Coal beneficiation with optical sorting has not yet been studied in detail. Optical separation of coal from gangue particles as a dry method can be used as an alternative to the other enrichment methods. Developments in optical and pneumatic technology put the optical sorting one step forward by means of applicability of the mechanical sorting to the mineral industry. Because of the inefficient separation performance, dry separation of coal is very limited in industrial applications. Therefore, optical sorting depending on color differences between two minerals can be introduced to coal beneficiation systems. In this study, coal samples obtained from Konya-Ilgin region (Central Anatolia-Turkey) were separated by optical sorter and the results were evaluated. The conventional floatability tests for Ilgin coal are conducted by collecting most of the feed material at 1.3-1.4 g/cm3 density range. Separation of Ilgin coals with heavy medium methods will not be possible because of poor density difference between coal and its impurities. There are important color differences among the floated particles at 1.3-1.4 g/cm3 density range. Therefore, Ilgin coal is subjected to optical sorting in a pilot scale optical sorter. Different size fractions were fed to the optical sorter and then rejected and accepted particles by equipment were analyzed. Ash content of the accepted particles was reduced to 25-35 % and ash in tail increases up to 55-60 % after sorting. Although most of the material floated at low densities, optical sorter separated the feed into two different quality products. This study has the potential to clarify applicability of optical sorting even to non-floatable coals and to provide an important contribution to both industrial applications and literature.

"Mineral processes are complex operations that have been modelled, controlled and simulated by diverse technologies. A review is given of some models of mineral processes in the literature. A new variation of a dynamic process model of flotation is presented. Process models, describing real and relevant physical variables, give a good understanding and good qualitative simulations, but can sometimes require prohibitively difficult and extensive parameter estimations. Process control is usually best done on operational plants by the fitting of system models, which can home in on the plant?s observability, controllability and optimisation. System models can be of a form amenable for use in appropriate techniques for controller design and implementation. The control of milling circuits is discussed in some detail. While simulators use models to predict dynamic or steady-state information, part of their strength lies in their ease of use and their ability to test different types of specifications. Some results are given for a flotation circuit simulator that can be made to solve virtually any permutation of specifications.INTRODUCTIONThe development and application of appropriate technology can lead to better operation of mineral processing plants in industry, so that substantial benefits can be obtained from improved throughputs, efficiencies and product qualities. This paper addresses some of the principles and methods used in the quest for the development and exploitation of such technology. Although the design of processes is often the motivation for modelling and simulation, this paper also targets the use of modelling and simulation for the control and optimum operation of mineral processes. The two processes given the most attention here are flotation and milling.Technologies used in mineral processing range from simple to very complex. Simple technical principles, such as mass and component balances, can yield some simple and effective strategies for modelling and control. However, minerals in particulate form have such complex physical and chemical properties that there appears no end to the complexity that emerges, as more and more factors are taken into consideration in the pursuit of better results and understanding. The situation is aggravated by the complexity of mineral processing plants, which have spatially variable conditions within process units, and complicated interactions between these units."

"Revealed and analyzed in the study are the ways of significant perfection of specific characteristics of the equipment, such as use of high-frequency voltage transformation to create a charger; use of pulse transformers, with core made of materials with high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as use of special ways to produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for electric-pulse installations, and suggested on this base is a strategy of further development and application of electric-pulse technologies. The different applications joint work schemes of voltage sources with two levels voltage and energy in electric pulse technologies are investigated. The possibility of increasing energy efficiency of destruction is shown."

Maximization of water recovery in thickeners is an essential step in the mineral processing industries. The Gol-E-Gohar iorn ore processing plant uses a center pier thickener with a diameter of 38 m and depth of 4 m. The feed rate is 50 t/h solids with a concentration of 5% (w/w), and it has been designed to provide an underflow containing 50% solids. The performance of the thickener was not as expected judged by the overflow stream containing 0.6% solids and water loss of 52 m3/h in the underflow. A criterion called the index of flocculation incorporating the perimeter-based fractal dimension of flocs, floc size, and settling velocities was proposed and used to determine the optimum flocculant dosage which was found to be 20 g/t. The fractal dimension of flocs in a pulp containing 5% solids was found to be between 1.16 (no flocculant) and 1.56 (40 g/t flocculant) which indicated highly branched and loosely bound structures for the flocs as flocculant dosage increased. At these conditions, the size of the flocs which was recorded by a digital microscope increased from 93 µm to 403 µm. A new feedwell with a special design with the aim of preventing flocs breakage and maximizing energy dissipation of pulp was constructed and installed. These modifications led to an increase in the thickener drivehead torque from 5% to 18% of the rated torque, indicating a higher bed depth. Finally, installation of a PID controller reduced the drivehead torque relative oscillation from 52.0% to 12.7%. These changes increased the solids concentration of the underflow from 49.0% to 56.9%, decreased the overflow solids concentration from 0.6 % to values smaller than 0.01% and resulted in a reduction of 27% in water loss in the thickener underflow.

