Bismuth is a notorious contaminant in the electrolytic refining of Cu that can cause cathodes to fail to meet ASTM International standards and not be suitable for use in Cu rod and other downstream products. Bismuth can significantly decrease electrical conductivity, decrease the mechanical strength of the annealed wire, retard recrystallization, and sometimes induce hot shortness during the hot rolling process in the production of rod. As a result, the control of Bi in the refinery tankhouse must be carefully managed. This paper describes how SuperLig® Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) is being used for Bi removal at the Birla Copper Dahej Copper refinery. The operation of the SuperLig® MRT Bi removal plant is described and data on Bi removal efficiency are presented. INTRODUCTION Hindalco’s Cu division, Birla Copper, operates one of the largest Cu refineries in the world at Dahej, Gujarat; India. The main feed for this refinery is produced at the company’s smelter. Due to its massive production capacity, this operation mainly relies on imported Cu concentrates resulting in a variety of metals being carried out as impurities in the Cu anodes because pyrometallurgical technologies alone are not enough to remove them to the extent required. Metal impurities found in Cu ores include Fe, Zn, As, Pb, Bi, and Sb. During electrorefining, less noble metals dissolve in the electrolyte gradually increasing their concentrations creating the need for electrolyte control mechanisms that remove these impurities with varying degrees of success (Wang, 2004; Navarro et al., 2013.) Bismuth is one of the most significant impurities in a Cu refinery because it has the lowest ASTM product specification. This situation is critical because the Bi potential is very close to that of Cu making it possible to plate in the Cu cathode directly. Also, Bi can precipitate at high concentrations causing floating slimes and reduction of current efficiency (Ballinas, San Miguel, Munoz, & Gyves, 2003). Production of high purity cathodes from feed stock containing a diverse range of metal impurities becomes a major challenge in the refining of Cu (Izatt et al., 2015). In this work, the purification strategy followed by Birla Copper for the removal of Bi using a separation process based on MRT is presented, outlining the loading and stripping performance of SuperLig®83 and the benefits of using MRT over other lower selectivity methods where hazardous materials are produced instead of high purity products.

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

The dramatic fluctuation in metal and energy prices in the last few years is causing mining companies to consider alternative analytical methods for mine design and valuation. The goal is to improve insight into unforeseen changes in the economic and project environment and to design projects that take advantage of management's ability to respond to these changes. Such flexibly managed projects will contain value that cannot be measured using traditional engineering economic approaches, further motivating the used of alternative, modern valuation methods. This paper considers the valuation of an uneconomic low-grade resource at an open pit gold mine using two of the most popular modern valuation methods, Dynamic Discounted Cash Flow and Real Options. Our analysis demonstrates that the conventional valuation method may incorrectly represent the value and risk attached to mining this type of resource because it is unable to recognize management's ability to respond to future events in a manner that minimizes losses and exploits advantageous business conditions. The results of this paper highlight the importance of recognizing flexibility and business uncertainty in both mine design and valuation.

FOR THE PAST seven years Mr. W. Simpson, Chief Mechanical Inspector for the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, has carried out exhaustive field trials of non-destructive inspection equipment in the coal mines of that Province. This work has demonstrated the usefulness of a number of types of non-destructive inspection when used for periodic inspection of hoisting and haulage equipment in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. As a result, the Dominion Coal Company has instituted a programme of regular preventive maintenance inspection ?by a special staff of qualified and trained men. The purpose of this present paper is to describe how non-destructive testing techniques are used on ropes, axles, couplings, and other hoisting and haulage equipment, how these methods are being used in other industries, and the expected benefits from intelligent and properly organized use of these techniques in the coal mining industry.

