This report describes Bureau of Mines research that led to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful proof-of-concept testing of an improved stench fire-warning system for underground noncoal mines. Stench systems are the most widely used means of warning driers in underground noncoal mines of fires or other emergencies. A stench system alerts miners that an emergency condition exists by injecting an odorant into the mine air. Although stench warning systems have been used successfully for over 60 yr, present systems suffer several serious shortcomings, including odorant toxicity, unreliability of warnings, widely varying stench concentrations, and others. In 1980, the Bureau began a research program to upgrade the stench warning system. The resultant system overcomes the deficiencies of existing systems by substituting tetrahydrothiophene for the commonly used ethyl mercaptan stench odorant, and through the use of a specially designed stench injector. The improved injector reliably meters stench fluid into either ventilation-air or compressed-air streams at a precisely controlled rate. Prototype hardware has been fabricated and proof-of-concept tested under bath laboratory and in-mine conditions.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 49,875 acres of the 54,833-acre Big Jacks Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-7C) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Owyhee County, ID, about 15 miles southwest from Bruneau, ID. No mining districts are in the study area, but part of one placer claim, located in 1924, extended into it. The northern portion of the area was covered by oil and gas lease applications; all were cancelled prior to 1985. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Big Jacks Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

The overall objective of the subject contract was to investigate the application, economic, and safety considerations of electrical-shock prevention techniques applied to surface and underground mines. Volume I of the four-volume final report starts by summarizing all research performed, and synopses of the three other report volumes are included. The balance of this volume concerns one major task of the contract, the protection of maintenance personnel. After specifying the scope of work for the task, electrical is defined, and needed ground-fault relay characteristics to prevent ventricular fibrillation are established. This is followed by an analysis of alternating-current systems, a comparison of these systems with respect to body currents, and the advantages and disadvantages of the various ground-fault protection techniques. An analysis of direct-current systems for off-track vehicles is then covered. These analyses form the basis for the research recommendations which along with suggestions for future research, conclude the report volume.

As recently as the late 1920's there Were few indications that a 15-million-dollar-a-year industry would ever grow out of the mineralogic curiosity vermiculite. Today, it is an important industrial commodity, used primarily as an insulating material and lightweight aggregate, but with a wide range of other applications. The quantity of crude vermiculite produced and used in the United States increased 14-fold in the 17 years between 1935 and 1951. The vermiculite minerals are of secondary origin, formed by hydrothermal alteration of an ultrabasic igneous rock, generally pyroxenite, or by alteration of phlogopite or biotite mica or possibly other similar minerals. According to different authorities, vermiculite may originate either by direct hydrothermel means, by the weathering of biotite or phlogopite, or by a combination of these two agencies. Vermiculites frequently occur at or near the contacts of an acid intrusive rock, especially a pegmatite dike, with a basic or ultrabasic country rock.

Coal bumps are brittle, violent failures associated with high stresses and competent host strata. To study bump mechanisms, conditions in the vicinity of a deep longwall mining face in bump-prone strata were monitored using three discrete systems. First, a microseismic monitoring network recorded mining-induced seismic events throughout the mine and surrounding strata. Second, pressure variations and distributions on the longwall shield legs across the face were recorded. Last, tomography surveys imaged seismic transmission properties ahead of the face. Results from the three systems were correlated in an effort to increase understanding of mining-induced stress redistribution and bump potential. An initial, one-week study showed that the correlation between averaged tomogram values and seismically active areas had a coefficient of correlation (R) of 0.89. Further results of these studies demonstrate that the tomography system is capable of imaging heavy shield-leg loading and bump-prone conditions prior to them disrupting the face operations.

