"INTRODUCTION The Copper Butte mine was examined, surveyed and mapped (fig. 1) by a Bureau of Mines engineer in January 1944. As a result, it was decided to diamond-drill the deposit, using Bureau of Mines equipment, and drilling was started October 14, 1944, under the supervision of two Bureau engineers, and stopped April 5, 1945. Nine holes were drilled for a total of 1,274 feet, not including 48 feet on a lost hole. Figures 2 and 3 are sections at AA' and BB' of figures 1, and show the adjusted average assays of drill-hole samples. Figures 4 and 5 are separate maps of holes 4 and 6, respectively.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. This paper on methods and costs of mining and milling iron ore at the Iron Mountain mine of Ozark Ore Co., St, Francois County, Mo., is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The Iron Mountain operation is notable for its successful transition from open-pit to underground mining, for use underground of large earth-moving equipment, and for development of a multilevel room-and-pillar mining method. Milling methods also have undergone transitions - from hand sorting and log washing in the early days to gravity concentration. This Bureau of Mines report describes a field experiment involving the sinking of two test shafts to directly compare the deformational behavior of circular and rectangular shapes. Results show that the circular shape is less sensitive to geologic discontinuities and applied stress field. Also, the rectangular shape is subject to a variety of behavioral modes, including beam bending and buckling. Geologic discontinuities around circular and rectangular shapes influence displacement significantly. Simple, two-dimensional elastic finite-element modeling, simulating circular and rectangular shapes in a biaxial stress field, shows that the structural response of a shaft is largely controlled by geologic structure. Consideration of anisotropy may be required for realistic analysis of a deep shaft.

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

Heat capacity measurements of akermanite ( Ca,MgSiO ) , cordierite (Mg2A14 Sig018 ) , gehlenite ( Ca₂Al₂ SiO ) , and merwinite ( Ca ,MgSiO ) were conducted over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298.15 ° K. The entropies at 298.15 K ( expressed in cal / deg mole ) were evaluated as follows : Akermanite , 50.0 ± 0.5 ; cordierite , 97.3 ± 0.9 ; gehlenite , 47.4 ± 0.4 ; and merwinite , 60.5 ± 0.5 . All four compounds have positive entropies of formation from their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K ; the values range from 4.6 cal /deg mole for akermanite to 10.1 cal / deg mole for cordierite .

Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United StAtes Department of the Interior's Bureau vi Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and. the results are described in this report.

Ultrasonic ranging sensors are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are normally small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances through moderate amounts of dust, smoke, and humidity, so they are well suited to underground mines. In the work reported here, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, researchers tested ultrasonic ranging sensors for their abiity to define rib line features for computer-aided navigation of underground mine mobile equipment. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of the individual rangers in a ring array produced by Denning Robotics of Wilmington, MA. The results showed that the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AMAX's Henderson Mine showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure the distance to mine features, including convex and concave corners and rib intersections. The results showed that when used properly, the ranger data are accurate enough for reliable mine vehicle navigation When used incorrectly, ultrasonic rangers do not provide the anticipated data. Therefore, this report explains the principles of ultrasonic range measurement, describes the ranger's strengths and weaknesses, and explains proper ranger use and data analysis.

THE BUREAU OF MINES began an investigation of tungsten resources of Montana in September 1953. This report presents information obtained from July 1955 to September 1957 on tungsten deposits in and near the Mount Torrey batholith. The batholith comprises part of the Pioneer Mountains of Beaverhead County in the southwest corner of Montana. Included in the report are assays and preliminary-examination data on 22 properties. Tungsten minerals are known to occur in 19 of the properties. The major producer is the Brown's Lake mine which has produced more than 625,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of the deposits are in the Lost Creek, Utopia, and Bald Mountain mining districts along the east and south margins of the Pioneer Mountains. The districts are less than 27 miles from Dillon, Mont.

