Heap leach processes can encounter diverse flow conditions, such as infiltration into dry ore material, drainage, perched water tables and heterogeneous materials, leading to large variations in permeability and the creation of preferential flow pathways. Climate and meteorological conditions, such as precipitation, evaporation, and temperature, can also have a significant effect on the hydrodynamics of the heap. Nonuniform and adverse flow behavior within the heap contributes to reducing the leaching efficiency of the heap leading to lower metal recoveries. The variability of flow within the heap can result in solute transport problems, which limit the leach reaction kinetics. Therefore, understanding the flow and transport phenomena within the heap is critical in its design and optimization. A comprehensive heap leach model, developed within a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework, employs robust algorithms to solve diverse variably saturated flow conditions. The model allows for a wide array of complex thermo-fluid physics to be represented and captures suites of very complex reactions that are closely coupled with thermal conditions and key microbial populations. Employing a three-dimensional heterogeneous ‘test’ heap, a number of flow conditions are investigated and the sensitivity of metal recovery is discussed.

ALL mineral production? of Can11.da is transported in a mine car at some stage during its extraction. There are as many types and varieties of mine cars as there are of mines. Many of the cars in use were developed in the blacksmith shop. Others were designed by engineers and improved by the mine foremen and the mechanics. Every mine car has the ideas of miner, blacksmith, mechanic, and engineer incorporated in it. Many of these ideas are not generally known. This paper was written to make at least some of this information available to the mining industry. In drawings, tables, and notes, it gives all the important details pertaining to the cars. It .does not recommend any particular type of car for any particular piece of work, nor does it present drawings from which a car can be built. It gives the engineer or master mechanic information on many cars which he can apply to his own particular problems. It is hoped that this information will be of use to mine operators. If a few new ideas are conceived as a result of the paper, the author will feel that the effort of compiling it has been worth while. In order to obtain the data for the preparation of the paper, a questionnaire, copy of which is here reproduced, was sent to all the operating mining companies in Canada. An accompanying letter briefly explained the purpose of the paper and asked for co-operation in furnishing as complete information as possible.

The Dragon Lake Zone (uranium prospect) comprises a N160º trending vein that is approximately 110 m long, up to 5 m wide and from 1 to 40 m high. The zone is mostly within altered sandstone of the Fair Point Formation, the basal unit of the Paleoproterozoic Athabasca Group, but it also extends downward (up to 3.5 m) into basement rocks that occupy the northerly trending Maybelle River Shear Zone (MRSZ). This subvertical shear zone separates graphitic paragneiss and weakly deformed granitoid rocks to the east from non-graphitic paragneiss and foliated granitoid rocks to the west. The Dragon Lake Zone cuts across both the MRSZ and N060º-N070º-trending cross-faults that offset the shear zone but not the mineralized vein, which contains values up to 54.5% U over 50 cm core length. Strong chloritization occurs in graphitic paragneiss and sandstone adjacent to mineralization. Silica was depleted from the basement rocks and redeposited at the borders of the 5-15-m-wide alteration zone, as well as within overlying sandstone of the Manitou Falls Formation. There are minimal alteration effects in the overlying Lazenby Lake Formation. Geochemistry shows that the alteration zone in the Fair Point Formation is highly anomalous in metals, most notably in Ni, As, U, Pb, Co, and B. Clay within this zone is illitic and Fe-rich chlorite is also present. Brittle deformation is not as widespread or as well developed in the Fair Point Formation as it is in the overlying Manitou Falls Formation, which is extensively brecciated and contains some anomalous metal values.

A DEPOSIT of hematite occurs on Black island, lake Winnipeg, at a point known locally as Red Rock, on the south shore of the island directly across from Clements point. The mail boat from the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Riverton, crossing the lake to Manigotogan twice weekly, passes near Red Rock and provides a convenient means of transportation to this part of Black island (Figure 1). HISTORICAL The occurrence of hematite on Black island has been known for a long time. Dowling's report of 1898 states(1): "An iron-ore deposit on the south side has been known' for many years, and on Jeffrey's map of 1762, showing Canada and northern part of Louisiana, Iron island is shown a short distance south of the narrows, evidently the same as the Black island of today".

Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author's laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. "The 1580 m long dual-tube motorway tunnel Markusberg near Schengen, Luxembourg experiences strong swelling phenomena in each tube related to a 35 m wide diagonally crossing rock layer, some150 to 200m from the east portals. Overburden over the roadway is 26 to 30 meters. Tunnel construction started in 1998 and the tunnel was opened in 2003. The tunnel was driven downgrade from the West, the heave phenomenon started to occur as the tunnel approached completion. No indications of the presence of anhydrite and dissolved sulphates were known prior to tunnelling. Water samples had been taken from the beginning of construction and the concentration of anions and cat ions determined. Sulfate content was substantial, in one well it reached 22 mg/l, this high concentration requires the presence of other ions, in particular sodium and chlorine. Based on the knowledge at the time of construction heaving ground was removed from the tunnel invert and a free space was left below the roadway that is covered by a transversely spanned slab. In addition a series of posttensioned tiebacks were installed below the sidewalls. The void left in 2003 was 1.7m high and closed to less than 0.5 meters in 2007 then it became necessary to widen the free space. A central trench was dug with a height of about 2.5 meters and the benches were lowered.Level surveying had been carried out since 2002. In 2006 two extensometers were installed, one in the zone of strongest heave, the second at the edge of the swelling zone. The extensometer in the center of the swelling zone indicated heave with an essential constant rate with seasonal variations, the heave is concentrated in layer from 2 to 5 meters that heaved by nearly 300 millimeters within 5 years or 60 mm/year, which equals to approx. 1% extension per year. At the abutments heave rates of 20 mm/year where the support resistance is higher were observed. With data from other case histories a relation of heave rate with support resistance was established. Based on the numerous field observations hypotheses for the complex in-situ swelling processes, involving rock mechanics, mineralogical, soil mechanics and hydrogeological aspects were developed"

JORC was first published in 1989 and later incorporated into the Listing Rules of the Australian and New Zealand Stock Exchanges making compliance mandatory for listing public companies in Australia and New Zealand."

"Abstract - The Lilypad Lakes property is host to a group of Ta-mineralized dikes that occur over an area of at least 10 km2. Field relationships are consistent with a syn- to late syn-tectonic timing for their emplacement (with respect to the major regional D1 episode of deformation), with several of the dikes exhibiting a steeply dipping, open, S- to M- to Z-shaped fold geometry. Individual dikes range up to 30 m wide (Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke), have strike lengths of up to 750 m (e.g., JJ Dyke), and are continuous to depths of greater than 250 m (e.g., Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke). Typically, they display sharp intrusive contacts characterized by the development of thin, holmquistite-rich haloes. The Tamineralized dikes are comprised of silica- and alumina-rich, sodic, granitic pegmatites that display extreme levels of geochemical fractionation (K/Rb typically < 10.0, as low as 2.2; Nb/Ta typically < 0.20, as low as 0.03), and enrichments in an economically important group of lithophile elements, most notably Li, Rb, Cs, and Ta. Geochemical assays of individual surface grab and drill core samples have yielded values as high as 1.51 wt.% Li2O, 1.25 wt.% Rb2O, 6.21 wt.% Cs2O, and 0.108 wt.% Ta2O5. Diamond drilling has established the presence of wide (~20 m), potentially ore-grade intersections of Ta mineralization (>0.045 wt.% Ta2O5) in both the Rubellite and the Pollucite Dykes.Three Ta-oxide minerals (microlite, wodginite, manganotantalite) of primary origin predominate in the Ta-mineralized dikes, where they occur as fine, disseminated grains in the albite-rich pegmatite matrix. The sequence of crystallization is typically manganotantalite wodginite microlite, which conforms to a well-established paragenetic sequence for rare-element granitic pegmatites in general. All three of the primary Ta oxides are characterized by a high degree of chemical purity (e.g., average Ta concentrations in microlite from 77-79 wt.% Ta2O5), a compositional feature consistent with the extreme levels of geochemical fractionation characteristic of the host granitic pegmatites, and one that indicates that the Lilypad Lakes pegmatites are likely to produce Ta mineral concentrates of the very highest quality.Locally, a second generation of Ta minerals is present, restricted to small vugs in the pegmatite matrix that are surrounded by fine aggregates of K-rich mica or clay. The secondary Ta minerals are dominated by microlite, which is typically intergrown with fluorite and Fe-sulphides, and is distinguished from its primary counterpart by its lower Ta content (around 70 wt.% Ta2O5) and much higher concentration of uranium (up to 9 wt.% UO2). Also, secondary microlite consistently yields low analytical totals from electron microprobe analysis, suggesting that it is H2O-rich. The presence of this second, vug-related generation of microlite, together with the occurrence of localized networks of crosscutting fractures that host high concentrations of Cs and Rb (in the minerals pollucite and Rb-Kfeldspar), suggests that a late-stage, fluid-dominated metasomatic/hydrothermal event may have been important in certain sections of the dikes, and has effected a redistribution of the economically important elements Ta and Cs."