Methods have been developed for processing and analyzing reflected solar radiation data obtained by Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner. Spatial resolution for the Landsat series satellites is 30 meters per side per pixel. Materials on the Earth?s surface absorb or reflect different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum depending on their physical and chemical properties and, therefore, typically have characteristic spectral ?signatures?. Using these signatures, environmental parameters such as surface water and vegetation may be identified and analyzed. Principal advantages of the satellite image method for environmental monitoring include: a relatively long historic period beginning in 1985 for which information is available, the reliable numerical basis for the results, and the ability to assemble a historic environmental baseline and provide on-going monitoring for large or remote areas where standard monitoring methods may not be practical. However, because the long-term continued operation of Landsat 5 is problematic due to the age of the equipment, QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images were processed to determine if the two systems are sufficiently similar in their results to allow continuing monitoring using QuickBird data. The QuickBird satellite was launched in 2001 and collects the same visible and near infrared spectral bandwidths as Landsat 5, allowing for equivalent process algorithms for QuickBird, IKONOS, and Landsat 5 data. Spatial resolution for the QuickBird images is 2.4 meter per side, allowing for more detailed characterization of the land surface; spatial resolution for the IKONOS images is 4 meter per side. Because of several differences between the satellite systems, including degradation of the Landsat 5 sensor, it is necessary to calibrate QuickBird and IKONOS results to the Landsat results to verify similarity. Recent images from the satellite systems have been processed and results have been compared to determine the validity of comparing Landsat 5 and QuickBird/IKONOS images so that these newer data can be used reliably in the future instead of Landsat 5 data. Results from this comparison are presented in this paper and suggest that analyses for vegetation using the two satellite systems are comparable, and that little calibration is required. Results from comparison of surface water results from the two systems are less comparable and is currently being investigated by the authors.

"IntroductionTHE ORE PILLARS in the lower ""A"" ore body of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, can be divided into two groups, those mined in the open by sub-level blast-hole methods, and those to be mined .against coarse rock fill. Of the three pillars in the last group one has been mined and is dealt with in this paper. The method of mining pillars against coarse rock fill was suggested by the late Dr. Oliver Hall, who was Consulting Engineer for the Company when recovery of No. 2 East pillar was being planned.HistoryThe Waite Amulet mine is in northwestern Quebec, nine miles north of the town of Noranda. The property is approximately three miles long by one mile wide. The present Company, which was formed by the amalgamation of Amulet Mines, Limited, and Waite Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, commenced operations in the summer of 1937. In the fall of 1939 a new .flotation mill was erected with a capacity of 1,200 tons per day, which was increased to 1,800 tons per day in 1943. The mill is presently operated at 1,400 tons per day.To date, seven orebodies have been found, the major ones being Lower A, East Waite, and Waite. Three separate concentrates are produced, copper, zinc, and pyrite. Total tonnage mined to the end of 1954 from all orebodies has been 7,340,000 tons, which averaged 4.6 per cent copper, 5.3 per cent zinc, and 0.037 oz. gold and 1.27 oz. silver per ton."

"The anisotropy of rock is of great importance to the rock engineering. To investigate the anisotropic character of slate, the rock samples of slate under different confining pressures and bedding plane angles was conducted on the MTS. The results indicated that the relationship between bedding plane angle and elasticity modulus, friction angle, cohesion and strength was shown as U pattern. The minimum value of them is located from 30°to 45°.In addition, the elasticity modulus and Poisson's ratio increase with the increasing confining pressure. The slate behaves brittle failure both in the uniaxial and triaxial compression. The failure pattern of uniaxial compression is generally tension failure, and triaxial test usually shows shear failure. The failure angle decrease with the increasing of confining pressure.INTRODUCTIONThe anisotropy of rock is that loading in different orientations the rock has different mechanical properties. The anisotropic property of rock is always an important problem in rock engineering (Hoek E. & Brown E. T., 1980). J. C. Jaeger (1960) first presented that transverse strength criterion for sliding fracture on joint surface. Later he revised rock parameters to anisotropy empirically for isotropic Mohr- Coulomb criterion. His main idea is revising cohesion according to loading direction (J. C. Jaeger, 1971). Then, many scholars study a lot on transverse strength criterion. E. Z. Lajtai (1969) considered the influence of connecting rate in all directions in joint groups for shear strength in intact rock; R. Mclamore and K. E. Gray (1967) referenced the theory of J. C. Jaeger. They not only revised cohesion also revised friction coefficient. Y. M. Tien (2000, 2001) made further study on the influence of connecting rate in joint group to transverse strength. R. Nova (1980) studied on the variation of strength when rock specimens in triaxial pressure and complex stress paths. O. Cazacu(1998) put forwards a new anisotropic strength criterion for analyzing rock strength. S. Pietruszczak(2000) introduced fabric tensor for characterizing inner seismic structure and he built an anisotropic strength criterion containing the invariants of stress tensor and seismic fabric tensor."

The effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties and weldability of wrought gamma prime strengthened nickel- base superalloys is well known. An understanding of the basic guidelines concerning alloying additions has led to the invention and development of HAYNES® 282® alloy for applications in aircraft and land base gas turbines and other high-performance high-temperature environments. The alloy combines exceptional high temperature properties with good weldability and fabricability. At high temperatures (~ 900 °C), the alloy is stronger in creep strength than Waspaloy alloy (UNS N07001) and it approaches the creep strength of R-41 alloy (UNS N07041). Because the alloy has better thermal stability, fabricability, and weldability than Waspaloy and R-41 alloys, it is currently being considered as a candidate universal consumable for welding/ repair welding of gamma prime strengthened nickel based superalloys and it is also being considered as a suitable replacement for applications where R- 41, Waspaloy, and 263 (UNS N07263) alloys are currently being used. The alloy was designed to have improved resistance to strain age cracking, a problem common to gamma prime strengthened nickel based superalloys. In this paper, we present (1) results from hot ductility testing of annealed and annealed/aged material; (2) results from Time Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXRD) studies during a welding thermal cycle of annealed and annealed/aged material, and (3) gas metal arc (GMA) and gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding of annealed and annealed/aged material.

Based upon research findings from several countries, the combination of microwave and mechanical means to break hard rock holds promise for the future. To achieve this goal, it is essential to understand the laws governing strength reduction of hard rock, such as granite, induced by microwave irradiation. Two aspects to consider are: 1) laws associated with the tensile strength of hard rock after microwave irradiation and 2) the sensitivity of different types of rock strengths to microwave energy. In this study, granite with a range of tensile strengths was exposed to microwaves for various time periods to compare the response of rocks with different strength values exposed to the same microwave irradiation. In addition, a method based on hotspots is presented to explain the mechanism by which granite strength is reduced by microwave irradiation. Granite extracted from Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi Province, China is used in the research. ?50 × 50 mm cylindrical granite specimens were exposed to microwaves at a specific power level. The strength values of the heated granite specimens were compared with those of unheated specimens. Through the comparison and analyses, relationships were determined between 1) reduction in granite strength and microwave irradiation time period, and 2) granite strength and sensitivity to a given energy of microwave irradiation. Finally, a mechanism to explain the experimental results is proposed. Research findings will aid in the design of a microwave + machine rock-breaking system for use in rock breakage in underground mines at depth and for future mine applications on earth and other planets. In addition, the experimental approach could be used to test other rock types to further our understanding of rock damage induced by microwave irradiation.

