The heat contents of the sesquioxides of erbium, holmium, thulium, and ytterbium (Er203, Ho203, Tm203, and Yb203) in the cubic crystalline form were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. The erbium and holmium sesquioxides gave regular heat content-temperature curves. Thulium sesquioxide had a minor thermal anomaly near 1,680° K, with a heat absorption of 310 cal/mole; similarly, ytterbium sesquioxide had a minor anomaly near 1,365° K, with a heat absorption of 150 cal/mole. The heat content results are presented in both tabular form (at 100° intervals) and in algebraic form. Entropy increments, corresponding to the tabulated heat content results, also are listed.

As part of its program to lessen dependence on foreign bauxite as the Nation's primary source of cell-grade alumina, the Bureau of Mines is investigating sulfuric acid (H2S04) leaching procedures for the recovery of alumina from domestic aluminous materials. The successful application of a H2S04 leaching process depends on the recovery of the aluminum values in an easily washed and filtered form, containing a minimum of water to be driven off in the subsequent calcination step. This goal was met by the high-temperature hydrolysis of simulated aluminum sulfate [A12(S04)3] leach liquor. Crystalline, insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate [A1(OH)S04], which had a water-to-alumina mole ratio of 1:1, was produced. Eighty-six percent of a solution containing 127 g of A12(S04)3 per liter and 76 pct of a solution containing 336 g of A12(S04)3 per liter were hydrolyzed to insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate by autoclaving for 1 hr at 320° C and rapidly quenching to room temperature. Higher operating temperatures were precluded by corrosion of the autoclave. The yield of aluminum in the hydrolysis product increased with increasing hydrolysis temperature and decreasing A12(S04)3 concentration.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 256,430-acre Alvord Desert and part of the 22,240-acre East Alvord Wilderness Study Area (OR-002-074 and OR-002-073A, respectively), in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Harney and Malheur Counties, OR, about 25 mi northeast of the small village of Fields. There are no mines, prospects, or identified mineral resources inside the study areas. Basalt flows within the study areas contain chalcedony-lined vugs and banded agate which may be of interest to rock hounds. An ignimbrite flow contains perlitic material, but crystalline contaminants make it unsuitable for commercial uses. Lacustrine (lake) sediments contain diatomite and clays, and evaporite crusts contain boron too low grade to profitably mine. Small quantities of common opal and petrified wood occur which might be of possible interest to rock hounds. Some of the petrified wood is black, free of fractures, and polishes well; it may be suitable as backing material for soft, thin, and brittle gemstones, such as precious opal. The lacustrine sediments also contain black, fetid layers which have above background, but economically insignificant concentrations of zinc, cobalt, nickel, barium, iron, manganese, aluminum, and potassium. Large quantities of fine-grained dune sands within the study areas are too far from markets for economic consideration. Ephemeral streams in the study areas contain small amounts of placer gold of no economic interest. The western portions of both study areas are reported to have moderate favorability for occurrences of natural gas, and both study areas are reported to have high favorability for the occurrence of geothermal resources. As of December 1986, oil and gas leases covered 3,100 acres in the study areas.

Although heated circuits frequently have been employed in the conditioning stases of certain flotation processes, particularly the flotation of fluorite, the control of temperature is not generally considered economically feasible for the flotation of coal. This viewpoint, although widely held, can neither be substantiated nor refuted by reference to published data. Some evidence is available, however, that temperature is an important variable in the floatability of coal as well as other minerals. For example, Gayle and Swelley4 found that contact angles for coal and related substances were definitely dependent on temperature. Bailey and Whalan5 showed that changes in pulp temperature may exert a pronounced influence on recoveries of coal in batch flotation tests. The present laboratory-scale investigation was undertaken to obtain information about the effects of changes in pulp temperature on coal flotation recovery and also on the selectivity of separation possible using different reagents. The results indicated that flotation recoveries were markedly affected by temperature variations when certain reagents, particularly simple aliphatic alcohols, were used. For other reagents, particularly kerosine, flotation recoveries were substantially independent of variations in pulp temperature. Release-analysis results indicated that temperature variations did not greatly affect the selectivity of separation possible with the reagents tested.