"This paper examines the economic advantages of adapting the production grade and recovery targets of a flotation circuit as a function of metal prices. The study is periormed using a steady state simulator for a Cu-Zn differential flotation circuit operating under the following strategies of 1) Maintaining constant operating targets, 2) Maximizing individual circuit Net Smelter Return and 3) Maximizing the global Cu-Zn circuit efficiency. Results are compared to assess whether or not one of the strategies produces benefits significantly higher than the others. The deportment and speciation of trace elements during mining and minerals processing is becoming an area of increasing concern with regards to potential health and environment risks. The use of chemical modelling can enhance our basic understanding of the deportment and speciation of trace metals under conditions present in gold processing solutions, and assist in laboratory and field investigations. In this paper, we report the results of chemical speciation modelling using the JESS software package for the trace toxic elements Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Te in cyanidation solutions of varying salinity and relate the models to experimental data. The speciation of mercury is examined in detail.

The first commercial application of the Dynatec two-stage zinc pressure leach process commenced operation at the metallurgical complex of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited in Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1993. A key feature of the successful leaching operation is the presence of iron in solution, which facilitates oxygen transfer in the autoclaves and enables rapid oxidation of zinc sulphide minerals. At the same time, the solution from which zinc is recovered must be essentially iron free. Precipitation of iron from the solution starts in the autoclaves and is completed in subsequent atmospheric purification steps. Conveniently, these iron precipitation steps also remove nuisance elements such as arsenic and fluoride from the solution, while producing solids with good liquid-solid separation characteristics. This paper provides an overview of the current operations in Flin Flon, with particular reference to the behaviour and deportment of iron throughout the zinc plant.

The diffusion barrier coating system (DBC system) was designed to suppress interdiffusion between alloy substrate and coatings in addition to ensuring slow oxide growth at high temperatures. In this report the concept of the DBC system will be introduced, and the results obtained for various heat-resistant alloys are presented. In this DBC system the s-phase of the Re-Cr-Ni system was selected as the barrier and is formed by electroplating Re-Ni and Ni films from aqueous solutions, followed by Cr and/or Al pack cementations. A typical DBC system consists of Ni-base superalloy / triple s-Re based alloy layer / ?’-Ni3Al and/or ß-NiAl (with or without Pt addition) / a-Al2O3. It was found that the DBC system maintained its structure for long time exposures because the s phase has tie-lines with the ? and ?’ alloy substrate and the ?’ and/or ß coating. The s-Re based alloy can suppress both the inward Al diffusion and the outward diffusion of alloying elements. The DBC system was successfully applied to various heat-resistant alloys such as Ni-Mo and Fe-Cr-Al based alloys, and these alloys with the DBC system were creep-deformed slowly under external applied stresses. A simultaneous diffusion coating process for Al and Hf was developed using Hf+NH4Cl+Al2O3 pack cementation. To obtain reliable and long-life coatings the combination of alloy substrate, coating, and external scale should be considered as a total system, to optimize oxidation resistance, structural stability, and mechanical properties.

