The Bureau of Mines investigated the typical physical and chemical properties of coal waste materials from the western part of the United States. The results are compared, in so far as possible, with the properties of waste materials from eastern coal operations. The authors found a disparity of mines and preparation plants among western U.S. coal operations and dissimilarities with typical operations in the East. The relatively cleaner product from the predominance of surface mining and the occurrence of thicker seams in the West reduces the amount of coal preparation required and the size of the waste piles. Because of the abundance of land available for waste disposal, many of the piles are low and extended over large areas. New concepts relating statistical shear strength data to liquifaction potential are presented. The somewhat limited data indicates that western coal sludge is coarser with higher permeabilities and shear strengths than the eastern deposits.

Pitch from low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal was hydrogenated at cracking conditions in a continuous bench-scale unit to produce low-molecular-weight oils and tar acids. The pitch contained 15.6 pct benzene-insoluble material, 4.0 pct hexane-soluble oil, and 80.4 pct asphaltene by weight. At 475° C, 7,500 psig, and 1.5 hours residence time, hydrogenation products, based on the weight of pitch, were about 36 pct oil boiling below 325° C, 24 pct hexane-soluble heavy oil, 17 pct asphaltene, 1 pct benzene insolubles, and 12 pct hydrocarbon gases. The yield of tar acids boiling below 250° C was 4.3 pct, and the yields of C6 to C8 paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics were each less than 1.0 pct. The yield of tar acids was within the range of yields obtained by hydrogenation or high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal (2 to 5 wt pct). Yields of oil boiling below 325° C increased with increased residence time or temperature. There was little or no effect of residence time on yields of alkali- soluble material which contained tar acids. Yields of hydro-carbon gases increased markedly with an increase in temperature from 475° to 500° C. Lowering the hydrogen pressure to 4,500 psig resulted in yields similar to those obtained at 7,500 psig.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the production of hydrogen cyanide by reacting powdered coal (minus 300 mesh) with ammonia at 1,250° C in a bench-scale study. Both metallic and ceramic reactors were used. Yields up to 0.7 cu ft of hydrogen cyanide per cubic foot of ammonia consumed r- obtained. The resulting ammonia conversion of about 75 volume-percent approximates conversion obtained commercially in processes utilizing natural gas and platinum catalysts. The coals that had higher volatile-matter contents gave the best yields of hydrogen cyanide. Allowing the coal to adsorb ammonia before reaction resulted in increased yields of hydrogen cyanide. Cost studies for a plant with a 40-million-pound-per-year capacity indi-cate that hydrogen cyanide can be profitably coproduced with carbon black, from coal and ammonia, at the current market price of hydrogen cyanide (11.5 cents/lb). These figures are based on heating the reactor electrically. If a cheaper heating method were devised the economics of the process would be more favorable.

During World War II , a critical shortage of domestic abrasive corundum developed . Late in 1944 , the shortage became so acute that it was deemed advisable to investigate certain low-grade corundum prospects in Madison and Gallatin Counties , Montana . The Gallatin , the Bozeman , and the Bear Trap deposits were the principal ones investigated . The Bear Trap deposit was examined by E. W. Newman and Robert S. O'Brien , engineers of the Bureau of Mines , in August 1944. Exploration was started in October 1944. Field work was completed late in the spring of 1945 . report presents the data obtained from the exploration .

