The proportion of coal production from underground operations in Queensland, is likely to increase in the future. A portion of this increase will come from mines working under farming areas. The degree of compatibility between underground coal mining operations and farming is examined. Two case histories are considered in detail. These relate to farming areas in the Moura and Emerald districts. Mining the Moura, area has been undertaken for the last two and half decades, while in the Emerald area, large scale underground coal mining is currently being planned. Interference to watercourses and water harvesting programmes, damage to crops, and ponding in cultivated areas have been experienced in mining areas. With expansion of underground mining in farming areas, the principle areas of likely conflict are the effects of surface subsidence on irrigation and erosion control structures. Other potential problems that may arise in particular circumstances include reduction in availability of water for harvesting, pollution, surface cracking and damage to surface structures. Finely textured soils and erratic and violent rainfall patterns make farming in central Queensland particularly vulnerable to severe soil erosion unless strict precautions are taken. Soil erosion control is an essential part of farming. Contour banks are used to ensure that runoff velocities are suitably low. Where steep slopes are encountered, grassing is the most effective way to prevent erosion.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the equipment used for diamond drilling at Mount Isa, together with alterations and recent improvements therein. As the majority of the drilling is carried out with machines running at relatively high speeds using XRN blast hole bits, the paper is mainly devoted to this branch of drilling.Because diamond bit costs constitute the major expense, a considerable amount of research into bit design has been carried out, and in several instances, costs per foot have shown an appreciable decrease in spite of rising manufacturing costs and higher diamond prices. Equipment performance has at times been erratic due to delays in delivery and occasionally because of faulty parts, but in general the position has improved by keeping in close contact with the manufacturers.BLASTHOLE DRILLING MACHINESThe standard blasthole diamond drill is the 'E-500' two cylinder air powered model manufactured by Mineral Drillers Limited. Several of the older pattern JV41 are still in use, but are being retired as they wear out.. Machines are repaired in the underground diamond drill shop.The normal feed gears used when drilling in lead shales are 350 top gear and 450 low gear-actually 357 and 438 revolutions per inch of advance respectively. The 300 gear was commonly used several years ago, but it was found that bit footages could be increased without any appreciable drop in penetration rate by reducing to the 350 gear. After the minim operation, most raw materials that occur in the earth's crust require some form of processing or refining before they can be converted into a final end product. In the mineral industry these remarks apply to materials such as iron ore, bauxite, limestone, copper ore and many others that are found in Australia in large quantities. Processing plants for these raw materials operate more efficiently, however, if the feed to them is consistent in both physical and chemical characteristics. Such uniformity rarely occurs in nature so that some form of homogenisation, or blending, is required ahead of the processing plant. Bending also assists the mining operation itself by reducing; the need for selective mining and, by combining high and low grade materials, a more uniformly graded, commercially acceptable product can be obtained, thereby increasing the commercial life of a mine or quarry. Bed blending is the most efficient of the processes available, and following its development in the United States in 1905, over 100 plants have been installed, or are under construction, all over the world. The original process, the Robins--Nessiter system, has been the subject of continued improvements and refinements, so that economical capacities are possible from less than 100 l.t.p.h. up to 10,000 l.t.p,h. and beyond.

I take it the character of addresses to conventions, should, following precedent, avoid details, and treat subjects rather from a philosophical point of view so far as they will permit.In the subject about to be treated on, an endeavour will be made to find here we stand as regards the past, in order that we may the better, hope to look correctly in the direction to be followed.It may be assumed that the main object of the Institute is to forward mining interests and the ways in which engineers can aid those interests are many. If all of us were to try to follow many of those interests we should become like" jacks of all trades and masters of none". Mining engineering is consequently subdivided, all are necessary to the common end, and it is on one of those divisions I have undertaken to address you. The subject or steam pumping is a large one, and I regret, not having received such longer notice as would have enabled me to do better justice to the subject, and more respectful regard for yourselves. I must, however, under the circumstances, crave your generous consideration, and hope the topics mentioned may furnish material for discussion and future papers of far more value than this one, Ind.eed, the subject is so illtimately and historically associated with mining that if treated on its merits would be highly interesting or could be made so in more capable hands.

The major operational objectives of a mine water resource management system (WRMS) are to supply the water needs of the mine and mill, to minimise disturbance to mining due to rainfall flooding or seepage and to dispose of excess water. Historically, company management have placed a significantly lower emphasis on managing the WRMS as compared to managing production. Changing Government legislation concerned with the disposal of water from mine sites is, in many cases making mining companies look more closely at how they manage their water. For example, within the next few years it is likely that prior to mining approval by the Government, mining operations will have to submit water management plans/budgets and contingency strategies in addition to operational plans. While the formulation of a comprehensive water management plan/budget is an additional cost to the company at the mine establishment stage, such plans can be beneficial to the operation in the longer term.The two keys for the efficient design, operation and development of a WRMS are the establishment of written goals which have managerial priority and secondly, access to appropriate good quality data. Managerial priority towards the WRMS will increase as a consequence of the education of mine operators in the benefits to the operation of good WRMS management or less desirably as a requirement to meet Government legislation. The collection of appropriate WRMS data is a more complex issue and to obtain information efficiently and cost effectively relies on the clear definition of the data application.

