Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. 3.1 Criteria for Selection A coal deposit has the following major characteristics: i) wide distribution as a flat-lying, thin, bedded deposit ii) stable nature of its major components and ranking characteristics such as carbon, heat content, volatile components, specific gravity, etc. iii) number of constituents and characteristics which under present regulations limit usage, such as content of ash, sulphur, sodium, etc. iv) effect of characteristics of over- and under- lying host rocks including porosity and permeability, lithology and general geology v) low value, high bulk nature. Because of the relative stability of its major components and its low unit price, coal does not require the same attention to detail as do the metal deposits. However, new regulations combined with social pressures make it imperative that more accurate information be made available concerning factors which affect the quality of coal and which may have an adverse effect on the environment when the coal is mined or burnt. The method selected for the evaluation of a coal deposit must, therefore, be flexible and sensitive enough to be used to interpolate stable parameters whose general distribution character-

It was at first a chronological list; however, suggestions submitted by its users prompted a format change to show publications under broad, general topics. Author and subject indexes were developed, becoming more detailed with each new edition. This present list supersedes the ones compiled in 1949, 1952, and 1957, and several supplements, which were aside available to the public by the Library Of the Bureau?s Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center. The unofficial field publication came to be widely known nail in considerable demand by those who are primarily interested in the Bureau's publications on petroleum and natural gas so that it became, desirable to have it published as an Information Circular. Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. "As the result of the work of an efficient safety organization, the Midwest Refining Co. at its various operations and particularly in the Salt Creek field has been able to show a definite accident reduction. Lost-time accidents during the past year have been reduced to a small number as compared with previous years, and infection cases have been almost eliminated.The accident-prevention work of the Midwest Refining Co. is in charge of the department of industrial relations, with a director as the administrative head; two safety men handle the work directly at Midwest, Wyo. A competent medical staff with a well-equipped hospital at Midwest is also an important factor in the prompt and proper treatment of injured persons when an employee is injured, he is given first-aid and then taken to the hospital with minimum delay.About 1,450 persons are employed in the 4 departments (production, gas, pipe lines, and electrical) and in the 34 districts of the Midwest Refining Co. The work at Midwest spreads over a considerable area, and new drilling operations, pipe work, and similar activities require the services of many small gangs of workers. Complete supervision, of each job, whether shall or large, is possible through the large number of superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers employed; thus, there are 20 superintendents, 78 foremen, and 115 gang pushers. The largest number of men under any one toss is approximately 15, and it is probable that much of the good safety record is due to this intensive supervision. These company officials, including the gang pushers, have been impressed with the idea that it is their duty to see that the men under them do not get hurt; the responsibility of instructing new employees in safety practices is placed directly upon them. Monthly meetings of the field officials, including superintendents, foremen, and gang pushers, and as far as possible the men, of each district are held with the safety engineer. Both officials and men are encouraged to bring up for discussion any practice or proposals looking to the changing of any conditions that will"

"INTRODUCTION The Segerstorm-Heizer property was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in May and June 1942 and Mach 1943. As a result of these examination, the Nevada State Department of Highways,constructed 9.3 miles of graveled road under the mine access-road program. A magnetometer survey was made by the Geophysical Division 4/ in October 1943, and as a result the Mining Branch set up and conducted a core-drilling,project. Work on the deposit started May 24, 1944, and was suspended on July 31, 1944, but was resumed on December 4, 1944 and continued until completion on March 27, 1945.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as it, primary objective the more effective resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch Lowell B. The Bureau of Mines studied the potential for recovering marketable barite concentrates that meet oil well drilling-mud specifications from barite waste pond materials. The study was conducted as part of the Bureau's research program to conserve domestic mineral resources by advancing mineral recycling technology. The samples, which were obtained from Georgia, Nevada, Missouri, and Illinois, varied widely in character, particle size, and barite content. The samples were treated with sodium silicate and sodium cetyl-stearyl sulfate and then floated. The flotation flow sheet was modified to reject barren coarse and/or slime fractions from some of the samples, and one feed sample had to be scrubbed prior to flotation to remove residual flotation reagents. The cleaned concentrates had BaS04 contents ranging from 95.0 to 96.9 percent, while recovering 81.2 to 95.9 percent of the barite in the feed. The specific gravity of each concentrate exceeded the specification of 4.2. The removal of the flotation reagents from the flotation concentrate was not investigated.

