ONE of the problems encountered in any mine is the effect of increasing pressure manifested by increasing depth. Although the depth at which excessive pressure assumes serious proportion, and the manner in which it appears in underground workings, are influenced by a variety of factors, nevertheless the difficulty is present in all mines and its gravity increases with increasing depth. In the Kirkland Lake camp, as far back as seven years ago, mining had proceeded to depths sufficient to result in the formation of pressure great enough to cause violent disruption of masses of rock. It is proposed in this paper to deal with the effect of pressure caused by mining as observed at Lake Shore Mines, and to describe some of the methods which have been adopted to counteract it. There are many contributing factors in a study of the problem, and results vary widely in individual mines and in different localities. One feature common to all, however, is that there is ground subsidence, evidenced either by a gradual settling accompanied by crushing and shearing of the ore and wall-rocks, or the disruption of the ground surrounding the periphery of an excavation may take place suddenly, attended by more or less violent shattering of the rocks. Such violent failure of a mass of rock has been designated by the term rock-burst. The history of rock-bursts extends over a great number of years. They have occurred in some form or other in practically ali places where mining operations, at all but very shallow depths, have been carried out. Since the theoretical aspects of the subject have been dealt 'with at great length by capable and experienced writers (1), the present paper will give only a brief résumé of the theories propounded by those engaged in deep mining operations in various parts of the world.

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

"CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal-oil-mixture (COM) business for over five years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August 1979. For over two years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large-scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit.CoaLiquid has conducted commercial-scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.IntroductionCoaLiquid, Inc. officially dedicated its plant on August 31, 1979, at a ceremony presided over by the then Governor of Kentucky, The Honorable Julian Carroll. The dedication marked the culmination of over three years of research and development work and marked the beginning of a new era of coal-oil-mixtures as a commercial commodity in the marketplace. As the first such plant in the United States, it set the tone for construction to follow.CLI was originally owned and managed by a group of entrepreneurs from Kentucky who had developed the process and constructed the plant on purely private investment and conventional financing. Beginning in late 1976, with a pilot-scale operation, also located in Shelbyville, Kentucky (near Louisville), CLI began producing a stable mixture of 50070 coal, 30% to 40% oil and 10% to 20% water by weight. The technology employed was developed by Eric C. Cottell of Long Island, New York and is covered by U.S. Letters Patent No. 3,941,552. Since the pilot plant operation, CoaLiquid has made many refinements to its process and in fact has added new technology to its portfolio of patents and patents pending. Further refinements to the product now produce a stable mixture of 50% coal, 40% No.6 fuel oil and 10% water by weight."

In this paper, the author offers a personal view of what the next 30 years holds for mineral processing. Restating that mineral processing will remain a vibrant industry in raw material production, growth opportunities in waste management are identified. The processing sequence familiar now (mining ?mineral processing ?extraction) will become more interwoven. In situ processing (i.e., milling underground) will evolve from concept to demonstration. Opportunities to exploit physical properties altered in chemical (pyro- and hydro-) processing will present themselves. In primary grinding, the path to AG/SAG milling will progress with little deviation but opportunities in regrinding are wide open. Flotation will see the trend to designing bubble/particle reactors accelerate simultaneously with a vigorous response from mechanical cell suppliers. Gravity separation remains a bastion of the lone inventor but this author anticipates that the new lines will come from the waste management business. Several reviews of mineral project performance in the past 35 years indicate a pattern of occasional, but recurrent, mining project failures due to shortcomings in geological information and estimation, mineral processing and metallurgical testing, feasibility study objectives and requirements, and project start-up methods. A commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement methods and to obtaining “ENOUGH DATA, OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY” is essential. Recent international and Canadian proposals for mineral resource and ore reserve definitions have taken a nonprescriptive stance that will undermine the formulation of requirements, guidelines and industry standards for efficient deposit delineation and estimation, and for the determination of project feasibility. To help reduce problems, every feasibility study supporting a mine development and production decision should be based on objectives and methods adequate to reach completion targets similar to the bankers’, as a good business target for a profitable project. In a resource/reserve system, the use of reserve should be restricted to a project that meets required technical, economic and legal feasibility requirements for successful project implementation, and the definitions of these categories should provide explicit limits. Current shortcomings will limit the ability of the Qualified Person to provide “adequate professional practice,” fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to his employer or client and provide adequate information to the investing public. We must take advantage of present opportunities for Setting New Standards for the new Millennium.

