This publication comprises tables listing friction loss for a flexible, spiral-reinforced circular ventilation tubing system. The tables were constructed with the following parameters: a friction factor of 62 X 10-10, 10-foot sections of tubing ranging in total length from 100 to 550 feet, air quantities ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 cfm, and one to four 90° bends in the tubing. The aim of this publication is to improve ventilation tubing analysis and to provide a method of proper fan selection.

"An active list of permissible explosives was published in September 1935 as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 32S6, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. Blasting Devices Approved. Prior to July 31, 1935."" This list included 154 brand names,Changes in the list that have been authorized subsequently placed 24 addi¬tional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a re¬sult of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Eight permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present active permissible list contains 170 brand names. An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

Native asphalt was produced in 1980 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output decreased 22% in 1980 to 1.25 million tons while value decreased 2% to $25.0 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert, Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In 1981, the combined value of these commodities accounted for about $11.6 million,2 over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially above the 1980 level. Mining bated on gold production was decreasing, and employment in the industry was declining. The better grade deposits in the one active mine were worked out, and only another 10 years' production at current rates was estimated to remain. While the high world gold price of 1979-80 led to intensive exploration, there has been little sum.

Samples of low-grade oxide manganese ores were procured from two southern Utah properties by examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines during an investigation of manganese mineral deposits of continental United States. A 2-ton lot of ore was obtained from the Blackbird group of mining claims in Paiute County, 11 miles southeast of Marysvale, Utah. The deposit was described as an intrusive sheet or sill of altered brecciated rhyolite cemented together by manganese oxide minerals. A 2-ton sample from the Black John property, situated 32 miles northeast of Kanab, Kane County, Utah, was taken from open cuts on the vein. The blanket-type vein deposit consisted of nodules and streaks of manganese imbedded in compact gray clay.

The Bureau of Mines through contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., obtained gram per gram data of products formed on thermal oxidative degradation of selected compositions, both under dynamic and static conditions. Four broad classes of materials were studied! Polyvinyl chloride compositions, neoprene compositions, rigid urethane foams, and variously treated woods. Whenever possible, comparisons between pure components and composites were attempted. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to gain understanding of the processes occurring and to explore the feasibility of using these analyses as a method of material identification. The toxic products detected and quantitated included HC1, H2S, CO, S02, CS2,COS, HCOOH, CH3COOH, formaldehyde, acrolein, C 6H6, chloroprene, chloroethanol, benzyl chloride, aniline, and furfural.

The modified perchloric--EDTA method devised by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of copper in high-grade samples gives results that are more precise and more accurate than those from the classical sulfuric-iodometric method. Although the perchloric--EDTA method is more costly than the conventional method, the savings in time alone largely offsets this difference. Specifically, the modifications wade in the more conventional procedure comprise (1) use of perchloric acid instead of sulfuric acid for dissolution of copper minerals, (2) precipitation of copper as copper sulfide from dilute perchloric acid solution, (3) wet oxidation and dissolution of the precipitated copper sulfide, (4) use of larger amounts of indicator than those employed in the Schwarzenbach method of titrating low-tenor copper solutions with disodium ethylenedinitri10-tetraacetate and murexide indicator, and (5) use of refrigeration to partially stabilize aqueous solutions of the indicator.

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

"Research has been conducted during the past year on a study to correlate respirable coal mine dust characteristics with worker positions and coal seams. The first characteristic of respirable coal mine dust which has been addressed in the correlation study is respirable dust mass concentration. In fulfillment of this objective, two mines operating in different coal seams have been selected for respirable dust mass sampling on both longwall panels and continuous mining sections. At present, sampling has been completed on the longwall panel operating in the first mine, and one half of the planned sampling has been accomplished on the continuous mining section.The first mine sampled is operating in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The average mining height is approximately 78"" with an average of 8"" of bottom shale being mined. The mine is primarily a longwall mine, and continuous mining machines are used to support the longwall.Figure 1 shows the layout of the longwall panel which was sampled. Intake air is coursed via the track heading up to the headgate area. The air splits at the headgate. Approximately 20,000-30,000 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) is used to ventilate the longwall face and about 5,000-10,000 CFM is routed down the belt entry. Substantial leakage across the gob was noted during the sampling period. An average of 1800 CFM per 100 feet of face leaked through the shields into the gob from #1 shield to #112 shield. A substantial amount of leakage also occurred between the #1 shield and the solid rib of the headgate development panel. The path of the air used to ventilate the panel is shown with arrows in Figure 1. Direction of air flow was opposite to the coal moving direction on the armored face conveyor.A double-drum ranging shearer is used on the face to cut a 30-inch web of coal. Normal practice is to cut from the tailgate to headgate with the leading drum raised and the tail drum lowered for cutting bottom. After reaching the headgate, the shearer is reversed and both drums are lowered for a clean-up pass. The last 40 feet of face on the tailgate is cut on the clean-up pass.The shearer is equipped with 2 banks of 4 water sprays each and 2 large sprays on the headgate end and 1 bank of 4 sprays on the tailgate end. Additionally, sprays are located above bits on the cutting drums. Actual cutting speed was approximately 14-18 feet per minute, depending on conditions.The cross sectional area for air flow on the face was approximately 60 square feet before a pass was mined and 80 square feet after a pass was mined but before the shields were advanced. The cross sectional area at the shearer was about 35 square feet.The condition of both the tailgate and headgate of the panel was good with no signs of significant roof problems. The roof conditions along the face during the sampling period were variable. At times, as much as 3 feet of drawslate fell from the roof for a span of as much as 40 shields. Generally, however, relatively local areas of falling roof were encoun-tered, usually limited to a 10-20 shield span when appearing.Ten days were spent gathering respirable dust samples on the longwall panel. Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) sampling units equipped with 10-mm nylon cyclones, pre-weighed MSA PVC filters, and constant-flow DuPont pumps were used to obtain thesamples. The pumps were calibrated at a 2 liters-per-minute flow rate. The 10-mm cyclone was selected for classifying total dust into the desired respirable fraction in order to obtain ""legally defined"" respirable dust samples for detailed physical characterization."

