Thiobacillus ferrooxidans released copper from -400-mesh chalcopyrite at a rate of 54 mg/I/hr. Any flotation chemicals remaining on the concentrate did not inhibit the leach rate. Zinc rougher tailings were also leachable. With bacteria, 75 per cent of the zinc and 68 per cent of the copper came into solution. In the sterile controls, only 16 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the copper were released; 100 per cent of the copper and 36 per cent of the zinc were leached from pyrite cinders through the action of bacteria, and 17 per cent of the copper and 10 per cent of the zinc were solubilized in the sterile controls. Less than 0.027 per cent of ~he iron came into solution. The majority of the copper in a converter slag was acid-soluble, but a reverberatory slag responded to microbiological leaching. About 62 per cent of the copper came into solution, compared to 12 per cent in the sterile control. The various factors influencing the rate and extent of microbiological leaching are discussed.

The plugging effect of bacteria was investigated by injecting various concentrations of dead bacteria cells though sandstone cores. Pressure profiles along the cores were recorded periodically during the injection cycles. The plugging effect was analyzed using a plot of the ratio of reduced permeabilities to the initial permeability versus input volume. Results indicated that Tock permeability has little effect on plugging, but that the concentration of bacteria in the injection water has a significant effect on plugging characteristics. The pressure profile curves showed that bacteria penetrated several inches through the core but that the greater portion of the bacteria accumulated at the in-put end of the core.

The study of leached outcrops as an aid in determining the character of mineralization beneath the surface is in its infancy. Practically all the work on this subject up to the present has been applied to the 'porphyry' copper deposits of the southwestern United States. Some work has been done also on the zinc-lead solid sulphide deposits of the western United States. The question has been asked, "Can this study be applied, and would it have any practical application, in northern Manitoba?" When one realizes the size of the unprospected territory in this Province and the consequent need for a cheap and rapid method of interpreting the countless outcrops which occur in order to discriminate between valueless iron sulphides and valuable sulphides of the base metals, it is readily seen that the study is of great value if it can be applied with a reasonable degree of surety. Augustus Locke, well known economic geologist of the southwestern United States and a pioneer in the study of leached outcrops of disseminated copper ore, has written much on the subject. Messrs. Blanchard and Boswell in a series of articles have dealt with the leached outcrops derived from lead and zinc sulphides in the western United States. Since this paper is essentially a comparison between the leached outcrops of the southwestern United States and those of northern Manitoba with the purpose of testing the adaptability of the study in this Province, an outline of the criteria used in the southwest will be of value to the reader.

The area around Osisko lake, the Horne mine, and the town of Rouyn, in northwestern Quebec, presents a most interesting structural problem. The present discussion is confined to an area around Osisko lake, about six miles long and three miles wide, shown in Figure 1. The writers are particularly indebted to Mr. Thayer Lindsley, of Ventures Limited, who sponsored the investigation and gave permission to publish this paper. Mr. H. L. Base and precious metal refineries often produce effluent solution and slurry streams containing between 50 mg/L and several grams per liter of base metals. Metals have historically been precipitated from these streams with lime to produce effluent streams at pH values between 8 and 9. This effluent treatment process generally does not remove alkali and alkali-earth metals or halides efficiently and with more stringent environmental legislation, more sophisticated effluent treatment plants must be considered which could for example incorporate sulphate removal with ultra-filtration, or the SavminTM process, followed by reverse osmosis for the removal of halides. The flowrates of effluents are often high and if base metals can be recovered before neutralization, the revenue generated from this stream can reduce the cost to produce clean water significantly, and in the case where high concentrations are disposed of, result in a profitable operation. As an add-on to an existing the plant the recovered metal is upgraded and recycled to the plant, but the production of a saleable metal can also be considered. Technology selection for metal recovery depends on the composition and flowrate of the effluent, but could incorporate resin-in¬pulp or other ion-exchange technology; precipitation as sulphides, hydroxides or carbonates; or solvent extraction. This paper describes, as a case study, the technology selection process and uses data from Zincor. Zincor is a division of Exxaro Base Metals (Pty) Limited, a subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited.

