Multiple regression analysis applied to ventilation records of stopes on the Witwatersrand showed that it was possible to estimate the temperature increase per 100 ft for a new stope with a standard deviation of 0' 5°F. The analysis also threw light on the relative effect on this estimate of five different factors.Application of the analysis of variance technique to a factorialexperiment on the production of dust during rock drilling showed that the effects of air and water pressure were quite small but also showed that the between-machine variation was unexpectedly large.Analysis of variance also proved a valuable means for assessing the bias and random error variation of aneroid barometers used in pressure surveys.INTRODUCTIONThree examples are discussed to illustrate the use of the techniques of "analysis of variance" and "multiple regression" in research on the ventilation of gold mines. Although the techniques are basically similar their application to each example has a slightly different emphasis and the examples were chosen for this reason. The variation ofemphasis is as follows.1. Temperature increases in stapes. This work was undertaken as a preliminary to possible extensive controlled experimentation (Lambrechts, 1959). Data collected in routine work by the mine ventilation personnel were used for analysis and no specific experiments were carried out. The main object was to see whether such data could provide any strong pointers to factors which might be worthy ofmore careful study and to factors which could initially be ignored. Of course, there was hope that the study might provide an empirical formula for rough forecasts.

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

The thermal conductivity of mold flux is crucial for optimising the productivity and quality of steels. This study investigates the thermal conductivity of molten oxides, including CaO-BO1.5-AlO1.5 (CBA), CaO-BO1.5-AlO1.5-SiO2 (CBAS), and CaO-MgO-BO1.5-AlO1.5 (CMBA) melts, using a hot wire method. Additionally, their structure is examined using Raman spectrometry and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) to explore their relationship. Furthermore, first-principles calculations are employed to assess the covalency of each bond in the melts for a more quantitative analysis of their relationship. The study confirms that an increase in the CaO concentration of the CaO-BO1.5-AlO1.5 melts reduces the amount of bridging oxygen and consequently decreases thermal conductivity. The covalency of the B[4]-O bond is highest, especially when the second-nearestneighbour Al atoms transition from Al[6] to Al[4], forming the AlB3O7 structure with B[4]. The relationship between thermal conductivity and the structure of CaO-BO1.5-AlO1.5-SiO2 melts can be quantitatively assessed using the degree of polymerisation of the network structure and the variation of covalency as indicators. Furthermore, replacing CaO with MgO in the CaO-MgO-BO1.5-AlO1.5 melts reveals a mixed alkaline earth effect on thermal conductivity.

The Charters Towers goldfield is located in the centre of a Lower to Mid-Palaeozoic igneous complex where schistose, amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks were intruded by multiple phases of medium grained granodioritic rocks. Several generations of mafic and felsic dykes also occur. Two distinct mylonites cut all but the youngest granitoids. Gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins located in brittley reactivated mylonite and in sympathetic fissures in the undeformed granitoids. The gold-quartz veins occur in complex, gouge-filled, 2.5m thick zones, with minor sulfides, surrounded by zoned phyllic and propylitic alteration assemblages. Four main vein systems are each restricted to separate granitoids or contain oreshoots near granitoid contacts. No genetic relationship between the granitoids and the vein systems can be documented. The early mylonitic fabrics and the granitoid contacts played an important role in ground preparation and in the localization of oreshoots. Non mylonitized granitoids also served as favourable hosts for many of the lodes. Whole rock values of 180 of the granitoids range between 6.5 and 7.9 per mil. Hydrothermal vein quartzes have 180 values between 12.2 and 15.7 per mil. Mylonite quartzes have values of 8.4 per mil. Variation in 180 values of quartzes is in part related to granitoid host rock type.