"Abstract - The Burnt Timber gold deposit is located in the Paleoproterozoic Lynn Lake greenstone belt of the Trans-Hudson Orogen, Manitoba. The deposit occurs along the Johnson shear zone, and is hosted by enriched and depleted tholeiitic volcanic arc basalts cut by feldspar porphyry dikes. The Johnson shear zone is a regional, belt-parallel structure characterized by the intensification of the regional S2 foliation. At the Burnt Timber deposit, S2 is folded by centimeter- to meter-scale, Z-shaped, F3 chevron folds that have an axial planar S3 crenulation cleavage. Within the 20 to 30 m-wide core zone of the shear zone, S2 and F3 are transposed parallel to S3 and the volcanic rocks are strongly sheared parallel to S3. The presence of a steeply plunging stretching lineation, together with dextral shear sense indicators along both S2 and S3 on horizontal surfaces, suggest that the Johnson shear zone is a dextral transpression zone. Gold was introduced in pyritic, biotitic, and carbonatized mafic volcanic rocks along the core of the shear zone. Mylonitic mafic volcanic rocks contain localized high-grade zones (=10 g/t Au) that differ from wider carbonatized, low-grade zones (<3 g/t Au) by the presence of deformed gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins. High-grade zones are also associated with swarms of quartz-pyrite veins that cut across sericitized and carbonatized feldspar porphyry dikes, which acted as brittle, competent bodies during shearing. Gold deposition in the high-grade zones was controlled by the channeling of hydrothermal fluid along the core of the shear zone during shearing of the volcanic rocks, and brittle fracturing of the porphyry dikes. Ce gîte est situé le long de la zone de cisaillement de Johnson et est encaissé dans des basaltes tholéiitiques d’arc enrichis et appauvris recoupés par des dykes porphyriques. La présence conjointe d’une linéation d’étirement à forte plongée et d’indicateurs cinématiques dextres sur les surfaces horizontales S2 et S3 suggère que la zone de cisaillement de Johnson est une zone transpressive dextre. L’or a été mis en place dans des volcanites mafiques altérées en pyrite, en biotite, et en carbonate au coeur de la zone de cisaillement. Les roches volcaniques mylonitiques présentent des zones aurifères locales à haute teneur (=10 g/t Au) qui diffèrent des zones à basse teneur (<3 g/t Au) par la présence de veines de quartz et de pyrite aurifère. Des zones à haute teneur associées à des essaims de veinules de quartz et de pyrite sont aussi notées dans des dykes porphyriques à plagioclase altérés en séricite et en carbonates; ces dykes se sont comportés comme des corps compétents durant le cisaillement. La déposition de l’or dans le zones à haute teneur a été contrôlée par la circulation du fluide hydrothermal au coeur de la zone de cisaillement durant la déformation des roches volcaniques et la fracturation des dykes porphyriques."

The SART (sulfidisation, acidification, recycle, and thickening) process is an effective way to separate copper and cyanide from each other in the waste stream of gold processing plants using cyanidation. Factorial experimentation has been conducted to create models of copper recovery, cyanide recovery, acid addition, and oxidation I reduction potential during SART. Economic analysis of the resultant models showed that SART is best operated with a sulfide to copper molar ratio of around 0.56, a pH of 4, and a minimised cyanide to copper molar ratio. The experiments also showed that thickening time may have drastic impacts on SART performance.

Despite the phase-out of earned depletion allowances for most oil and gas operations as part of the federal government&apos;s new National Energy Program, earned depletion provisions are still alive and well for the mining sector, although they might well be slowly strangling to death in their own entanglement of complexity!"

