The design, construction and operation ofa laboratory scale rotary pot kiln are outlined. Charges ofup to 3 kg can be heated to temperatures up to 1200°C in a controlled atmosphere. Some examples of pyrometallurgical investigations carried out using the kiln are briefly described, including thermal reactivation ofcarbon using steam at 550-850°C, high temperature testing ofkiln liners for corrosion resistance to fluoride, and calcination oflimestone. Results obtained from these trials allow either direct scale-up to the Engineering Chemistry Laboratory's pilot-scale (50-100 kg/hr) rotary kiln or modifications to be made to commercial scale processes and/or equipment.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. A description is presented of the results of reduction experiments using a laboratory reduction apparatus in which simulation of the gas and temperature profiles which occur in direct reduction shaft furnaces is achieved using microcomputer control. The apparatus allows continously changing reduction conditions to be impressed on lump or pellet samples to simulate the environment that is experienced by iron ore burdens during their transit down the shaft of a direct reduction furnace. Three pellet samples and three lump ore samples were reduced in the apparatus. Comparative reduction curves and strengths after reduction for the materials were obtained over a range of reduction temp- eratures using Midrex-type gas compositions. The resulting reduction and strength curves show considerable variation in behaviour and reflect the physical and chemical variations in the individual ore and pellet types. A comparison is made of the reduction rates and modes of reduction of the samples reduced under "conventional" test conditions using a single unchanging gas composition and the simulated shaft furnace reduction conditions. It was observed that the course of reduction is very different in the two procedures and the major influence of temperature on the strength of the reduced product is noted.

Fragmentation control is perhaps the most critical aspect of quarrying operations, potentially impacting on the costs of all down stream processes, and sometimes even on the economic viability of an operation. The focal points of studies to control fragmentation are generally the pattern of blastholes, the accuracy of drilling, and the most appropriate powder factor. Recent studies suggest that the performance, and consistency of performance, of explosive detonation in the blastholes may also be a significant factor impacting on blast performance in hard rock quarries. This paper presents the results of studies of bulk emulsion and watergel explosive performance, using blasthole velocity of detonation measurements, and its impact on fragmentation. Field studies show a strong correlation between blasthole VoD and blast fragmentation. Another aspect of explosive performance impacting on ease of excavation of blasted rock is muckpile displacement, from which estimates of effective heave energy have been made for different bulk slurry (emulsion and watergel) products.

The Wiluna mining operations are centred near the township of Wiluna 750 kilometres north-east of Perth and 600 kilometres east of Geraldton.The Wiluna gold mines produced over two million ounces of gold, predominantly by roasting the refractory sulphide ores, before closing in 1947. In the period 1984 to 1992, 668 000 ounces of gold has been produced from free milling oxide ores and the retreatment of tailing. A plant capable of treating the refractory sulphide ores using the bacterial oxidation, Biox technique was commissioned in March, 1993.The Wiluna lode deposits are hosted by a sequence of very low grade metamorphosed mafic flows at the northern end of the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt. A strike slip fault system provided conduits for fluid migration; ore deposition occurred at favourable sites along the faults. Satellite mines at Gourdis and Wiluna South provide laterite and lode style oxide ores.The different styles of deposit and ore types at the Wiluna mining operations require a flexible approach to resource estimation and grade control practices.

The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

Zinc-bearing massive sulphide deposits have been mined in Tasmania since 1900. The current major producers are Hellyer and Rosebery, with total resource tonnages (mined plus reserves) of 16 Mt (million tonnes) and 24.8 Mt respectively. These deposits belong to the class of seafloor volcanic-hosted massive sulphides (VHMS) and are located within the Mt Read Volcanics, a narrow belt of continental margin calcalkaline volcanics of Cambrian age. Compared to other Australian VHMS deposits, and world-wide MVT and Sedex deposits, the Tasmanian examples clearly stand-out due to their high metal grades, averaging over 17 per cent Pb+Zn. The deposits vary in morphology from mound style (Hellyer) to sheet style (Rosebery) with other combinations including stacked lenses (Que River) and disrupted cross-cutting bodies (Hercules). All deposits show the classic VHMS zonation from an Fe-Cu-bearing base to a Zn-Pb-Ba-rich top. Zinc, gold and silver tenor commonly increases toward the stratigraphic top of the deposits. The ores have been deformed during regional metamorphism, resulting in folding, shearing and recrystallisation of sulphide lenses. In addition to the major deposits, a number of small massive sulphide prospects occur throughout the volcanic belt and the potential for the discovery of further large, deeply buried deposits remains high.

The fragmentation of whole rock by blasting has an influence on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. However, no method of calculating the frag- mentation has yet been developed. This paper gives a method of calculating the fragmen- tation for the simplest form of blasting, i.e. cratering. Cratering consists of the detonation of a spherical charge of explosive in a blasthole breaking to one free surface. This paper gives a method of calculating the extent of the system of radial cracks generated by the explosive in the rock. This system of radial cracks is then used to calculate the fragment size distribution curve from blasting. The calculated curves are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. The development of the SECV brown coal open cut at Loy Yang will require depressurisation of aquifers both within and below the coal seam sequence in order to maintain open cut stability. Prediction of future open cut dewatering requirements at Loy Yang Open Cut and evaluation of the regional consequences of dewatering has required development of a detailed hydrogeological model of the Loy Yang area. The complex stratigraphy of the coal seam and aquifer/aquitard sequences at Loy Yang have been analysed and integrated with the hydrogeological concepts developed from regional groundwater studies to formulate a realistic hydrogeological model as a basis for finite-element flow modelling.