An important rutile-ilmenite-zircon bearing sand deposit was discovered by local farmers at Eneabba, 300 km by road north of Perth in 1970. These heavy minerals occur in a series of ancient strandlines and associated dunal deposits at elevations from 85 m to 170 m above the present sea level and are situated,30 km inland. The strandlines were deposited on wave- cut platforms in an ancient bay bounded by Mesozoic sediments during a series of regress- ions from a high sea level, probably during late Tertiary or early Pleistocene times. The immediate source of the heavy minerals in the Eneabba deposit is a widespread low content of those minerals in the nearby Mesozoic sedi- ments. The high-grade southern portion of the Eneabba deposit has been closely drilled and is now being prepared for production by Allied Eneabba.Pty. Ltd., a subsidiary of Allied Minerals N.L. This part of the deposit is 11 km long and up to 2.5 km wide. It is characterised by little or no overburden and the average depth of mineralisation, bounded by a 2.5 per cent heavy mineral cut-off, is 12 m. The water-laid strandline deposits at the base of the mineralisation are generally high grade, ranging from 20 to 60 per cent

Carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite yields a magnesium bicarbonate leachate with a substantial soluble iron concentration. The iron concentration depends upon the leaching conditions (particularly time, temperature and pulp density) but is generally in the range 0.005-0.5 g/litre. If this soluble iron is not removed prior to the precipitation of the magnesium as a hydrated carbonate, then this product will be contaminated by the iron, and will not yield a final product (high-purity magnesia) that meets specifications.The soluble iron content of the magnesium bicarbonate leachate can be reduced to an acceptable level by addition of solid aluminium sulphate either during carbonic acid, leaching of the crude calcine or to the clarified leachate. Chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction revealed that the iron is precipitated as an iron-containing hydrotalcite-type compound, [Mg6(Al,Fe)2(OH)16]CO3.4H2O. The actual composition of the precipitate depends on the amount of aluminium sulphate added and the precipitation technique used. Because precipitation of iron in this manner also results in reduced magnesium recovery from the leachates, It WIll be necessary to develop methods for recovering the magnesium component of the precipitates.

Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

Gravity Leaching of high-grade gravity gold concentrates, such as Knelson Concentrates, with the ACACIA Reactor represents a new generation of concentrate treatment methods. The ACACIA Reactor is a complete packaged plant for the maximising of gold recoveries from gravity gold concentrates. This paper will introduce the process technology and provide process results from the Porgera ACACIA Reactor installation. The advantages of the ACACIA Reactor are many, and justification for installation has been varied. The typical advantages of the process include: increased recovery of gold from the Knelson Concentrate; no return of high-grade table tails, often grading several thousand g/t, into the mill circuit; reduction in tails grades of slow leaching gold; reduction in the requirement for operating staff by the removal of the manual tabling process and replacing with a fully automated treatment system; improved security by removing the tabling step where operating staff come into direct contact with visible gold; improved health and safety, by the removal of the treatment steps for the table concentrate, which often include operators handling corrosive chemicals and the production of sulphur and arsenic compound fumes; and improved metallurgical accounting, by allowing daily head grade calculations. The ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production for over two years, and has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, there are now four full installations of the processing plant, including Anglogold Union ReefÆs, Anglogold Sunrise Dam, PACMIN Carosue Dam and Porgera Joint Venture.