A simplified, routine method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing rock is presented. The sample is decomposed by repeated treatments with nitric, hydrofluoric, and perchloric acids. Since this procedure does not appreciably dissolve beryl, interference by beryllium (the principal interfering cation) is minimized for most samples. The salts are brought into solution with water and enough citric acid-ammonium citrate buffer is added to make the final volumetric dilution 0.20 M with respect to citrate. The addition of citrate greatly reduces anion interference in the hydrogen-oxygen flame, slightly increases the intensity of the lithium 671 millimicron emission line, and reduces the effect of most of the interfering cations to the extent that analytical separations are not necessary. The accuracy of results of single determinations of lithium in a pegmatite containing spodumene, lithium-bearing mica, and beryl are approximately equal to that obtained by other flame methods, INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken in Bureau of Mines laboratories to develop a reliable, rapid, routine analytical method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing minerals. The requirements of the procedure were that the method should be applicable to the analysis of a variety of lithium-bearing ores and test products, and the results would be reasonably accurate for materials containing 0.05 to 8 percent Li20.

The effect of a water-repellent film in sandstone cores on the effective permeability-saturation relationship was investigated as part of a cooperative research program between the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. The repellent film was formed by the reaction of methyltrichlorosilane3 with the connate water in the core. Other researchers have reported on the use of silicone chemicals to alter the flow characteristics of porous media (1-3, 5-7, 9, 10).4 The previous studies, however, dealt almost entirely with oil-water or oil-gas systems and not with water-gas systems. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using silane to retard the influx of water into natural-gas storage wells and to determine the necessary requirements for achieving this result. The success or failure of silane treatment as a remedial measure depends on its effect on gas-production rate and attendant water production.

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

In the past few years the advance of the Sunshine mine to national prominence as the chief silver-producing mine of the United States has revived interest in the area in which it is situated. Although this area lies between the great lead-Zinc-silver mines at Kellogg and those in the vicinity of Burke and Mullan it was generally presumed to be almost barren, as little ore had been found there until substantial ore bodies were developed on deep levels of the Sunshine mine. In early days it was called the "dry belt" because its ores were siliceous and contained little lead; but the classification of ores in smelting as wet or dry, although once customary, has long been obsolete The area will therefore be referred to in this paper as the silver belt of the Coeur d'Alene district because the value of its ore is due chiefly to silver, the current production of which is large, providing over 60 percent of the silver output of Idaho. Silver Belt - Its Limits and Character With a daily production of half a ten of silver or more from the Sunshine mine, the silver belt has become the scene of extensive exploration at many properties, and the outlook for its future seems promising enough to warrant the lively interest now being displayed in the area by the public.

The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary beneficiation studies of a gold-bearing graphitic schist from Blue Hill, Tallapoosa County, Ala. The average analysis of the material was 0.08 oz/ton gold. Tabling of minus 35-mesh material recovered 83 to 94 percent of the gold at grades of 6.925 to 2.165 oz/ton, respectively. A combination of jigging and tabling resulted in a concentrate assaying 24.3 oz/ton gold and contained 87 percent of the total gold. Treatment of the material by jigging, tabling, and amalgamation recovered 86.5 percent of the gold.

Thermodynamics is a powerful tool for investigating rotational isomerism in substituted ethanes and related molecules. Accurate calorimetric data can be interpreted to give information, not only about the energy difference between conformations, but also about the shape of the potential barrier hindering rotation from one conformation to another. However, a deterrent to this use of thermodynamics is the labor required to calculate the contributions to the thermodynamic functions for assumed potential functions. Tables of thermo-dynamic contributions for appropriate potential functions can eliminate that labor and greatly facilitate the thermodynamic study of rotational isomerism. In this research, tables of contributions to the thermodynamic functions were compiled for two potential functions typical of some commonly encountered examples of rotational isomerism. TYPES OF POTENTIAL FUNCTIONS Potential function 1, illustrated in figure 1, A, has two equal minima higher than the third. It has the general shape of the barrier to internal rotation in n-butane, for example. The trans conformation of n-butane has the lowest energy, and the two skew or gauche conformations have equal but higher energy. Potential function2, illustrated in figure 1, B, has two equal minima lower than the third. It has the general shape of the barrier in 2-methylbutane, for example. The two C1 conformations of 2-methylbutane have equal energy much lower than the assumed Cs conformation, which has not been observed spectroscopically.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. "INTRODCJCTJONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acctyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to mediate a broad range of biological activities. 1·3 Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue,4 secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytcs,5 airway constriction,6 pulmonary edema,7 and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of thelungs.8-9PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin. 1~1 3 Therefore, PAF may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of P AF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type Il epithelial cells.METHODSIsolation of CellsNeutrophils were isolated from human blood by dextran settling and centrifugal elutriation.14 Isolated neutrophils (93% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium (145 mM NaCl, 5 mM KCI, 10 mM HEPES, 5 mM glucose, and 1 mM CaC12; pH = 7.4). Cell number and volume were determined with an electronic cell counter equipped with a sizing attachment.Rat alveolar macrophages were obtained by pulmonary lavage with ea2+, Mg2+-free Hanks balanced salts solution. 15 Alveolar macrophages (94% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium, counted, and sized electronically.Rat alveolar type Il cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion for 35 minutes at 37°C with 40 µ/ml type I elastasc and 0.1 % collagenase and purified by centrifugal elutriation. 16.17 Type Il cells (92 % pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium for measurement of membrane potential, oxygen consumption, and trypan blue exclusion. Type Il pneumocytcs were resuspended in 0.1 M NaCl plus 0.05 M HEPES (pH = 7.8) to measure cytochrome P450-dependent activities and aggregation. Cell size and number were determined electronically."

"Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM. Cooperative efforts by the Bureau of Mines and Agapito & Associates, Inc., Grand Junction, CO, achieved the research objective of showing that data from measurements of the rate and change in rate of mine roof movement can be effective in detecting roof instability. Several instruments and techniques have been used to monitor roof movement and to detect imminent roof caves during pillar robbing. Early detection of unstable conditions can provide time either to withdraw personnel and equipment or to allocate supplemental support to prevent injury or down-time. Critical convergence rates were determined both manually and electronically. The detection of critical rate of movement has been shown to be an effective tool in ground control efforts.

This report is the fifth in a series concerning the Bureau of Mines program for microfilming maps of abandoned mines in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. A catalog of the microfilmed maps of 47 of 49 major mines and 18 independent mines in the Southern field is presented. Previous reports included catalogs of microfilmed maps of mines in the Eastern Middle field, the Wyoming and Lackawanna Basins of the Northern field, and the Western Middle anthracite field.

This paper, which is one of a group presented by the United States Bureau of Mines covering mining practice in different districts, deals in particular with the methods employed in mining the horizontal type of zinc-lead orebodies of the West Baxter area of the Tri-State zinc and lead district. These orebodies, locally termed "sheet-ground" bodies, with their relatively low working faces and low tenor of zinc and lead, require changes in the mining practice which is used in the balance of the district. In addition to the general mining methods, this paper also describes the system of hand sorting employed prior to the direct milling of the ore. The Hartley mine is situated mile west of Baxter Springs, Kans., as indicated in Figure 1. Its general outline and the location of the shafts with respect to the milling plant are shown in Figure 2.

The introduction of "high-tech" materials such as new polymer composites presents significant competitive challenges and opportunities in conventional mineral markets. Moreover, rapid advances in materials science are critical to the resolution of important economic and strategic issues, including national competitiveness and import dependence. This Bureau of Mines study examines the displacement of conventional nonfuel mineral materials by certain new materials, specifically advanced plastics and ceramics. Analyses of substitution by plastics are conducted for five major U.S. industrial sectors: motor vehicle manufacturing, aerospace applications, building and construction, packaging, and heavy machinery production. Based on interviews with more than 60 scientists, executives, and other professionals engaged in materials development and sales, forecasts of substitution by plastics during the 1990's are made for aluminum, steel, and glass. In addition to these forecasts, study findings identify key factors that will influence the emergence of advanced materials in the next decade.

Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has successfully demonstrated an electrooxidation-solvent extraction-carbon adsorption process for recovering molybdenum and rhenium from offgrade concentrates. The flow sequence consists of dissolution of metal values by electrooxidation, liquid-solid separation by thickening, acidification and chlorate ion removal by sulfur dioxide treatment, solvent extraction to concentrate the molybdenum and rhenium, separation of molybdenum and rhenium by carbon adsorption, and metal recovery by crystallization. Molybdenum and rhenium were recovered as ammonium paramolybdate and ammonium perrhenate. Electrolysis of brine-concentrate pulps to generate a hypochlorite oxidizing agent in situ resulted in the dissolution of 98.9 and 99.1 pct of the molybdenum and rhenium, respectively, at an energy consumption of 13.7 kwhr/lb of molybdenum extracted.
