This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

Abstract This paper deals with the application of the cyanide process to recover gold from a pyrite concentrate produced by means of differential flotation. This concentrate before cyanidation contains from 0.09 oz. to 0.14 oz. gold per ton, of which only about 60 per cent is recoverable. The rest is so fine that it remains interlocked in the pyrite and therefore is not acted on by the cyanide. The concentrate also contains about 15 per cent pyrrhotite and 0.4 per cent chalcopyrite, both of which are cyanicides. The cyanicidal effect of the pyrrhotite is inhibited by preacracing the pulp with lime, and maintaining a high lime alkalinity during cyanidation. The effect of the chalcopyrice is reduced as far as possible by removing those particles which are free by means of a further flotation step immediately prior to cyanidation. This involves the flotation of some very fine material. After nullifying as far as possible these two cyanicides, the concentrate is cyanided directly, i.e., without being roasted. This leaves the pyrite available for subsequent sale as a source of sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, and the entire residue of the cyamde plant, amounting to about 500 tons per day, 1s now being disposed of in this way. Prior to deciding on direct cyanidation, a number of laboratory roasting tests were made. These showed chat, 1f proper control were exercised, a better recovery of gold could be effected from the roasted product than by the direct method of treatment. The tests also showed that the capital cost o the plant would be much higher than that needed for the procedure adopted. The possibility of subsequently selling the pyrite for its sulphur content would also have been eliminated. Introduction A previous paper has described in considerable detail the application of the flotation process to improve gold recovery from Noranda's milling ore, and in so doing has covered the production of an auriferous pyrite concentrate. The present paper deals with the recovery of gold by cyanidation from that concentrate. This gold, though intimately associated with the pyrite, can, for metallurgical purposes, be considered as all occuring in the native state.

"Typical mining operating costs can be divided between extraction (30 % to 70 %), comminution (30 % to 50 %) and separation (5% to 20% ). Cornminition process costs, representing an important contribution to mining operating costs, can themselves be divided roughly between energy (50 %) and linerkharge wear (50 %). Developing the ability of predicting mill wear will allow a more accurate estimation of wear costs. However, total media wear in a given ball mill grinding process is a product of three recognized wear mechanisms those being abrasion, corrosion and impact. Further, the contribution to total media wear of each of these wear mechanisms has not been well established. In this paper, a overview of abrasive, corrosive and impact wear mechanisms is made from which an empirical wear prediction procedure is proposed. Further, future directions in wear prediction research is outlined. "IntroductionThe mining industry has made slow but steady progress toward the automation of mineral processing plants over the last 35 years. The stimulus to automate is associated with important economic and hidden benefits, so that today, the latest in instrumentation and technology is being employed.This chapter assesses the status of instrumentation justified economically, defines levels of control and certain fundamentals of feedback control loops, describes typical sensors employed in concentrator circuits, summarizes control strategies employed therein, and briefly highlights trends in integrated plant control.Current Status of AutomationAs early as 1948, the mining industry began to show interest in automation, probably because of its close association with the petroleum industry. By 1958, some regulatory control had been achieved in various sections of a concentrator, particularly in crushing circuits. Successes were attributed primarily to the reliability of sensors employed in the corresponding control scheme. By 1961, computers had appeared on the scene, initially, for data logging purposes.From 1958 to 1965, very few new control strategies had been implemented. Guidelines in vogue at this time appeared to be:- Install proven automation, unless a good instrumentation department exists at the concentrator.- Do not bite off too much instrumentation at one time.- Do not purchase on price alone; instrumentation must function in the concentrator environment.- Do not purchase automatic control equipment to be fashionable.Such guidelines were employed1 because of a lack of: (a) quantitative process knowledge, (b) reliable primary sensors, (c) initiative to try something new, (d) trained personnel, and (e) understanding that older concentrators could justify automation in many situations."

HOLLINGER mining operations have required development by 24 vertical shafts having a total length of 28,160 feet. Seventeen of these are sunk from surface and seven are interior shafts. Four surface shafts and three interior shafts are now active and, excepting the recently completed new main ore-hoisting shaft, the remainder are either abandoned, or are used for passes or for ventilation. The new shaft bottoms 60 feet below the 3,050 level, but there is much work to be done before it is placed in service. The term 'shaft practice' is intended to include shaft construction and a general treatment o typical equipment. It is a large subject for an organization the size of Hollinger and this paper is intended only to present the salient features. Noranda?s Brunswick mine is a 10 000 t/d producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400 m and 1200 m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio, an overall steeply dipping tabular shape, and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) have elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning. Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically.

"INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

"As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

"The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located in southeastern Manitoba, in the Lac du Bonnet granite batholith of the Canadian Shield. It was constructed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to conduct geotechnical research for the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, assessing the concept of permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste deep in plutonic rock.One of the primary objectives of the research program at the URL is to develop a nondestructive rock mass characterization method that can be used during siting, design and construction of a used fu el waste disposal vault. An experimental program was established to assess radar reflection profiling as a technique for fracture characterization in granite. The highly resistive, homogeneous nature of the Lac du Bonnet granite is ideal for the propagation of electromagnetic energy at the radar range of frequencies and water-filled fracture zones act as excellent reflectors because of their contrasting electrical properties.Radar reflection profiling was undertaken to characterize a major fracture zone located between 5 m and 10 m below Room 211 on the 240 m level of the URL. The profiling was done at a frequency of 120 MHz, on a 1m grid laid out on the bare rock floor of the room. Reflectors identified in the analog data were correlated between the profile lines, digitized, and a three-dimensional surf ace for each recognizable reflector was constructed. These surf aces were then compared with data obtained from the examination of numerous cores from adjacent boreholes intersecting the fracture zone. A very good correlation was found between the major radar reflectors and the most intensely fractured regions of the zone. Modelling studies also showed that a series of prominent shallow radar reflectors were caused by a borehole drilled close to Room 211."

