During the period 1979 thru 1982. Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United StAtes Department of the Interior's Bureau vi Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and. the results are described in this report.

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Butte mine was examined, surveyed and mapped (fig. 1) by a Bureau of Mines engineer in January 1944. As a result, it was decided to diamond-drill the deposit, using Bureau of Mines equipment, and drilling was started October 14, 1944, under the supervision of two Bureau engineers, and stopped April 5, 1945. Nine holes were drilled for a total of 1,274 feet, not including 48 feet on a lost hole. Figures 2 and 3 are sections at AA' and BB' of figures 1, and show the adjusted average assays of drill-hole samples. Figures 4 and 5 are separate maps of holes 4 and 6, respectively.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. This Bureau of Mines report describes a field experiment involving the sinking of two test shafts to directly compare the deformational behavior of circular and rectangular shapes. Results show that the circular shape is less sensitive to geologic discontinuities and applied stress field. Also, the rectangular shape is subject to a variety of behavioral modes, including beam bending and buckling. Geologic discontinuities around circular and rectangular shapes influence displacement significantly. Simple, two-dimensional elastic finite-element modeling, simulating circular and rectangular shapes in a biaxial stress field, shows that the structural response of a shaft is largely controlled by geologic structure. Consideration of anisotropy may be required for realistic analysis of a deep shaft.

An investigation of coal deposits near Cerrillos Santa Fe County, N. Mex., was undertaken 14 the Bureau of Mines in 1943 as part of a general program to determine sources of metallurgical coal for western steel plants. Almost all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide Is mined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in, Carbon County,, Utah. Coke used in western steel plants that is produced from Lower Sunnyside a coal is weaker, structurally, than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality then the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. The objective of investigations of western coals was to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed. and (b) develop; if possible, reserves of coal with coking quantities superior to those of Lower Sunnyside

Mine fires have occurred since the mining of coal was begun, and they are still occurring. The resulting economic waste may become considerable (219),3 especially if a fire is allowed to assume major proportions or to get beyond control temporarily. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to have every action count. To do this effectively, it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment and thereafter what is happening in a remote or inaccessible area. It is equally important to know before¬hand what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. The logical method of combatting a fire demands the cooperation of both mining engineer and chemist. They should decide the course of action to be taken, drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required for proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which they could be carried out, and upon the chemist's knowledge of the results to be expected therefrom.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. THE BUREAU OF MINES began an investigation of tungsten resources of Montana in September 1953. This report presents information obtained from July 1955 to September 1957 on tungsten deposits in and near the Mount Torrey batholith. The batholith comprises part of the Pioneer Mountains of Beaverhead County in the southwest corner of Montana. Included in the report are assays and preliminary-examination data on 22 properties. Tungsten minerals are known to occur in 19 of the properties. The major producer is the Brown's Lake mine which has produced more than 625,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of the deposits are in the Lost Creek, Utopia, and Bald Mountain mining districts along the east and south margins of the Pioneer Mountains. The districts are less than 27 miles from Dillon, Mont.

Heat capacity measurements of akermanite ( Ca,MgSiO ) , cordierite (Mg2A14 Sig018 ) , gehlenite ( Ca₂Al₂ SiO ) , and merwinite ( Ca ,MgSiO ) were conducted over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298.15 ° K. The entropies at 298.15 K ( expressed in cal / deg mole ) were evaluated as follows : Akermanite , 50.0 ± 0.5 ; cordierite , 97.3 ± 0.9 ; gehlenite , 47.4 ± 0.4 ; and merwinite , 60.5 ± 0.5 . All four compounds have positive entropies of formation from their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K ; the values range from 4.6 cal /deg mole for akermanite to 10.1 cal / deg mole for cordierite .