"New generation of Al-Mg-Si alloys with thermally stable dispersoids that prevent recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation are currently used in automotive components requiring good formability. Alloy chemistry controls the phase formation especially age-hardening precipitates, dispersoids, and primary intermetallic which have pronounced effect on grain structure, strength and formability. In this work, thermodynamic calculations have been used to predict the effects of varying levels of Si (0.5-1.5wt%), Mg (0.5-1.5wt%) and Mn (0.1-2.5wt%) on phase selection. Thermodynamic calculations have been performed in equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions via the FactSage™ software using the FTlite database. Selected compositions have been cast, heat treated, extruded and characterized through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron channeling contrast imaging techniques. The calculations showed that at the hot deformation temperature of ~540 oC, exceeding certain Mg and Si levels would lead to retained *-Mg2Si intermetallics and Si particles at the grain boundaries in addition to a-Al-(Mn,Fe)-Si. It was found that retained *-Mg2Si phase which adversely affects formability can be avoided for Si+2Mg levels lower than 2.3wt%. FactSage calculations also showed that increasing Mn from 0.5wt% to 1wt% leads to an increase in the amount of dispersoids (from 1wt% to 2wt%) that can potentially slow down recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation and improve formability. Calculations at room temperature also show that for an alloy with 0.7wt% Mg, excess Si beyond 0.7 wt% promotes the precipitation of Si clusters in the Al matrix that accelerate natural age-hardening. Results were confirmed by experimental investigation.INTRODUCTIONAluminum alloy 6082 (Al-Mg-Si) is used in the automotive industry because of its high strength, and good weldability (I. J. Polmear, 2006). The alloy is age-hardenable through the precipitation of ß-Mg2Si and its precursors, and the recrystallization is usually inhibited by Mn- and Cr-containing dispersoids formed through high temperature heat treatments (I. Polmear & Couper, 1988). However, it is known that minor changes in alloy chemistry (Mg/Si ratio) can have significant influences on the ductility and formability of these alloys by altering phase selection and the resultant microstructure (Gupta, Lloyd, & Court, 2001; McQueen & Celliers, 1997; Zajac, Hutchinson, Johansson, & Gullman, 1994). For automotive applications where wrought alloys (usually extrusions) are cold-formed to produce suspension components, the chemistry of the alloys and the extruded structure are of crucial importance as they determine the formability at room temperature (Asensio-Lozano, Suárez-Peña, & Vander Voort, 2014). In this study, thermodynamic calculations along with experimental investigations were carried out on the Al-Mg-Si system to understand their phase formation and precipitation hardening as a function of alloy composition."

"Layered aluminum structures assembled with rivets are often found in aircraft fuselage. These structures are exposed to various mechanical loads and a range of environmental conditions that contribute to their ""aging"". The rivet holes are the source of stress concentrations and the location of crack nucleation and growth. Detection and sizing of second and third layer cracks under fasteners represent a major challenge for non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technicians. Electromagnetic methods are currently the most feasible NDE techniques that are capable of successfully inspecting such structures. However, different probe lift-offs, due to protruding rivets and paint coatings, or interlayer separations, due to sealant or air gaps, pose difficulties in detecting and sizing cracks. In addition, the use of conventional eddy current technique is limited due to the inverse relationship between the probe spatial resolution and its field penetrability. In this paper, we present an alternative approach that overcomes the previously mentioned shortcomings by using pulsed eddy current excitation and magnetoresistive sensor pick-up. Various signal manipulations are employed for defect detection and quantification."

"The property of Matachewan Consolidated Mines is in the Matachewan area on the west side of Montreal river. It lies in the western extension of the Kirkland Lake sedimentary belt. The first discovery of gold on the property was made by S. Otisse, in 1916. The property was taken over by Ventures, Limited, in 1933 and production commenced in late 1934. To date (December 31st, 1947) it has amounted to 2,308,800 tons, from which gold and silver to the value of $9,567,600 has been recovered. The mill is currently treating 650 tons of ore a day.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe deposits lie close to the south contact of a belt of sediments striking in a general east-west direction. The sediments, presumed to be of Timiskaming age, consist of light buff arkose and greywacke, containing small pebbles. The Keewatin volcanic rocks to the south are andesites or basalts with cuff and agglomerate bands developed especially near the contact with the sediments. The lavas and sediments are overlain by relatively flat-lying sediments of the Cobalt series to the south and west of the mine, but these later sediments are not involved in the mineralization under discussion. The Keewatin lavas and Timiskaming sediments are intruded by dykes and lenses of red syenite porphyry that have approximately the same strike and dip as the invaded rocks. Later diabase dykes, apparently post-ore, run in a north-south direction and cut all rocks except the Cobalt series.OREBODIESThe gold-bearing mineralization forms bodies of two different types: (1) Within the volcanic rocks irregular orebodies with limited vertical extent. These consist of a series of flat-dipping quartz stringers and adjacent lavas and /or cuffs fractured, bleached, and mineralized with pyrite and gold. They are higher grade than the second type (average about 0.16 oz. gold a ton) and formed the main source of ore for the first 5 years of production. They are described in more detail than can be given here in an article by C. H. Hopper (4). More recent work on deeper levels has failed so far to find orebodies of comparable grade, though low-grade mineralization of a similar type does occur on the projected rake of the main group of the 'basalt type' of orebodies."