"The commercial potential of a silica-kaolin deposit that occurs on the banks of and close to the Missinaibi River in the District of Cochrane, Ontario, is under evaluation by Algocen Mines Limited. The geological features of the deposit, as well as its probable origin, are described. Mineralogical analysis of the deposit samples indicates that the principal minerals are quartz and kaolinite clay; it is estimated that about 20 per cent of the deposit is kaolin clay. The impurity minerals present are: a slightly magnetic Fe-Ti oxide mineral, goethite, muscovite mica, tour-maline, staurolite, anatase and zircon. Laboratory research studies are in progress to develop and evaluate suit-able methods for the separation of silica sand from kaolin. Results to date indicate that good-quality silica sand with an Fe,03 content in the range of 0.012 to 0.025 per cent can be produced. It appears that the clay portion can also be beneficiated to yield products meeting commercial requirements. It has been possible to beneficiate a portion of theetlay to obtain the particle size distribution now specified by industry. However, research is continuing to develop suitable separation and beneficiation methods which can produce kaolin clay meeting all the commercial requirements."

"As rock engineering moves from continuum to more discontinuum approaches for modeling, the engineer must make decisions regarding the degree of complexity to simulate for a given application, balancing the level of structural detail within the rockmass model with computational cost and result accuracy. It is important to consider that model does not need to include all the existent fractures and that representative geometrical properties for a given rock mass volume can be defined including only major structural entities.Within this paper, the scale-dependency associated with the geometrical properties of fractured rock is investigated utilizing a Synthetic Rockmass (SRM) approach with a view to characterize such ground to aid in the design of geotechnical works. In terms of process, the concept of the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) is used to determine the equivalent structural properties of the rockmass in order to justify the applicability of far-field behaviour of such ground. A large size Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) measuring 60m x 60m x 60m has been generated using the structural data obtained from LiDAR scanning of the Brockville Tunnel, Ontario, Canada. A number of DFN samples of varying sizes are extracted from the master network, generated using MoFrac, in order to be used as a the basis of the structural analysis of the rockmass. Volumetric measurements for the density and the intensity of jointing are employed in order to approximate the geometrical REV for the networks.In this paper a complete methodology of how to generate a DFN from LiDAR data and its analysis in order to determine the size of a geometrical REV is demonstrated. For the specific rockmass found in the area of the Brockville Tunnel, a geometrical REV measuring 3.5m x 3.5m x 7m is established. The results are generally in good agreement with the in-situ observations."

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. Port-able equipment was then acquired and a simple screening plant (Figures 1 and 1a) was at first used. This was later replaced by heavier, more versatile equipment. Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Les mésocosmes des marais artificiels traitant des eaux usées, contenant du chrome hexavalent (Cr(VI)), exposés à des champs magnétiques de faible intensité (60 Hz, 56,5 × 10-6 Tesla) ont produit 100 % plus de biomasse que le contrôle non exposé. In the transformation of carbonaceous materials, such as peat, to coals of various grades, the changes are known to be both physical and chemical and the grade of coal finally produced depends on the stage to which alteration proceeded. Those changes, which are frequently spoken of as the results of metamorphism, are due to pressure with accompanying heat and, according to the amount of metamorphism to which the sediments with the included carbonaceous beds have been subjected, there is a gradation from peat to anthracite coal, and even to graphite. The improvement in the quality of the coal as a result of metamorphism is due to an increase of the carbon content of the coal and a corresponding loss of the volatile materials. This rise in the quality of the coal according to the degree of metamorphism is well illustrated by the coals of western Canada. In the Plains area, where the deformation and the attendant metamorphism of the sediments is comparatively small, the coals are lignites, whereas in the mountains, where deformation has been severe, the coals are semi-anthracites. Sub-bituminous and bituminous coals occur in the intervening areas. The same general relationship between the quality of the coal and the degree of metamorphism holds true for the Appalachian basin of the United States, where there is a progressive improvement in the quality of the coals from west to east, that is, from an area of comparatively slight metamorphism to an area of marked deformation in the Appalachian Mountain region. But while it is true that this relationship holds in a general way, it has been found that the improvement in the quality of the coal is not always uniformly progressive, and there may be local variations such that an area containing coal with a carbon content indicating low or medium metamorphism may be surrounded by areas in which the coals are of higher grade. These local variations in many cases can be explained, and they in no way detract from the general rule that, in a region exhibiting a progressive betterment in the quality of the coal from an area of low metamorphism to one of more marked deformation, the quality of the coal, i.e., the amount of fixed carbon in the coal, may be taken as an index of the degree of metamorphism of the coal as well as of the sediments in which it occurs, It has been pointed out (') that certain coals, such as cannels, are unreliable indicators of the varying degree of metamorphism because of the nature of the material from which such coal was derived. Such coals, however, are not known in western Canada and their behaviour need not here be discussed.