The development of mining projects from discovery, exploration to actual production is a complex and time consuming process. Often poor process plant performance can be attributed to the use of non-representative samples and inadequate and/or unsuitable metallurgical test work when designing flow sheets during project feasibility study stages and specifying process equipment. Samples not representing the ore deposit and inadequate test work may lead to increased project development costs, since expensive test work and engineering may have to be repeated. It should be noted that for higher level engineering studies, larger scale test work is recommended and is a requirement for feasibility level studies. This would apply even if the technology is considered mature and well proven, as each ore body may have its own unique characteristics that, if untested at a larger scale, could result in significant design shortcomings, which will have to be rectified at later stages of the project, usually at significant additional costs

For optimization of diamond processing technology the influence of nanosecond high voltage pulses on mechanical and technological properties of diamond crystals and kimberlite rock-forming minerals (calcite, olivine, serpentine) was investigated. Using methods of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), microscopy and mikrohardness measurement the changes of structural, physic-chemical surface properties, and microhardness of minerals as the result of impacts, was studied. Non-thermal impacts caused a decrease of kimberlite rock-forming minerals microhardness in general to 40-66% as the result of surface microstructure destruction which is caused by formation of micro cracks, traces of surface breakdown and other defects. At the same time, the pulse energy impact on natural diamonds led to formation of B2 type crystal lattice microsift defects, elevated concentration of which increases the hardness properties of crystals. The obtained result indicates possibility of applying pulsed energy effects to improve the softening efficiency of diamond-bearing kimberlites rock-forming minerals without damaging the diamond crystals and ensuring their preservation by the subsequent grinding of ores. By IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that processing by hight voltage pulses causes a change of natural and synthetic diamonds surface functional cover composition. Short-term exposure (~ 10 - 30) leads to detachment and partial destruction of secondary phases mineral films on the surface of natural technical diamonds, increasing floatability and hydrophobicity of crystals. However, with increasing duration of treatment (~ 30 - 150) occurs surface hydroxylation (found by XPS for synthetic diamonds), as a result of diamond surface layer oxidation. The effect of increasing the natural diamonds flotation activity by 14% (from 47% to 61%) was experimentally established as a result of processing diamond crystals with nanosecond pulses (~ 10-50 sec), which indicates the principal possibility of using pulsed energy impacts to intensify the diamond flotation during processing diamond-bearing kimberlites.

Titaniferous ores serve as a major feedstock for the production of a white titanium dioxide pigment, a titanium metal and several other titanium-based products. Such ores exist mainly as heavy mineral sands. Ilmenite is upgraded to intermediate products namely synthetic rutile and titania slag through the synthetic rutile route and the reductive smelting route respectively. Tronox KwaZulu Natal Sands (Pty) Ltd recovers high titania slag via the reductive smelting process while slag is used as a feedstock to the pigment industry and furnace dust from the gas cleaning plant is disposed as waste. Previous investigations have shown that such furnace dust can contain significant amount of titanium-bearing minerals. This study looks at the characteristics of the furnace dust obtained from Tronox KwaZulu Natal Sands and investigates a possible high temperature recovery route in detail. The furnace dust was examined by using x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, microscopy and laser-diffraction size analyses. The characterization work showed that the furnace dust was rich in titanium and iron, containing 49.4 wt% ??????2 and 29.5 wt% ????2??3. These oxides were associated with Si, Mn, K, and Al oxides as impurities. A Carbolite® vertical tube furnace was used to investigate the extent of formation of titania slag and metallic iron on a laboratory scale at 1500°C, 1600°C and 1650°C. The laboratory reduction tests revealed that the slag samples with an equivalent titanium dioxide content ranging from 70.9 -76.9 wt% at 1600°C and 1650°C could be obtained. The Fe content of the metallic iron samples produced ranged between 93.0 and 97.1 wt%. The experimental results were found to be in relatively good agreement with the FactSage simulations, both of which demonstrated the potential of producing a titania slag and a metallic iron from the furnace dust.