A laboratory-scale batch extraction unit and operating procedure for studying the hot-water separation of bitumen from Athabasca tar sands are described. The extractor evolved from earlier units and has been in use by Syncrude Research for the past 10 years. By using a unit such as this, it is possible to study tar sand feed quality and the effects of chemicals on the hot-water extraction process, while process variables are held constant. Data are presented to demonstrate the importance of surfactants to the process and the interrelated role of inorganic bases and surfactants.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic to neutral solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated EH-pH diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur-water system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). "A numerical procedure based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is developed for rock blasting phenomena involving multiple intersecting joints. In this procedure, an elasto-plastic damage constitutive model has been applied in the framework of SPH to simulate yielding response of the surrounding rock medium. In this paper, a square shape rock medium with centrally located emulsion explosive in a borehole is numerically blasted with and without the presence of two diagonal rock joints. The model is simulated by assuming all four sides of the rock medium as free surfaces. The paper elaborates the propagation of stress wave, expansion dynamics of gaseous products, and development of fracture, fragmentation of the medium and dissipation of energy due to damage.INTRODUCTIONDamage prediction of rock mass and its mean fragmentation size are of important to design blast parameters for a given explosive. Current blasting practice solely depends on empirical relationships between fragmentation sizes to those blast design parameters while mathematical descriptions of the physical laws governing the process of rock blasting are limited. A constitutive relationship based on properties of explosives and rock mass is of special interest because of its capabilities in describing the key features of rock fracture and fragmentation, resulting in understanding of the physical process involved in rock blasting. It is well known that blast-induced damage and fragmentation of rock mass occur due to detonation induced stress wave and product gas driven fracture propagation. Nevertheless, the fundamental mechanism of the failure process and the behavior of rock characteristics under these two different loading are not well understood in many cases, which are closely related to growth of fractures and interaction of cracks under different loading conditions.Continuum damage mechanics is considered to be appropriate to describe the failure process under such high-amplitude stress wave. Based on this approach, several theoretical models have been developed to analyze the dynamic damage of brittle material such as rock and concrete with microstructure (Chen, 1999; Taylor et al., 1986; Wu et al., 2004; Yazdchi et al., 1996). These models are mostly based on the theory of damage mechanics or fracture mechanics with some statistical treatment to incorporate random distribution of microcracks. In the application of fracture mechanics theory, sometimes it is difficult to estimate the micromechanical parameters such as crack density and fracture toughness in different modes. In this study, damage in rock material is evaluated according to the earlier model developed by Grady and Kipp (1980), which is a fracture model coupled with a material description for stress wave propagation to predict quantitatively fracture and fragmentation under explosive loading conditions."

"The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. The McArthur River deposit is a structurally-controlled unconformity-related uranium deposit. The mineralization is situated at the intersection of a pronounced fault zone, referred to as the P2 fault zone, and the unconformity between Paleoproterozoic Wollaston Group metasedimentary rock and Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Athabasca Group. Mineralization is variably hosted within the Athabasca Group fault wedge and the faulted basement, consisting of twelve zones covering a strike length of 2,700 m. The main P2 fault zone consists of several reactivated foliation-parallel faults containing narrow seams of graphitic clay gouge that are separated by highly cleaved, graphitic wall rock. The mine grid east-dipping P2 fault zone is characterized by reverse offset of the unconformity surface. It varies from a single discrete fault to splay offsets consisting of two to three individual splays. The combined vertical offset along the P2 fault zone is a maximum of about 80 m. The fault has emplaced a wedge-shaped sequence of Wollaston Group metasedimentary rocks into the Athabasca Group. Foliation-oblique faults occur throughout the McArthur deposit trend. Steep east-northeast trending faults generally exhibit apparent oblique dextral sense of shear. Less common, and possibly conjugate, are steep faults trending east-southeast with an apparent sinistral sense of shear. Offsets are generally less than 10 m on these structures. South-trending and shallow west-dipping brittle faults with offsets less than 1 m are also observed while rare steep, north-trending faults are also noted locally and played a critical role in development of the Zone 2 basement-hosted mineralization.

