The production of high-grade calcined bauxite is very dependent on the moisture content of the final product. Existing procedures rely on the ignition of small samples to monitor the effectiveness of the calcination process. The results obtained by this gravimetric technique are several hours behind production and do not permit regular adjustment of the furnace to optimize the control of the chemically bound water content (LOI).To provide rapid and hence more relevant results, a neutron moderation technique has been developed for measuring the LOI of bulk samples of calcined bauxite while they are still hot. The method uses fast neutrons from an 241 Am-Be neutron source to irradiate the samples, and the backscattered thermal neutrons detected are a measure of bound moisture content.The rms deviation between neutron and conventional determinations of LOI, in 15 calcined bauxite samples, was 0.08 per cent LOI over the range 0.1 to 0.9 per cent LOI. When allowance is made for the rms error in the ignition method, the error in the neutron method is found to be 0.07 per cent LOI.

The cement industry requires large quan- tities of limestone, its main raw material. It is the major consumer of this mineral. Limestone is widely distributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport considerations render most deposits of no economic value. Of those which are sufficiently close to the major me- tropolitan markets many are rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major development, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. Detailed geological investigations are necessary, not only to prove raw material sources prior to establishment of a cement works but also to permit planned extraction programmes and satisfactory grade control during subsequent development. Conventional field techniques have generally proved adequate for raw material exploration. Data assessment and reserves estimation also are by conventional methods although the specific requirements of the industry relating to raw material and cement quality, the type of manufacturing process and fuel used are relevant. Flooding with surface water is the preferred technique for the abatement of acidification from pyrite oxidation in the lakes of abandoned Lusatian lignite mines. However, water resources of the region are limited and in addition, interruption of water inflow during the summer and the termination of the flooding process after reaching the final water level can lead to a re-acidification of the lakes. The development of three mining lakes with a surface-water flooding history of six to 28 years was analysed û in two lakes on the basis of fortnightly to monthly hydrochemical monitoring data. During summer flooding interruption, the younger lakes showed a decrease in pH from neutral down to pH 4. The degree of the pH decrease depended on the intensity of the groundwater inflow from the overburden dumps and this affected the hypolimnion more than the epilimnion. The third lake was flooded 28 years ago and up to now, interruption of the surface water inflow resulted in re-acidification. These three examples were able to show the benefits and limits of the surface water flooding technique for the abatement of Lusatian mining lake acidification.

The main factors controlling the electro- winning of zinc from impure aqueous sulphate electrolytes are reviewed. Zinc, hydrogen and impurities are deposited at the cathode. The current effic- iency for zinc is increased by increasing zinc/ acid ratio and current density and by decreas- ing temperature; and may be unchanged, increased or decreased by the presence of impurity ions. A qualitative comparison of observed and predicted impurity effects is in reasonable agreement. Quantitative treatment of the effects of impurities and cell additives is not available. A tentative explanation of the time dependence of current efficiency in the presence of some impurities is provided. The forms in which impurities are deposited is substantially unknown. Impurities may be classified according to the extent of cathodic deposition. Procedures for control of cathodic deposition of impurities are outlined. The main anodic reactions are the forma- tion of oxygen, manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid. Minor reactions include the oxidation of lead, silver, cobalt and chloride. This paper summarises research work carried out at the Western Australian School of Mines on mine backfill properties in the last few years. The fill properties presented relate to cemented aggregate fill and cemented tailings fill. Emphasis of these studies has been placed on the composition of backfill materials including aggregate particle size distribution, cement dosage and influence of cement admixtures. The unique features of the backfill research carried out at WASM during the last few years are the accomplishment of a study into the properties of large cemented rockfill samples by triaxial testing and the investigation of the properties of fill material made from highly saline ground water prevailing in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. Exploring different cost-effective binding agents for mine backfill was also carried out at WASM. Special effort has been put on the development of fill materials compatible with hydraulic and paste fills. During the process, specific methods and procedures for laboratory testing of backfill material have been formalised. The on-going backfill research on sample scaling is summarised and the future direction of WASMÆs backfill research focus is outlined.

Resource calculations for shear hosted deposits of any type are difficult regardless of which calculation technique is used. One of the main problems is the determination of the geometry of the mineralisation. Once this has been elucidated then the appropriate resource calculation methodology can be employed with a search distance and orientation that is relevant.

Location The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located approximately 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. (Figure 1). Located within the picturesque Darling Ranges, the land was previously used for forestry activities prior to mining commencing in mid-1987. Mineralisation is hosted within deeply weathered felsic and intermediate intrusions and volcanic rocks of the Saddleback Greenstone Belt.

A geostatistical study is made of the drilling results available one stage prior to the present for a tabular deposit. The results show that the blocks required by the mining engineers could have been assessed by the earlier drilling grid with an accuracy significantly better than that obtained by applying conventional methods at the present stage.

Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. Performance trials followed the commissioning of three large mine fans at Mount Isa in 1965. Actual performance characteristics were determined. These were in good agreement with predicted performance.
