To identify the most successful methods now in use for controlling respirable dust in longwall mines using double-drum shearers. Approach Conduct dust surveys at six longwall mining sections that use double-drum shearers and are regularly in compliance with the Federal Respirable Dust Standard, to identify effective dust control techniques. The selection of mine sites was based on recommendations provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Instantaneous and short-term gravimetric instrumentation make it possible to isolate longwall dust sources and to determine the effectiveness of dust control techniques. (These procedures were developed by the Bureau of Mines, and are described in detail in Technology News Bulletins 134 and 135.) Production levels, and seam heights at each of the six longwall sections were: 53", 700 tps; 60", 800 tps; 72", 1000 tps; 79", 1500 tps; 84", 2000 tps; 96", 1500 tps. Survey Results Three effective dust control techniques were identified. 1. Shearer Operators on Intake Side of Lead Drum-At all mines surveyed, an important factor in controlling dust exposures at the shearer is the use of a cut ting sequence that allows the shearer operators to work most of the time on the intake air side of the lead drum. "An active list of permissible explosives was published in September 1935 as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 32S6, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. Blasting Devices Approved. Prior to July 31, 1935."" This list included 154 brand names,Changes in the list that have been authorized subsequently placed 24 addi¬tional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a re¬sult of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Eight permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present active permissible list contains 170 brand names. An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

Native asphalt was produced in 1980 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output decreased 22% in 1980 to 1.25 million tons while value decreased 2% to $25.0 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert, Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

Principal mineral products in the Dominion of Fiji were gold, silver, pit and quarry construction materials, and cement. In 1981, the combined value of these commodities accounted for about $11.6 million,2 over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products increased substantially above the 1980 level. Mining bated on gold production was decreasing, and employment in the industry was declining. The better grade deposits in the one active mine were worked out, and only another 10 years' production at current rates was estimated to remain. While the high world gold price of 1979-80 led to intensive exploration, there has been little sum.

Samples of low-grade oxide manganese ores were procured from two southern Utah properties by examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines during an investigation of manganese mineral deposits of continental United States. A 2-ton lot of ore was obtained from the Blackbird group of mining claims in Paiute County, 11 miles southeast of Marysvale, Utah. The deposit was described as an intrusive sheet or sill of altered brecciated rhyolite cemented together by manganese oxide minerals. A 2-ton sample from the Black John property, situated 32 miles northeast of Kanab, Kane County, Utah, was taken from open cuts on the vein. The blanket-type vein deposit consisted of nodules and streaks of manganese imbedded in compact gray clay.

One potential peaceful application of nuclear explosives is stimulating the production of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons from essentially nonproductive deposits of petroleum, natural gas, oil shale, and tar sands. Within the United States the appreciable difference between producible proved reserves and ultimate reserves and resources of hydrocarbon deposits is of such magnitude that much petroleum, natural gas, shale oil, and bitumen will not be produced unless significant technological progress is made in production techniques. The shattering effect of contained nuclear explosives and, to a lesser extent, the heat produced, have been considered as stimulative forces when the thickness, depth, and nature of such deposits permit considering the use of nuclear devices. Mechanical production problems would be less in an oil or gas reservoir than in an oil-shale or tar-sands deposit. Also, tar-sands resources in the United States may not be adequate to warrant serious consideration of applying nuclear-explosives stimulation. Gas reservoirs should present the least- radioactive-contamination problem. The technical feasibility of using nuclear explosives cannot be evaluated fully at present. Additional information is needed on the effects of pressure, heat, and radioactivity on the solids and fluids of hydrocarbon deposits, the nature and extent of induced fractures in different rock media, and the possibility of isolating and confining or removing radioactive contaminants. Final technical feasibility can only be determined by a field test. If technical feasibility is established, economic feasibility will depend upon the comparative cost of producing hydrocarbons by nuclear explosives and by conventional means. It is probable that an economic comparison would favor nuclear stimulation only where devices of relatively high yield could be used practicably and safely.

The Bureau of Mines through contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., obtained gram per gram data of products formed on thermal oxidative degradation of selected compositions, both under dynamic and static conditions. Four broad classes of materials were studied! Polyvinyl chloride compositions, neoprene compositions, rigid urethane foams, and variously treated woods. Whenever possible, comparisons between pure components and composites were attempted. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to gain understanding of the processes occurring and to explore the feasibility of using these analyses as a method of material identification. The toxic products detected and quantitated included HC1, H2S, CO, S02, CS2,COS, HCOOH, CH3COOH, formaldehyde, acrolein, C 6H6, chloroprene, chloroethanol, benzyl chloride, aniline, and furfural.

