Although extensive research has been carried on to determine the factors affecting the explosibility of carbonaceous dusts, as much has been published on coal-dust and grain-dust explosions recent reports of loss of life and property in explosions if metal dusts emphasize the lack of information on the extent of the dust-explosion hazard in plants manufacturing or handling; aluminum, magnesium, or zinc powder, as well as other metal or mineral dusts. Early investigators believed that only the carbonaceous dusts formed explosive mixtures with air, and it was not until near the beginning of the present century that the explosibility of certain metal and mineral dusts was recognized generally. In his book, entitled "Fire and Explosion Risks," published in 1904, Von Schwartz called attention to such hazards. Many vague references to metallic-dust explosions are found in the literature, such as "a severe explosion of aluminum dust occurred in the Middle West several years ago," but very little information seems to be available on the extent of the hazard, the number of explosions, or the amount of loss caused by explosions in pants handling metallic or mineral dusts or powders other than those of a carbonaceous nature. A search of the records of insurance companies, rating bureaus, fire underwriters,and fire-protection associations as well as the files and records of Government agencies has been made to obtain authentic data on explosion losses. To indicate the extent of the hazard a summary of laboratory tests covering the explosibility of certain metal dusts, with brief reference to their uses and Methods of manufacture, and the data compiled from the information available on losses are presented in this publication.

The applicability of the "direct method" for determining the methane content of virgin coalbeds was tested. Preliminary results indicate that the direct method, when applied to exploration cores, can be successfully used to estimate coalbed gas content and also approximately predict the total gas emission from a prospective mine located in the coalbed at the exploration site.

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. "Wants" in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

Subsidence to surface occurs in a large proportion of underground mines. Preliminary to any indication of subsidence on the surface, there is usually a breaking up and sloughing of the cover into the mine opening which, in a period of time ranging from minutes to many years, progresses to the surface, This process is referred to as subsurface subsidence. In many mining operations, information regarding the process of subsurface subsidence is important, For example, if there are buildings or other improvements on the surface, or if the direction of the subsurface subsidence might threaten other underground workings--such as shafts--or if the subsidence might be progressing in a direction which would fall outside the anticipated subsidence limits, the problem could assume special significance.

Illumination plays a critical role in an underground miner?s safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize hazards. Mobile mining machinery, located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view (±10° to about ±60° off-axis), may pose potential pinning and striking hazards. The main objective of this research was to determine if there were peripheral visual performance improvements for the detection of moving objects when using cool-white light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps as compared to incandescent (INC) light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. The cap lamp variable of interest is the spectral power distribution (SPD); the illuminances were normalized by a diffusion filter. The second objective was to determine if age is a factor for peripheral visual performance. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner age is about 43 years old. Thirty subjects participated in the study; ten subjects each in the age groups of younger (18 to 25 years), middle (40 to 50 years), and older (50+ years). Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy of response to detect the rotation of high-contrast (white) circular targets located 3.83 meters (m) away at -20°, 40°, and 50° off-axis. The speed of detection and the number of missed target rotations (accuracy) were measured. The prototype LED cap lamp results were best with a 11% to 15% improvement compared to the INC and LED cap lamps respectively. Age does appear to be a significant factor. For the middle and older age groups?, target movement detection time increased 75% and 60% and the number of missed targets increased 500% and 450% respectively in comparison to the youngest age group. The results also suggest that target location is a significant factor. The subjects? target movement detection time for the 40° and 50° target movements increased 16% and 69% respectively as compared to the -20° target.

In April 1948, the Bureau of Mines was requested to evaluate the graphite deposit' known as the Benjamin Franklin and Just mines in Chester County, Pa. After preliminary investigation, it was recommended that the Bureau core-drill, trench, and sample the deposit and make beneficiation tests on the ore. During the first and second World Wars, flake graphite was in short supply, and a number of deposits in the United States were exploited. In 1942, the Defense Plant Corporation, through its lessee, the Benjamin Franklin Graphite Co., purchased 70.263 acres of graphite-bearing land and built a complete mining and milling plant with a capacity of 300 tons of crude ore per 24-hour day at a cost of $426,250 (Plancor No. 1254).

