The room temperature tensile properties of commercially pure titanium and seven titanium alloys prepared by skull casting were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. Data were compared with property data from tensile tests on wrought alloys of the same compositions in the as-worked and heat-treated conditions. The alloys evaluated were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-4V-lSi, Ti-6A1-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, Ti-6A1-6V-4Zr-4Mo, Ti-6A1-6V-2Sn, and Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn. Test specimens were prepared from both static and centrifugal castings and from plate fabricated by forging and rolling vacuum-melted ingots. The data indicate that the alpha and alpha-beta alloys have strength properties in the as-cast condition that are reasonably close to the strength properties of their wrought counterparts in the as-worked condition. An exception to this was the Ti-6A1-6V-4Zr-4Mo alloy for which insufficient data were available to form any firm conclusions. Fine-grained cast structures of Beta III (Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn) were shown to be generally stronger in the as-cast condition than the wrought alloy in the as-worked condition except for the yield strength of one structure that was unusually low. Heat treatment of this alloy produced properties that were unpredictable. Indications are, however, that optimization of heat treatment parameters for each cast structure could produce strength properties equal to that of wrought materials.

The mining methods described were developed during the last 30 years to copy with conditions peculiar to arctic and subarctic regions arid are now used by a large segment of the placer mining industry in Alaska. The operations described have been classified if m ii into three main categories: Those having sluices at a bedrock level, those having sluices above bedrock and those having mobile nonfloating washing plants (dryland dredges). Diesel-powered bulldozers and draglines convey or clevate gold-bearing gravel to the sluices, remove tailings, and strip waste gravel and other overburden. In the Pennsylvania anthracite region, the principal source of U.S. anthracite, refuse disposal problems are common since cities and towns are located over the anthracite measures. The Bureau of Mines surveyed refuse banks in the area, determining that 863 banks containing aver 910 million cubic yards of material occupy a total area of about 19 square miles. The vast bulk of the refuse is located within 2 miles of the traffic centers of incorporated c unities which have a total population of 625,000. Twenty-seven banks are burning, causing considerable distress in a number of communities.

In recent years development of instruments and equipment for determining subsurface pressures and temperatures in. gas and oil wells has made it feasible to obtain information that eras not available in the past on many gas-production problems. The material presented in this report illustrates particularly the value of subsurface-temperature data in the study of subsurface leakage from gas wells. An abnormal decline in the shut-in pressure of the Lone Star Gasoline Co. A. Jones No. 1 gas well in the southern part of the Buffalo (Tex.) field was observed during an interval when a negligible volume of gas bras being withdrawn from the reservoir. Wellhead-pressure readings indicated that the shut-in pressure of the well declined from 2,295 pounds per square inch gage on February 3, 1937, to 1,445 on February 12, 1935. Tests conducted by engineers of the Lone Star Gas Co. suggested that the subnormal pressure gaged on February 12, 1938, probably was not caused by a head of liquid in the well.

Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part 2, power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators, and hydraulic monitors; part 3, hydraulic, clamshall, ladder, and diaper dredges; part 4, haulage equipment, particularly industrial cars with locomotive or hoist as the motive power; part 5, conveyor belt, motor truck, pump and pipe line, towboat and barges, and aerial-trams haulage. This circular discusses the application of these various types of equipment to the different types of sand and gravel deposits and contains a reference bibliography. It completes the discussion of excavating problems.

Gob gas ventholes (GGV) are used to control methane inflows into a longwall operation by capturing it within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to understand the effects of various factors, such as drilling parameters, location of borehole, applied vacuum by exhausters and mining/panel parameters in order to be able to evaluate the performance of GGVs and to predict their effectiveness in controlling methane emissions. However, a practical model for this purpose currently does not exist. In this paper, we analyzed the total gas flow rates and methane percentages from 10 GGVs located on three adjacent panels operated in Pittsburgh coalbed in Southwestern Pennsylvania section of Northern Appalachian basin. The ventholes were drilled from different surface elevations and were located at varying distances from the start-up ends of the panels and from the tailgate entries. Exhauster pressures, casing diameters, location of longwall face and mining rates and production data were also recorded. These data were incorporated into a multilayer-perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) to model venthole production. The results showed that the two-hidden layer model predicted total production and the methane content of the GGVs with more than 90% accuracy. The ANN model was further used to conduct sensitivity analyses about the mean of the input variables to determine the effect of each input variable on the predicted production performance of GGVs.