The backfilling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 Mtpa underground Long Hole Open Stoping (LHOS) operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), surface rockfill and underground rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via boreholes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process either at optical or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the placement of both rock and CAF fill in the stopes. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimisation of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilisation of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill monitoring device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the backfilling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by æseeingÆ through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is also discussed.

Petroleum exploration in the Australian arid zone has been proceeding at an ever-increasing pace, subject to financial fluctuations, since the 1960's. The impacts of petroleum exploration in the arid zone are less than they would be for corresponding operations in. e.g. a forest area: in this context, Australia is fortunate in that its major petroleum producing (and prospective) , basins are offshore or in the arid zone. In addition. the other major sources of impact in the Austrlian arid zone, namely pastoralism, tourism, and rabbits, tend to be concentrated around areas of particular conservation significance, whereas petroleum exploration is not. Despite this, the cumulative impacts of exploration are sufficient to have caused concern to government regulatory authorities and some sectors of the general public. Exploration is now subject to a range of environmental constraints with various degrees of legal enforceability. To enable exploration to continue without public opposition, the industry, and government agencies charged with regulating or supervising it, must demonstrate that the net benefits of exploration exceed net costs, including environmental costs. One particularly simple and cost-effective technique for increasing the net benefit/cost ratio of exploration is to reduce the net environmental costs by minimising and mitigating the impacts, both primary and secondary, of seismic acqisition. This is best achieved by a combination of preventive and restorative techniques: careful line positioning and low-impact (or zero) line clearance, coupled with simple rehabilitation of bladed lines. Line clearance without bulldozer blading - e.g. by rolling or simply pegging and trafficking, perhaps with tracked rather than rubber-tyred vibroseis - is one promising approach currently coming into use. Rehabilitation by grading soil banks ("windrows") back on to bladed tracks, though not yet in widespread use, has proved very successful in the limited areas where it has been applied to date.

Gold/silver orebodies of the Golden Plateau deposit, Cracow, Central Queensland, are currently being exploited by the Cracow Mining Venture. A geostatistical block model has been prepared to assist with long term mine planning. The Golden Plateau orebody, of inferred epithermal origin, is a multiply brecciated, silicified fault complex containing irregular, tabular and pipe- like oreshoots. Historically the lode has been stoped and open cut over a strike length of 750 metres at widths of up to 15 metres and to a depth of 250 metres. The Golden Plateau mine produced 1.55 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 12 g/t Au and 13.5 g/t Ag over a 42 year period. In the preparation of the reserve model much reliance has been placed on recent diamond and reverse circulation drilling (71 holes in total). However a significant volume of data has been derived from historical level assays and underground diamond drilling. Over 3,000 level assays and 50 underground drill holes contributed to the database. Similar lognormal populations were observed for 1 metre composite grades from each major drilling campaign once corrections were made for core loss. Cumulative frequency plots revealed only one outlier which was cut to the population line. The population statistics from the historical level assays showed a significant difference from those derived from the drill hole composites. Level assay populations were cut to local drill hole populations before incorporation into the ore reserve model. The resulting data has yielded interpretable variograms, the parameters of which have been applied to the preparation of a kriged block model of the deposit.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with Geology in Exploration. The first, published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Proceedings Nos. 143-144, 1946, was written as an introduction to the subject and employed the exploration geology of the Cobar field to illustrate the prospect thinking. This paper will be concerned with the problem of ore repetition in depth and borrow its- example from the Mount Lyell copper field. The writing will be taken up altogether by the example. Nevertheless the intention remains to develop the subject in terms of its wide interest and application.The Mount Lyell field possesses large actual and prospective resources within, and in the vicinity of, the known deposits. This paper does not bear at all on these accessible ore reserves and tangible prospects. There is also in this area evidence of deep ore. The possibility is of little practical interest at present. But the picture of ore repetition, exemplified by the Mount Lyell field, does matter now to the outlook on exploration in this country. For once this essential feature of ore occurrence is widely understood there may develop, on the scale warranted, the search for major deposits which do not outcrop but which are still at shallow depths because of the part erosion plays in this story of concealment and exposure of ore. Also there is the chance in some fields (including Mount Lyell) of a second harvest of orebodies within mineable depths. This exploration goal, introduced in the first paper, will appear more clearly as the Geology in Exploration series is written up. Here the concern is to show the character of the geological evidence which points to the occurrence and recurrence of ore in the earth's crust, the picture at the foundation of this exploration scheme. The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Location The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located approximately 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. (Figure 1). Located within the picturesque Darling Ranges, the land was previously used for forestry activities prior to mining commencing in mid-1987. Mineralisation is hosted within deeply weathered felsic and intermediate intrusions and volcanic rocks of the Saddleback Greenstone Belt.

A geostatistical study is made of the drilling results available one stage prior to the present for a tabular deposit. The results show that the blocks required by the mining engineers could have been assessed by the earlier drilling grid with an accuracy significantly better than that obtained by applying conventional methods at the present stage.

The flocculation of hydrophobic magnetite with gold was examined as a possible means of recovering fine (95 per cent were possible for 1.5 - 3.0 ¦m and 5.5 - 7.5 pm gold sizes. Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. Performance trials followed the commissioning of three large mine fans at Mount Isa in 1965. Actual performance characteristics were determined. These were in good agreement with predicted performance. Piezometer rings for volume flow and pressure measurement were calibrated, and the performance of some aerodynamic components of the installation was studied.Test equipment, preparation, and conditions are described.