The occurrence of dust in mines has always been a source of trouble, but for any years, and virtually up to the beginning of the present century, relatively little of a definite nature was known as to the numerous ill effects of dust in mining operations. Even today, with the west amount of time given and attention paid (for at least 40 years in various, countries) to research and observation en dust in mining, and in spite of the experience with it, much information remains to be obtained, before definite, well-authenticated statements can be made as to numerous features connected with the occurrence of dust in Dines an of its effect upon the health and safety of the worker. One statement that can be made with relatively good assurance of being uncontradicted in that dust is a real menace to the well-being of mine workers, and this includes both health and safety. In addition, dust in and around mines and mining plants is one cause of large financial losses to mine owners and operators. FORMATION OF DUST IN COAL MINES IN THE UNITED STATES One definition of mining is "the processes by which useful materials are obtained from the earth's crust; " since virtually all of the useful materials of or in the earth's crust either are solids or must be reached by penetrating through solids, the materials that are moved in mining must necessarily be broken or disrupted, so that almost every phase of the work of loosening the material and transporting it is likely to produce dust.

The primary objective of the research was to grow aluminum borate whiskers or fibers and to determine their properties . Molten salt bath and vapor deposition methods were used for synthesis . Whiskers exceeding 25 mm in length were grown . The best results were obtained by vapor deposition and most of the data presented were determined on whiskers produced by this method of synthesis . Three different aluminum borate compositions ( 4.8A1203 B₂03 , 3.8A1203 B203 , and 2.5A120, B203 ) were identified by X- ray and chemical analyses . The aluminum borates 4.8A1203 B20, X- ray diffraction pattern was indexed . Optical data were obtained on the three aluminum borates . In addition the following whisker properties and growth factors were determined : ideal atmospheric dewpoint for vapor deposition method , near 65 ° F ; temperature range of whisker formation , 1,000 ° to 1,400 ° C for the molten bath method of synthesis , > 1,000 ° to < 1,400 ° C for the vapor deposition method ; whisker growth rates by the vapor deposition method , maximum 12 mm per hour ; raw material vaporization , 50 to 60 percent of the fluoride lost in 1 hour ; tensile strength , maximum obtained 174,162 psi ; melting points , ranged from 1,675 ° to 1,795 ° C.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed available data on the effect of crushing high-sulfur coals for the liberation of impurities in the light of increasingly stringent air pollution regulations. The survey, which provided information on Appalachian region coals only, indicated that such important coal- beds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14-mesh top size. This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

Back injuries from handling materials in underground mines continue to be a major safety problem. In spite of the ingenuity of many people and the development of numerous mechanized aids, the number of materials-handling injuries remains second only to the number of roof fall injuries in underground coalmines. Relocation and repositioning of electrical cable, conveyor belt parts, and roof bolt sup-plies in particular are the sources of significant numbers of back injuries. To help reduce such injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are examining Mine Safety and Health Administration accident data to determine correlations between materials-handling tasks and the number of back injuries. Also being investigated are new technologies used in underground mines in the United States. Equipment is being developed or modified that would replace the necessity of doing lifting tasks manually. A Coleman manipulator was tested, and modifications were made to make it more suitable for underground mine use. To reduce or eliminate the need to manually clean off materials that commonly plug grizzly openings, a track-guided pincher arm device was developed. Oversized rock can be broken with the pincher arms in the up position, and the arms can be lowered to grab and remove debris. The arm can also be used in a sweeping action to remove cohesive fines that may bridge grizzly openings.