The modified perchloric--EDTA method devised by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of copper in high-grade samples gives results that are more precise and more accurate than those from the classical sulfuric-iodometric method. Although the perchloric--EDTA method is more costly than the conventional method, the savings in time alone largely offsets this difference. Specifically, the modifications wade in the more conventional procedure comprise (1) use of perchloric acid instead of sulfuric acid for dissolution of copper minerals, (2) precipitation of copper as copper sulfide from dilute perchloric acid solution, (3) wet oxidation and dissolution of the precipitated copper sulfide, (4) use of larger amounts of indicator than those employed in the Schwarzenbach method of titrating low-tenor copper solutions with disodium ethylenedinitri10-tetraacetate and murexide indicator, and (5) use of refrigeration to partially stabilize aqueous solutions of the indicator.

"Research has been conducted during the past year on a study to correlate respirable coal mine dust characteristics with worker positions and coal seams. The first characteristic of respirable coal mine dust which has been addressed in the correlation study is respirable dust mass concentration. In fulfillment of this objective, two mines operating in different coal seams have been selected for respirable dust mass sampling on both longwall panels and continuous mining sections. At present, sampling has been completed on the longwall panel operating in the first mine, and one half of the planned sampling has been accomplished on the continuous mining section.The first mine sampled is operating in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The average mining height is approximately 78"" with an average of 8"" of bottom shale being mined. The mine is primarily a longwall mine, and continuous mining machines are used to support the longwall.Figure 1 shows the layout of the longwall panel which was sampled. Intake air is coursed via the track heading up to the headgate area. The air splits at the headgate. Approximately 20,000-30,000 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) is used to ventilate the longwall face and about 5,000-10,000 CFM is routed down the belt entry. Substantial leakage across the gob was noted during the sampling period. An average of 1800 CFM per 100 feet of face leaked through the shields into the gob from #1 shield to #112 shield. A substantial amount of leakage also occurred between the #1 shield and the solid rib of the headgate development panel. The path of the air used to ventilate the panel is shown with arrows in Figure 1. Direction of air flow was opposite to the coal moving direction on the armored face conveyor.A double-drum ranging shearer is used on the face to cut a 30-inch web of coal. Normal practice is to cut from the tailgate to headgate with the leading drum raised and the tail drum lowered for cutting bottom. After reaching the headgate, the shearer is reversed and both drums are lowered for a clean-up pass. The last 40 feet of face on the tailgate is cut on the clean-up pass.The shearer is equipped with 2 banks of 4 water sprays each and 2 large sprays on the headgate end and 1 bank of 4 sprays on the tailgate end. Additionally, sprays are located above bits on the cutting drums. Actual cutting speed was approximately 14-18 feet per minute, depending on conditions.The cross sectional area for air flow on the face was approximately 60 square feet before a pass was mined and 80 square feet after a pass was mined but before the shields were advanced. The cross sectional area at the shearer was about 35 square feet.The condition of both the tailgate and headgate of the panel was good with no signs of significant roof problems. The roof conditions along the face during the sampling period were variable. At times, as much as 3 feet of drawslate fell from the roof for a span of as much as 40 shields. Generally, however, relatively local areas of falling roof were encoun-tered, usually limited to a 10-20 shield span when appearing.Ten days were spent gathering respirable dust samples on the longwall panel. Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) sampling units equipped with 10-mm nylon cyclones, pre-weighed MSA PVC filters, and constant-flow DuPont pumps were used to obtain thesamples. The pumps were calibrated at a 2 liters-per-minute flow rate. The 10-mm cyclone was selected for classifying total dust into the desired respirable fraction in order to obtain ""legally defined"" respirable dust samples for detailed physical characterization."

