A reconstructed landscape may exert long-term influences on its surrounds and behave in ways that may not be predictable given uncertainties regarding climate, soil and vegetation interactions (Evans, 2000). In recent years, computer-based landscape evolution models (LEM) have been used to assess potential and existing mining landscapes and their long-term geomorphic behaviour (Hancock et al, 2007; Hancock, Lowry and Coulthard, 2015; Tucker and Hancock, 2010).In this paper, we focus on the evolution of post-mining landforms, which are designed to include burial or encapsulation of mine-impacted areas and materials, including tailings, drains, spoil tips and other industrial architecture (Figure 1). At the Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia, low-grade uranium ore, tailings, brines and other mine wastes will be buried at depth in the areas of the former pits and tailings storage facilities.The use of LEMs to predict long-term landscape evolution has several issues. These include that model predictions are based on the calibration and parameterisation of the model carried out using values determined from present day, or recent surface conditions. Furthermore, there is also the question as to how subtle perturbations or roughness on the DEM surface can produce alternative model results by randomly varying the elevations of the DEM surface.In this study we examine the effect on sediment transport rates and geomorphology for a proposed rehabilitated landform using multiple landscape realisations with increasing magnitudes of random changes in the DEM using the SIBERIA LEM (Willgoose, Bras and Rodriguez-Iturbe, 1991).CITATION:Hancock, G R, Coulthard, T J and Lowry, J B C, 2016. Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

The Amacan Copper Project was constructed in the Philippines by a Finnish-Filipino Consortium during the years 1979 - 1982. The project involved a turnkey contract for a mine and a concentrator to process 25 000 tonne per day of porphy- ritic copper ore at a grade of 0.45% Cu. The orebody is located on Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, in rugged, mountainous terrain approximately 1 000 m above sea level. The adopted design principle was based on an efficient, straightforward installation utilising a minimum number of items of equipment each with high unit capacities. The consortium faced many problems which resulted in lengthy delays in construction and finally led to the client taking over responsibility for the completion of the project. The concentrator was successfully commissioned in July 1982.

The requirement for economic operation of unit trains carrying bulk materials has dictated that rapid and accurate bulk loading methods be provided. The train loading station at Phosphate Hill, built for Queensland Phosphate Ltd. to load rock phosphate, provides this facility and whilst the concept used is not unique, it contains a number of novel features that are considered to advance the "state of the art'' in this field. This paper briefly reviews some alternative concepts evaluated, and describes the design and operation of the scheme ultimately selected as being most appropriate to the project requirements. it is one which utilises a variable speed belt feeder whose speed is controlled in proportion to the weight rate of material moving on the belt as measured against a set point

The paper introduces a newly developed multi-function test rig for fracture grouting. This test rig has many functions and its performance is consistent. It can control and adjust accurately the opening degree of fissures and static pres- sure; it can measure automatically the quantity of grout injected; it can measure precisely pressure drop of grout in fissures; it can test the results of injection, including effective dispersed distance, anti-filtration capacity of consolidated body, mechanical strength, etc. It can inject a single or two grouts into one or several fissures at a pressure of 16 MPa. Therefore, it is an ideal test rig for fracture injection. The paper depicts all the components of the test rig, its performance and application of the results obtained from fracture grouting tests. Examples are briefly described.

This paper describes a major ventilation study for the expansion of the El Teniente mine operated by Codelco, Chile. El Teniente is one of the world's largest under- ground mines. The design effort was under- taken in three stages and involved a partial mine ventilation survey with network simula- tion, detailed stope ventilation investiga- tions, and design of the entire mine ventila- tion circuit based on production plans to achieve 112,000 tons per day by 1995. The partial ventilation survey provided values of representative friction factors and resistances for typical ventilation raises and airways. These values were used to conduct detailed modeling of the block caving levels to investigate the most cost effective and practical means of providing the required ventilation. The results of these analyses were extrapolated to the proposed expanded mechanized zones.

When Matthew Flinders entered in his log `This land forms the South side of the large bight; and besides projecting beyond the coast line, and being a little higher than usual is remarkable for having some reddish cliffs in it, and deep water near the shore', he was commenting on the deposit of bauxite at a place now known as Weipa. This sighting took place on 9 November 1802, and probably represents the first direct entry in Australia acknowledging a potential mineral deposit. Flinders, of course, had no idea as to what he was looking at, nor did he land to determine its content. If he had, he probably would have had no idea of the substance, and even less knowledge of its use. Nothing further was done to this for about 150 years.

The application of discreet event simulation has matured in modelling manufacturing systems for production analysis. This simulation tool was used in studying a number of mining operations, especially material handling processes. The study of truck-shovel operation including equipment matching, selection, and production estimation utilised the discrete event simulation for providing valuable decision-making information. The sophistication of the available simulation tools grew over times, and simulation driven animation was used to facilitate the validation and visualisation of the simulated system. This form of visualisation enhanced the simulation use greatly. First of all, it provided a communication medium to transfer information to the non-technical managerial personnel as a better decision-making tool. Moreover, the animated visualisation provided a validation tool to check the working of the simulated system and interaction among its components.

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada. The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analyzed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

Fifteen samples 'of clays and shales from the Adelaide area were selected from a total of 84 as representing material of possible value for the manufacture of light-weight aggregate. A detailed examination of the bloating. characteristics of these revealed four likely to be suitable. for expansion.' in a rotary kiln. One of these, a Tapley. Hill shale., was-fired in an 8 in. diameter rotary kiln, but con-tinuous bloating without ring formation in the kiln was not achieved. Steam,,-oxygen,, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide have been, suggested. as the agents of bloating. An examina-tion of .. the evidence : `leads to the conclusion that carbon dioxide derived from. carbonate minerals is likely to be the principal bloating agent. Attempts to bloat clays by the addition of mica were.not successful.