As part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Petroleum Research Laboratory are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the Appalachian region. The increasing demand for petroleum and its products and the increasing cost of exploratory drilling tend to emphasize the importance of improving the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Published reports setting forth the pertinent facts of these operations may help others to profit by the experience. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in West Virginia by the Piedmont Oil and Gas Co., the Ryan Oil Co., and Water floods , Inc., on their Roane County leases in the Walton and Clover Rush Run pools. The principal oil-producing horizon underlying the area studied is the Big Injun sand, at approximately 2,000 feet. The sand is often referred to as blanket sand because it underlies much of the State and is oil-productive in many localities. Most of the pools in the area were discovered during 1907 to 1910 and were similarly developed and operated.

Capture airborne coal dust generated by a continuous mining machine to reduce workers? dust exposure and to improve face visibility. Approach Develop a low-profile dust collector system which can be mounted on the boom of a continuous miner. How It Works When coal is mined with a milling head continuous miner, a substantial amount of coal dust (respirable and non-respirable) escapes the dust suppression sprays at the cutter head. This can cause poor visibility around the cutting head and can expose the workers to high levels of respirable dust. A practical means of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted directly on the mining machine. The southeastern region of the United States is becoming more important as a petroleum-producing area, and it is receiving increasing attention from oil operators. In 1948 total production of crude oil from six southeastern States - Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia - was 55,244,000 barrels, which represents 2.7 percent of the Nation&apos;s output during that year. Kentucky and Tennessee have produced crude oil since the early days of the industry, but the remaining four States have had production only few years. Data on annual production of crude petroleum in the six States are given in table 1.

IN a Nation-wide appraisal of coking-coal reserves and of the feasibility of expanding them by upgrading marginal coals, it is natural that the Pittsburgh region of Pennsylvania should be considered first. Here, where the American iron and steel industry started, the Pittsburgh coal bed is of paramount importance. The use of coke in iron blast furnaces is said to have begun with the discovery that good blast-furnace fuel could readily be made by a simple method of coking Pittsburgh coal. To the present time, the prosperity of the steel industry has depended largely on utilization of this great coal reserve and the cheap transportation afforded by the Monongahela River system. OBJECT AND SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION The initial project in the study of upgrading marginal coking coals was laid out in this area, which contains large reserves of Pittsburgh coal contiguous to the Monongahela and its navigable tributaries. Much of the Pittsburgh coal remaining here is known to have a high sulfur content. The problem of reducing the sulfur to meet metallurgical requirements already has received much attention, and it is considered to be one of the most difficult technologic problems in the field of coal washing.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has dictated major changes in mine ventilation with regard to both air quantity and quality. Requirements have also been placed on the ventilation of beltlines, gob and face areas, and air velocities on trolley haulage roads are limited. Escapeways, separate from trolley haulage roads and on an intake split of air, must be maintained continuous to the surface. These and other similar requirements have not only precipitated several modifications to existing ventilation systems but also have greatly increased the complexities of new mine ventilation planning. It is apparent that the use of computers in ventilation system analysis and design is a necessity. SUMMARY Although computer oriented analysis of mine ventilation systems was introduced over two decades ago, it has yet to receive widespread acceptance in the United States. Central to this problem is the fact that, while many computer programs for network analysis have been developed, no attention has been paid to the development of computer input data. Consequently, without this foundation, program applications have been infrequent. This thesis has directly attacked this problem and has presented all pertinent information basic to the development of good computer input data. The areas that were covered include quantity measurement, pressure measurement, fan testing, survey data balancing, and the development of a network schematic from the ventilation survey results. These discussions on data collection and the corresponding reduction to computer coding have been illustrated by an application of a ventilation simulation program to an existing mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The design productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycling plants in the United States on January 1, 1960, was 54.6 million gallons per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represents an increase of 5.8 million gallons per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. The major increases occurred in Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. In Utah, natural gasoline capacity was reported for the first tine at 320 thousand gallons per day as of January 1, 1960. The total number of plants increased from 584 on January 1, 1958, to 596 on January 1, 1960. However, the operating plants decreased from 558 to 555 in the same period.