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system's ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system's ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system.

On January 1, 1961 there were 311 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total crude-oil throughput capacity of slightly more than 10 million barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents net increases of one in the number of plants and 109 thousand barrels per day in total capacity. Contributing to this increase was the completion of two new plants, one in Hawaii and another in Michigan, during the year. At the beginning of 1961 the industry was building facilities which will increase this overall crude capacity by 36,500 barrels per day. As part of its building program, it was also replacing 329,000 barrels per day of its present capacity. Of the total 10 million barrel per day installed capacity, the industry reported 380,000 barrels per day as being shut-down on January 1, 1961. This included 11,500 barrels per day considered inoperable without extensive reconditioning.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was initiated to study and establish some of the chemical and physical characteristics of the condensed Mno-Si02 system. To prevent oxidation of the manganous ion, I atmosphere of purified helium was used in the furnaces. Solidus-liquidus curves and invariant points were established from melting-point determinations and were supplemented from data obtained by the static-quenching method. Experimental findings and data are for the intermediate compounds of tephroite and rhodonite with their respective eutectics represented at 25.5 and 37.2 weight-percent silica. Tephroite melts congruently at 1,347° C., and rhodonite melts incongruently at 1,286° 8.. A metastable transformation was determined to exist at the 1,347° C. isotherm, the congruent melting point of tephroite. A composite X-ray-diffraction pattern was formulated for synthetic rhodonite. This investigation contributes fundamental data leading toward a better understanding of the more complex slag systems.

"INTRODUCTION During the early 1920's world-wide attention was attracted to a group of oil fields (Mexia, Wortham, Currie, Richard, and Powell) later known as Mexia-Powell fault-line fields in Limestone, Freestonne, and Navarro Counties, Tex. Enormous yields of high-gravity oil from the wells in these fields resulted in drilling campaigns that quickly surpassed all previous records for rapid, intensive development of productive areas. The discovery of oil in the Mexia filed in September 1921 was followed quickly by the finding of oil in the Currie field in October. In January 1923 oil was discovered in the Powell field; in February 1924 the Richland field, midway between Currie and Powell fields, was brought in; and in November 1924 oil was discovered in the Wortham field, situated between Mexia and Currie fields. Each of the fileds was developed rapidly: wells were spaced closely and had high initial production; production peaks were reached early in the producing lives of the fields; subsequent decline was rapid, and there was early and rapid encroachment of edge water.In 1927 Bureau of Mines engineers, in their investigations a engineering conditions in oil,completed a preliminary study and published a mimeographed report 4/ on underground conditions in the Wortham field, and in 1928 they reported on production and development problems in the Powell Field. 5/ field."

"The problem of recovering potash from the mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O), occurring in large quantities in the salt beds of Texas and New Mexico, has been under investigation at the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines continuously since 1928. Most of the results previously obtained have been published in technical journals and in a series of Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.The experiments described in the present report were performed to ascertain whether a continuous countercurrent extraction of calcined polyhalite by hot water would yield satisfactory recoveries and concentrations of sium sulphate in the top liquor. Previous investigation by Storch 4 had shown that the rate of solution of uncalcined polyhalite was too slow to be of value in an industrial process, and Storch and Clarke 5 had demonstrated that calcination of the polyhalite greatly, accelerated the rate of solution in hot water, allowing most of the potassium sulphate to be readily extracted."

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Federal Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and nil stifle.5 The. Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because anal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form Will Ire valuable. A device for detecting carbon monoxide at ppm levels is described which is based on the measurement of infrared absorption at 4.65 microns. The unique feature of the nondispersive infrared instrument is contained in the optical design which includes a confocal cavity, increasing the effective optical path length by a large factor, thus greatly reducing the required package size. The cavity has the effect of reducing the total amount of radiation passing to the detector, but at the same time increasing the percent attenuation observed when adding CO, by a factor called gain. The radiation is chopped by a filter wheel which contains narrow band filters at 4.0 and 4.65 microns. The resultant signal produced by the pyroelectric detector is demodulated by the electronics to product an automatic gain control signal, proportional to the total radiation, and a difference signal, proportional to the CO present. Tests of a breadboard model are described which show cavity gains of 10 with noise levels equivalent to 2 to 10 ppm CO.

