Selective leach analytical techniques applied to surface geochemical samples in the search for deeply buried mineral resources gained popularity in the late 1990s. Several commercial assay laboratories introduced their own selective leach methods, adding to the few established commercial methods at that time. Many of these laboratories promoted their methods with orientation data showing favorable responses to both precious and base metal mineralisation, concealed beneath extensive thicknesses of overburden. However, many explorationists remain confused about the utility of these geochemical methods. This confusion is due primarily to the lack of objective orientation surveys over significant mineralisation, comparing all commercially available selective leach methods and to the lack of a creditable theory explaining the formation of these selective leach anomalies. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. An orientation survey was designed to fill the first void û an objective survey over significant mineralisation. With the help of 17 mining companies and assay laboratories, an orientation survey was conducted over five significant covered gold deposits in Nevada, USA , representing over ten million ounces of gold. Hopefully the results of this survey will help provide fuel for those working on the second void û a theory to adequately explain the formation of these selective leach anomalies.

The base metal industry mines and processes hundreds of million tonnes of ore per annum to produce saleable products and large tonnages of waste by-products such as tailings. These ores usually contain less than 1 wt per cent of toxic elements (As, Sb, Bi, Cd, Se, Te, Hg, etc), which are subsequently treated with the other components in the ore during the production of concentrate through to saleable metal products. The deportments of minor elements across the various unit operations of a process flow sheet do not normally receive the attention that the major elements receive. However, these minor elements can have a major influence on the quality of the products as well as an economic and environmental impact. Therefore, a high degree of control over their deportments is a key step in reducing their dispersion in the biosphere. Ongoing work at CSIRO has been examining minor element deportments across unit processes used for smelting and refining and the options for early removal of minor elements, as well as methods for safe disposal of some toxic elements. This paper provides an overview of the R&D activities undertaken at CSIRO to develop tools and methodologies for improved management of minor elements during the processing of sulfide ores.

When a joint venture is established between a major and a minor, the co-venturers often have a number of divergent interests; the major may have put up significantly more capital into the project and will want to protect its investement; the major may have more financial resources and be more readily to commit capital to the project; the major may have more technical resources and expertise to provide to the project; the major may have other competing demands for its capital; the minor may be relying on rapid development of the project as its sole source of cash flow. Successful joint ventures arise when the co-venturers understand each others' interests and attempt to satisfy these interests. This could be achived by having a clear process and timetable for development of the project coupled with clear rules for distribution of income, the commitment of capital to the project and the provision of inter-company services. If divergent interests are either regulated clearly or eliminated, both co-venturers are more likely to seek common objectives in the joint venture with less scope for conflict. This paper, written from the perspective of a major, examines means of establishing successful joint ventures between majors and minors.

At many locations in Australia the decommissioning of mining operations will require the disposal of excess water. If the water is contaminated its disposal may be restricted by government guidelines. The timing of water disposal may be critical to the schedule of close-out. The uncertainty of the annual rainfall input to the water storage and disposal system may determine the success or failure of close-out. The uncertainty associated with any outcome can be used to determine the reliability of the system, or inversely its risk. The technique of Monte Carlo simulation, using the uncertainty in annual rainfall, is applied to quantify the risks associated with water disposal as part of the requirements for close-out in two case studies. In both case studies it is assumed that water disposal is via evaporation only. The first case study is the Nabarlek operation, located about 270 km east of Darwin. This project is required to complete the engineering work associated with its close-out by December 1995. The second study investigates the situation of close-out for the Ranger Uranium Mine, about 250 km east of Darwin. It should be noted that the Ranger mine was examined as part of the annual update of its contingency rehabilitation plan and the probability of implementing the plan is extremely small. The probability of success for the Nabarlek case varied from less than ten per cent to greater than 95 per cent depending on the management strategy. Four possible strategies were investigated for the Ranger mine with the chance of success varying between 20 and 95 per cent. The estimation of the evaporation rate and the area allocated to evaporation was critical in both cases. By applying seasonally based evaporation pan coefficients determined on site, rather than an average monthly value of 0.75, the chance of success was improved by up to 35 per cent for Ranger. Simulation modelling is able to provide information on the likely response of mine water management systems and the level of risk. This information is required to efficiently plan and manage the disposal of water for close-out.

