The Mount Isa mine in North West Queens- land produces a total of nearly 10 million t/yr from separate copper and silver lead zinc orebodies. Sampling information is mainly obtained from diamond drilling on 30 to 40 metre centers in both types of orebodies. For the copper orebodies the majority of the core is analysed for copper content using a non-destructive bulk analyser developed by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. The diamond drill core in the silver lead zinc orebodies is usually sam- pled as sawn half core and assayed in the com- pany laboratory using a variety of methods dependent upon the level of metal content and/or the elements required. Underground development is sampled where additional information is required to improve the ore reserve estimate. The copper areas are sampled using a standard 2.0 m by 2.0 m chip sample of the wall. The chips are taken on a 250 mm spacing. Lead areas are sampled using a 100 mm wide by 4 mm deep channel over intervals determined by the area geologists. The massive, irregularly shaped copper ore bodies are mined as large sublevel open stopes and pillars. Ore reserve estimation on both a production unit and global scale is routinely carried out using a geostatistical system developed in-house and running on a Sperry 1100 mainframe computer. Copper grade, tonnes and the Kriging var- iance are estimated at points on a user defined grid. The Kriging program uses 10 m assay composites from diamond drill core and underground chip samples. One average (rela- tive) variogram is used throughout the main copper orebodies. The validity of using an average variogram was verified by the original geostatistical study undertaken in the late 1970's.

Data Metallogenica (DM) is unique as a global mineral sample collection and deposit database with over 70 000 rock samples and a wide range of descriptive, photographic and measurement data. Subscribers have access to approximately four gigabytes of on-line data with many examples included on the public pages. DM commenced its life on the Pacific rim in 1971 and much recent growth has focused on countries of the Pacific margin, particularly Australia, Fiji, Chile, Indonesia and Peru. Approximately 600 separate deposits and mineral occurrences in this region are represented in DM. The sets of rock samples have been photographed at high resolution and included on the web site, together with unpublished descriptions, deposit cross-sections, bibliographies, field and mine photographs, petrology and reflectance mineralogy. Figures and abstracts from PhD theses are a new addition and the donation of proprietary databases by companies and individuals is an encouraging trend. DM increasingly is being viewed as an acceptable and important repository for æfragileÆ and irreplaceable personal and company data, it is also being recognised in its true light as a high level information system, not solely a collection of rock samples. Data Metallogenica is a not-for-profit venture of AMIRA International that requires self-funding from December 2004. Growth and development must be funded entirely out of subscription and sponsorship revenues because no government subsidy is provided. The Pacific rim is in the mainstream of mining and exploration activities worldwide and those involved have much to gain from a dynamically sustaining DM. The prediction of sintering performance of iron ore fines and the possibility of targeted optimisation of specific sinter properties are very important for both the iron ore industry and related research organisations. Physical pilot-scale sinter runs require large amounts of raw materials and are expensive, so it is critical to target large test work programs with many different sintering parameters effectively. To predict values for sintering performance parameters such as tumble index (TI), low temperature reduction disintegration index (RDI) and productivity, a comprehensive database of pilot-scale sintering experimental results has been established and empirical modeling conducted. Similarly to earlier work, physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the iron ores have been considered. However, in contrast to the previous work where only one textural parameter was taken into account, namely the proportion of dense haematite ore texture, the current model includes the abundances of several different textures which were combined into different textural factors corresponding to different sinter properties. Coefficients for the variables within specific regression equations can provide a better understanding of the effect of the variables on the corresponding sintering performance. The modelling results have also been used for predicting the sintering performance of mixtures that were not part of the database used for establishing the models. Comparison of experimental and modeling results for the verification test data is also reported in this paper.

There are presently no suitable underground mine production scheduling optimisation models available for application to sublevel stope mining. Scheduling underground production for maximum return is therefore still a manual process, which generally involves scheduling production from the next available highest cash flow stope within the operational constraints of the project. In most mining operations, the scheduling problem is too large and complex to guarantee truly optimal results through manual scheduling. This paper reviews some general optimisation studies that have been proposed for underground hard rock mining. Furthermore, an example of a mixed integer programming model is presented for a small conceptual sublevel stoping operation. Comparative results of a schedule generated by a mixed integer programming (MIP) production scheduling model and a manually generated model on a nine stope example is presented. Results indicate that the potential benefits of the MIP production scheduling model for the purpose of maximising NPV are significant. Finally, a new constraint was formulated to limit multiple exposures of fill masses for use in an existing MIP production scheduling model. Testing of the formulation took place on the central stope of the nine stope example, which showed that the formulation performed its task without breaking other operational constraints.

The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.

