This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It describes the noise source diagnosis of a Jeffrey 120M conveyor and the evaluation of several treatments all conducted in a test facility aboveground. The conveyor noise at the operator's position was gradually reduced from 101.5 to 93 dBA using damping, vibration isolation, sound barriers and smoother discontinuities. The underground performance of the selected treatments will be addressed in Volume II of the report.

The Bureau of Mines developed techniques for induction melting of titanium in a split, water-cooled copper crucible. Calcium fluoride, which was used as an inert slag cover during melting, formed an insulating layer of solid slag between the ingot and the crucible wall. This thin layer of slag effectively insulated the ingot from the crucible and prevented the molten metal from shorting across the slits between adjacent segments of the crucible. The technique provides a means of melting loose titanium sponge and scrap and eliminates the need for fabricating a consumable electrode. This report describes the equipment developed and compares ingots produced from two varieties of titanium sponge, from titanium scrap, and from previously melted titanium with ingots prepared by vacuum-arc melting and electroslag melting. A melting scheme was also proposed and evaluated whereby loose titanium sponge was consolidated into a first-melt ingot for vacuum-arc remelting.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United states was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United states Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC). Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-431' the semiannual reports were resumed.

"INTRODUCTION Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils 4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal—tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 60 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin—free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin—free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water—soluble sulphonic acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiatingbetween cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins). Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons,It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings."

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. Detrick, president, and Edward Thornton, general manager of the company for their cooperation in making this paper possible. Coalbed discontinuities historically have been hazardous to mining as well as obstructions to efficient production. An effective means of mapping these features is needed in order to plan safe and efficient mine development. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the use of surface seismic techniques for this purpose. At a southwestern Pennsylvania mine, a system of coalbed discontinu-ities (paleochannels) was accurately mapped by the Bureau of Mines using borehole log methods and underground observation. This site was chosen to test the value of a high-resolution surface seismic reflection on technique for coalbed mapping. A statistical study performed at this mine indicated that the probability of accurately delineating this paleochannel system with conventional borehole methods was remote. A total of 1.47 miles of high-resolution seismic survey, comprised of four seismic profiles, was conducted in known and suspected coalbed discontinuity areas. Several test holes were drilled on the seismic lines in order to evaluate the interpretations. It was found, based on these and other existing boreholes, that it is possible to predict these dis-continuities. Paleochannel washouts were correctly predicted in several instances but in other instances were either incorrectly predicted or not predicted in areas of known discontinuities.

The Bureau of Mines Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, with the cooperation of the Penn York Oil Company, cored the Dewdrop, Bradford Third, Lewis Run, and Sartwell sands in the Sartwell oilfield, McKean County, Pa. This report contains a review of the geology and depositional history of the field and an evaluation of the feasibility of secondary recovery of oil from the Bradford Third and Sartwell sands by waterflood or gas drive. Core analysis, geologic data, and electrical and radioactivity logs were used to evaluate the reservoir characteristics. Reservoir geometry, rock properties, fluid characteristics and saturations, and relative permeability-saturation relationships were used to assess the floodability of these two sands. The results of this study indicate that between 53,000 and 61,000 barrels of oil can be recovered by water or gas injection. The success of a waterflood or gas drive will depend on the field injection rates of the reservoirs comprising this oilfield. Following an economic evaluation, additional field work is recommended to further test the floodability of the reservoir.

In 1960 over 93 percent of the coal cleaned mechanically in the United States was cleaned in processes that utilized water or dense-medium suspensions of fine solids in water. Thus, in the process of removing deleterious ash-forming and sulfur-bearing minerals, another deleterious substance--water-- is added to the coal. The subsequent removal of the water from the coal, and the concomitant recovery of the coal from the water, is not troublesome in the sizes coarser than 1/4-inch. In the finer sizes, however, it is a difficult procedure that often costs more than the original washing operation. Because of the importance of liquid-solids separation in coal preparation, the Bureau of Mines has a continuing program of research in this field. The objective is to make available information on the performance characteristics of various types of equipment available for liquid-solids separations, thus promoting the wise selection of equipment for specific applications, and, thereby, more effective processing of coal. Results of work on flocculation as an aid to filtration5 and the sieve bend screen6 have been published. The present investigation of the screw-type classifier operating in combination with the cyclone was undertaken primarily because such classifiers are comparatively new to coal preparation and information on their performance is not available. The cyclone has become well-known since its introduction in this country by the Bureau of Mines in 1948.7 Use of the cyclone in conjunction with the screw-type classifier represents an attempt to provide the maximum recovery of solids at minimum moisture content.