"Ores of ferrous metals traditionally make up the bulk of recoverable reserves of solid minerals, and iron ore concentrates - in the processing and consumption. To obtain concentrates, three main methods are used: dry and wet magnetic separation, gravity and flotation. But even their integration into complex developed schemes with finishing operations often do not solve the problem of obtaining high-quality concentrates, which are necessary for powder metallurgy and electric steelmaking. Increasing the iron content in the concentrate by removing harmful impurities is the goal of this work. The possibility of reducing the operations of wet magnetic separation twice and completely eliminating concentrating operations in ball mills from the scheme of operations has been established. Selective leaching agents for each type of iron ores have been created, allowing to obtain concentrates with an iron content of not less than 68-69% and negligible concentrations of harmful impurities. Methodical recommendations for long-term storage of bioreagents in the active state, their immobilization and preparation in industrial conditions at the enterprise Nedropolzovatelja are developed. The proposed biotechnology, which allows to obtain high quality iron and conditional concentrates for harmful impurities, is protected by patents (RU 2537684 ""Method for fine-tuning of high-sulfur magnetite concentrate"" for magnetite ores and Pat. RU 2599068. For the industrial implementation of the new technology, organizational and technological measures have been developed in the system with Road maps for types of ores. The developed technology makes it possible to condition noble metal, tin, tungsten, nickel and other concentrates in harmful impurities such as arsenic, antimony, mercury, sulfur, copper, zinc, iron, phosphorus, manganese, in total 30 components that pass into solution under the influence of bioreagents.INTRODUCTION Consumption of various metals is steadily increasing every year, the volume of mining is constantly increasing. Ores of ferrous metals traditionally make up the bulk of the recoverable reserves of solid minerals. Enrichment technologies for iron-containing ores are reduced to the combination of three main methods: wet and dry magnetic separation, gravity and flotation. But even the use of complex advanced technological schemes often does not lead to the production of high-quality concentrates suitable for metallurgical processing. In this case, either lapping operations or effective technical and technological solutions are used in the main enrichment cycle. Widely used in practice methods for improving the quality of iron ore concentrates include the use of finishing operations (fine screening, reverse cation flotation), staging of concentrates, the use of more sophisticated equipment (separators with running magnetic field, magnetic gravity classifiers, column flotation machines)."

Bauxite is the principal source for the production of aluminum metal which has gained tremendous importance over the years due to its versatility as a metal capable of substituting almost all of the non-ferrous metals, non metals like wood, plastics, fibre glass, etc. and even steel in many applications. 90% of the high purity alumina needed for the production of this wonder metal in the world comes from bauxite. Even though alternate methods have been developed to produce alumina from non bauxite sources, owing to the high capital and operating costs involved, Bayer process still retains the superiority among all the methods by virtue of its simplicity and favourable economics. Bauxite continues to be the perfect ore for alumina production and its remarkable utilization makes it the most important non-ferrous ore. Most of the Alumina Refineries in the world process different types of bauxite and that too from varied sources. The technology employed in the Alumina Refineries depends on the Bauxite processed, with an ultimate view to produce alumina of required quality in the most efficient manner. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) had from time to time put forward bauxite specifications for metallurgical and other applications. However, these are found no fully based on alumina technology, present developments and availability of different types of bauxite in the country. The aim of this paper is to provide scheme of metallurgical grading of Indian Bauxite based on the background of alumina processing technologies and availability of various types of bauxite in the country. Efforts are made here to evaluate beneficiation techniques for central Indian Bauxite from the point of view of alumina production. This study is concerned with the behavior of bubble clusters in a well-controlled turbulent flow. We used a specially designed cell where the bubble aggregates could be formed and exposed to breakage by a rotating impeller. The effects of impeller speed and the concentration of collector on cluster behavior were studied. It was found that the size of the clusters increases with the concentration of collector used. We also found that although the clusters could easily be destroyed under the action of impeller, they could reform, especially at lower impeller speeds. It was observed that the size of the bubbles arriving into the impeller region in the absence of particles before breakage was considerably higher than the size of the clusters formed at the same impeller speed. It appears that both cluster breakage and re-formation take place simultaneously, and the extent of formation and regrowth is mainly determined by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the impeller speed.

