactory mean: of beneficiating a Brazilian phosphate rock was developed in a mineral-dressing-research study by the Bureau of Mines. High-grade concentrates well ever the specified minimum grade of 70 percent tricalcium phosphate, were produced, with goad recoveries by agglomerate tabling and flotation. A lower gads but usable secondary product was recovered by sedimentation of the minus-200-mesh fraction of the ore. The ore wan representative of an extensive deposit recently discovered near Recife in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, which will be exploited in a plant planned to eventually produce at the rate of 500,000 tons of concentrate annually. Although Brazil has been reported to Lave a substantial reserve of phosphate rock,3/ the country has never been more than a small producer of this commodity. From 1945 to 1950 the highest production of phosphate rock attained in Brazil amounted to 10,421 tons. Production in 1949, the most recent year for which figures are available, was 4,553 tons.4/

"The underlying principle of the storage battery was discovered within the memory of many still living, hence storage-battery locomotives, which were made possible by this discovery, represent a still more recent development. The Journal of the Franklin Institute for December, 1883, gives an account of the building of an electrical omnibus by The Electrical Storage Battery Co., of Millwall, London, This, if not the first, was among the first attempts to, use the storage battery as the source of energy for locomotion.During the period 1888 to 1893 occasional attempts were made to apply this idea practically, but not much was achieved along useful lines.. The progress during the next, 15 years was slow, and little success was achieved. Therefore, the last two decades may be considered the successful development period of the storage-battery locomotive.In coal mining, the application of the storage-battery locomotive is chiefly in gathering service in competition with animal or cable-reel locomotives. The locomotive delivers empty cars to the rooms or working places where the coal is being mined and hauls the loaded cars from the rooms. The length of haul depends upon the distance of, the junction point from the active workings of the mine. As a rule the haulage from the junction point to the foot of the shaft or bottom of the slope is done by trolley locomotives, but in some instances where the grades permit this main-line haulage work it: performed by storage-battery locomotives.As the place storage-battery locomotives occupy with respect to safe haulage in gassy mines appears to be misunderstood, it is the purpose of this paper to clarify this point.Those who originally designed storage-battery locomotives had no thought of safety in mind and it is just as well that they did not, as these early types of storage-battery locomotives with open controller open motor, open rheostats, flimsy headlights, and crude wiring were very dangerous electrically and not at' all suitable for use in a gassy mine. These locomotives, however, were placed in mines in which open lights were permitted and they replaced considerable animal haulage. Later they were gradually introduced in mines where closed lights were used, but in most cases these mines were not extremely gassy."

As part of its mission to assure an adequate domestic supply of metals essential to the Nation's welfare, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated a particle agglomeration technique as a means for improving the flow of leaching solution through heaps of clayey or finely crushed, low-grade, gold-silver ores. Bench-and pilot-scale experiments showed that the percolation rate of cyanide leaching solution was markedly enhanced by mixing the ore with a portland cement binder, moistening the mixture, and mechanically agglomerating and aging the feed prior to heap building and leaching. The rate of gold and silver recovery markedly increased because of the increased, uniform percolation of leaching solution through the agglomerated feed. The use of concentrated cyanide solution instead of water during the agglomeration procedure decreased the leaching time required to obtain maximum recovery. Results of bench-and pilot-scale experiments are discussed.

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. This report, Volume I of the seven-volume Final Report on the U. S. Bureau of Mines research contract no. G0254030 titled Application of a Total System Surface Mine Simulator to Coal Stripping with the Pennsylvania State University provides an executive summary of the purpose and scope, objectives and results of the research. The remaining volumes of the Final Report, listed below, describe in detail model development, input and output documentation and the three case studies. Under the project, an existing surface mine simulator, Open-pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) was modified and extended for application to surf ace coal mining. In addition, two equipment selection models, and a cost model were also developed. The four periods of test operation described in Report of Investigations 5219 indicated that planer mining of phosphate rock was feasible. Corrective measures proposed for design deficiencies indicated in test 4 had to be evaluated, however; and, before the attempt to design a prototype production model, it was considered advisable to test the original machine under more severe operating conditions. Planer A was modified, therefore, during the latter half of 1955, and one additional period of experimental operation was conducted in the Anderson mine of the Montana Phosphate Products Company near Garrison, Mont., during the first 4 months of 1956. Test 5 was made in a stope, where the phosphate bed had been offset in a number of places by minor faults. Considerable difficulty was found in negotiating the irregularities caused by these faults, and productionwise the test was not as successful as some of the previous ones. Information obtained, however, was valuable in designing model B.

Abstract-Underground mines are typically extensive labyrinths that employ many people working over an area of many square miles; exten¬sive analysis of mine-communications systems has identified specific problem areas, in particular the excessive times required to locate key personnel underground, the inadequacy of existing phone systems in terms of capacity and privacy, and the inability to communicate with men on the move with wireless communications, as is taken for granted on the surface. A review is presented of the existing systems, the prob¬lem definition, and the various approaches that have been or are being investigated to solve these problems. Ear Mountain is an isolated mountain mass that rises abruptly from the coastal plain on the northwest shore of the Seward Peninsula. Geologically it resembles the more accessible Brooks Mountain and Cape Mountain areas to the southwest, being composed of a granitic core surrounded and partly capped by metamorphosed sediments. The occurrence of lode- and placer-tin deposits in this area has been known since the early 1900's, when the Seward Peninsula region was prospected extensively for both gold and tin. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the tin deposits in the Ear Mountain area during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons. The objectives were to delimit the areas in which tin minerals occur, as a guide to future prospecting, and to determine the amount of tin in the known prospects. Work by the Bureau of Mines included both placer and lode sampling.