The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

Of the f ive Canadian cement producing regions- Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and Pacific-Ontario has the greatest capacity and normally produces the most cement. However, during the last 5 years the greatest activity within the industry in Canada has been in the Prairie and Pacific regions where major capacity increases have taken place. Most Canadian cement companies produce normal Portland, high-earlystrength Portland and sulphate resisting Portland cements. Some companies also manufacture moderate Portland cement, and low-heat-of-hydration Portland cement. Escalating energy costs highlight the need for technology research into more energy-efficient equipment for the energy-intensive cement industry. The industry is well integrated and plants are well situated to support construction in Canada. Expansion into the United States has become common during the past decade.

As of November 2012, the Alberta government listed 53 oil and gas, oil sands, and mining construction projects either proposed or currently under construction. These industrial plant construction projects have an estimated value greater than 105 million dollars. A common construction method employed for industrial plant projects is fast-track construction, which is used to reduce construction time. Contractors begin fast-track construction with highly generic scheduling information. This high level schedule turns into a lower level schedule as more detailed information becomes available. From a contractor?s perspective, a challenge faced using fast-track construction is the visualization of generic and constantly changing project schedules. This paper discusses the use of a Plant Information Modeling (PIM) system, designed to create a 4D animation to visualize project schedules for fast-track industrial plant construction projects. The proposed PIM system creates a modified project schedule by obtaining specific information from a generic construction schedule. Obtaining the information involves grouping schedule activities in accordance with the level of detail in a 3D model, and the level of detail in a project schedule. The modified project schedule is then used in conjunction with a 3D model to simulate the construction sequence in the form of a 4D animation. This allows for 4D visualization of project activities, installation dates, and crane movements. Furthermore, as engineering reaches completion, the PIM system creates a streamlined channel for schedule information updates to be easily uploaded into the model for a more accurate 4D visualization. Through analyzing a nonmodular construction case study, this paper discusses the successes and benefits of the PIM system for 4D visualization, such as increased productivity, shortened construction time, increased constructability, and decreased field costs.

To one with so little experience in matters pertaining to currency, international finance, and foreign trade, this is surely an ambitions venture on my part. However, this is a subject of prime importance to all seriously minded Canadians and, if we are to obtain any clear understanding of the factors involved, we must study the facts and debate such points as may remain at issue. During the last few years, the world' s better known economists have described the gold standard in all its ramifications and in such detail as to leave many of us even more confused than before. If we, then, are to acquire any real conception of its meaning and use, I think we must reduce it to its fundamentals and start from there. To my way of thinking, gold in ? trade and commerce is the symbol of honesty. When you seek to discharge a debt by tendering paper you hand the recipient an I.O.U. which may or may not be good, for the purchase of goods or services to the extent of its face value. When, however, you discharge a debt by the payment of gold, it constitutes a complete and final discharge. There are no reservations - no ifs and ands - and the transaction is definitely closed to the satisfaction of all concerned. Gold, then, is evidence of accumulated and transferable wealth that is immediately acceptable in practically every part of the world. However, there is not nearly enough gold to meet the demands of world trade, and. many years ago this deficiency gave rise to what we now describe as our banking system.

Due to changes in the solid-state conditions of minerals in the rocks surrounding hydrothermal, contact meta-somatic or metamorphosed ore deposits, positive or negative thermoluminescent anomalies may be found in their vicinity. Several types of equipment which can be used for both quantitative and semi-quantitative measurements of the emission are discussed and compared. Methods of selecting, preparing and testing samples to ensure reproducible results are outlined, along with the kind of data which can be obtained from different types of equipment. The normal thermoluminescence of rock-forming min~ erals in the common rock types is noted, and variations in the solid-state conditions in the wall rocks which will cause marked increases or decreases of true thermoluminescence are outlined, as well as the thermolum-nescence-like emissions which are present in the vicinity of ore deposits. As an occupational culture, mining comes with its own set of rules, agendas and values. Yet mines often also operate in the traditional territories of indigenous communities, with whom specific agreements are negotiated that commit to respect culture, economy and environment. Mines in these locations employ extremely diverse workforces whose value systems often come into conflict in on-the-job relationships. Adaptation of individual worker attitudes and industrial operating culture thus both need to occur if there is to be the negotiation of a workable relationship. This paper will discuss ways that NWT diamond mines have adapted to their workforce, to ensure that rights and cultures of their diverse workforce can be respected. Historically, the concept of culture has been dealt with solely through the forum of ?cross-cultural? workshops. Gibson presents a model of a new type of ?cultural-engagement? workshop based on the top ten cross-cultural conflicts that actually arise at a remote mine-site. This model helps managers, team leaders, and workers to tackle in-mine conflicts that arise based on differing value systems of aboriginal and non-aboriginal workers and management. In addition, Gibson suggests that the concept of culture must be more rigorously applied throughout the mine structure and not discussed only in the forum of the cross-cultural workshop.