Chromium resources in the United States are estimated at 1.8 million tons of recoverable chromium contained in 22.5 million tons of chromite-bearing material. Additional resource is presumed existent in large, but as yet undetermined, quantities of material containing less than 10 percent Cr203. No domestic resources are being mined presently (1969). Excluding transportation charges to domestic consuming areas, the total 1.8 million tons of chromim is estimated to be available, in ore or concentrate, at costs up to $0.64 per pound; 63 percent of the total is available under $0.11 per pound; and 38 percent under $0.08 per pound. It is judged that transportation from the resource areas to the existing market centers would add nearly $0.05 to the cost of a pound of chromium contained in ore or concentrate. Technically effective beneficiation methods have been developed for much of the known domestic resource, and further development might reduce costs of processing these materials. However, at present, domestic chromium resources are noncompetitive with foreign sources.

A geologic framework for interpreting stratigraphic and geographic variations of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Creek Basin is developed from lithologic data accumulated by the Bureau of Mines from oil-shale coreholes. From detailed Bureau of Mines descriptions of samples from nine coreholes and supplementary lithologic data from seven additional sampled sections, three cross sections were constructed along lines transecting the basin. Plotted as lithologic columns with corresponding oil yields and resistivity logs, the sampled sections are correlated on a time-stratigraphic basis. Distribution and correlation of nahcolite and halite zones are shown, and the approximate base of leaching of these saline minerals is indicated. General lithologic characteristics of members and zones are discussed and interpreted. Large-scale lithologic logs illustrate the nine Bureau of Mines core descriptions, and the complete description of Bureau of Mines-Atomic Energy Commission Colorado Corehole No. 1 is included in an appendix. The time-correlated cross sections provide a necessary framework for understanding the depositional history of the Green River Formation and will facilitate evaluation of oil shale and other mineral resources in the Piceance Creek Basin.

"The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County Wyo., and is favorably nituated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities.Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small treed and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.The deposits lie upon land owned by Wyoming, now leased by a group of Wyoming and Colorado businessman constituting the Copper King Mining Co.Primary copper-gold mineralization seems largely confined to an equigranular, relatively fine grained gneiss that is part of a pre-Cambrian complex of metamorphic rocks ranging from schists to pegmatites. The copper minerals are oxidized to a depth of from 100 to 150 feet, with the occasional occurrence of secondary minerals at greater depths. The copper minerals chalcopyrite, malachite, chalcocite, bornite, cuprite(?), and some native copper were observed in Le deposit.In addition to the 4,030 feet of diamond-core drilling in 11 holes done on the deposit by private companies, the Bureau of Mines drilled 3 holes for a total of 2,630 feet. The sample results of this drilling plus available data from previous drilling and sampling are appended to this report."

Under the terms of the act establishing the Bureau of Mines, this bureau was authorized to carryon the work of testing and analyzing fuels which had been conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. That work included in its scope an investigation of the availability and uses ofliquid as well as solid fuels, for the original outline of the fuel-testing investigations contemplated, as soon as the funds would be available, a study of the liquid-fuel resources of the country and the making of related researches to determine how these resources could be utilized with greatest efficiency. Owing to the fact that many difficulties were being encountered in the adaptation of the heavier fuel oils for convenient use in internalcombustion engines, it was deemed best to begin the investigation of liquid fuels with tests of gasoline, a fuel in more or less general use. When this investigation began, the extensive introduction, especially by foreign powers, of liquid fuels for small naval craft had awakened much interest. However, the quality of gasoline was reported to vary materially in different countries and the quantity available was said to be rapidly decreasing, with the probability of a prohibitive increase in price. At the same time the claim was made that denatured alcohol, of fairly uniform quality, could be procured in all parts of the world, that unlimited quantities could be readily produced at a low cost, and that this fuel could be used much more efficiently than gasoline in internal-combustion engines. Such statements naturally led to a widespread belief that the time was near at hand when denatured alcohol would entirely displace gasoline as engine fuel. Therefore, the first investigations of the liquid mineral fuels logically embraced a careful series of comparative tests of gasoline and denatured alcohol in engines. A series of over 2,000 such tests was conducted at the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va., details of which are given in the following pages. The report is published by the Bureau of Mines because of the transfer of the fuel-testing investigations to this bureau.