The 31,880-acre Battle Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) was evaluated for mineral resources by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. No mining district is in the area, nor were any mines or claims recorded or found. Oil and gas leases, or lease applications, covered about half the area in early 1984. No known exploration has occurred. The entire WSA is covered with thick volcanic flows. Faults in these volcanic rocks may have provided conduits for mineralizing solutions emanating from the basement rocks; however, no evidence of mineral deposits was detected from rock samples collected along the faults. Reconnaissance samples from sand and gravel deposits yielded gold at less than $0.02/yd3. The source of the gold is assumed to be intrusive rocks or the Challis Volcanics about 20 miles north of the study area near the headwaters of Battle Creek. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the WSA. INTRODUCTION Mineral surveys of designated wilderness study areas (WSAs) 1/ are conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The USBM researches the mining and mineral exploration history and evaluates mines, prospects, and mineralized areas within or adjacent to WSAs. The USGS studies WSAs by regional geochemical and geophysical surveys and geological mapping. The USBM and the USGS investigations are summarized in a joint report used to help determine the suitability of WSAs for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this USBM study is to provide data for the President, Congress, BLM, and the general public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to help insure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at reasonable cost.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. "The diesel particulate matter (DPM), a constituent of the diesel engine exhausts, is known to be a potential carcinogen. 1- 3 Consequently, suitable methods to control/eliminate DPM have ·been under investigation in recent years. The DPM can be controlled by using fibrous ceramic traps. However, clogging of traps by DPM requires the impractical periodic trap replacement. Following the recent work by Garner and Dent,4,5 we are investigating the in situ use of microwaves to regenerate the ceramic traps, thereby eliminating the trap replacement step in this process. The use of microwaves instead of conventional heating for trap regeneration has the advantage of selective heating of the DPM instead of the trap, if the trap absorbs insignificant microwave power relative to the DPM. Also, the oxidation characteristics of the DPM are needed to understand fully this regeneration process.The rate of energy absorption P per unit volume of a sample is given byP = wE"" |Eo|2 • (1 )where w is the angular frequency, |E0|2 is the intensity of the microwave radiation, and E” is the imaginary part of the dielectric constant (E = E’ + iE”) . Thus measurements of E11 for DPM and ceramic trap material are needed to determine their capacities for microwave absorption. In this paper, we report these measurements carried out at · a frequency of 8.7 GHz. Following microwave absorption, the DPM is expected to oxidize. The oxidation characteristics of the DPM have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the evolved gases CO2 and CO and using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Finally, some information on the structure of carbon in DPM has emerged from the analysis of its x-ray diffraction spectra. Results of these experiments are reported in the following pages."

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of small amounts of copper in tungsten metal powder using the principle of solvent extraction has been developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The metallic sample is dissolved in hydrogen peroxide, tartaric acid added, the pH adjusted, and the excess peroxide destroyed by boiling. Copper is reduced to the cuprous state, and the reagent neocuproine (2,9-dimethy1-1,10-phenanthroline) is added to form a colored complex with the copper. This colored complex is then extracted into chloroform and the absorbance of the separated chloroform layer measured on a spectrophotometer. Copper contents as low as 1 p.p.m. (parts per million) can be determined. The method is limited to finely divided tungsten powder. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in developing more sensitive methods for the determination of trace impurities in high-purity tungsten prompted an investigation of the possibility of using solvent extraction-colorimetric methods. The organic reagents now commercially available make possible many extremely sensitive colorimetric methods for the determination of metallic ions. Extraction of the colored complex into a small volume of organic phase can be used to further increase sensitivity (4) .4/ This general approach has the added advantage that no special equipment beyond that normally found in an analytical laboratory is required.

"INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5,6./ results were given showing the amount of natural ventilation that takes place in manholes (capacities, 74.1 to 308 cubic feet) when the number of ventilation openings in the manhole cover ranged from no openings to a maximum of 4g.The tests warranted the general conclusion that the ventilation or air changes taking place in, a manhole increase as the area of openings in the cover of the manhole is increased, and are proportional (with the exception of a few erratic tests) to the area of the openings in the cover. The area of the openings was the chief factor that affected ventilation.The results did not show any marked change in rate of ventilation due to increased capacity or shape of manhole, when the results were expressed in terms of air changes per day versus area of ventilation openings in square inches per 100 cubic feet of manhole space.It was observed during these investigations that in certain tests that showed erratic results (that is, did not agree with the general average for a given set of test conditions) the wind velocity during the test period was also abnormal. In view of these findings it was decided to conduct a series of tests in which the wind velocity across the openings in the manhole cover could be controlled accurately to determine the effect of wind velocity on ventilation rate."

The Bohemia district, situated about 30 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, Oreg., in the Calapooia Range, has been the major producer of lead and zinc in Oregon. Sporadic production has been Maintained from the district since its early discovery about 1858. In 1942, a selective-flotation mill was built at the Champien mine, which operated for only a short time and was forced to close because of the war and lack of labor. The Champion mill reportedly has been operated as a custom mill for the treatment of ore from the Musick and Helena mines, located in the district sometime in the past. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on ore samples from the Musick and Helena Mines.