Cost Data Library The data retained in the Cost Data Library is of a semi¬permanent nature in that it is held in storage for immediate use with the program although its contents may require periodic evaluation to maintain it in a current status. The library is composed of six arrays containing both technical and cost data. The following description of the library input system provides the information necessary to maintain an active storage file. Array POWERA: FORMAT (8F10.0) - contains the step groupings of the power rate schedule for power cost computations. Four input data cards are required to fill this storage area. One potential peaceful application of nuclear explosives is stimulating the production of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons from essentially nonproductive deposits of petroleum, natural gas, oil shale, and tar sands. Within the United States the appreciable difference between producible proved reserves and ultimate reserves and resources of hydrocarbon deposits is of such magnitude that much petroleum, natural gas, shale oil, and bitumen will not be produced unless significant technological progress is made in production techniques. The shattering effect of contained nuclear explosives and, to a lesser extent, the heat produced, have been considered as stimulative forces when the thickness, depth, and nature of such deposits permit considering the use of nuclear devices. Mechanical production problems would be less in an oil or gas reservoir than in an oil-shale or tar-sands deposit. Also, tar-sands resources in the United States may not be adequate to warrant serious consideration of applying nuclear-explosives stimulation. Gas reservoirs should present the least- radioactive-contamination problem. The technical feasibility of using nuclear explosives cannot be evaluated fully at present. Additional information is needed on the effects of pressure, heat, and radioactivity on the solids and fluids of hydrocarbon deposits, the nature and extent of induced fractures in different rock media, and the possibility of isolating and confining or removing radioactive contaminants. Final technical feasibility can only be determined by a field test. If technical feasibility is established, economic feasibility will depend upon the comparative cost of producing hydrocarbons by nuclear explosives and by conventional means. It is probable that an economic comparison would favor nuclear stimulation only where devices of relatively high yield could be used practicably and safely.

Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

"SUMMARYThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous information circular, by Rudolf Kudlich, now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier manuscript.INTRODUCTIONThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart, giving shades of gray by which the density of columns of smoke rising from stacks may be compared, was developed by a Professor Ringelmann of Paris. Maximilian Ringelmann, born in 1861, was professor of agricultural engineering at l'Institute National Agronomique and Director de la Station d'Essais de Machines in Paris in 1888, and held those positions for many years thereafter.The chart apparently was introduced into the United States by William Kent in an article published in ""Engineering News"" of November 11, 1897, with a comment that he had learned of it in a private communication from a Bryan Donkin of London. It was said to have come into somewhat extensive use in Europe by that time. Kent proposed in 1899 that it be accepted as the standard measure of smoke density in the standard code for power-plant testing that was being formulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The Ringelmann Chart was used by the engineers of the Technologic Branch of the Federal Geological Survey (which later formed the nucleus of the present Bureau of Mines) in their studies of smokeless combustion beginning at St. Louis in 1904, and by 1910 had been recognized officially in the smoke ordinance for Boston passed by the Massachusetts Legislature."

The objective of this research was to (1) Further develop cyanobacteria mats' for metal-tolerance and cold-tolerance, (2) test them for durability in the field environment and (3) assess them for metal sequestering potential with actual and simulated field samples. Results show that mats performed well In the field and effectively sequestered metals from actual and simulated field samples. Metal uptake from Iron Mountain Hine samples was for Ins 87%, Cu and Cd 99%, Initial concentrations (mg/L) were Zn = 3,250, Cu , 279, Cd = 28. In solutions simulating the Gulf Tunnel drainage, Zn and Mn were effectively removed by mats immobilized on glass wool. Effluent water, after treatment, generally had a Ph of 7 .5-8.5. Al though the final metal concentrations in the mats 'harvested from the decontaminated water were only 1% or less, the actual mechanism of metal deposit was probably a mat-mediated alteration of the environmental conditions causing the metals to deposit outside the mat as oxides or carbonates. Bioflocculents, released by the mats, were likely involved in the metal-removal process.