The report is concerned with the issue of the possible transfer of U.S. and other developed country deep ocean mining (DOM) technologies to developing countries. This subject is one of several major issues in current UN Law of the Seas negotiations. As background to the subject, the report provides a detailed critique of the various terms and conditions pertaining to technology transfer in recent negotiating texts. It also provides a description of the relevant DOM technology, sources of innovation, and methods of proprietary protection. Functional requirements for viable technology transfer are developed and used as a basis for the definition of alternative levels of programs and implementation approaches, including required changes in the negotiating text. The consequences of these technology transfer options on the various parties are investigated.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. Gaseous products resulting from rapid pyrolysis of coal and coal/inhibitor mixture's by a ruby laser and a flash-tube were monitored on-line by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The distribution of stable gases from the coal is not Greatly influenced by the addition of small quantities of powdered flame inhibitors. Preliminary studies of the reaction of elementary radicals with coal and coal/inhibitor mixtures are described. The different types of experiments are discussed with regard to possible modification and application to studies of flame inhibitor action.

No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

This report describes the preliminary results of a Bureau program to develop and test an inexpensive grout for full-column support of roof bolts. Various inorganic grouts were tested in both cartridge and slurry form. Tests were also performed on methods of water packaging and on the effect of fillers on the grout strength. Results showed that some grouts had poor early strength and exceptional mid-to long-term strength. Laboratory tests have shown that rapid-setting inorganic grout could be an economical replacement for resin bolts if the short-term strength could be increased. Further development to improve its early strength would need to be tested in the laboratory and underground to prove its potential for the mining industry.

Techniques are described for recovering about 80 pct of the cobalt and nickel contained in superalloy scrap by anodic dissolution of the scrap and simultaneous electrodeposition of a pure cobalt - nickel alloy at the cathodes in an electrolytic cell partitioned by permeable diaphragms into separate anode and cathode compartments . Superalloy scrap was alternatively prepared for subsequent anodic dissolution either by melting and casting massive scrap into suitably sized anodes , by packing moderate - sized discard scrap in inert metal baskets that subsequently served as anodes , or after concentrating the superalloy portion of grinding debris , by magnetic separation to reject corundum or other abrasives , slagging any remaining abrasives from molten grindings , and finally casting the superalloy metal into anodes . In the processing , purified electrolyte -- 1 N in NiSO4 and in NiCl₂ , and 0.1 N in CoSO4 and in CoCl2 --was charged to the cathode compartments and discharged from the anode compartments at a rate sufficient to overcome the backward migration of ionic impurities from the anodes to the cathodes . Discharged electrolyte was purified by reacting it first with SO2 and next with limestone , and then recirculated to the cathode compartments , in which a 50 pct cobalt - 50 pct nickel alloy was deposited on either blanks of stainless steel or starting sheets of cobalt - nickel alloy . The process was made self - sustaining by either adding H2SO4 to the catholyte feed to throttle the rate of cobalt - nickel deposition , thereby compensating for the slower rate of cobalt - nickel dissolution from the anode and losses occurring in electrolyte purification , or alternatively , adding H₂SO4 to

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. The Bureau of Mines investigated extraction of aluminum from aluminum-silicon alloys as a means of utilizing domestic aluminum silicate ores for aluminum production. Aluminum was extracted from aluminum-silicon alloys by electrolysis in molten electrolytes of NaCl-KCI-AIC13 and NaCl-KCI-AIF3 in a laboratory-scale cell. Six alloys with aluminum contents ranging from 20 to 87 percent aluminum were tested, and aluminum products of primary grade or better were obtained. More than 80 percent of the aluminum was recovered with current efficiencies as high as 91 percent. Recovery of a metallurgical-grade silicon product from the anode residue by an acid leaching procedure was possible with the 50-50 and 65-35 Al-Si alloys.