This paper describing the dredging operation of J. K. Davison & Bro. on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, Pa., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of dredging sand and gravel in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. "Tho the term “magnesite” is generally applied to the iron-bearing carbonate of magnesium, such as is found in Austria and Hungary, by some Austrian magnesite is referred to as bruennerite. The mineral bruennerite has become of commercial importance only in Austria. The important deposits are found in Styria, lower Austria and northern Hungary. It is of interest to know that the world's largest deposit of spathic iron ores or iron carbonate (FeCO3), occurs at Eisenerz, Styria, while the world's largest deposit of spathic bruennerite is found at Veitsch in the same province.The Styrian and lower Austrian deposits are located much nearer the Adriatic sea than are the deposits of northern Hungary; and it is from the former that most of the exported magnesite has come. They are located south-west of Vienna, and extend west from Semmering thru the Murz Valley to Tyrol. The chief deposits reckoning from east to west are those of Semmering, Veitsch, Breitenau, Trieben, Radenthein, and Dienten.The largest and most important deposit is that at Veitsch located near Mitterdorf, on the South Austrian railroad in the Murz Valley, Styria. Here the magnesite, which occurs in the form of a lens is quarried on the slope of a hill in a series of terraces about 50 feet apart. The entire work extends thru a vertical distance of 500 feet. The huge magnesite lens is nearly 4 of a mile long and over 1,000 feet in width, and probably extends to a considerable depth.The formation containing the magnesite extends eastward beyond Vienna into Northern Hungary where magnesite is quarried beyond Jolsva and Nyustya in the Gomor district. In spite of the remote location of these deposits as compared with those in Styria, magnesite was shipped from them before the war a distance of 360 miles to the port of Fiume for overseas shipments to other parts of Europe and to America.The average analysis showing the composition of the Austria-Hungary mineral is as follows:The magnesite occurs as lenticular masses in a belt of Carboniferous rocks consisting mainly of metamorphosed Shales, sandstones, conglomerates,,and limestone, It is grayish in color when fresh, and contains sufficient ferrous carbonate to blacken it when calcined. It turns brown owing to the oxide ion of the ferrous carbonate when exposed to the air. The quantity of carbonate of iron is ariable and different analyses show that it ranges up to 13 or 14%For the most part, only the sintered article has been imported into The United States. This material has achieved an enviable reputation for its uniformity both as to chemical and physical characteristics. The homogeneity of the sintered Austrian magnesite is doubtless due in part to the averaging effect of the different operations, such as crushing, dressing, sintering, And mixing, n effect which is not obtainable in mere hand samples.There is comparatively little variability in the sintered magnesite as marketed, and five analyses of this sintered magnesite as quoted by Cornu* are gas follows:"

The principle of explosive crushing depends upon the fact that an expandable substance contained within the pores of a solid body will disrupt such a body upon expansion. Such expansion may be obtained by the detonation of an explosive or by the sudden release of pressure of a superheated liquid. That this principle of disruption may be applied to minerals rests on the fact that cracks, cleavage planes, and pores exist in all mineral to an extent hardly conceived possible heretofore. Crushing by this method takes advantage of force applied from within the mineral rather than from forces applied from without. The application of a force from within would appear to be more effective. A consideration of the possibilities of such a method for crushing led to some experimental work of a preliminary nature, the results of which are embodied in this paper. No systematic program was followed in the work and the results are, therefore, not final and far from complete. The success attained so far, with the mediocre apparatus available seems to warrant a preliminary report, with the expressed hope that the work may be carried on as well-outline program covering such phases as have been impossible to investigate at this time.

The Bureau of Mines made a laboratory study of the amenability of anorthosite rock ( from the San Gabriel Mountains , Los Angeles County , Calif . ) to treatment by the lime soda sinter process for the extraction of alumina . The study was done under a cooperative agreement with the California Division of Mines and Geology . This report presents the results of the investigation , and it includes a review of the geology of the deposit ( 7 ) by Dr. Gordon B. Oakeshott . Interest in the recovery of alumina from submarginal aluminum silicate ores is stimulated by the fact that the domestic aluminum industry depends on imports of bauxite for its alumina requirements . Of the 8.0 million long dry tons of high - grade bauxite consumed in 1961 for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina , only 0.9 million long tons , or 11 percent , was mined in this country . During past years many organizations have carried out research programs to determine if alumina could be extracted economically from such domestic ores as clays ( 3 , 4 ) , anorthosite ( 8 ) , and other silicate sources . Successful alumina extraction is the ultimate objective of the Bureau of Mines program.