This paper explores the connection between the stresses observed and the failure mechanisms present in the modelled cemented paste backfill. In order to look at this connection, the authors have used a previously developed model to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the model?s strength and permeability input parameters. The results from the sensitivity analysis were then compared to determine what causes modelled stresses and failure mechanisms to vary. Increased insight into the behaviour of the modelled paste will help clarify how paste behaves in the field.

"The molybdenite property of Brynnor Mines Limited, Boss Mountain Division (wholly-owned subsidiary of Noranda Mines Limited), is situated approximately 360 miles northeast of Vancouver on the east slope of Takom-kane mountain in British Columbia's Cariboo District. Orebodies at the deposit fall into two categories; quartz breccia, and veins and stringers. The development of the breccia ore zone was started in June, 1964. The bulk of the ore is being mined from the stringer ore zone. The ore-body has been divided into 100-foot stopes and pillars. A sub-level blasthole method is used and the broken ore is handled in drawpoints and scram drifts. The development, drilling, blasting and handling of the ore are reviewed. The future pillar recovery operation is also analysed. The paper is also concerned with a scheduled shaft sinking program."

The lower Middle Devonian Sylvania Sandstone occurs in the sub-surface in the western part of Mal-den township, Essex county, Ontario. The formation is composed of well rounded, frosted quartz grains with a silica content varying from 42 to 93 per cent and the grains are cemented by carbonate, constituting up to 57 per cent of the rock. This sand-stone is not a homogeneous bed but is divided by strata rich in carbon-ate cement. The thickness of the Sylvania in Malden township varies up to a known maximum thickness of 88 feet. The lower contact with the chert-bearing Bois Blanc formation is sharp but the upper contact with the Amherstburg formation (Detroit River group) exists as a transition by a gradual downward increase in quartz grains. The Sylvania would seem to outcrop in the lake bottom near the mouth of the Detroit River dipping to the north along a broad anticline the axis of which follows the Detroit River. Introduction The study of the ore deposits of British Columbia is one of fascinating interest not only from a scientific but also from a commercial standpoint and certain wide problems in connection therewith have interested me for some years. Several of these problems have been set forth in papers presented before this Institute on previous occasions. In 1918 it was pointed out that the commercial ore deposits of British Columbia, with one exception, were associated with the granodiorite batholiths of upper Jurassic age. This was followed, in 1922, by a discussion of the ore deposits of British Columbia in which the mineral belts of the province were defined and named, showing a zonal arrangement of ores in which the Pacific coast deposits are characterized by the presence of copper, while the interior belt is marked by the presence of silver, lead, and gold. Methods Of Investigation In reading various reports on the economic geology of British Columbia one is struck with the fact that the mineral veins may be arranged as a system and further examination will show that such a system follows two main directions, one northeasterly and the other northwesterly, both related in origin to the same force.