In the recent past, a paradigm shift in terms of resource utilization and beneficiation practices is experienced by the Indian mining and mineral sector. Depleting iron ore reserves coupled with increasing demand for low-alumina iron ore fines to improve blast furnace performance in terms of productivity and reduced slag rate necessitate intensive beneficiation of iron ore. The task is even difficult for Indian iron ores, which are generally high in iron content and at the same time characterized by aluminous gangue. In 2006, M/s Tata Steel commissioned a state-of-the-art Jigging Plant (Batac Jig) at Noamundi Iron Mine (NIM), mainly to reduce alumina in iron ore fines. The jigging plant is incorporated in the existing beneficiation circuit to treat ?10+0.5mm size fraction of classifier fines. Over the course of plant stabilization while the plant could deliver desired ore upgradation and average product alumina, variability in terms of alumina content has been a concern. This paper discusses a case study of process parameters optimization in jigging operation to achieve consistent product quality while improving the effectiveness of gravity concentration for the beneficiation of Noamundi iron ore also to take care of inferior plant feed (input) grade year on year. The operating variables used to optimize jigging operations include bed height, pulsion and suction time, particle size, strokes, and plant throughput rate.

The results of mineralogical?technological studies of PGM mineralization in zoned mafic?ultramafic complexes of the Ural?Alaskan type are given. The most important technological specificity of PGM mineralization hosted in dunites is its occurrence only in the form of free mineral species with predominance of Fe?Pt alloys (ferrous platinum, isoferroplatinum, and tetraferroplatinum). Technological properties, grain size, and good opening of PGM ore in grain size class +80 µm make it possible to concentrate ore using gravity methods with stadial comminution and between cycle separation of relatively large grains and nuggets into high-grade concentrates at the early stage of disintegration. The purpose of this work is to present ?state of the art? mass balances closing strategies in ore treatment plants. It presents a brief history of difficulties and challenges ahead. The current methodology is based on usage of an expert system, which seizes and filters the plant data, analyzes situations of equipment stops and mostly instruments failures. It is still possible to internally create a strategy to check the data of an instrument failure. The system is coupled to software with a Lagrangian model of mass balance closure that receives the pre-treated data. Thus, the data goes through filtering and reconciling processes to generate a reliable mass balance of the ore treatment plant. This made possible to obtain a system that is able to tell the real productivity of a ore plant through reliable mass balances. Residence times on equipments are critical to the balance, thus, they require good logic to eliminate errors due to the characteristics of non-steady state. Among the next challenges is the inclusion of a ?soft sensor? as a replacement of an instrument required for mass balance closure.

Tumbling mill is an important unit operation in a mineral processing industry whose operation needs to be understood to make it an energy efficient unit. One of the important mill parameters is the impact spectra generated by collision of the moving charge mass on the mill shell. This process also generates mechanical vibration on the mill shell and propagates to the plumber block of the mill. In this work, we tried to understand the impact spectra by using different minerals such as Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ), Hematite and Quartz as mill feed of a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill. The said mill is of 1000 mm diameter and fitted with a force sensor on the mill shell and a vibration sensor on the plumber block. The analysis of the impact spectra was done by taking into consideration the peak impact force above a certain threshold value. It clearly shows that the impact force decreases as the particle size become finer irrespective of the mill feed material. This can be used as an effective tool by the mill operators to have an understanding of the mill product size reduction. The mechanical vibration tapped by a tri-axial accelerometer was analyzed by power spectral density analysis. The vibration signal analysis shows the variation in the power spectrum magnitude both at lower and higher frequency. It also shows inconsistency in case of BHQ where it shows a significant decrease in vibration at lower frequency and increase in vibration at higher frequency. Therefore, the impact spectra analysis is a better method compared to vibration analysis in understanding the mill product size reduction.