Grinding has been one of the areas of major development at Outokumpu's concentrators. During its early years the company used entirely rod and hall mills, but due to the high costs of metallic grinding it began the testing of autogenous grinding as early as the 1950s. In the late-1970s, the company's own modification for two stage autogenous grinding was ready for industrial use. Surprisingly late, in the 80s - 90s, an interest rose to check also the effects of grinding methods on flotation results. This paper firstly gives a short history of the development work of Outokumpu type autogenous grinding, called 'Outogenius'. The effects of some grinding methods on the process results of two nickel ores are then reviewed. The tests to date show notable effects of grinding methods on flotation.

Bacterial leaching of museum grade chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrates at low sorptive relative humidities (55-91 per cent rH) was demonstrated. Optimum release rates were 13 and 27 mg/gram/100 days copper (Cu++) at 91 per cent and 80 per cent rH and 12 and 33 mg/gram/100 days iron (Fe++) at 80 per cent and 73 per cent rH for concentrate and "pure" chalcopyrite respectively. The optimum copper release rates occurred between 73 per cent - 86 per cent rH and 30-40 mM acid concentrations. Bacterial copper leaching rates were some twenty times slower for emersed copper concentrates, at low relative humidity, compared with submerged cultures. Bacterial copper solubilization was almost quantitatively inhibited above 150 mM acid levels (< pHO.8).

The increasing use of continuous miners in the extraction of high coal seams has amplified the need for enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Owing to larger face dimensions and higher production rates, more ventilating air is required to effectively dilute liberated methane to acceptable concentrations. However, the increased air quantities raise and entrain greater amounts of dust, to which the operator is subjected. Various methods (eg sprayfans, on-board scrubbers and jet fans) are used in various configurations and combinations to ventilate the headings. These arrangements generally result in a complex air flow pattern, which complicates achieving an optimum balance between diluting methane and minimising dust capture. In order to cost effectively investigate and propose solutions to this problem for the South African coal mining industry, the Division of Mining Technology has embarked on an extensive work program to evaluate various ventilation methods presently in use. Four currently generic ventilation patterns in various heading scenarios have been simulated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer program. Evaluating these outputs against a predetermined set of criteria allows the best system for a particular situation to be chosen. The program also facilitates fine-tuning of an adopted system without incurring the cost and inconvenience of doing such tests in situ. This process not only provides solutions at significantly reduced costs, but also yields deeper insights into the factors affecting heading ventilation than hitherto possible.

Water retention, water loss and delay in tailings storage rehabilitation are major challenges for many Coal Mines. Work by Stewart, Backer and Busch in the early 1980s suggested that there were improvements to be made in tailings dewatering and density by the addition of flocculant. This prompted ACARP, in cooperation with Bulga Coal Management (Xstrata), to initiate a research project investigating the impact of flocculant addition on tailings deposition density, water retention and the tendency for tailings to form surface crusts suitable for subsequent rehabilitation. A polyacrylamide-based flocculant (200 - 250 g/tds) was injected into the tailings line immediately prior to disposal into the impoundment area. The flocculated slurry rapidly released clear water and created a beach due to the immediate increase in deposition density. The deposition density increased from 35 per cent w/w to 61 per cent w/w solids within 24 hours and continued to increase to 75 per cent, seven days after treatment. The water capture at the tailings storage facility improved by more than 90 per cent; water which would otherwise be lost from the circuit through retention and evaporation. The impoundment capacity had nearly tripled due to the improvement in initial deposition density from 420 kg/m3 up to 1163 kg/m3. Four weeks after disposal surface crusts were forming on the storage facility, suggesting that there would be less delay between cessation and tailings storage rehabilitation.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. This paper describes laboratory testwork for the beneficiation of a medium grade iron ore, using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Factors leading to the selection of machine type for this method of separation are discussed and the design of the WHIMS section flowsheet of an iron ore beneficiation production plant are described including methods to achieve operational flexibility and adequate protection of the WHIMS separating chamber. The results of the commissioning and operation of the production plant over several years are described, together with experience developed in plant operation. Data on recovery of hematite over the full range of size fractions treated is presented and compared with data in the literature. Potential methods of improving plant performance are discussed. The aim of the research was to investigate the feasibility of using an impedance cell and ratio-transformer bridge to measure solids content in coal slurry pipelines. It appeared that this technique could be developed to measure variations in conductance which correlate with solids content. Successful implementation of the measurement technique would have a variety of applications in existing coal wash plants and the potential for automatic process control. A small pilot plant was designed for a feasibility study. This was a closed loop system in which the coal was uniformly dispersed in a tank with a variable speed agitator and then circulated through an external pipe returning to the top of the tank. The impedance cell was located near the end of the external pipe. Slurry concentrations were varied from clean tap water to 50 per cent solids by weight with the addition of weighed quantities of dry coal dust. Ratio-transformer bridge measurements showed that variations in individual observations were equivalent to measurement errors of about two per cent. These probably reflect variations in concentration of the mixture in the pipe. Data for increments in concentration of one per cent indicate that this is about the limit of resolution of the current system. The paper discusses the principles of operation of the impedance cell and measurement system. Results from the pilot study and proposed improvements in the impedance cell design are examined.

The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.