IN any assay office it is of paramount importance to keep the men interested in their work; and in order to do this, men on routine work, such as lead, zinc, and sulphur deterrrrinations, slag analysis, etc, should be changed around monthly. This gives some variety and helps to keep a man's interest on his work, so that better work results. It may be maintained that to keep a man on the same class of work indefinitely makes him more expert at his work. This is certainly true; but in assaying, where accuracy is so essential, it is absolutely necessary for a man to keep his mind on the work, and not 'get' into a mechanical method of working. He is also on the alert to discover means for shortening his analytical methods, and his capacity forwork is increased. Another advantage is that the men get a good all-round training, and one is never at a loss to replace a man on any class of work when he is absent from any cause. This tends to smoother and more efficient running of the assay department. In industrial assaying it is often advantageous to have a result quickly, so that it will be of maximum benefit in the running of some part of the plant, In such a case it pays to sacrifice a little accuracy to speed up a method. The shortest method is less costly, and a quick approximate method is all that is required to give the superintendent the requisite information. Time is thereby saved, and the cost is less. In carrying out assaying for any large industrial plant, such as a smelting works, there is always a tendency for superintendents running the different departments to send in more samples for assay than are absolutely necessary when no system of costing is in operation. Some of these samples may involve a lot of work and heavy expenditure, as, for example, the estimation of only one impurity in a sample of refined lead. Sampling criteria and practical implementation of these criteria are discussed with a view of achieving and maintaining a high level of quality for minerals at their various stages of production through to their utilisation. From this it will be shown the advantages that can be gained by producers who undertake stringent quality control programmes for their ores, thus ensuring they have a competitive edge over other producers.

The occurrence of metallic minerals in Australia to the time of the proclamation of South Australia as a Colony in 1836 was unknown. It is, therefore, perhaps, surprising that British settlers arriving in the Coromandel included among their number a German scientist Johannes Menge who had been appointed by the South Australian Company to the post of Mine and Quarry Agent and Geologist on 1 July 1836. His instructions were to `explore the natural productions of the Colony above and below ground and to superintend the working of quarries of stone and slate, the boring for water, metal, lead, coal and other mines at a salary of ú150 per annum for one year and for as much longer as the Company require your services not however exceeding five years'. In the event, he was to have little influence on those matter.

The CIP process for gold recovery has enjoyed widespread application in most gold-producing countries. The development of a mathematical model of the CIP process has value for use in process design, process optimisation, and process control. Mathematical model development through laboratory experimentation is an important step in the design and optimisation of the CIP process. For this purpose, data has been generated through small scale laboratory leaching and adsorption tests both in batch and continuous mode. This test program has been carried out on specific ores of various types prior to the application of the models to production CIP plants utilising these ores. The applicability of leaching models derived from batch experiments was tested in a continuous five stage CIP pilot plant. The models were then adapted to scale-up the batch to the small scale continuous operation.

Improving the quality of the variogram helps to improve subsequent estimation and simulation processes. Two strategies for conditioning data prior to construction of the variogram are investigated using data from the Luce iron ore deposit in Canada. One strategy is the classic approach in which the deposit is subdivided into a set of structural domains. The domains are analysed individually and datapairs are recombined to produce a variogram. The second strategy is reconstruction of the deposit at an earlier stage of its history through unfolding. This involves transformation of the Cartesian coordinates into stratigraphic coordinate system. Improvement in the variogram quality, expressed in a decreased weighted deviation from a fitted model, is observed for both types of data conditioning. This indicates that, for the Luce deposit, application of data conditioning could also help to inform the selection of sampling locations.

Grade control aims to deliver quality tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. It comprises data collection and interpretation; local reserve estimation; supervision of development and mining; and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of high quality sampling supported by geology. The requirement for quality grade control samples has long been recognised, where they should be representative, unbiased, safe and operationally timely. Underground sampling methods include chip and channel samples; grab samples; and drill-based samples. To achieve quality samples, collection techniques employed should minimise delimitation, extraction and preparation errors. Grade control staff should be well-trained and motivated, and mining staff should understand the need for grade control. This paper reviews grade control sampling methods and presents recommendations for best practice and minimisation of sampling errors.

The technical limits for high-pressure transport of large particle solids by means of sludge pumps, piston pumps or the like lead to the development of the pipe-feeder system. The pipe-feeder is a type of pressure lock in which the high-pressure pump itself is not in contact with the solids. Simultaneous operation of the three chambers with corresponding control of the valves allows continuous flow in both the primary and secondary circuits. Initially the pipe-feeder was used only for the transport of solids. Today it also operates with great success in central mine cooling systems, serving as an alternative for high-pressure/low-pressure heat exchangers or Pelton systems. In addition to the technology applied up to now, the pipe-feeder is also capable of transporting ice slurry, thus increasing cooling output consider- Ably.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake, The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18.6 lb xÇ20 per 100 lb dry coal), additions of 0.045 lb magnesium ion, 0.0026 lb separan A.P. 30, and 0.098 lb aerosol O.T., per 100 lb dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

The procedures for an audit and review process upon which continuous improvement programs may be based are described. The case for regular audits of mining operations to establish performance trends is advanced. Analysis of performance data using the parameters of the capacity equation used in conjunction with learning curves is described. The extrapolation of learning curves in performance target setting, operating and capital cost budgeting is advocated.

