The influence of pulp density, ferric ion concentration and particle size on the tank bioleaching of two kinds of refractory gold concentrates are discussed. The chemistry and mechanism of the bioleaching process are also presented. The relationship between oxidation of sulphides, liberation of enclosed gold and gold cyanidation are discussed. The consumption of NaCN could be reduced by alkaline treatment of bioleached residues prior to Cyanidation.

This paper describes a steam outburst in a metal mine which occurred in December 1992 in Japan, resulting in two fatalities. The outburst occurred just after blasting in a heading face 600 m below surface (SL-50 m), 1664 m from a mouth of the mine. The scale of the outburst was large and the fragments of the outburst spread up to 34 m from the face, the total volume of the outburst was estimated to be 206 m3. The outburst materials were mostly clay originated from the typical surrounding rock of sulfide ore and basalt. The shape of the larger outburst fragments were slabs with a thickness of 10 to 20 cm. The victims were found in a main ventilation air shaft, 175 m and 380 m from the face, respectively. The mine mainly produces copper, lead and zinc. The face was ventilated by a 560 mm diameter duct with a fan and the strata temperature of the rock was estimated to be in the range of 120 to 140¦C. There is a famous hot spring near the mine. A thorough investigation into the unprecedented accident was made including an on-site inspection and investigation of rock characteristics in laboratories.

Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

This paper is a tribute to the late Dr Donald Martin Hausen as a father of applied mineralogy. His dedication to promoting the field through technical societies and through his professional work was outstanding, and his activities as a humanitarian are noteworthy. Dr HausenÆs involvement in technical societies included organising and conducting the only ICAM congress that was held in the USA, co-founding and nurturing the Process Mineralogy Committee within the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers, and participating in CAM, the International Mineral Processing Congress, as well as other technical societies. The Process Mineralogy Committee that he co-founded has continuously organised annual meetings in the USA by conducting a series of sessions, and 17 books on the proceedings from those sessions have been published. As an applied mineralogist Dr Hausen solved many problems in exploitation and processing of minerals, metals and materials, especially gold. He helped to find many Carlin-type gold orebodies by outlining targets using alteration halos as determined by X-ray diffractometry, and he defined mineral characteristics that affected gold metallurgy and cyanidation. It is also noteworthy that Dr Hausen and his wife, Mary, opened their arms and home to many foster children and were instrumental in their placement in many homes. They also sponsored refugees from south-east Asia, taught them English, housed them, and provided constant support until the refugees became responsible and independent US citizens.

In June 1989 a diving cruise of the French submersible Nautile has been carried out on the North Fiji basin spreading ridge. The objective of the cruise was the geological and geochemical study of the active spreading axis and associated hydrothermalism processes. This operation was the third cruise of the French-Japanese STARMER project following two cruises of the R/V Kaiyo in 1987 and 1988.INTRODUCTIONAfter the Seapso III cruise (Auzende et al., 1986, 1988a and b) of the R/V Jean Charcot in 1985, the objective of the Kaiyo 87 and 88 cruises was the complementary Seabeam mapping of the North Fiji Basin spreading axis between WS and 22'S and a systematic sampling (water and rocks) and deep towing (TV and photos) at about every ten milles along the axis.

The evaluation of ore deposits consumes much effort, cost and time, hence research work must aim to minimize these inputs with no loss of accuracy. The present study is devoted to assess the optimum conditions and methods of calculations which give minimum costs of ore exploration. An area of (a x a) where "a" is the zone of influence of the semi-variogram, i.e. (2800 x 2800 square metres) located within the Abu Tartur plateau is the subject of the intensive study. The distances between boreholes are varied ie. a/4, a/6, a/8 and a/ 10 respectively. The average ore grade (G), thickness (t) and relative ore reserves (tG) are calculated by four methods. The results indicate that at a distance equal to a/5, the inverse distance squared method gives the best results. These parameters save about 50 percent of the cost of exploration with a map accuracy greater than 90 Percent.

The use of Non-Linear Programming to obtain improved schedules of future activity in two specific cases of mining and treatment of minerals is described. The two cases were (i) reclamation of gold, uranium and sulphur from old surface tailings dams and, (ii) underground mining of gold. The method used an augmented Lagrangian device to reduce a constrained Non-Linear Programme to a sequence of unconstrained hill- climbing procedures. The main advantages of the method appear to be those of (a)flexibility of modelling of industrial characteristics and constraints and, (b) reasonably modest computation times.