The production process of a coal mine can often be interrupted by all kinds of events scheduled or unscheduled and thus often needs gas drainage for a temporary or long-term sealed area. Gas drainage has a relatively high risk, therefore attention must be paid to its design to keep the process safe. Based on the conservation laws of mass and constituents, and under the conditions of the allowable gas concentration limit in the return air route, the relationship between gas concentration and gas drainage flow rate as a function of time during the drainage process is discussed in detail to build a mathematical model of gas drainage from a sealed area. With respect to the gas drainage process, two different conditions need to be considered: one with a methane free fresh air supply, the other with a low gas concentration. This paper presents the derived mathematical models for these situations and then shows that they can be incorporated into one model with some modification. This combined model can be employed to determine the optimum gas drainage flow rate with the shortest drainage time. The application is coded using the C# programming language within the .NET framework. Finally, the application program developed by the author is used to validate the mathematical model through an example of gas drainage with varying rate.

The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren's mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. The gross vehicle weight (GVW) of an ultra-class mining truck comprises the unsuspended weight below the struts plus the suspended empty vehicle weight, plus the payload. Theoretically, one third of the suspended total weight is supported by two front struts and two thirds by two rear struts. However, since the payload position is not fixed when placed in the truck body and varies from load to load, compounded by uneven haul road profiles, the truck structure experiences higher than normal stresses, which manifest in the reduction of the life of the truck via structural fatigue. The downstream effects are a decrease in production and increase in operational and maintenance costs. In order to control the dynamic forces causing the high stresses on the truck structure, both the haul road conditions and the load distribution in the truck body need to be investigated. The latter aspect is the prime focus of this paper. A field test has been conducted in an oil sands mine where the Caterpillar 797B trucks are loaded by a Bucyrus 495 shovel. The strut pressure readings are collected using the data-loggers on the trucks as well as the truck velocity associated with each reading. Rack, roll and pitch are the main key performance indicators (KPIs) that are calculated to study the adverse effect of an unbalanced payload and consequently the truck structure. Finally, the shovel bucket load passes within the truck body are simulated and a new method is suggested to improve the truck payload balance.

Strategically located within the Uravan Mineral Belt District of western Colorado, the Piñon Ridge Project is the first new uranium mill being proposed for construction in the United States in over 25 years. In 1992, dramatic changes to the US regulatory environment for uranium ore processing occurred making regulatory compliance an increased challenge for a new facility. Proposed as a 6.3 million tonne uranium milling operation, the mill will receive ore from a number of mines in the region. The project includes design and permitting of a uranium/vanadium processing facility, tailings cells, evaporation ponds, and ore stockpile pads. The focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the US regulations and how these regulations were applied to design of the mill facilities, as well as provide a status update on the project as the mill license application was submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in November 2009.