The mineral wealth of pre-Cambrian rocks in Canada has been the subject of much study by geologists and engineers (members of this Institute), particularly so in the past few years, following discoveries of mineral deposits in areas far a part. This interest is well worth sustaining knowing the numerous rich producing mines within the pre-Cambrian formations, and the vast area covered by its rocks throughout this country. The pre-Cambrian has yielded minerals, both metallic and non-metallic; of these a much diversified list could be made. In more than one district we can point to mining as being responsible for the opening up of new sections, attracting a population into regions which otherwise would have remained virgin land of little commercial value. In these pre-Cambrian formations are found the rich copper deposits of Michigan, producing without interruption since 1845, and from which seven billion pounds of copper has been won; while in Minnesota and the adjoining district, at the head of Lake Superior, are mined iron ores which have rendered possible the great steel manufacturing industry of United States, the base of the economic structure of that wealthy country. The pre-Cambrian has given Canada the nickel-copper mines of the Sudbury district, the silver deposits of Cobalt and the gold camps of Porcupine and Kirkland Lake. With all of these our members are familiar; and it suffices to mention them to bring to mind pictures of the wealth and &apos;the growing population, in a word the importance of mining in?those sections of the country.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an emerging environmental management tool for examining environmental impacts from cradle to grave. In this paper, LCA is used to evaluate the acidification potential (AP) and global warming potential (GWP) of belt conveyors and truck haulage systems in a surface gold mine using the ISO 14040 standards. The results show that, for AP, the truck system has 32 kg of equivalent SO2 per functional unit, compared to 8 kg for the conveyor system. However, for GWP, the conveyor has 2,820 kg of equivalent CO2 per functional unit, compared to 648 kg for the truck option.

Flotation testing of Flin Flon ore was started in the Denver laboratory of Complex Ores Recoveries Co. in March, 1926. There had been a considerable amount of flotation testing previously which had shown possibilities of success, and it was felt that, with the increased knowledge of flotation and the comparatively new reagents then available, flotation held out the best prospects for a successful commercial treatment of this ore. There remained available for this experimental work a small amount of the rejects from a thorough sampling of the mine and some ore from the mine dump.

Introducing online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers in the mining and processing industries can lower costs and improve the representativeness and speed of analysis. The applicability of the CON-XTM industrial conveyor XRF analyzer for continuous measurement of potassium content in process materials was demonstrated at various stages of potassium muriate (MOP) production. The CON-X analyzer produced reliable and accurate results for sylvinite ore (27–36% KCl), MOP cake after flotation (88–97% KCl), and NaCl residue (1.5–5% KCl). Tests of the analyzer at an MOP-producing plant showed a < 0.5% difference between online and laboratory results.

"The methods generally applied to predict performance and financially evaluate beneficiation options are reviewed.Typical costs f or a western Canadian thermal coal operation are examined. Preparation-from truck dump to loadout-frequently amounts 10 over a quarter of total minesite costs. Failure to achieve projected yield-whether caused by mine or plant problems-s-substantially increases production costs because more coal has 10 he mined to meet a specific market demand. Problem identification by mass/ash balances is recommended.Thorough characterization of the coal and associated waste materials and more reliable prediction of beneficiation process performance are therefore essential to determine a project &apos;s financial viability.IntroductionWestern Canadian coal prep a ration plant capacity is partway through a massive expansion program . In 198 1 potential product ion was 14 million tonnes, by 1985 it will be 26 million tonnes per year. Only two years ago the industry was concerned whether it could sustain this rate of growth to meet market demands : now with diminished market demand and lower coal prices being offered by our international competitors there are doubts whether t his potential will be fully employed , even by 1990.One direct consequence o f the occurrence of a variety of coals in a stunningly beautiful but complex geo logical setting such as the Rocky Mountains and their Foothills is that each project is unique. Coal is a low value per tonne product. To supply distant markets from geographically isolated deposit s necessitates expensive , dedicated , infrastructure . T o be profitable these operations must achieve eve ry advantage of the economy of scale.Each of the mi ne complexes commissioned in the 1970s experienced severe problems in the area o f co a l preparation . Most bought their way out , paying for major plant modifications by increasing the scale of their total operation . The current market recession may not allow new operations this route to profitability.The objective of this paper is to illustrate the economic impact of coal preparation problems on the profitability o f the total minesite operation and thus provide a sound basis for decision making process."