This paper presents the performance study of sag mill in the processing of gold ore. Deterioting ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the SAG mills. Today?s high capacity Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills expand vast amounts of energy and in doing so consume tons of shell liners and steel balls, while processing ore. Semi-autogenous (SAG) mill performance is influenced by ball charge, feed properties, shell, grate, and pulp lifter design. In the performance study of SAG mill, based on the results obtained it can be observed that SAG mill performed better at feed size +4 inch and grinding media consumption 0.90kg/mt. In the present study the effect of crusher bypass on SAG mill performance, an immediate drop of throughput ranging from 10-20tph is observed. Investigations over the application of hybrid comminution circuits with the High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), on the main comminution stage on the basis of the lime and cement industry, were presented in the paper. Two crushing circuits were investigated, the first HPGR-based and the other one, with conventional jaw crusher. The results presented in the article confirm that hybrid comminution circuits with the application of HPGR are innovative ones, and they assure achieving the technological and economic competitiveness in the mineral raw materials processing industry. They are much more favorable in terms of the final product fineness and capacity but insignificantly less effective about the unit energy consumption. Technological performance of conventional crushing circuit and HPGR-based one were also compared in lab scale. The circuit with HPGR application gives finer products both on crushing and grinding stages. The average particle size reduction obtained in HPGR-based circuit is as much as twice greater, comparing to the conventional crushing devices. Keywords: comminution, HPGR technology

Electrical disintegration (ED) was applied to Nantun coal (China) in order to improve liberation of coal substance for the pretreatment of producing “Hyper Coal” of which the combustion gas was planning to inject directly to turbine for power generation. It has been found that many cracks generated in the ED were existent at phase boundaries with mineral matters and liberation of coal substance became much higher than that in mechanical comminution methods such as roll crusher. Since the ED occurred more easily (with lower voltage applied) for the coals of higher mineral content, it is considered that this method could make a better contribution especially to comminute middling coals. We also found that the ED technique could apply not only single particles but also to coal particles assemblage, keeping almost the same or higher disintegration efficiency. In the mineral matters, Si and Al components were preferentially well liberated by the ED.

"The extraction of mineral values from ore requires liberation followed by separation steps. Liberation is achieved by size reduction operations which are energy inefficient processes typically dominating the energy consumption in a mineral concentrator. As the grade of ore reserves declines, future viability of mineral operations will be determined by energy costs of comminution. The application of high power microwave energy to secondary crusher products has been suggested as a possible commercially viable thermal treatment method for reducing comminution energy and improving value mineral liberation. Recent studies have shown that microwave pre-treatment of coarse sphalerite ore particles (> 5mm) at specific microwave heating energies (1-3 kWh/t), induces microfractures and creates new crack surfaces. This suggests that subsequent crushing of these microwave treated particles could yield enhanced liberation. However, limited studies have been carried out investigating the mode of breakage and the extent of enhanced liberation in that case. The objective of this study is to develop numerical methods for quantifying the extent of enhanced liberation and mode of breakage in crushed microwave treated and untreated particles. Sphalerite ore particles representing small (-5+4.75) mm, medium (-16+9.5) mm, and large (-25+19) mm HPGR and cone crushed particles were microwave treated at specific energies between 1-3 kWh/t. Cracks in the ore particles before and after microwave treatment were analysed with QEMSCAN and numerical models of the measured particles (before and after microwave treatment) were developed in MATLAB. The propagation of random and non-random cracks was investigated by simulating comminution of the modelled treated and untreated particles. Results of this study demonstrate that the breakage mechanism and the liberation of valuable minerals from gangue in microwave treated and untreated particles is significantly different. This study contributes to the development of numerical tools to quantify crack propagation in heterogeneous ore particles."

Laboratory and pilot-plant testing using a sample of gold-bearing semi-oxidized ore from a Russian deposit followed by a flow sheet and reagent flotation mode development to design a plant was carried out in IRGIREDMET in 2009-2010. According to the developed flow sheet low alkaline flotation conditions are recommended in order to activate the surface of sulfides. The pH lowering from natural (7.5-8.0) to optimal (4.6-4.8) value using sulfuric acid provides for an increase in gold recovery. Before CIL, a final flotation concentrate is pretreated using pressure oxidation. It was found that the use of recycled solutions from pressure liberation in order to create acidic conditions for flotation instead of sulfuric acid during pilot-plant testing is recommended. The flow sheet offers the detoxification of remaining pressure oxidation solutions together with the flotation tailings. The carbonates presented in the tailings significantly reduce the consumption of lime for detoxification and allows for the use of two tailings dams instead of three. The first is used for the tailings of flotation and pressure oxidation recycled solutions, which were detoxified together. The second tailings dam is used for detoxified cyanidation cakes of the flotation concentrate. It was found during pilot-plant testing that flotation under natural and acidic conditions provides for 88.9 percent and 93 percent gold recovery, respectively. 4.1Au percent increase recovery was achieved due to the reduction of gold losses with flotation tailings and better quality of concentrates.