Chromium resources in the United States are estimated at 1.8 million tons of recoverable chromium contained in 22.5 million tons of chromite-bearing material. Additional resource is presumed existent in large, but as yet undetermined, quantities of material containing less than 10 percent Cr203. No domestic resources are being mined presently (1969). Excluding transportation charges to domestic consuming areas, the total 1.8 million tons of chromim is estimated to be available, in ore or concentrate, at costs up to $0.64 per pound; 63 percent of the total is available under $0.11 per pound; and 38 percent under $0.08 per pound. It is judged that transportation from the resource areas to the existing market centers would add nearly $0.05 to the cost of a pound of chromium contained in ore or concentrate. Technically effective beneficiation methods have been developed for much of the known domestic resource, and further development might reduce costs of processing these materials. However, at present, domestic chromium resources are noncompetitive with foreign sources.

To determine the availability of manganese for metallurgical purposes from selected world resources, the Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential production of contained manganese in concentrates based on the demonstrated resources of 23 foreign and 8 domestic mines and deposits in 9 market economy countries. All but 2 of the 23 foreign deposits are operating mines; none of the domestic deposits are in operation. The demonstrated resources of the mines and deposits used in this study represent an in situ ore resource of approximately 2.2 billion tons," containing 780 million tons of manganese with a total recoverable production potential of 514 million tons of contained manganese in concentrates. The analyses of mines and deposits in this study indicate that about 213 million tons of the contained manganese (41 pct) is potentially available at a January 1981 constant dollar long-run total cost of up to $1.50 per long ton unit (22.4 lb, or 10.15 kg contained Mn), approximately 428 million tons (83 pet) is potentially available at a cost of about $1.75 or less, and 491 million tons (95 pet) is available at less than $3.30. The remaining 23 million tons, which is potentially available at much higher costs (about $8 to $35 per unit), represents the U.S. deposits. On an annual basis, with a cost range of up to $1.75 per long ton unit, the availability from currently operating mines would last at least 80 years based on 1980 world production data. Total manganese production costs are estimated to comprise mining-8 pet, beneficiation-3 pet, transportation-26 pet, and smelting-63 pet.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gras association, has been studying actively for the past several years the problem of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. Numerous data on gas flow through pipe lines under many conditions of operation have been obtained by carefully conducted tests, and these data, together with all other available information, have been analyzed carefully to secure practical facts for the use of operators in designing pipe lines and determining the effects of different operating conditions on pipe-line capacities. The first procedure in initiating; this problem was to review, compile, and analyze all of the existing data on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines. Actual data applicable to pipe and operating conditions normally used in the transmission of natural gas were meager, and the several pipe line flow formulas developed by different investigators gave widely varying; results when applied to problems of pipe-line design. Therefore, further experimental work under conditions comparable to those found in transmitting natural gas was essential before any definite recommendations could be made.

This paper, covering Chaffee, Fremont, Gunnison, Lake, Larimer, Park, and Summit Counties, Colo., is the second of a series reporting on the tungsten potential of the Colorado region. The assembled information was obtained by examination of some properties, personal contacts with owners, and access to unpublished reports by other engineers. The tungsten-bearing areas of the 7 counties cover approximately 400 square miles and are in 10 distinct areas, which vary in size (fig. 1) from 1 square mile up to 290 square miles. The tungsten mineral wolframite was discovered by a man named Hackay near Dale on the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad in the early 1900's, and wolframite and hubnerite were noted at Climax and the adjacent areas in Lake and Summit Counties at an early date, but no records of shipment from any of the areas are available before World War II. It is not known when scheelite was first discovered, but it was recognized in the Stockton mine during World War I. In the counties listed 64 properties are known to contain tungsten; of these, 18 have had some commercial output, although only 3 of them produced in 1953. The total production through 1953 is estimated at 115,000 short-ton units of tungsten trioxide. In 1953 by far the major portion came from the Climax mine.

