Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. The complexity of understanding the whole thickening process to achieve real performance improvements cannot be underestimated. The last significant change in feedwell design was more than 15 years ago with the introduction of self-dilution systems û firstly with OutotecÆs Autodil, followed by FLSmidthÆs E-Duc. Now, following many years of extensive in-house research, including close collaboration with AMIRA and the CSIRO, Outotec has launched the next generation Vane Feedwell. The Vane Feedwell has been globally patented and installed at various sites. This paper briefly outlines the feedwellÆs development using CFD modelling and its subsequent performance in a æreal lifeÆ site installation. Plant results of the first commercial Vane Feedwell, in a mineral sands application, are discussed. The Vane Feedwell was retrofitted so comparative data of pre- and post-installation is shown.

The Circum-Pacific area is one of the most important gigantic skarn-metallogenic belts in the world. In more than 20 coastwise countries of this region, there exist thousands skarn deposits of different types. According to the differences of major metallic elements, the skarn deposits may be classified into seven subtypes, i.e. Fe, Cu, Pb-Zn, W, Sn, Mo and Au skarn deposits. In this paper, the distribution. and geological characteristics of above-mentioned types of skarn deposits are described briefly. Skarn deposits may also be classified on the basis of the dominant calc(magnesian)-silicate mineral assemblages into four types: magnesian, calcic, manganoan, and alkaline skarn types. Magnesian skarns may be associated with Fe, Cu, Au,, Sn, B, Be mineralization, calcic skarns with Fe, Cu, W, Mo, An, Be, Pb, Zn, Sn minerailization, while the alkaline skarns occur in U(Th, Nb) deposits. The skarn deposits of both East and West Pacific rims have many general characters, but have some diferences in geotectonic settings, intensities of mineralization, distribution, and metallogenic epoches. In this paper, the minerogenetic series and the mineralizing specialities of related magmatic rocks of the skarn deposits are also discussed.

Most orebodies have one or more boundaries which are gradational, where the decision to stop mining is based on an economic cut-off. To maximise profit, this cut-off grade must be chosen correctly. It is necessary to review cut-off grades regularly, as the optimum cut-off grade changes with time, and major changes are hard to implement in a working mine without disruption to production schedules.Whenever a cut-off grade is used, there will be errors in its application caused by errors in the estimation of block grade. These can be minimised by stringent quality control in sampling and by the use of kriging, which attempts to minimise the absolute errors in grade estimation. The kriging method used should produce the most accurate estimates of marginal grade blocks - this will not necessarily be the technique that gives the best overall prediction of head grades.

The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

The present value of the future profits of a mining operation, using a discount factor which represents the effective cost of venture capital, provides a measure of the projected success of the operation. The present value can be maximised by appropriate selection of cut-off grades successively through the life of the operation. A case study is presented in which detailed optimisation of cut-off grade results in a worthwhile increase in profitability compared with the use of a constant, break even, cut-off grade.Some implications of this approach to profit optimisation are discussed.

All high stopes and pillars in Anqing Copper Mine were extracted by use of large-diameter longhole mining method. The height of stopes was 120 m. The forced mining was the leading concept that the safe and efficient operation was carried out in this mine, while the mining production was faced with the major technical problems on the stability of both primary ore pillars produced in the first-step stoping of stopes and the cemented fillbody on two sides of stope in the second-step stopping of pillars. Starting with mining technology, the authors emphatically describe the test results obtained in Anqing Copper Mine and make an approach to the deployment prospects and development trend of large-diameter longhole mining technology in China underground metal mines.

An algorithm is described which leads directly to a unique set of coal washing parameters which, in two or more parallel streams, will give maximum yield of product at a given ash. This occurs when all parallel streams are washed to the same incremental ash. A fundamental study was carried out on super pit sulphidic gold ore to establish the most influential flotation characteristics which were subsequently used in the development of an optimum flowsheet to achieve best economical recovery of gold. In developing the flowsheet, consideration was given to existing operational constraints in the treatment of the Super Pit ore. The fundamental study also included an innovative diagnostic investigation to establish the location and value of gold in the major mineral assembly of the super pit ore from a metallurgical rather than a mineralogical perspective. This study mapped a metallurgical fingerprint of the major types of super pit ore in relation to the location and association of gold.