"INTRODUCTION A layer of soot on the heating surface of a boiler decreases efficiency because it increases resistance to the flow of heat, with the result that the heat transfer to the water is lower and the temperature of the flue higher than they would be if the surface remained clean. The percentage of reduction in heat transfer depends on the position and area of the sooted. The percentage of reduction in heat transfer depends on the position and area of the sooted surfaces, the thickness of the most, until the percentage of the total heat absorbed by those surfaces when clean; thus it will vary with the type of boiler and in particular with the ratio of the area of the convection heating surface to the total area. Medium-size and large boilers usually are equipped with soot blowers, and tests have been published giving the increase in efficiency resulting from removal of the soot. Fuel savings up to,8 percent have been reported, but 4 to 5 percent is probably more conservatives. However, these savings may not be due wholly to a reduction the thermal resistance of the surfaces but may be due partly to improvement in the combustion because of better draft or more uniform flow of the gases. In addition, the deposits on the surface of boilers include as a clinker, and as the size of the boiler and the rate of burning increase very little or none will be soot.There are no corresponding test data on small boilers operated at low rates of burning. In stall boilers, deposits are much thicker, and it might be expected that the reduction in efficiency would be greater; in fact, statements have appeared suggesting that the decrease may be as high as 50 percent. This investigation was undertaken because the Bureau frequently receives requests for authoritative information on the effect of soot in small and other heating boilers."

Lead-silver deposits in the Omilak area, on the western slopes of the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons, as a part of the U.S. Department of Interior's continuing program for the development of Alaska's resources. The Omilak area was the scene of early day prospecting and mining activity. The Omilak mine, which operated from 1881 to 1890, was the second producing lode mine in Alaska; the first was a small gold mine near Sitka. Several hundred tons of ore were produced at the Omilak mina; as an indication of grade, 41 tons shipped from Omilak in 1889 contained 75 percent lead and 142 ounces of silver per ton. A prominent, nearby occurrence of lead-silver minerals, found but not explored during this period, has since become known as the Foster prospect. Subsequent exploration of this prospect revealed an abundance of massive galena occurring on an outcrop and as float scattered through limestone talus. Evidence of lead deposition, together with the generally high silver content of lead ores previously shipped from the district, indicated that deposits might be found which would be commercially valuable even in this remote area. To investigate the possibility, the Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance of the Omilak area and did bulldozer trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling at the roster prospect. Data resulting from the investigation are presented in detail in this report and are summarized in the following paragraphs.

In broadest overview, a substantial part of the world's mineral industry in 1990 registered small gains over its 1989 performance, but traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely global production, trade, and consumption levels, failed to mirror these gains. This was because of the sharp downturns in the mineral industry activity in the U.S.S.R. and the former centrally planned economy nations of eastern Europe. These downturns in this one geographic area had influences on almost all traditional statistical series, in some cases simply significantly reducing growth, in other cases providing for a global downturn, in almost all cases despite considerably brighter outlooks based on activities in other world areas. To be sure, the U.S.S.R. and eastern Europe were not the only places on the planet suffering problems of one type or another in 1990 that impacted on minerals industry activity, but with the acquisition of information presently available, it seemed almost assured that the difficulties of these economies in transition will be the most difficult of problems to resolve in the long run. It certainly appeared that the legacy of the half century or more of economic central planning will be a decade or more of very difficult adjustments, and a number of these will greatly affect not only the minerals industry of these transition countries, but also the rest of the globe's mineral industry as well.

Workers in coal preparation plants, where vibrating screens are significant noise sources, are often exposed to sound levels exceeding 90 dB(A). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a major coal company, and a vibrating screen manufacturer conducted a cooperative study of vibrating screen noise. Rubber isolators reduced sound levels by 1 dB. Urethane screen panels did not reduce sound levels in this case. Drive noise was determined to be the dominant noise source on the screen. Damped side plates reduced vibration levels on the screen sides by 1 to 7 dB(A). Detailed results of the study are presented.

During the past, six, years, the Bureau of Mines has made and. published several hundred analyses of typical crude oils and 'has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crudes. This system is presented here with. It is apparently equate for classifying crude oils into four main groups and has also been found very convenient in studying the geological relationships between crude oils, and the probable refinery yields of valuable products from them. Crude petroleum is morn to be a very complex substance. An analytical statement of its properties must, therefore, consist of two distinct parts, - first, the report of the results of the determinations made by the analyst in the laboratory, - second, the proper arrangement, classification and interpretation of these results so that the analysis, as a mole, will indicate the meaning- and the relative- importance of the essential characteristics of the oil.