Laboratory tests were conducted to study removal of magnesium impurities from western phosphate rock concentrates by selective leaching. The systems evaluated included leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, with ammonium sulfate, and in an aqueous medium with sulfur dioxide gas. Set standards for the magnesium impurity level of phosphate rock concentrates are not available, but industrial practice has indicated that magnesium in excess of 0.3 percent MgO causes problems in phosphoric acid manufacture. Removal of magnesium was accomplished with all three systems. With dilute H2S04 the magnesium level was reduced to less than 0.1 percent MgO with an accompanying P205 loss of 6 percent. Magnesium oxide levels from 0.3 to 0.2 percent were obtainable with ammonium sulfate. However, the system requires concentrate roasting at temperatures of 900° C or higher, heated pulps (100° C), and large quantities of ammonium sulfate. Selective leaching was obtained using S02 gas in an aqueous concentrate slurry. Magnesium oxide content was reduced to less than 0.1 percent without loss of phosphate.

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. Trachea removed from pathogen-free rats were maintained as organ cultures and used to study the effects of coal dust exposure on the synthesis of mucin. The high molecular weight isotopically labeled (3H-glucosamine, 14Cleucine or 35S-sulfate) mucin could be purified by gel filtration, treatment with testicular hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography, delipidation and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. To examine effect of coal dust on mucin production, groups of explant cultures were exposed to media containing coal dust at 100 µg per ml every 2 days for 2 weeks while control cultures were treated with media without dust. Analysis of the spent culture media showed that treatment with dust markedly decreased the production of nondialysable glycoproteins as well as hyaluronidase-resistant acid-precipitable fraction consisting mainly of mucin. Since the synthesis of protein was not affected to the same extent the decrease in mucin production is not entirely due to cell death. In separate experiments rats were subjected to in vivo coal dust exposure in inhalation chambers and tracheae of these and control rats were removed for explant cultures. The incorporation of precursor isotopes into mucin by these explant cultures are being examined. This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.

This paper discusses a practical method for enhancing the performance of mining work crews. The method, described as the Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM), seeks to define performance variability within similar tasks of an underground work crew. Key components of the WCPM include: (I) job definition through task analyses; (2) the ranking of job elements by perceived cost consequence; (3) observational techniques to establish performance baselines; and (4) cost linkages between adherence to task procedures and measures of consequence for noncompliance. The components of this model emphasize a reliance on learning from a veteran work force and using that information to reinvest in strategies to enhance safety and efficiency. These strategies are not limited to technologic efforts but include consideration of the so-called "soft-skill technologies" aimed at reducing variability in individual performance and at effecting a continuous improvement in overall system effectiveness.

This project investigates the behavior of blast waves from the detonation of high explosives in an underground mine. A series of explosive tests was conducted in the underground and surface facilities at the Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the potentially dangerous effects of blast waves produced by open shooting, blown out holes, or accidental detonations of explosives. Shots of C4 and TNT were fired at the dead end of a 6 ft high by 20 ft wide entry, at the intersection of two entries, and on the surface. C4 and TNT were chosen for this research because they exhibit very consistent performance. Behavior of the blast wave was evaluated through recording of the pressure as a function of distance from the explosive detonation. For both explosives, C4 and TNT, peak pressure decay with travel down the entry was inversely proportional to distance to the 0.9 power. When comparing pressure measurements at 200 versus 100 feet from the detonation; at 200 feet the pressure would be 1/2 0.9 or 54 percent of that measured at 100 feet. By comparison, peak pressure for a surface shot exhibits a decay with distance to the -1.6 power, yielding a pressure at 200 feet 1/2 16 or 33 percent of that measured at 100 feet. This result confirms that the blast wave from detonation of an explosive in an underground mine maintains its force for a greater distance than would be the case on the surface. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a system for casting unique, slotted steel armor by modifying the conventional expendable pattern casting (EPC) process that is normally used for making aluminum castings. Three innovations were added to the EPC process to make the successful adaptation: (1) Vacuum was applied to sand molds, (2) continuous narrow-necked feeding systems were used to permit the casting of thin walls, and (3) fixtures were designed to prevent pattern damage and to hold critical casting tolerances, Potential problems and defects are described.