Crude shale oil produced by underground retorting of Green River Formation oil shale was hydrogasified over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst at operating temperatures ranging from 800° to 1,300° F, pressures of 500, 1,000, and 1,500 psig, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.02 volumes of oil per volume of catalyst per hour (Vo/Vc/hr). At a temperature of 1,300° F and pressure of 1,500 psig, 94 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas containing 72 volume-percent methane. With two reactors in series at a temperature of 1,170° F in reactor 1 and 1,260° F in reactor 2 and a pressure of 1,500 psig, 97 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas with a methane content of 75 volume-percent. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was hydrogasified at operating temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,400° F at a pressure of 500 psig over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst. Similar experiments were made with an empty tubular reactor. The data indicate that gasification reactions in the presence of a cobalt-molybdate catalyst change from predominantly a catalytic (carbonium ion) reaction to predominantly a thermal (free radical) reaction at temperatures greater than 1,100° F. The data also indicate that a reaction temperature of 1,350° F is necessary at the space velocities used in this investigation to make a synthetic natural gas (methane content of 90 volume-percent) from in situ crude shale oil.

This report is an engineering-economic evaluation of alternate methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. It consists of evaluations of parting stowing techniques applicable in a representative, thick seam western United States mine. Methods are examined for their potential implementation, and an estimated operating cost per yard of material moved is developed. The methods are of two categories castback or haulback. Haulback methods use truck haulage except With scrapers, and the castback methods are a direct stowage with no intermediate haulage equipment. Possible equipment combinations include draglines, shovels, hydraulic backhoes, bucket wheel excavators, scrapers, and front end loaders. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the effective competetiveness of the various alternatives.

This report on the bibliography of zirconium has been confined to those publications and patents that appear to be useful in the commercial development of the metal, both the malleable and the nonmalleable. The methods of production have been stressed and special attention has been given to the alloys. Compounds of importance, like the oxide and chloride, for the manufacture of the metal or of the alloys have been considered. The use of the oxide in refractories anal in the glass and porcelain industries has been omitted. The present survey is critical; that is to say, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effectiveness of suggestions made in the literature. The exhaustive work of Marden and Richy, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 186, published in 1921, has been taken as a base to start from with the intention of bringing the subject up to date with material published in the last 24 years. During this time there was considerable 'advance in the preparation of the metal and Its alloys, and in the development of new uses. On the other hand, there was little progress in the methods of decomposing the ores, so that the chapter on this latter phase is necessarily short.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the exploeibility and ease of ignition of acetylene is important in connection with investigations by the Bureau of Mines and others seeking the causes of explosions in medium-pressure acetylene generators.A previous report 6/ gave preliminary results of an investigation made by this Bureau to determine the causes of these explosions. This report indicated the need of amending Federal specifications for ""1/4 by 1/12"" carbide to reduce the amount of fine sizes permitted under the specifications then in force. Tests described in the above report showed that certain sizes of carbide may, under certain conditions, attain excessively high temperatures when acetylene-water vapor mixtures are passed through carbides for extended periods.Federal specifications P-0-101, Amendment 5, June 28, 1944, are now in effect. These latest specifications permit a maximum of 7 percent of ""1/4 by 1/12"" carbide by weight to pass through a 0.0661-inch sieve and a maximum of 2 percent to pass through a 0.0555-inch sieve. Experience has shown that these specifications have insured a safer size range of carbide for medium-pressure acetylene generators.Although the improvement in the size range of the carbides has aided in the prevention of explosions, there have been explosions in which the carbide used at the time of the explosion met the latest Federal specifications."

Horizontal holes are drilled underground into coalbeds to control methane flow from ribs and active face areas and to make gas pressure measurements in coalbeds. Gas pressure measurements are made by drilling the same hole incrementally. After each increment, the hole is filled with some type of packers and allowed to reach equilibrium before a gas pressure reading is taken. As the length of hole increases, more packers are required to effect a seal and obtain a reliable pressure measurement. Problems have been encountered in obtaining satisfactory packer seals due to the friable nature of the coalbed. New methods of packing the holes must be used. Therefore, this project was established to evaluate materials and develop a new technique in which a semiliquid and/ or rigid type grout could be placed in the hole to provide satisfactory sealing.