Blast furnace is a countercurrent moving bed reactor that produces pig iron from iron bearing materials like pellet, sinter or lump ore. The furnace has cylindrical shape and the lump solid materials are alternatively charged onto the top of the furnace. Hot air is introduced through tuyeres that are set on the lower furnace wall. Auxiliary fuels (pulverised coal, oil or natural gas) and raw materials (fine ore or fluxes) are injected into the furnace with blast air from the tuyeres. In front of the tuyeres, coke particles react with oxygen in the blast air and generate carbon monoxide. The hot reacting gas heats up the lump solids and reduces iron oxides in the upper furnace. In the middle height of the furnace, the reduced iron and slag are fused by the combustion heat and form the cohesive zone. The molten iron and slag that are generated in this region trickle down through the packed bed of coke particles and flow into the bottom of the furnace. Therefore, the flows of gas, lump solids and liquids exist at the same time in the lower part of the blast furnace.

The truly scientific method in the study of such questions at the present day is the reverse of that which was followed in the early days of geology, when after the observation of a few isolated facts, some great geological mind was led to a general theory, and humbler followers were only too apt to do mild violence to nature in order to make her facts conform to it tt accumulates year after year a multitude of facts of patient observation, supported by studies with the microscope, and in the laboratory, avoiding general theories, and only making such deductions in regard to locftl conditions as are supported by the overwhelming evidence of facts. Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothÖ û a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio TintoÆs Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothÖ system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothÖ system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

Pilot plant work has played a major role in the process development and design phase of the Iscor Heavy Minerals project. The pilot plant campaigns have been aimed at three process areas, namely primary beneficiation (wet gravity circuits), heavy mineral separation and ilmenite smelting. A process development structure was put in place, and the various pilot plants designed and built. A number of pilot campaigns were conducted during the project phase since 1995, and most of the key objectives were achieved. Various other valuable ælessonsÆ were learnt, and were incorporated in the full-scale plant designs, or used to change operating philosophies, equipment choices et cetera. The cost and durations of the pilot runs were significant, and an analysis indicated that the major risk and technology area of smelting has contributed more than 70 per cent of the total cost.

The Hodgkinson Province forms the northern part of the Tasman Orogen and contains the most extensive outcrops of Silurian - Devonian rocks in Queensland. Deep-water, marine siliciclastic sequences (mainly turbidites) dominate most of the province except near the western margin where mafic volcanics and fossiliferous limestones characterise much of the succession. It is difficult to apply normal stratigraphic mapping techniques to the Hodgkinson Province because of extensive stratal disruption by numerous thrust faults, the general lack of stratigraphic and structural markers, and the unfossiliferous nature of much of the succession. Nevertheless, several distinct units have been delineated although their internal stratigraphy or boundary or superpositional relationships are uncertain. Ordovician strata, as well as two major unconformities have been recognised in the western part of the province. Several models have been proposed to explain the evolution of the Hodgkinson Province. Although there is no general agreement most recent researchers favour an extensional tectonic regime.

Spatial data processing using geographic information systems produces qualitative results which are superior to those from other existing software tools. However, the answers to various quantitative questions in mining operations is often limited by the capacity of the GIS to process appropriate spatial data. The efficient operation of a large underground mine demands that an adequate GIS be put in place.

Recent advances in technology have allowed many of the problems of directional control of long diamond drill holes to be overcome. Three case histories are presented, from Cobar, Hilton North and Mount Isa Mine, in which careful hole design and the use of wedges and down-the-hole motors have allowed tight directional control of drilling. Substantial savings in time and cost were achieved in all three cases.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The increase in the zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit with magnetic conditioning was demonstrated to a very high level of statistical confidence.CITATION:Gurnett, I, Voigt, P, Lumsden, B and Lines, P, 2012. To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing costs compared to blasting cost. The old adage, 'The cheapest crushing is done in the pit', appears accurate in this case study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of powder, selected wear materials and electricity, indicate a strong, inverse correlation with powder factor (lbs powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone. Measurable, overall costs decline while shovel and crusher productivity rise by about five per cent when powder factor rises by 15 per cent. These trends were previously masked by the effects of weather, ore grade fluctuations and accounting practices.