After the discovery of the rare-earth mineral deposit in the Clark Mountain area near Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County, Calif., two samples wore obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines for investigation of possible method of concentration. Three other samples were received later from different locations in the same area. The rare-earth mineral in this ore had been identified by E. T. Schonk as bastnaesite, a fluocarbonate of the rare-earth metals containing cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, thorium, uranium, etc. Associated with the bastnaesite were barite, silica, and some calcite. The bastnaesite contained a small amount of iron as a coloration and some manganese. Twenty to fifty percent of the weight of the samples studied was bastnaesite, or ten to twenty-five percent total rare-earth oxides; about half was cerium oxide. Apparently, none of this mineral occurred in pure form. Even the highest-grade particles 'wore contaminated by fine, interlocked grains of barite, calcite, and silica; barite contamination predominated, and the barite was interlocked with varying amounts of bastnaesite. While the specific gravities of pure bastnaesite and barite (approximately 5.0 and 4.50 respectively) differ enough to allow separation by gravity, the interlocking of the minerals nullified this difference. Consequently, only a partial separation could be made by gravity concentration. The extremely fine grained texture of most of the ore prevented grinding to a size that would make concentration by flotation practicable; a partial separation of barite by this means was effected.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. "INTRODUCTION A considerable part of the metallurgical work of the Precious Metals Section comprises ore-testing experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts on areas. Projects authorized by the Bureau and assigned to the Precious Metals Section generally include only those ores or tailings in which the precious metals are the main valuable constituents; however, there are also included ores that contain strategic or critical metals in addition to the precious metals. The recovery of strategic and critical minerals is the most important phase of the treatment of this latter class of ores. However, if a considerable percentage of the precious-metal content of such ores can be recovered without complicating the flow sheet too much, it may be possible to treat an ore for the recovery of strategic or critical metals that could not otherwise be treated at a profit.Standard testing procedure involving cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity concentration, and flotation, or a combination of these methods, is employed in the greater part of this work. However, as the complexity of the ores furnished for this work has increased, it has been necessary to include special applications of standard procedures in many instances, Standard methods of conducting tests and the purposes of the work as a whole have been discussed in previous reports 4/ of ore-testing studies. In the present report, whenever it has been necessary to apply some special phase of standard treatment, this has boon explained in detail in that particular section of the report."

This manual provides instructions for installling, operating, and maintaining protective canopies on the Joy Mfg. Co. cutter. These instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopies are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other cutters with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other cutters and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

This report presents the results obtained in a study of the technical feasibility of recovering a usable pig iron by pyrometallurgical treatment of typical copper reverberatory slags . The iron in the slag was readily reduced with carbon , but the copper and sulfur content of the metal was best controlled by a three - stage procedure comprising ( 1 ) melting the slag with pyrite to remove copper as a low- grade matte , ( 2 ) smelting the partly decopperized slag with fluxes and carbon to reduce the iron , and ( 3 ) refining the impure iron alloy from step 2 with a flush slag to remove sulfur and residual copper . Laboratory - scale tests demonstrated that washing with 8 wt pct of pyrite lowered the copper content of a typical reverberatory slag from 0.58 to 0.12 Subsequent smelting of a mixture composed of 70 pct decopperized slag , 25 pct lime , and 5 pct coke reduced 84 pct of the iron to metal containing 2.27 pct sulfur . This metal then was successfully desulfurized by treatment with a basic flush slag to produce a finished metal that contained , in percent , 93.5 Fe , 0.02 S , 0.26 Cu , and 4.9 C. Overall recovery of iron under the conditions of trial was about 80 pct . This could be increased if higher tolerances for copper could be accepted . Commercial processing would be accomplished in three furnaces with molten materials passing from one to another . Currently produced smelter slag could be treated fairly inexpensively , because the molten product would require only a little additional heat to produce an iron byproduct that undoubtedly would be attractive to local foundries .