Cost Data Library The data retained in the Cost Data Library is of a semi¬permanent nature in that it is held in storage for immediate use with the program although its contents may require periodic evaluation to maintain it in a current status. The library is composed of six arrays containing both technical and cost data. The following description of the library input system provides the information necessary to maintain an active storage file. Many inquiries are received by the United States Bureau of Mines for the names of elementary books on geology, mineralogy, methods of identifying minerals, prospecting, and similar subjects. In response to this demand the following brief bibliography has been prepared. As many of the inquiries are received from those who have limited technical knowledge of the subjects involved, the bibliography includes the simpler texts which present the subjects in nontechnical language. Other texts contain glossaries which define the technical terms used. A short note following the title indicates the character of each book, the number of pages, and the price. Thus, elementary mineralogists or geologists, prospectors, mineral collectors, nature students, or travellers may select the texts that best suit their requirements and their capabilities. To supply the needs of more advanced students, quite a number of the standard texts used in schools and colleges are included in a second group. A short list of books on economic geology and mineralogy has also been added.

The objective of this research was to (1) Further develop cyanobacteria mats' for metal-tolerance and cold-tolerance, (2) test them for durability in the field environment and (3) assess them for metal sequestering potential with actual and simulated field samples. Results show that mats performed well In the field and effectively sequestered metals from actual and simulated field samples. Metal uptake from Iron Mountain Hine samples was for Ins 87%, Cu and Cd 99%, Initial concentrations (mg/L) were Zn = 3,250, Cu , 279, Cd = 28. In solutions simulating the Gulf Tunnel drainage, Zn and Mn were effectively removed by mats immobilized on glass wool. Effluent water, after treatment, generally had a Ph of 7 .5-8.5. Al though the final metal concentrations in the mats 'harvested from the decontaminated water were only 1% or less, the actual mechanism of metal deposit was probably a mat-mediated alteration of the environmental conditions causing the metals to deposit outside the mat as oxides or carbonates. Bioflocculents, released by the mats, were likely involved in the metal-removal process.

Approximate equations were used to compute the radiant heating of float coal dust by approaching flames for various combinations of particle size, dust path length (flame travel distance), flame temperature, dust concentration, flame speed, and flame length. The computed values of degree of radiant heating and flame travel distance for preheating the coal dust should be useful for estimating the increased fire hazard of different coal dust-flame parameters. Some findings relating to coal mine disaster control are-- 1. Coal dust clouds cannot be preheated to ignition temperatures by flame radiation alone when deflagration speeds are greater than about 10 m/sec. Thus it appears unlikely that radiation alone will cause flames propagating in dust clouds to accelerate to detonation velocities. 2. Small particles in the radiation flame zone caused by burnout and soot formation increase the degree of preheat significantly. 3. The concentration of float coal dust (radii = 3 to 40 microns) for maximum radiant heating usually peaks in the range 50 to 200 mg/liter of air.

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

The investment involved in any communication system represents a considerable sum. Even though it is desirable that the system work properly each and every time it is called into use, some failures are bound to occur. Most failures, however, and especially those that occur most frequently, are due to poor installation techniques. An extra hour spent at an installation site can save many maintenance trips and many frustrating hours of system troubleshooting. Typical faults likely to cause communication outrage are Pager phone systems Poor splices aggravated by corrosion. Strain relief not provided. Drip loop not provided. Incorrect branch connections. Overloading the circuit. Poor battery connections. Improper wire size or type. Lightning strikes. Improper placement of wire runs. Carrier phones Mounting transceiver near load resistors or other sources of heat. Tracks not electrically bonded. Cable abrasion due to poor mounting location. Disconnected battery. Poor mechanical installation. Each installation should be well planned. After an installation is completed, the technician should ask the question, "What can go wrong with this unit or line?" Remember the adage, "Whatever can go wrong, will." Preventive measures taken during installation will pay off in the long run. 6.2 Pager Phone Installation The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery-operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is usually two-wire, nonpolarized, and operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. 6.2.1 Mounting Pager phones are designed to be mounted on an upright support at the desired location. For convenience, the phone should be mounted 5 feet above the floor where there is no obstruction to using the handset or removing the cabinet front cover for servicing or battery replacement. In low-coal situations, a suitable height for installation should be selected convenient to the normal operator's position at the site selected. About 12 inches of free space on each side of the phone should be provided for cabinet access. The phone should be protected against direct exposure to dripping water and should not be allowed to rest in a puddle of water. The mounting location should be convenient to a work location and have a safe, unobstructed area for a worker to stand and use the phone. The phone must be in a location where the worker will not be in the path of moving vehicles or falling debris. Each telephone is normally well insulated, but it is still good practice to provide an insulating mat or dry planking for the user to stand on.