Using three-dimensional (3-0) graphics computing to evaluate new technologies for computer-assisted mining systems illustrates how these visual techniques can redefine the way researchers look at raw scientific data. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is using 3-D graphics computing to obtain cheaply, easily, and quickly information about the operation and design of current and proposed mechanical coal and metal-nonmetal mining systems. Bureau engineers developed a graphics simulator for a continuous miner that enables a realistic test for experimental software that controls the functions of a machine. Some of the specific simulated functions of the continuous miner are machine motion, appendage motion, machine position, and machine sensors. The simulator uses data files generated in the laboratory or mine using a computer-assisted mining machine. The data file contains information from a laser-based guidance system and a data acquisition system that records all control commands given to a computer-assisted mining machine. This report documents the first phase in developing the simulator and discusses simulator requirements, features of the initial simulator, and several examples of its application. During this endeavor, Bureau engineers discovered and appreciated the simulator's potential to assist their investigations of machine controls and navigation systems.

The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

The location and production potential of a large block of strippable reserves in North Dakota were determined by using published data as a base and adding new drill hole data or other data contributed by companies that presently own or lease coal lands. Only beds exceeding 5 feet in thickness, under less than 120 feet of overburden, and in large blocks of 5 million tons or more were included in the estimates. All such reserves are in the Fort Union Formation of western North Dakota and are lignite in rank. Sixteen large blocks of reserves evaluated in this study are estimated to contain a total of 4.1 billion tons of strippable lignite.

"INTRODUCTION The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry.The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment, through improved types of lightning arresters, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures.LIGHTNING PHENOMENAIn 1751, Franklin proved that, lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition to define the various phases of the phenomenon. An evaluation of electrowon tungsten powder was made by comparing its characteristics with conventional hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . Electrowon tungsten powder was investigated with respect to particle size and shape , apparent density , flow rate , compressibility , green strength , and sintering characteristics . In addition , its chemical purity , absolute density , and purification by melting were determined . Significant findings were higher flow rates and better compressibility than hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . However , the large particle size peculiar to the electrowinning process effectively prevented conventional sintering to a high- density material . The possibility of producing high - density material , using a new technique of hot swaging sheathed sintered - tungsten compacts , was demonstrated by the achievement of densities of 92 percent of theoretical .

The Bureau of Mines studied reinforcement of sulfur concretes using glass, polyester, and aramid fibers. The objective of this research was to determine the feasibility of fiber-reinforcing the sulfur concrete to enhance the flexural properties. Optimum fiber sulfur concrete compositions were formulated with a cement-to-fiber ratio of 9.0:1 for glass-fiber and polyester-fiber sulfur concretes and 12.1:1 for aramid-fiber sulfur concretes. Test samples were prepared using techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines. Flexural strength values of up to 50 pct of compressive strength values were achieved with fiber additions. With non-fiber-reinforced sulfur concrete, the values ranged up to 20 pct. The impact strength and fracture toughness of sulfur concretes were increased sig-nificantly by reinforcement with glass or with aramid fiber and were adversely affected by use of polyester fiber. Strain tolerance was doubled and failure mode was shifted from catastrophic to noncatastrophic type by adding glass fiber. The glass-fiber and aramid-fiber sulfur concretes are resistant to acid corrosion and have proved durable in freeze-thaw cycles. This laboratory and field evaluation has shown that fiber reinforcement of sulfur concrete is feasible and that it enhances the flexural properties.