Geological heterogeneity is one dimension of complexity in mining. Significant effort is put into developing an understanding of this complexity so it can be used in resource estimation, mine planning and economic modelling. However, over the decadal lifespan of a mining venture, many other dimensions add to the complexity of a mining operation. These include: technological evolution, market fluctuations; investor confidence; social norms; local expectations; and ecosystem functionality. As with geology, these factors are all heterogeneous, uncertain, time varying and represented through sparse and incomplete datasets. Recent work (Valenta et al) is beginning to show us how these risks correlate in different global settings. By analysing data relating to known, but as yet undeveloped copper deposits, this work (the complex ore body database) is demonstrating that it is the combination of issues (both price sensitive and non price-sensitive) that determine the viability of a deposit for extraction in the 21st century.CITATION: Littleboy, A, Plint, N and Valenta, R, 2018. The Suurikuusikko gold deposit was discovered in 1987 in western Finnish Lapland, 54 km NNE from the town centre of KittilS in the volcanic belt of Central Lapland. It is hosted by tholeiitic basalts in a graphite-bearing albitite breccia. The ore is located in subvertical shear zones characterised by strong albitisation, carbonatisation and sulfidisation. The ore minerals consist of arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bournonite and rutile. Small amounts of pyrrhotite, gersdorffite, jamesonite, bornite, gudmundite, tetrahedrite, stibnite, kermesite, berthierite and native Sb are also present. Gold occurs as invisible and as 1 - 2 ¦m size inclusions in arsenopyrite and pyrite, on their grain boundaries and in fractures. The average amount of gold leached by cyanide is 2.93 per cent. The æinvisibleÆ gold contents were studied in pyrite and arsenopyrite by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) at CANMET/ MTL. Gold element distribution images show zoned patterns both in pyrite and arsenopyrite. SIMS analyses range from 343 to 55 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 217 ppm down to 0.32 ppm (detection limit 478 ppb) Au in pyrite. EPMA results range from 939 to below the detection limit 24 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 267 ppm to below 22 ppm Au in pyrite. Recovery of the refractory gold ore was studied using grinding, flotation, bio-oxidation and cyanidation tests. A sulfide bulk concentrate containing 40 ppm Au was obtained by flotation at 90 per cent recovery (As content 5.5 per cent, S content 22 per cent, and mass recovery 15 per cent). The grinding fineness in flotation was P80 -100 to 120 ¦m. At the original fineness the cyanidation recovery from the concentrate was lower than ten per cent, after ultra-fine grinding P80 -10 to 2 ¦m the Au recovery was less than 17 per cent. After bio- oxidation, Au recovery of 95 per cent was obtained in carbon-in-leach (CIL). The bio-oxidation time was two weeks in laboratory test, but after regrinding the oxidation rate was faster and recovery of Au higher. However, the selected method for the mining to be started in summer 2008 is open pit mining and mineral processing methods sulfide flotation and pressure oxidation in an autoclave. The ore reserves were estimated 31 December 2007 as: Probable 18.2 Mt with 5.1 g/t Au, Indicated 5.4 Mt with 3.0 g/t Au and Inferred 10.8 Mt with 3.4 g/t Au. The production capacity will be 3000 t/day.

During its 28-year life the MHD ISP smelter has gone through two phases, each of about a dozen years. The first phase was a learning one; in the second phase the lessons were applied and throughput and production rose strongly. Early experience revealed the robustness and the flexibility of the Imperial Smelting Process. The experience was demonstrated by strong increases in the throughput of mixed lead-zinc concentrates and of secondary (oxide) zinc materials. Purchased material quantities rose from 175 000 tonnes/year to 200 000. The required capacity increase of the IS furnace to smelt the higher throughput was achieved by relatively minor modifications; for instance a change to the internal furnace profile gained an extra two square metres in cross sectional area. The furnace hearth area has remained practically unchanged over its entire history. The paper concludes that there is still more potential to be drawn from the process and MHD intends to sustain raw material input at a new level of 240 000 tonnes/year. However, this rate will have to be achieved under the imposition of more stringent environmental and product quality standards than ever before.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development, engineering and construction of a process plant for the biological oxidative pre-treatment of a refractory pyrite-arsenopyrite gold ore flotation concentrate. Prefeasibility and feasibility study resource modeling, metallurgical testwork, and environmental and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered for oxidation of the ore, which examine cost, risk, operability, recovery, engineering and environmental aspects are compared, with particular reference to pressure and biological oxidation. The BIOX« biological oxidation process was selected as the preferred oxidation process and the flow sheet for this process is presented. Selection of the BOIX« process resulted in special requirements for the feed preparation circuit, residue treatment and disposal, materials of construction and engineering. Use of a biological process in ore treatment also introduces particular process and engineering risks the management of which are discussed.

During recent years many investigators have suggested large spacing to burden ratios to improve the fragmentation obtained in blasting. In spite of these suggestions, most operators still use a conventional ratio of 1 to 2. From single hole longitudinal charge tests in laboratory, it is shown that burden controls the fragmentation. The burden for obtaining uniform fragmentation is smaller than the burden to obtain maximum breakage. Tests on two or three holes show that a larger spacing to burden ratio can be used for smaller burdens, but it is not possible for the larger burdens chosen to obtain maximum breakage. By using finite element analysis evidence is presented to show the effect of spacing and burden relationship on blasting results.

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The potential synergy between chemometrics and TOS is far from exhausted at this time; much work remains.CITATION:Esbensen, K H, 2014. A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.

This paper describes the design of the marine riser structures, including the design measures for sealing and protection from flooding, dewatering and connection to the main tunnels, for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. The risers connect the intake and discharge tunnels to the ocean. Construction commenced on both in April 2007. The paper describes the key design criteria for the risers, the construction constraints that influenced the design and the design of the main elements of the risers and the connections to the tunnels.

Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.