Reconnaisance samples of reported beryllium occurrences in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon were chemically and spectroscopically tested in a mobile laboratory. The two predominant types of occurrences were green beryl associated with Cretaceous intrusions and disseminated aquamarine associated with Tertiary intrusions. Although the beryllium content of known deposits in the Northwest is too low for economic development at present, total submarginal-grade beryllium resources in pegmatites are estimated to be 570,000 to 1,870,000 tons containing 0.024 to 0.167 BeO. A potential source of 500,000 to 700,000 tons of beryllium-bearing tactite in Idaho and Montana averages 0.033 to 0.080 percent BeO.

Complying with respirable dust standards is presently a critical problem for many longwall faces equipped with double drum shearers. Results are presented of research performed to increase the quantity and optimize the distribution of the water supplied to the shearer drums to control the shearer operator dust exposure. The effect on the total respirable dust produced by the shearer was also examined. During the research effort, a simple and inexpensive manually controlled valve system was designed and implemented on a shearer to distribute the water supplied to the shearer drums. Research showed that increases in water quantities are beneficial but associated pressure increases may induce respirable dust boilover negating potential advantages. Other essential parameters such as location of shearer operator, outside spray orientation and air quantity were considered in the evaluation.

The effect of water infusion on the flow of methane and on the production of dust was investigated at an active face in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The average total flow of methane at the face decreased by approximately 79 percent, whereas the flow from the ribs increased about 24 percent after infusion. On the day after infusion, dust concentrations appear to have been reduced; however, the presence of large quantities of rock dust obscured the results on the following days.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health partnered with the water well industry to develop engi­neering control technologies and training products to address noise exposure at the job site. Noise­induced hearing loss continues to be a problem in the well drilling industry. Research con­ducted by NIOSH found that air rotary drill rigs produce sound levels more than 90 dB(A) over the course of an eight­hour workday. Sounds levels above 90 dB(A), identified during hammer drilling and the hammering of casing, exposes workers to levels that can damage hearing. A typical air rotary drill rig provides no barrier, for noise and dust pro­tection, between the drill’s control panel and the drill stem. The development of a partial cab is the clearest example of NIOSH’s research partnership with the water well industry. NIOSH researchers determined that an engineering noise control to protect the oper­ator at the rig’s control panel would be effective, based on typical work site conditions. Many surface rigs do not have full cabs as a result of the original equipment manufacturer design or the high cost of aftermarket products. Developed as a partial cab, the NIOSH engineer­ing noise control design addressed stakeholders’ needs associated with cost, transport, and worker usage (Figure 1). Field tests found the partial cab effective in reducing sound levels at the rig’s control panel, a typical location for a drill rig operator. Sound levels at the control panel were reduced from 104 to 96 dB(A) (Figure 2). Coupled with continued use of personal protective equipment, such as hear­ing protection devices, the partial cab can help to reduce noise exposure. NIOSH researchers created a CD with informa­tion about noise exposure and the partial cab. Most important to well drilling companies is information on how to construct and attach the partial cab to drill rigs. The CD can be viewed on a standard computer and includes a video of the partial cab in use on a work site. Computer­aided design drawings are included on the CD and provide detail of the cab design as well as information on construction mate­rials and design details. Additionally, the CD provides background infor­mation on noise­induced hearing loss and hearing protection devices to increase knowledge about this occupational health concern. This information can be viewed by all company employees to help promote the partial cab’s importance to workers using the cab. More information on the partial cab noise control technology can be downloaded from www.cdc.gov/ niosh/mining NIOSH researchers also examined the health and safety training needs of workers in the ground water industry. It was quickly realized that most workers learn health and safety on the job and do not attend any sort of formal training. In addition, there is not a lot of time for daily “tailgate talks” or “shop talks” on health and safety issues. As a small business industry, the owner is often operating a drill rig along with his other employees. In general, new employees learn the job in an apprentice style sys­tem. As a result, workers and owners have few opportunities to access uniform health and safety information based upon the job — an outdoor work environment with daily change in work sites. With this information, NIOSH researchers devel­oped two products that deliver health and safety information to fit into the daily work of well drillers. These circulars are: Water Well Safety Bits. This booklet provides information in a “quick bites” style. It is pre­sented in a magazine format and can be left on
