This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was clone through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will he useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetimes. As part of a national canvass of water use the Bureau of Mines compiled data on water requirements in the petroleum and natural gas industries for the calendar year 1962, specifically in well drilling, secondary-recovery operations, and natural gas processing plants. Total new water use in the petroleum industry of the United States, excluding refining, was 5.3 billion barrels. Secondary-recovery operations and natural gas processing plants required about 2.5 billion barrels of new water input; each of these requirements was about eight times greater than that for well drilling. Total use, including recirculated water, was 45.3 billion barrels of which 3.4 billion barrels was consumed. The greatest use of recirculated water was for natural gas processing, amounting to 38.2 billion barrels. Projections of total water use show that by 1975, 75.4 billion barrels will be used by the petroleum industry, of which 10.2 billion barrels will be new water. By 1985, the total use requirement will be 92.8 billion barrels, of which 13.1 billion barrels will be new water.

Thermodynamic data for selected metal sulfates were critically evaluated and compiled as part of the Bureau of Mines program to provide a scientific base for use in developing new technology and predicting the feasibility of new processes. Values for Cp°, S°, H° - H°298, -(G° - H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature are given in tabular form. Thermodynamic data were compiled for VOSO4, Cr2(SO4)3, MnSO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, CoSO4, NiSO4, Cu2SO4, CuSO4, CuO-CuSO4, ZnSO4, and ZnO-2ZnSO4, together with their stable hydrates.

In 1987 and 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 3,100-acre Borah Peak Wilderness Study Area (10-047-004) and a 708-acre parcel adjacent to the north in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Custer County, ID, about 18 mi northwest from MacKay. The study area lies along the western foothills of the Lost River Range and is underlain by quartzite, sandstone, shale, argillite, dolostone, and limestone. The Lost River fault, a major active fault, lies along the length of the study area. Large alluvial fans spread out from valleys originating east of the study area.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heat¬ing value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions./ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made.Analyses of the delivered coal and ""tipple"" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.The Government purchased approximately 5-1/2 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1951. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 10,700 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications s been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications contain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The use of Diesel fuel as a source of power is continuing to increase in the United States. The latest available figures indicate that refineries are delivering in excess of 10,000,000 barrels of this type of fuel per month. Factors contributing to this increased consumption are conversions by a number of railroads from steam to Diesel locomotives and the growing use of Diesel engines in buses, trucks, tractors, earth-moving machinery, water craft, and stationary power plants. The increasing importance of Diesel fuel has led to a need for more information on its characteristics, particularly on the grades and qualities currently being marketed. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuels produced in refineries in this country. Samples of Diesel fuel were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions from the Motor-Fuels Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied am compiled as shown in the tables of this report. The first survey was made in 1950 and was published as a Bureau of Mines report. The present report shows the results of a similar survey made during 1951.

The objectives of this study were to: (a) determine the state of the art for the control effectiveness of various chemical dust suppressants, (b) field test the effectiveness of the dust suppressants, and (c) develop technical guidelines for selecting and implementing cost effective tailings pond dust control programs. Chemical stabilizers evaluated under field conditions were: Coherax, Calcium Lignosulfonate, Nalco 656, 655, and Magnesium Chloride. Testing in the field utilized a portable field in-situ wind tunnel. The wind tunnel was placed on the tailings surface and simulated wind speeds of up to 80 mph were used to determine wind erosion threshold velocities. Emission rate testing was performed with the wind tunnel through the use of a real-time cascade impactor. A control cost effectiveness evaluation was performed to determine how efficient the chemical stabilizers were on a dollars expended per acre basis.