Successful application of steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) on the recovery of land facies ultra-heavy oil in Xinjiang oilfield depends largely on shortening the preheating period with the aid of the micro-fracturing technology, which is conducted through controlled water injection to a pair of horizontal wells to create homogenously distributed microcracks in the zone between the two wells. The numerical simulation of this mechanical process is yet to be investigated. Up to date, there has been research work on rock mechanics during the SAGD production period of marine deposited ultra-heavy oilsands, but the counterpart research on land facies ultra-heavy oilsands of Xinjiang oilfield is left undone. In this regard, this study is attempted to perform numerical simulation of the fracturing process on land facies unconsolidated oilsands. With this objective, the study first investigates geological and physical identification of the field collected cores, then carries out mechanical analysis on laboratory triaixal test results, based on which numerical simulation of the fractured zone is performed. The simulation is applied through a finite element platform adopting extended Drucker-Prager constitutive model, with the parameters determined by experimental work. It is verified that hydraulic fracturing of unconsolidated oilsands generates a microcrack feature in terms of a dilative zone instead of linear apertures. The extent to which the fractured zone propagates is visually demonstrated based on the magnitude distribution of equivalent plastic strain or volumetric dilation. Evaluation of the connection of injection and production wells can possibly be determined by the expansion of the saturated region around each well. Finally, the implications on the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing in stimulation of the pay zone are investigated.

Multivariate statistical techniques, such as principal components analysis (PCA) and projection to latent structures (PLS), are well suited to analyze these large sets of noisy and ill-conditioned data. The power of PCA and PLS is illustrated on historical data from a grinding and flotation plant. Three hundred and fifty observations of forty-four process variables are used to show the capacity of these techniques for preliminary data analysis, classification of operating regimes, process monitoring, and process empirical modelling."

Introduction The geology of the Sudbury nickel field has been studied extensively, but there are few reports dealing with the structure of the interior of the basin. It was not until the Treadwell-Yukon zinc-lead deposits were discovered that attention was strongly directed toward the large-scale faulting that has split the basin parallel to its long axis. This faulting has been responsible for the , ore deposits in the basin and it may be regarded in many ways as the most important geological event, next to the intrusion and differentiation of the nickel eruptive sheet, that has occurred in the Sudbury region. The early reports on the nickel region by Bell, and Barlow, were chiefly concerned with the nickel-copper ores and with the formations of the region. Coleman was the first geologist to map the nickel eruptive as a continuous sheet around the belt and to emphasize its basin character. On the map accompanying his later report, he shows an important offset in the nickel eruptive at its southwest end, where the large fault cuts this portion of the basin, but the fault was not traced into its interior, as little detailed work was clone in the basin at that time. No ore-bodies had been developed outside of the nickel-copper deposits associated with the norite when the map was prepared, and attention was mostly concentrated on the nickel eruptive. Coleman did, however, map and name the various formations found within the basin and, in general, his delineation of these has remained the standard for prospectors and other workers in the field until the present day.

Knowledge of radon emanation rates from uranium-bearing rocks is essential to the design of mine ventilation systems for uranium mines. Measurements of equilibrium ratio between radon and its daughters in mine air are important for a better control of mine radiation conditions. The concentrations of radon and daughters were monitored at cut-and-fill stopes in the Beaverlodge Mine of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. during all phases of the mining cycle. The radon emanation rates of ore and rock samples were measured at the laboratory and the results were compared with in-situ emanation tests in an isolated ore drift. Samples of backfill solution, backfill drainage and ground seepage water were measured [or radon and analyzed for radium and uranium. The results showed that discharges of backfill solution and daily shift-end blasts were the two major sources for a rapid release of radon gas in the ventilation air. Other mining operations, such as drilling, mucking, etc., contributed little effect on radon release to the mining environment. Radon emanation rates of the Beaverlodge are samples ranged from 13 x 10-18 to 600 X 10-18 Ci/cm2/ sec and that of waste rock samples from 0.54 x 10-18 to 13.4 X 10-18 Ci/cm2/sec. The in-situ emanation rate of mine walls with ore-to-rock ratios of 1 to 7 was 60 x 10-18 Ci/cm2/sec. The average equilibrium ratio of radon and its daughters in stapes was 32.6%. Under a normal ventilation condition, the average background levels of radon concentration in cut-and-fill stopes ranged from 13 to 80 pCi/L. The discharges of backfill solution during backfill operations at 100 tons solids per hour released approximately 1.8 x 106 pCi/min of radon and elevated radon concentration in stapes 2 to 5 times above the background levels.