The alternate mineral dressing tech-niques for the production of ilmenite roaster feed from heavy mineral concentrate and the reasons for the selection of wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) at Richards Bay Minerals are outlined.Initial flowsheet studies were under-taken using laboratory scale equipment followed by on site pilot testing. Flowsheet development culminated with an extensive test programme conducted at Readings of Lismore in 1975.

An overburden blast utilising horizontal blast holes was successfully attempted at the Ulan Coal Mines during December 1991. The blast reduced operational problems and costs and improved dragline productivity in an area of that contains poorly consolidated sands and clays overlying very hard Permian strata.The fan shaped shot consisted of seven 250 mm diameter holes between 80 and 95 metres long drilled into the highwall face. The holes were loaded with ICI Powergel Gold 25606 bulk Emulsion explosive. The design powder factor was 0.15 kg/bcm for the total shot of 180 000 bcros and 0.44 kg/bcm for the competent Permian strata into which the holes were drilled. Fragmentation from the horizontal blast was comparable to areas conventual blasted. Following the success of this shot further shots are planned for this area.

The integration of iron rejection as hematite with the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process has been investigated on the laboratory scale. The two-stage pressure leach process is applicable for a greenfield zinc plant, or for replacement of the conventional roast-leach circuit in an existing zinc plant. An excess of zinc concentrate is used to accomplish acid neutralisation in the first stage of pressure leaching, and the residual concentrate in the first stage residue is treated with an excess of acid solution in the second stage of pressure leaching to yield high zinc extraction. Integration of hematite precipitation with this process allows for the potential sale of the iron residue, greatly decreasing the residue disposal problem. Two flowsheets containing the desirable features of both of these processes are described in this paper, along with laboratory Results.

Chief Geologist, Groundwater and Engineering Geology Branch South Australian Department of Mines and Energy The six papers submitted for consideration during this session include two dealing with techniques for measing rock mass behaviour, including permeability, in boreholes, one describing the use of surface geophysical methods to delineate pollution plumes in groundwater together with analytical modelling of the plume, and one presenting a biological tracer technique applied to the determination of the origin of water entering underground mine workings. A paper describing dewatering at a base metal mine in Queensland includes an account of the investigation techniques employed to establish a conceptual model as a basis for the evaluation of various dewatering strategies. Of considerable interest is the use of a field gravity survey to delineate a zone of highly weathered rock which forms the major aquifer at the site.

In line with the recommendations of The AusIMM/AMIC Joint Committee Report in 1981 Isa Mine ore reserves are quoted in proven and probable categories (recoverable ore reserves). Internal reporting considers geological mining and extraction reserves in terms of proven and probable categories. Proven reserves are subdivided into detailed and confirmed ore. External reporting includes a possible ore category (not a reserve). The basis for these divisions is the spatial distribution of sampling data. Proven ore is defined by data 80m apart or less and probable ore by data 80m to 150m apart. Within the proven ore category detailed ore is defined by data 40m apart or less and confirmed ore by data 40m to 80m apart. Kriging is used to provide tonnage and grade information for the currently producing 1100 and 1900 orebodies. Kriged cross sections are initially produced to coincide with existing geological sections and are used for stope design. Stope ore reserves calculations are ideally performed at three discrete design stages, which in order of increasing accuracy are: preliminary design (PD), final design (FD) and ring design (RD). At each of these stages Kriged meshes incorporating the most recent sampling information are produced for reserve calculations. Historically derived mining and extraction factors are applied both to global reserves and individual stope reserves to reflect changes in geological and mining conditions as well as the sequencing of extraction. These factorised reserves are then inserted into the computerised reserves inventory system (RIN). Monitoring of individual stope performance continues into the production stage with input from planning, research, survey and production personnel. This allows actual extraction factors to be derived for comparison with predicted factors, providing some measure of stope performance.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. The number of employees required to operate a continuous operation was determined. The fixed and variable costs of the operation were separated, generally along the lines of labour and stores components. Proprietary `MicroPlanner' scheduling software was used to assess resource utilisation under the constraints generated by seven-day operation to determine the level of resources required and ensure that the maximum use was being made of all resources. The mine economic model was used to account for both the fixed and variable costs of the various task to determine the cost and net revenue of the various scenarios. The analysis indicated that mine output could be increased while reducing the unit production cost. Several eight- and 12-hour, seven-day rosters were sourced and ranked for their potential to improve production and communication, and for their effect on employee health and lifestyle.
