Problems of the creation of an automated cartographic system for environmental condition estimation and forecasting in mining region are discussed in this paper. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO is offered as the platform for such a system. A breadboard model of the system was tested on the example of Kemerovo province (Kuznetsk coal basin), the most ecologically impacted mining region of Russia. As a result parameters of territorial distribution of integrated adverse environmental impact of the industrial enterprises are reviewed. Administrative regions of Kemerovo province were rated according to a degree of environmental pollution. Further, specific weight of various industries in pollution of region is determined.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

China has large amounts of iron ore reserves, but iron ore in China, with low-grade, small disseminated particles and many other associated minerals, is difficult to dress. In recent years, with the fast development of China's steel industry, the demand for iron ore has increased markedly. The new technologies in iron ore dressing in China are very effective in processing haematite and other difficult to dress iron ores. The iron ore grade and recovery rate has been improved. This result alleviates the difficulty in iron ore supply in China.

The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

Increasing attention is being focussed worldwide on the strategic environmental assessment of mining projects, including consideration of cumulative environmental effects. In New Zealand there is now an end in sight for inappropriate delays in resource consent approval of responsible mining projects. This paper investigates six case examples of recently consented mining and quarrying projects, whose applications were notified. It also explores the nature of delays that occurred, the factors that contributed to the delays, and whether the consent process delivered fair and effective public participation and desirable environmental outcomes.

Limited recourse financing techniques reduce the financial exposure of equity holders to major mining projects by transfering some of the risks to the banks which provide loan funds for project development. This can only be achieved by a clear understanding of the principles involved. Engineering and management decisions on how the resource is to be developed and extracted must be made in the light of lender's requirements. The structure of sales contracts, joint venture agreements and many other documents can be important in limited recourse financing. If projections show that the debt can be repaid from project cash flow, loan agreements and other arrangements can restrict lenders ability to look to the equity holders for repayment of project loans.

The paper reviews the majority of associations and institutions which operate in support of the Australian mineral industry. The review covers historical aspects of each organisation and the current activities and management structure. The linkages between the organisations through membership are briefly discussed. The paper comments on the evolution of the formation of the organi- sations and the networks between them that do exist and operate regu- larly. Rationalisation or a process to consider formation of new groups to fill gaps in the network are recommended for further research.

The Carnilya Hill Mine, a joint venture project between Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) and The Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP), is a nickel sulphide deposit being developed by the Kambalda Nickel Operations (KNO) of Western Mining Corporation. Seven months elapsed from the time a decision to proceed with the project was taken until the first ore production. During the first month of operation a new KNO record for decline development was set. Equipment used includes an electro- hydraulic drill jumbo, 4 cubic metre front end loaders, and 35 tonne haulage trucks.

Zinc cementation and carbon adsorption are both presently used for precious metals recovery from cyanide leach solutions. Each of these techniques exhibits unique processing features which renders them suitable to treat solutions with different properties and in different applications. In this study, the two processes are reviewed and compared. Operating data from a number of Merrill-Crowe precipitation and carbon adsorption plants in North America have been obtained and used in this analysis. The relative capital and operating costs for the two processes have also been considered.

Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

The current practice of magnetite ore agglomeration involves high temperature oxidation roasting (typically at 1200–1350°C) of magnetite to hematite phase in order to improve the strength and reducibility of pellets. The requirement to pre-oxidise the magnetite before introduction to an ironmaking plant increases the CO2 emissions generated during the ironmaking process. In our previous papers, a novel, alternative agglomeration route for magnetite ores was presented where magnetite was converted to a reducible CaFe3O5 (CWF) phase through the addition of lime to produce a Lime-Magnetite Pellet (LMP) feedstock that can be directly charged to ironmaking units. The LMP process eliminates the magnetite oxidation stage, thereby reducing the CO2 emission during ironmaking. The concept was tested by thermodynamic calculations, high temperature experiments and scaled-down pilot scale test work. In this paper, larger scale synthesis of halfstoichiometric LMPs (1 mole of Fe3O4 and ½ mole of CaCO3) were prepared using a balling drum, followed by overnight drying at 110°C and induration at 1050°C for two hours. The LMPs were analysed using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope techniques for phase and microstructure characterisation. The LMPs were found to have 14–15 wt. per cent of CWF phase when indurated under a CO2/CO ratio of 8.5:1. Pilot scale testing of the LMPs was conducted following ISO standard test procedures. The test results indicated the LMP’s had a Reducibility Index (RI) of over 91 per cent, a Tumbler Index (TI) of 87 per cent and a Reduction Degradation Index (RDI) of 4.6 per cent. The results indicate LMPs may be useful as an alternative feedstock to ironmaking processes that would result in lower overall CO2 emissions.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. Recent field experiments in the United Kingdom (Buchanan, 1979) have shown that the in-seam technique is capable of detecting a 1m fault in a 3m seam, at a range of 280m and with a resolution of ¦40m. Comparable tests in Australian collieries are proceeding. Although the practicality of an implementation of the technique on a routine basis remains to be demonstrated, the potential of the technique for the prediction of outbursts clearly warrants detailed examination. This potential will,depend, inter alia, on the level and scale of variations in elastic (and anelastic) properties of bodies of coal undergoing stresses associated with mining. Available data, mainly from studies of the seismic properties of gas saturated reservoir rocks, confirm the intuitive view that stress increases give rise to increases in seismic wave velocity and decreases in wave attenuation, markedly at low stresses (as pore spaces close with little resistance) but less so as stress increases. Such increases are of the same order as aniso- tropic effects, but should provide impedance contrast sufficient for detection by in-seam seismic methods. The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. In 1991, two autogenous grinding mills were installed replacing two stages of crushing, one stage of rod milling and one stage of primary ball milling. The cyclone overflow P80 of the secondary ball milling circuit was reduced to 120 microns due to the increased operating power in the AG/SAG mill circuits. A study of the mineralogy of the milled products and the plant flotation recovery indicated that the installed secondary grinding energy was more than what was required for adequate liberation of the chalcopyrite and half of it had potential for more effective use elsewhere. Halving the secondary grinding energy meant only one of the two secondary ball mills would be needed. The predicted saving in operating cost of one less ball mill was more than two million dollars per annum. With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. Mining of sulfide-based ore deposits typically creates a potential for release sulfate and acid to groundwater, and many operating mines are thus predicted to require long-term post-closure treatment of groundwater. Toward the goal of selecting an optimal treatment, this paper compares costs of four demonstrated technologies for long-term treatment of sulfate-contaminated groundwater: in situ biological reduction (ISR), in situ permeable reactive barrier (PRB) composed of compost and zero-valent iron (ZVI), and two ex situ æpump-and-treatÆ technologies ù ex situ biological reduction, and ex situ nanofiltration with lime precipitation. Costs for each technology are estimated for treatment of a model aquifer system containing sulfate-contaminated groundwater, with the goal of treating 1 m3/min of groundwater from 1500 mg/L sulfate to a target level of 500 mg/L. (Metal removal is typically achieved by these technologies, and thus excluded from this analysis.) Costs are estimated for each technology as a function of treatment duration (ten to 60 years) and, for PRB and ISR, required replacement frequency (ten to 60 years). Estimated costs include capital and operation and maintenance, using a seven per cent net discount rate. Results indicate that ex situ technologies (biological reduction and nanofiltration with lime precipitation) are the most expensive. In situ technologies may be much less expensive, with PRBs having by far the lowest potential cost, followed by ISR as the next least expensive. However, actual costs for the in situ technologies are very sensitive to poorly constrained parameters, particularly the ZVI content of the PRB, and the effective life of PRB and ISR systems. This large cost uncertainty supports delaying remedial actions where viable, and suggests that feasibility analyses are generally warranted for specific applications to focus on these sources of uncertainty.

During the last decade, it has been established that conventional mineral-processing control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in plant throughput and operating-cost saving. The proper education and training of personnel using dynamic simulators of the principal unit operations is vital for proper design and maintenance of control systems. Severe multivariable interactions and numerous constraints on both manipulated and state variables in grinding/classifica-tion and flotation systems can be studied using time domain analysis with proper dynamic simulators. Two interactive programs are described, and the basis of each simulator and its structure are discussed. Two examples concerned with choosing, tuning, and decoupl-ing of manipulated and controlled variables for a grinding/classification circuit (DYNA-MILL II) and for a rougher flotation circuit (DYNAFLOAT II) are presented. The way in which these dynamic simulators can be used for the design of model-based control strate-gies is also outlined. A brief description of the use of these dynamic simulators for screening alternative strategies and circuit optimization is given.

Modern technology and the need for published results have created the tendency for exploration to concentrate on drilling and assaying rather than building a broader geological understanding. Though grade is vitally important to a resource estimate, density and volume are also very important aspects that require equal consideration. Wet tropical nickel laterites are developed in humid environments over ultramafic bedrock where the nickel and cobalt are enriched to economic levels by weathering, leaching and supergene processes. These laterites often occur over rugged terrain at higher elevations where there is sufficient rain and stability for the long lateritisation process to occur. For nickel laterite profiles, the variable terrain and significant material type changes within the relatively thin profile make density and particularly volume estimation, just as significant as grade in resource estimation and assessment of resource risk. Drilling alone is generally not a cost-effective way to reduce the risk in laterite volume estimation to acceptable levels. Surface geological mapping, high resolution topographic data and other information such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used very effectively to improve volume estimates. These data types are all differently structured, have different data density and quality and may potentially overlap. Integration of these disparate data types provide the most cost-effective approach to modelling wet tropical nickel laterite volumes and minimising risk. Contractors are used extensively in the development of underground mines in Australia. Often problems arise, some originating as far back as the feasibility stage of projects, through inexperience, lack of preparation and inflexibility by both parties.Guidelines are put forward for both principals and contractors which are seen as necessary to ensure that disputation is avoided and the full benefits of the use of contractors are obtained.