This type of microscopic investigation, although still in its infancy, has already found practical applications in several different phases of mining activity. The study of the transparent minerals in rocks, by means of the ordinary petrographic microscope, has for long been a very useful supplement to observations in the field, but the opaque minerals, until recently, have had to rest content with a more or less superficial determination with the hand-lens or the blow-pipe. In a great many cases, particularly where the association of metallics has been somewhat complex, this has been entirely inadequate, and the determination of these opaque minerals under the micro- scope, has opened up a new field of scientific investigation that bids fair to surpass, in practical value at least, the micro-scopic determination of the rock-forming minerals. As the details of this kind of microscopy are possibly not entirely familiar to all mining men, it might be well to outline them very briefly before dealing with the practical directions in which this method may be applied. The ordinary petro-graphic microscope, with but one extra attachment, will serve for this work. A small reflecting device, called a vertical illuminator, is inserted immediately above the objective lens. This reflects the light down to the surface of the specimen and from here the light is directed up the middle of the microscope tube to the eye. As it is desirable that the maximum amount of reflection should be secured from the surface of the section, it is first polished and set in a position perpendicular to the vertical axis of the microscope.

"Rare Earths have become critical for our energy and materials driven society. While primary production must ramp up to fill growing demands, the recycle of these strategic elements must also be initiated. This paper will outline the potentials of and metallurgical technologies employed for Rare Earths recycle from various secondary sources.INTRODUCTIONWhen investigating the recovery of rare earths from secondary sources it is necessary to understand the nature of the sources to be processed. As of 2009, the USGS reports the distribution of rare earths by end use, in decreasing order, was: chemical catalysts 22%, metallurgical applications and alloys 21%, petroleum refining catalysts 14%, automotive catalytic converters 13%, glass polishing and ceramics 9%, rare earth phosphors for computer monitors, lighting, televisions 8%, permanent magnets 7%, electronics 3%, and others 3% (USGS, 2011). Additionally, it is reported that the amount of recycling was quite small and consisted primarily of rare earth magnet scrap, although with the sharp increase in the price of rare earths, and the potential shortage in supply, focus in this area is continually growing. Thus, the opportunities, whether realistic or not, are extremely vast in the recycling of rare earth containing materials. The following subsections will present methods proposed for the recycling of rare earths based on the feed material type.RECYCLING OF RARE EARTH MAGNETSCurrently, investigations are ongoing in the area of recycling production scrap and end-of-life materials in the rare earth magnet industry. "Abstract -Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized . These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. ln this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dis­ solving huge cavities in the evaporites . The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds . ln at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation .Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in Insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore zone, and drops in topography >10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies.Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

"IntroductionThe introduction to this section on gravity concentration indicated the wide range of equipment types that exist for the concentration of minerals, in what is the broadest size range of any concentration process.The equipment described in this chapter includes jigs, tables and sHme plant equipment. In contrast to the equipment described in the two succeeding chapters, this range of equipment, in nearly every instance, superimposes a mechanical movement on the fluid motion to effect separation of the valuable mineral from the waste mineral. The motion may be vertical Gigs), reversing (tables), or rotary (slime plants): however, in common they ""dilate"" the bed of particles to allow preferential settlement of the heavier particles.Description of Process UnitsJiggingJigging is the sorting of different minerals by stratification, based on the movement of a bed of particles relative to a fluid in a vertical plane.The basic construction of a jig is shown in Figure 1. Essentially it consists of an open tank filled with a fluid, normally water, with a horizontal jig screen at the top and with a spigot in the ""hutch"", or bottom compartment, for removal of heavies. The jig beri consists of a layer of coarse heavy particles (ragging) on the jig screen. This ragging is of a specific gravity between that of the minerals it is intended to separate.In operation the bed is made fluid by a pulsating current of fluid to provide stratification. On the upward or pulsion stroke the bed of ragging and slurry is normally Hfted as a mass, then as velocity of the upcurrent decreases it dilates, loosening the whole mass. On the downward or suction stroke it closes slowly again. The ideal is to control this dilation of the bed of material so that the heavier and smaller particles penetrate the interstices of the bed, while the larger heavies fall under a condition akin to ""hindered"" settling."