"The Northeastern part of the Cariboo district lies in the big bend of the Fraser River between Quesnel and McBride. The area shown on Figure 1 extends from just west of Wells to Isaac Lake, about 30 miles across the regional strike of beds.Topographically the area extends from the moderately well dissected Interior Plateau in the west through a transition zone to the fully dissected Cariboo Mountains in the east.The area is an important source of lode and placer gold. The Cariboo Gold Quartz and Island Mountain lode-gold mines have produced more than 32 million dollars in bullion since 1932. Placer-mining has probably produced an equivalent or greater amount, although only 15 million dollars is officially recorded because accurate statistics. were not kept until fourteen years after the origiiaal gold rush of 1860.The regional structure of the Barkerville district was summarized by Lang in the Jubilee Volume (1948, pp. 141-149). Since then a large amount of detailed and areal mapping by the writers has expanded the information available and made necessary a complete revision of the regional geology. Much of the information summarized in this paper, together with a full discussion of the revisions, may be found in British Columbia Department of Mines Bulletins, Nos. 34 and 38, but other information is as yet un-published.Rocks of the Kaza group are exposed in the core of the Lanezi anti-clinorium between Spectacle and Isaac Lakes. The main part of the group is composed of greenish micaceous greywacke and greenish schist with knots of garnet, biotite, or both, and minor amounts of pebble conglomerate. The upper 1,000 feet is composed of white to brown quartzites and brown phyllites. Altogether, about 6,000 feet of the group is exposed. 1t is of latest Precambrian, i. e. Windermere, age."

THIS paper describes the electrical features of the locomotive now (August, 1962) under construction for Craigmont Mines. Intended for non-specialists, it avoids details of design and calculations interesting to electricians only. The paper is divided into three sections. The first deals very briefly with the mine layout and with operating conditions -existing and expected. Reference is made to economic considerations leading to the selection of the type and size of locomotive, as well as to traction diagrams and the calculations. This material is not included in the paper because of its length and because it does not represent anything new. The second section deals with engineering and economic considerations and shows, in some detail, why the A.C. system was chosen. The third section describes the basic components of the locomotive, including the voltage regulator, the rectifiers, the control arrangement and the filter, and deals with considerations affecting the selection of their rating and design. A concluding sub-section describes, very briefly, the track and trolley details and the power distribution switchgear.

"A computational method based on a continuum-mechanical approach to simulate rock cutting is developed and evaluated. The aim is to obtain the local loading acting at the cutting pick during operation. The explicit FEM is chosen to model the pick-rock interaction. The presented method takes advantage of (i) an advanced material model (ii) a robust contact algorithm and (iii) fast calculations due to parallelization. A damage-plasticity law is chosen and modified with user-subroutines. A user integrated element deletion routine evades critical mesh distortions. Infinite elements at the model boundaries avoid unrealistic deformation wave reflection.INTRODUCTIONExcavation in mining and tunneling is a costly and complex process. Special equipment such as the roadheader (Figure 1) is employed to cut the rock in the excavation process but high material strengths limit their usability (Tockner 1999). Nowadays a challenge is to extend their field of application to harder and more abrasive rock materials. The forces on the pick (Figure 2) are of great importance and determine wear and especially the efficiency of the machine. Figure 2 shows the principle of cutting and the predominant forces. The variation of pick geometry, cutting depth or attack angle will result in an alteration of these forces and determine the efficiency of the process (Tockner 1999). The mechanisms of rock cutting follow the principle of indentation (Kou et al. 1999). Directly under the indenter a hydrostatic stress state evolves causing the material to fail only due to crushing and fragmentation mechanisms. In the close surroundings large strains emerge and tensile cracks are formed but in a further distance the material behaves elastically."