"One of the main functions of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as authorized by Congress, is to investigate safety and health conditions, to disseminate information regarding safe and unsafe practices in mining, and to aid in improving safety and health conditions of mining communities and in promoting the welfare of the miner. Among several methods of reaching the miner and interesting him in safety work, perhaps the most effective is through the 11 mine safety stations and 11 railroad cars known as mine rescue, or more correctly, mine safety cars.Frequently, the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information regarding the purpose, equipment, personnel, and construction of its safety cars used in the field service. It is the intention of this circular to present to the mining public in particular, and to the public in general, some definite information regarding these safety cars and their functions.The cars are operated throughout the mining fields of the United States and are headquartered as follows (see fig. 1): Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. M.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa; Car 11, Anchorage, Alaska.One of the most important purposes of the U. S. Bureau of Mines safety cars is to render service at mine fires and explosions where human life is endangered. State mine inspectors and other interested persons are supplied with itineraries of the car operating in their districts from time to time, so that they may know at all times where the car can be found in case of emergency. When these disasters occur the car may be reached direct or through its field headquarters, and upon receiving word of a mine disaster, or request for assistance, it immediately proceeds to the scene of trouble. Frequently a special locomotive is supplied by the railroads and in many instances the movement of the car is given the right of way over all other railway traffic. Upon reaching the destination, the facilities and personnel of the car are immediately available for rescue and recovery operations.Following most mine disasters a thorough investigation is made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and a confidential report is submitted to the operator. The information gained in this manner from a large number of mine fires and explosions, together with the knowledge gained from the experimental work carried on at the Experimental mine of the bureau at Bruceton, Pa., serves as a basis upon which the bureau is able to recommend preventive measures whereby similar occurrences may be averted. The bureau car is often used as headquarters for the investigating engineer when such an examination is being made."

"SUMMARYA preliminary examination of the Buena Vista iron deposit was made in June 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines. Subsequent examinations were made by D. W. Butner, of the Bureau, in March 1943, and by the author in July 1944, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling. Work on the project was done during the period March 28 to May 26, 1945.Property holdings, comprising 16 claims known as the Buena Vista group, are situated in sec. 4, T. 24 N., R. 34 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, north Churchill County, about 37 miles east of Lovelock, Nev.Three diamond-drill holes totaling 575 feet were drilled; 45 small pits and ten trenches, totaling 435 linear feet, were excavated, and 84 channel samples totaling 862 feet were obtained under supervision of the Bureau.Purpose of the project was to determine the possible downward extension of the mineralized sections exposed in the outcrops and to determine grade of the ore.Bureau work was confined to one claim only - the Iron Mountain."

"INTRODUCTION A considerable part of the metallurgical work of the Precious Metals Section comprises ore-testing experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts on areas. Projects authorized by the Bureau and assigned to the Precious Metals Section generally include only those ores or tailings in which the precious metals are the main valuable constituents; however, there are also included ores that contain strategic or critical metals in addition to the precious metals. The recovery of strategic and critical minerals is the most important phase of the treatment of this latter class of ores. However, if a considerable percentage of the precious-metal content of such ores can be recovered without complicating the flow sheet too much, it may be possible to treat an ore for the recovery of strategic or critical metals that could not otherwise be treated at a profit.Standard testing procedure involving cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity concentration, and flotation, or a combination of these methods, is employed in the greater part of this work. However, as the complexity of the ores furnished for this work has increased, it has been necessary to include special applications of standard procedures in many instances, Standard methods of conducting tests and the purposes of the work as a whole have been discussed in previous reports 4/ of ore-testing studies. In the present report, whenever it has been necessary to apply some special phase of standard treatment, this has boon explained in detail in that particular section of the report."