A new generation of hydraulic mine support prestressing devices has been developed. These thin-walled steel shells are machine-welded and can be inflated with water or any liquid to provide prestressing for a wide variety of roof support products ranging from Can supports to props and cable bolts. With an expansion capability of several inches, depending on the geometry and size of the unit, they can also establish roof contact eliminating the need for wooden wedges or crib blocks that are commonly employed with several standing roof support products. Capable of withstanding pressures from 1,000 to 6,000 psi, these cells are able to transfer roof loading into the support structure without rupturing. A recent development has been the addition of an inexpensive yield valve that provides control of the maximum pressure and load development on the support. This paper examines the performance capabilities of these inflatable prestressing units and the impact they have on the performance of various support systems, including an evaluation of the overall stiffness of the support system and the load control during yielding of the prestressing unit. Recommendations are made regarding the design requirements of the prestressing unit to optimize the support performance. A summary of mine applications using this technology is provided with general comments regarding their impact on ground control.

The fourteenth National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest we;; held at the State fairgrounds, Columbus, Ohio, October 2, 3, and 4, 1951. The meet, the first such event in 21 years, was under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association and was sponsored by the National Coal Association, the United Mine Workers of America, and various State mine-inspection departments. The cooperating agencies that contributed to make the meet a success, in addition to the National Coal Association and the United Mine Workers of America, were the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Ohio Division of Mines, West Virginia Department of Mines, Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and the Columbus Convention Bureau. SUMMARY Fourteen teams from 6 States participated in the mine rescue contest, and 55 teams from 9 States competed in the first-aid contest. Only one of these teams entered as a combination team, that is, participating in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are listed in table 1.

This Bureau of Mines laboratory research demonstrated that building bricks meeting ASTM specification C62-66 for grades SW and MW of FBS-type bricks can be produced from waste copper mill tailings. Waste tailings from accumulations at Magna, Utah, Anaconda, Mont., and Hayden, Miami, and San Manuel, Ariz., were dry-pressed into bricks, and the products were tested in accordance with ASTM Designation C67-66 on sampling, and testing of brick. An evaluation derived from pilot-plant production of similar brick at the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University indicated the production cost to be about $34 per 1,000 bricks. Utilization of such mill tailings on a commercial scale would eliminate the need for digging new pits for brick raw material production, conserve natural resources, and simultaneously remove potential sources of air pollution.

One area of study for the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate how loss control can be used as a foundation for mine safety training. After an initial review of the principles of loss control, the instruments often used for worker/worksite appraisal, such as incident reporting, analysis, and investigation, workplace observation, worksite inspection, and safety audits and checklists were evaluated for their effectiveness. The findings were then applied to the continuous-miner worksite at several mines to modify the techniques for use in a highly dynamic man/machine work environment. Before the information gathered from the review of the various continuous-miner worksites was presented at the annual retraining sessions at five mines, a trainability analysis procedure was developed to separate training shortcomings from those problems resulting from improper equipment design or unsatisfactory working environments. Also, several microcomputer-based training programs were developed to aid in conveying the loss-control concepts to the trainees. Finally, the results from the implementation and evaluation of the loss-control-based training programs were documented, including the complete training script for one of the case-study mines. The procedures outlined in this study will aid mine training specialists in developing focused, pro-active accident-prevention strategies and training programs that are based on sound loss-control principles.

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. The Bureau of Mines studied the costs of transporting fossil fuels, coal, and residual fuel oil from areas of production to consumer regions. Transportation data were stratified by type of carrier, size of shipment, and distance to determine what general effects these variables have upon transportation costs. Economics of haul for coal exist for longer versus shorter distances, and for larger versus smaller trainload sizes. Tanker and barge transportation of residual fuel oil does not show economies of haul for longer distances. It is shown that tanker size and seasonal variation are primary factors influencing the cost of shipping. Railroad transportation data show that coal from western coalfields could be competitive with foreign residual fuel oil in selected midwestern fossil fuel markets. However, the western coal would not be competitive in the New England and the eastern seaboard energy markets.