"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

Most authorities agree that the dissolution of gold from an ore takes place according to the Elsner equation first stated in 1846. The main requirements for the dissolution reaction to proceed are:(1) that the gold be clean.(2) that the gold be exposed to the solution.(3) that the cyanide solution be active, i.e., not over loaded with impurities which could retard or inhibit the reaction.(4) that an adequate supply of oxygen be available (from air).When the above conditions are met, cyanidation becomes basically a mechanical operation.Minerals such as quartz, calcium carbonate are relatively inert to cyanide though they may give rise to mechanical troubles. Most ores present an assortment of chemical problems, depending upon the constituent present, which react to the solution to varying degrees. It should be borne in mind that minerals which are disturbing to the operation, though present in small amounts, usually exceed the weight of the gold by several hundred times. In addition, the application of flotation and other forms of concentration to gold ores, previous to cyanidation, concentrates not only the gold, but also the other heavy minerals and these complicate the chemistry of the process.

"Exploration and development of mineral resources in developing countries by Canadian-based multinational mining companies is becoming increasingly common. One problem being encountered is that the objectives of the governments of developing countries can differ from those of developed countries. These objectives are not always consistent with maximizing returns from the projects, which can create conflicts between the mining company's responsibility to its shareholders and the desire to be a good corporate citizen. This article discusses how a mining tax regime can be designed to make the social goals of a government consistent with the economic goals of the company.IntroductionAt the recent International Seminar on Mining Taxation organized by CIM and the United Nations there was considerable discussion about the role of international mining companies operating in developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the diversity of backgrounds of individuals attending the Seminar, there were different opinions about what this role should be.Government PositionRepresentatives of governments pointed out the strong desires of their countries for technology, high-level technical training of their workforce, increased employment, and development of social infrastructure. They pointed out that, to a large extent, these objectives could be more efficiently met by mining companies operating in the country than by the governments themselves. For example, a multinational mining company (""MMC"") would have extensive knowledge of the various technologies available, and would have performed a detailed evaluation of the mineral resources before choosing the most cost-efficient technology for that project. They would, therefore be in an ideal position to assist the country in importing and developing such technology. Similarly, the company could provide opportunities for hands-on training, both at the technical and managerial levels, which would otherwise be unavailable to the government."

Economists forecast that over the next 15 years its value will triple again. Canada is a basic and leading supplier of nickel, iron, copper, zinc, lead and uranium. It is also a major oil producer, leads the world in the production of asbestos and in five years will be the leading producer of potash, a basic constituent of fertilizer.It can be seen that Canada's wealth and economic progress lies in being a primary producer of economic minerals and in building secondary industries to manufacture finished products from these raw materials. Canada's future in the field of mineral production looks bright, with our resources just starting to be tapped. Outside of the large expanse of Soviet Russia, we are by far the world's most fertile mineral exploration area."

Compliance with Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) exposure regulation is currently performed using timeweighted average (TWA) sampling on underground mine workers. These samples are collected in the span of an entire shift and the resulting concentrations are compared to a legislated exposure limit. While this is very useful to determine the exposure level of an individual to DPM, it fails to clearly identify causes of exposure and highlight opportunities that could help reduce the exposure of workers in the course of the work shift. Real-time DPM monitoring measures the worker?s exposure as a function of time and helps identify circumstances where corrective actions can be taken or design changes can be made by the individual or the employer to reduce the overall exposure of the worker and peers. This work focused on obtaining DPM concentrations using a real-time polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitor. The aim was to demonstrate that this instrument, while not a direct DPM analyzer, was able to provide a concentration profile that could easily be linearly correlated to standard TWA elemental carbon measurements. In addition, several instances of improvements that could be implemented to reduce the exposure of underground employees were demonstrated.

"The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than approximately 45 degrees.As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result in less rock fall capacity.The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented."

Similarly to notions of constant capital/expenses in business or magnetization power for electric motors an energetic base load (E0) is always necessary to set up a mining process. Denominated as ?non-productive energy? or base load, (E0) is a constant component of the entire energy consumption of the process, while another component the ?productive energy? (Ep) is variable, being function of the production/throughput (M). By using these new concepts, the author creates an energetic model proposing a new method of assessing changes in mining processes (throughput) that can reveal possible energy savings (DSM component) or energy losses. Proposed mathematical model of assessing (E0) and energy savings by using ?Marginal Energy Usage Index? (MEUI) enables creation of historical benchmarks and direct on line energetic (efficiency) assessment of mining processes and/or equipments. The paper analyses the case of assessing possible energy savings that can be obtained by: ?? Improving efficiencies of various equipments (by retrofit) ? reducing E0 ?? Improving the process control or other process changes ? reducing Ep ?? Monitoring persistence of the adopted Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs). For the new plant design, the proposed method enables prediction of Customer Baseline in various mine/process configurations. The method could become part of a ?preventive action? in design process by offering a reliable tool of assessing additional financial effort (Incremental cost) when choosing various higher efficiency equipments and/or processes.

This objective recognizes the importance of being able to make use of all the functionality of arrays. You will be expected to know how to declare, construct, and initialize arrays.