Lithocaps are potentially voluminous zones of advanced argillic and associated argillic alteration located above the subvolcanic intrusive environment. They constitute exploration objectives for epithermal and porphyry-type deposits. High-sulphidation epithermal deposits may be sought within lithocaps, whereas low-sulphidation deposits may exist on their edges. Porphyry Cu-Au/Au deposits may be accessible beneath lithocaps if systems are telescoped sufficiently. Oxidation of the basal, pyritic parts of lithocaps may promote supergene sulphide enrichment under appropriate tectonic and climatic conditions.

Industrial minerals and rocks (alternat ively called non-metallic minerals) are those- which are economically important because of their desirable physical or chemical properties rather than their metal or energy content. They are divided into nine classes: structural, pig- ments, process aids, ceramics and refractories, chemical source minerals, abrasives, foundry minerals, gem stones, electrical minerals. Development of deposits is influenced by the dominance of marketing,by the required range of products, the-need for specialized process- ing, place value, and the transportation and distribution of high-bulk, low-cost commodities. Evaluation is different from that of base metals because of differences in geological occurrence, sampling methods, testing, treatment, placing a money-value on the material and the importance of export markets.

Using a small scale laboratory pilot plant a series of tests have been conducted with the aim of investigating the influence of the zinc/acid ratio on the efficiency of zinc electrodeposition from an acidic sulphate solution. The results have shown that current efficiency is increased as the zinc/acid ratio is increased with no evidence of an optimum zinc/acid ratio. However the choice of a zinc/acid ratio for full scale operations must be a compromise between other parameters, spent electrolyte acidity and power efficiency, which also impact upon plant performance. The effect of various impurities has also been monitored and antimony, nickel and tin have been shown to be deliterious to current efficiency.

Using a typical small logging instrument (Neltronic KPD), a natural gamma reference section for part of the Brockman Iron Formation and part of the Mt. McRae Shale has been established in the Newman area. This is compared with the stratigraphic type section of Trendall and Blockley (1968). Folding and faulting are recognised using natural gamma logs. Because of the confidence with which stratigraphic horizons can be identified, less expenditure on diamond and percussion drilling is required to confirm stratigraphic position. Using natural gamma logs as stratigraphic control the apparent thinning of the Banded Iron Formation during iron enrichment is Demonstrated.

Iron ore in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia varies in composition giving iron ore a range of densities. An accurate density figure of the material leads to accurate calculations of production throughput. Density studies of two separate iron ore mines were conducted in the Pilbara. Procedures and results are reported here.The Pilbara Region of Western Australia has a number of iron ore operations. Two mines have conducted density studies of their materials. The purpose for the studies was to determine an accurate in situ bulk density that could be applied to volume and tonnage calculations of the operation. It was identified that density was one culprit causing calculation variations. Density is an important figure used to estimate ore reserves, equipment requirements, production rates and indirectly costs and sales revenue. One study was conducted at Rio TintoÆs Robe River Mine based near the town of Pannawonica. Its Mesa J orebody is currently being mined and is a low-grade deposit of goethite and hematite (Burnham, 2003). A separate study was conducted at BHP BillitonÆs Yarrie Mine situated north of Newman and east of Pardoo. Its orebody consists of high grade formed by a supergene enrichment of cherty material and a burial metamorphism to produce hematite (Richardson, 2002). The method used to determine density was by large-scale samples using the pre-mining in situ volume of the material and the weight in tonnes after mining.

A study has been made into the influence of feed size distribution on the flotation response of coal. The results show that a full description of the flotation response of a coal must not only consider the inherent floatability of the coal, but also, the size distribution of the feed to flotation. The performances of a number of flotation circuits were compared using a coal which was "poorly floating" because of its size distribution. Split feed flotation, two stage reagent addition, and reflotation of classified tailings all gave better yields than that obtained by conventional single stage flotation. The optimum flotation circuit for the washing of the coal in question, was reflotation of classified tailings.

Performance of draglines in large scale overburden stripping operations is critical to the efficiency of a major section of the Australian Coal Mining Industry. Optimisation of dragline productivity requires an understanding of a range of operating conditions and constraints. One of the least understood of these operations is the process of bucket filling and how this may vary with respect to variable operating conditions.Studies conducted at The University of Queensland over a number of years into this problem have enabled the mechanics of excavating to be assessed for different types of fragmented rock. In relation to bucket filling, factors such as fill volume, digging time and energy consumption have been found to be significant factors in optimising bucket design, bucket rigging and operational techniques.

A method for relating operating variables and dewatering parameters of Thunes disc filters in the LKAB pelletizing plant at Malmberget in Sweden, via empirical mathematical models is described. Near orthogonal experimental design was used, where all independentvariables were allowed to span over their domain of variation and pseudo-randomly distributed among the experiments. The dewatering parameters are dependent on many variables and instead of using a traditional mechanistic model, an empirical model based on multivariate data analysis was chosen. The way of expressing the relation is by regression coefficients obtained from partial least square regression (PLS). Two empirical models were generated. The models were validated using an extra set of 56 experiments. The dewatering parameters were related to the design variables with few experiments, and user-friendly response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal conditions.

Construction of twin stacked railway tunnels through mixed ground conditions in the heavily populated urban environment of Hong Kong, including tunnelling in poor ground conditions, with low cover and under or adjacent to sensitive structures with minimal impact was the challenge presented by the tunnelling section of the Kowloon Southern Link project. This paper details how twin 1.1 km tunnels of 7.0 m internal diameter were driven by Mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in mixed ground through one of the exclusive shopping and hotel districts in Kowloon. The paper addresses the challenges required to be considered and managed for the success of the project, including ground conditions, TBM selection, Mixshield TBM operation, settlement monitoring and control, ground- borne noise and vibration, proximity to utilities, buildings, roads and operating railways.