On the basis of world production data alone, 1985 appears to have been a year in which the world&apos;s mineral industry took another step upward in its recovery from the very poor years of 1981, 1982, and early 1983. Despite a drop in the output of crude oil, which was the single most significant crude mineral product from the viewpoint of value, the estimated value of world crude mineral production advanced by 3.4% to about $1,054 billion constant 1983 dollars, with output increases logged for nearly two-thirds of the commodities and forms of commodities for which the U.S. Bureau of Mines calculates a total world output. However, the economic well-being of any industry or group of industries cannot be measured solely in terms of the volume and/or value of its production, and examination of statistics reflecting other aspects of mineral industry performance shows that 1985 was a less than ideal year in many respects. In the case of consumption of mineral commodities, although there were gains registered in diverse sectors such as iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizer materials, solid fuels, and gaseous fuels, there were also proportionally small but notable declines in use among the older major nonferrous metals (copper, lead, tin, and zinc) and in the all-important liquid fuels. In the case of international trade in mineral commodities, although comprehensive data for 1985 were not yet available, there were indications that the value may well have fallen below the estimated 1984 level of $632 billion, although the volume may have increased slightly. This, if true, would be chiefly the result of declining prices of mineral commodities, and indeed, price declines were noted for a number of significant materials in terms of current dollars, and even more would register declines if calculated on the basis of constant dollars, adjusting for inflation.

The largest potential reserves of manganese in Nevada are in the Pioche district. To date, these large reserves of 10-to l2-percent manganese cannot be upgraded economically. Other large, low-grade deposits, such as the Virgin River and Boulder City deposits in Clark County, cannot be considered immediate sources of manganese. Reserves of the principal manganese deposits in Nevada, based on the most reliable estimates, total about 17 million tons analyzing 7.6 to 13.6 percent manganese. Most of the deposits are of a type that cannot be prospected systematically but have been prospected and developed in the course of productive mining operations. To realize production from low-grade deposits that are amenable to concentration, a ready market must be provided. Thus far, Government stockpiles have been the major outlet for these low-grade ores. Research and experimentation over a period of years have led to development of several processes technologically applicable to these low-grade ore bodies, but their economics is not sufficient to allow competition with imported ores on the open market.

Improved skips, with lightweight cylindrical bodies, have made a significant contribution to advancing mine hoisting technology. New concept skips of aluminum bodies with rubber lining; fiberglas bodies with polyurethane liners have been designed and fabricated for field testing at an operating mine. New design, adjustable guide rollers have shown improved ride characteristics with noticeably less wear. Major reductions have been made in stress levels and stress concentrations. Field experience has shown the practicality of the approach. Guide alignment has been measured using the Guide Alignment Measuring System (GAMS). Analysis has been applied to interpret the data. Field measurements in an operating shaft and a test tower have shown the agreement in data from GAMS and plumb wires. Reproducibility has been demonstrated. The data are useful to realign shafts, to use as s maintenance tool, and to evaluate the maximum safe hoisting speeds. The surveys are made at several hundred feet per minute and the system is self-contained. Dynamics of skip-guide interaction has been analyzed using the computer program SKIP II. The effects of speed, weight, type of guides, kind of misalignment have been studied. Resonance has been demonstrated and factors that eliminate resonance have been identified. Data from the GAMS surveys are applicable to the SKIP II program. Interaction between the hoist rope and the mine conveyance has also been studied. Computer programs and closed-form solutions are presented. Economic impact of lightweight skips is presented for an existing mine and for a new mine. Reduction in rope size has a profound effect when using a lightweight skip for the same capacity. Increased productivity can be realized by keeping maximum rope pull the same while increasing skip capacity. Examples and charts project the significant savings in capital expenditure for new installations.

As part of the broad program to improve the safety of underground coal mines, the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center sponsored several detailed studies on the inhibition of coal dust-air explosions. The present study was one of these. The goal of the research was to advance the development of improved coal-dust explosion inhibiting agents by determining, on a laboratory scale, the basic chemical processes involved in the inhibition of coal-dust flames by dry-powder agents. B. Our Approach Neither the basic molecular processes involved in coal combustion, nor the molecular mode of action of dry-powder agents, are known with certainty. Our approach, therefore, involved the direct determination, by sampling techniques, of species behavior in small, aerodynamically simple flames. To further aid in separating behavior of coal and dry-powder inhibitors, the latter were studied in CH4-air flames.