The Bureau of Mines, under an interagency agreement with the Department of Energy (DOE), investigated the feasibility of hardfacing the critical surfaces of valves and similar devices by chemical vapor deposition. The purpose of this research was to increase the wear resistance of these components for use in the abrasive and erosive environment of coal gasification units. Tungsten and molybdenum coatings were produced on nickel-plated carbon steels and stain-less steels by hydrogen reduction of the metal hexafluoride at 325° to 600° C. Titanium nitride coatings were produced on low-carbon steels by the reaction of titanium tetrachloride, hydrogen, and nitrogen at 1,000° C. Titanium carbonitride coatings were produced on low-carbon steels by the reaction of nitrogen, hydrogen, and methane at 900° C. Tungsten, molybdenum and titanium nitride coatings were formed on 6-, 10-, and l2-inch (0.15-, 0.25-, and 0.30-meter) ball valve seats for evaluation in the low-Btu coal gasification pilot plant at the Morgantown Energy Research Center, Morgantown, W. Va.

The objective of this investigation was to make a preliminary evaluation of titanium-vanadium-zirconium, alloys using room-temperature tensile properties as criteria for selecting promising alloys for future critical studies. Arc-melted titanium-vanadium-zirconium alloys ranging in composition from 5 to 20 a/o (atomic-percent) vanadium and 5 to 30 a/o zirconium, were investigated to evaluate hardness, hot workability, and room-temperature tensile properties. Metallographic examination coupled with hardness measurements were used to follow structural changes and aging response. Room-temperature tensile properties were criteria for evaluating mechanical and engineering properties of the alloys.

This paper, describing the mining practices and methods at the Black Rock mine, is one of a series of similar papers on mining methods in the various mines of the United States being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Black Rock mine is located in the northeast corner of the Butte district, about 3 miles from the center of the town of Butte, and is owned and operated by the Butte & Superior Mining Co.

The Hamme tungsten district is in Vance County, N. C., and Mecklenburg County, Va. Principal development has been in Vance County. The district is approximately 8 miles long by 1 mile wide and extends northeast-southwest. Its center is about 3 miles N. 65° W. of Townsville, N. C. The occurrence of tungsten in the district was first reported in 1901, but it was not until the Hamme brothers revived interest in the deposits in 1942 that commercial development began. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the war minerals program, began exploration and development of the district in June 1943 and completed it in December 1943. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the topography and geology and logging the drill cores. The program included mapping, trenching, sampling, diamond drilling, and analyses and beneficiation of ore samples, The principal ore mineral is hubnerite, which occurs in quartz veins within the schist and granite. The veins are generally lenticular along the strike and dip. About 50 quartz veins have been noted in the area, but many are barren or slightly mineralized.

To improve the economics of low-temperature carbonization of coal, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the upgrading of the product tar to marketable chemicals. This report describes experiments on the catalytic hydrodealkylation, followed by catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of the dealkylate to phthalic and maleic anhydrides, of mixed residues from the urea adduction of lignite-neutral oil fraction and on the catalytic thermal dealkylation of high-boiling tar acids. The hydrodealkylation experiments were conducted at pressures from 1,000 to 1,750 psig and at temperatures from 600° to 1,000° F. The oxidation was, in all cases, at atmospheric pressure and 9500 F. Maximum yield of maleic anhydride, based on the liquid feed to the hydrodealky1ation unit, was 12.2 percent at 750° F and 1,500 psig; that of phthalic anhydirde was 6.9 percent at 650° F and 1,500 psig. Maximum yield of combined anhydrides was 18.8 percent at 650° F and 1,500 psig. The non-dealkylated feed material, upon oxidation, yielded 8.9 percent and 3.8 percent maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, respectively.