Stress-relief techniques and instrumentation have been developed through many years of research in the Bureau of Mines and successfully used to determine the in situ state of stress in rock. This report describes the Bureau's three-component borehole deformation gauge and the drilling equipment and accessories used with it. Operation and calibration procedures for the deformation gauge are discussed in detail, along with site selection and overcoring procedures. Information and references included in this publication provide a guide to the Bureau's cover-coring method for determining rock stress.

The exingencies of a world war have brought home to the American public, especially the people of the. Eastern States, the urgent need for conserving fuel. Transportation problems in the East have created an unprecedented situation wherein fuel-oil supplies are greatly restricted, and the consequent increase in demand for coal further complicates the problem of transporting and storing that commodity. People should awaken to the need for utilizing every possibly means of conserving to fuel, even to the extent of reducing the temperature in their homes.

In the method used in the Health Branch of the Bureau of Mines for petro-graphic identification of the minerals in a rock, the sample is crushed, ground to a fine powder in a mortar, the powder is put on a slide, a drop of index oil and a cover slip are added, and the slide is ready for examination. The rock should be ground fine enough so that most of the particles consist of only one mineral, otherwise identification is difficult. Finally, the amounts of the minerals present in the sample are estimated to the nearest 5 or 10 percent. When quartz grains are mixed with some claylike minerals) of which by far the most common example is quartz and kaolinite in a shale, grinding in a mortar does not always separate the quartz from the kaolinite; instead, the quartz grains become coated with the kaolinite and are not visible, even after careful search. Talc acts Similarly, but muscovite and pyrophyllite do not. In evaluating the possible silicosis hazard of breathing dust from a shale, it is essential to be able to see and identify all of the quartz grains, as the other minerals present are relatively innocuous.

The Cherry Creek tungsten district was explored by the Bureau of Mines from April 16 to August 13, 1942. This district is in north-central White Pine County, Nev., 50 miles north of Ely. Principal work was done on the property of the Cherry Creek Tungsten Mining Co. and at the adjacent Chance mine, although the entire district was examined and mapped. The exploratory work was done in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised surveying, trenching, sampling, long-hole and core drilling, rehabilitation of mine workings, road building, drifting, and shaft sinking. The more important tungsten occurrences were explored by trenching and diamond drilling. Sixteen holes, having a total length of 2,515 feet, were drilled. The project resulted in partial development of three new tungsten deposits and small increases in the reserve tonnage of two scheelite-bearing lenses that were being mined by the company. The following pages summarize the history of the district, outline the ownership of the properties explored, and describe the physical features and mineral deposits. Mining and milling practices at the Cherry Creek tungsten mine are outlined, and the plan and results of project work are presented in detail together with surface maps, assay maps, and drill-hole logs.

Galvanizers' sal skimmings have been treated by two methods of leaching in attempts to produce preflux solutions suitable for use in galvanizing operations. Both water-leaching and acid-leaching procedures are effective, except in severely exhausted skimmings when water-leaching becomes impractical. A preliminary analysis of the skimmings is not required. Solutions in the recommended concentration range can be produced conveniently by control of pH, specific gravity, and chlorine content. A technician would require only a short period of training to be able to perform the operations described.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated combustion of lignite in domes-tic heating equipment to obtain information on equipment performance and to evaluate testing procedures. Three types of domestic heating equipment were tested, ranging from a hand-tilled, magazine-type space heater to a ram-type overfeed stoker. Lignite was readily burned in each of the three units under various test conditions. Burnoff rates determined by adding weighed charges to the magazine were found to be in error because of shrinkage of the lignite when only a portion of the magazine capacity was consumed during a test. More reliable burnoff rates could be determined by carbon-nitrogen balances. A hand-fired magazine-type space heater (Booker heater) was operated without the furnace attachment at efficiencies to 75 pct. One test series was run with minimum supervision under conditions encountered in actual household operation. No mechanical trouble was encountered.