Three species of chemosynthetic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria have been isolated from the leaching waters of copper mining areas. These species are: The sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus concretivorus, the iron-oxidizing Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, and a sulfur- and iron-oxidizing bacterium closely resembling Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, INTRODUCTION Among several suggested new processes for treating marginal ores in the United States, none is more intriguing than the possibility of extracting metals from low-grade materials by the action of microorganisms One phase of a Federal Bureau of Mines investigation toward developing such a procedure was to isolate and identify specific chemosynthetic iron and sulfur. oxidizing autotrophic bacteria native to certain domestic copper deposits where leaching is practiced. The bacteria or microorganisms considered important to this investigation are those capable of producing solutions of ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Solutions of this type are excellent solvents for some copper minerals By establishing the presence of these bacteria at certain copper-leaching areas, strength would be given to a theory that microbial activity is partly responsible for the oxidation that takes place at these areas. Their presence also advances possibilities for controlled use of microbial action in metal extraction processes. Leathen4/ has demonstrated that one of the chemosynthetic iron-oxidizing bacteria, Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, can oxidize 200 parts per million of ferrous iron to the ferric state in 3 days,

Methods for converting WOCl4 to WCle were investigated in small-scale, laboratory apparatus to devise a method for preparing pure WCls suitable for conversion to tungsten metal. Chlorine, COCI2, and CCI4, alone and in combination with various forms of carbon, were tested as chlorinating agents at various temperatures. More than 95 percent conversion of WOCl4 to WCls was achieved with all reagents at 8000 C in the presence of activated carbon. Only CCl4 maintained its effectiveness in the absence of carbon at 800° C. The effectiveness of carbon was found to be related directly to its surface area.

A relatively simple and inexpensive encapsulated hydraulic device has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to facilitate study of coal bumps , and to measure pressure changes in a coalbed as it is subjected to roof loading during mining . Construction of the device and application techniques are described . Preliminary feasibility tests in the laboratory and field indicate that the device responds satisfactorily to pressure changes in coal created by roof loading .

This paper presents an approach for representing and analyzing random motions and hazardous events in a simulated three-dimensional workplace, providing designers and analysts with a new technique for evaluating operator-machine interaction hazards in virtual environments. Technical data in this paper is based upon a project striving to reduce workers' risks from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. The project's methodology includes human factors design considerations, ergonomic modeling and simulation tools, laboratory validation, and collaboration with a mining equipment manufacturer. Hazardous conditions can be analyzed in virtual environments using collision detection. By simulating an operator's random behavior and machine's appendage velocity, researchers can accurately identify hazards, and use that information to form safe design parameters for mining equipment. Analysts must be discerning with the model and not read more from the databases than what the simulation model was designed to deliver. Simulations provided an interesting approach to data gathering in that there was no need for live subjects and logistics - test sites and costs associated with experiments-became insignificant. Collisions versus speed, operators' size, and risk behaviors proved the versatility found in the data obtained from the model. Preliminary results show that response time significantly affects the number of collisions experienced by the virtual subject. Also simulation data suggests that more mishaps occur with hand-on-boom-arm risk behavior.

Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities over the past few decades. Although the structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health performed an evaluation to determine to what extent building types could impact respirable dust and noise levels. This report discusses the evaluation of three different types of product sizing silica sand structures: a masonry design, a steel-sided design, and an open structure design. The data obtained in this study indicate that the open structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint compared to the other two structures. The open structure design should also be beneficial from a cost standpoint because of lower material and construction costs. Companies and design engineers should consider this open design when building new mineral processing facilities in climates where it could be applicable. Some companies may also want to consider modifying existing structures with a more open design to further reduce dust and noise levels. As the trend continues in lowering allowable dust levels for federal health standards in the U.S. mining industry, the open structure design may be an approach for some companies to consider for their operations.