The largest oil sand deposit in the world is located in Alberta, Canada, with a total proven reserve of 2.5 trillion barrels of oil. The water based extraction process is currently being used in commercial operations to recover bitumen by flotation from oil sand ores. A recognised challenge in bitumen extraction is the reduced bitumen recovery when processing ores containing high fines content or æweatheredÆ oil sand ores, collectively known as poor processing ores. Inspired by demonstrated success of using kerosene as collectors in coal flotation, an innovative idea of using oily bubbles (air bubbles coated with a thin layer of oil or solvent) was tested to improve bitumen flotation recovery from poor processing ores. In this study, dynamic contact angle of air bubbles or oily bubbles on bitumen and induction time of bitumen-oily bubble attachment in water were measured to justify the use of oily bubbles in bitumen recovery from poor processing ores. The type of oil or solvents, including kerosene, toluene and naphtha, used in generating oily bubbles showed a marginal effect on the contact angle values, similar to the values measured with air bubbles. However, the spreading of an air bubble was found to be much slower than that of oily bubbles on a bitumen surface. The induction time for oily bubble-bitumen attachment was found to be much shorter than that for corresponding air bubble-bitumen attachment in the process water from poor processing ores. The reduced induction time for kerosene-coated air bubble-bitumen attachment correlates well with the improved bitumen recovery from poor processing ores using kerosene-coated oily bubble flotation technology.

"Phytostabilisation with tolerant plant species has been advocated as a cost-effective solution for sustainable cover of tailings from metal mines and bauxite refinery. The development of sustainable plant ecosystems on such wastes requires not only tolerant plant species compatible with local climatic conditions, but also the formation of stable and functional root zones through systematic processes to develop functional soil matrix and horizons (eg A-B-C). However, the process requirements for reconstructing functional root zones in tailings are poorly understood. Based on a review of current literature and industry experience in tailings revegetation, the present paper conceptualises three key phases in the process of root zone development in amended tailings: hydro-geochemical stabilisation resulting from the interactions among tailings characteristics, amendment measures and local climatic conditions the rehabilitation of soil biological capacity the establishment of ecological (carbon and nutrient) linkages between the rehabilitated root zones and the above ground plant communities.Key research is required on: the relationship between hydro-geochemical stability and mineralogy and geochemistry of tailings, in response to rehabilitation treatments under local climatic conditions the relationship between soil biological capacity and hydro-geochemical stability in the root zone the transition of soil microbial communities specific to exogenous organic matters into those required for mineralising litters of in situ plant communities.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Edraki, M and Mulligan, D R, 2012. This paper describes the autogenous carrier flotation of 0 - 20 ¦m ilmenite using 40 -- 80 }tm ilmenite as carrier. Investigation is made of the influence of main technological parameters on autogenous carrier flotation. The mechanism of autogenous carrier flotation is discussed using extended DLVO theory. The main conclusions are as follows: 1. the smaller the fine particles the more easily they adhere.to carriers; 2. the selectivity of autogenous carrier flotation depends on the selectivity of adsorption of collector. In the autogenous carrier flotation of ilmenite/plagioclase mixture assaying 15.35 per cent TiO2, a concentrate containing 47.17 per cent Ti02 can be obtained by primary separation with a recovery of 93.05 per cent. The Quiruvilca district, located 80 km east of Trujillo in north central Peru (Fig. 1), has produced over eight million tons of Cu-Pb- Zn-Ag ore from approximately 60 veins since 1789. "Quiruvilca means "sacred tooth" in Quechua, the lingua franca of the Incas. The expression refers to a prominent volcanic neck exposed several kilometers northeast of the district. The district covers an area of approx- imately 24 km2. The mines occupy the eastern quarter; workings underlie 6.7 km2 with a developed vertical range of 280 m. All pres- ently operating workings are owned by Corpora- cion Minera Nor Peru S.A., a subsidiary of ASARCO Incorporated. The oldest rocks in the area are Lower Cretaceous clastic sedimentary rocks exposed 7 km to the east. Lithologies include sand- stone, siltstone, shale, coal seams, and carbonates (Cossio, 1964). These rocks were folded and affected by regional low-grade metamorphism during the early Tertiary, 40-65 m.y. (Hollister, 1977).

Surface and near surface particulate gold occurs sporadically over an area of some60 km2 between Vunda and Navilawa on the west coast of Viti Levu, Fiji.Background grades of 0.01 ppm can be found in the zone of weathering from 3 to ZQm but, at Vunda, attain significance within certain "localities" ranging from 1000 m2 to 35000 m2 in area. Intense and deep weathering renders geological interpretation difficult but the higher grades seem to relate to equally weathered dykes and apophyses which intrude the tuffaceous country rock.Both country rock (5.4 m.y.) and intru-sives (4.8 m.y.) are of shoshonitic composi-tion and all rocks are consanguineous. At Navilawa, on the eastern end of the zone, basic monzonite crops out as a sizeable stock carrying low grade porphyry-type copper and gold. Between Navilawa and Vunda intrusives are as large apophyses and dyke swarms, and at Vunda, on the western end, only the upper ends of dykes and small apophyses are exposed carry-ing various sulphides, magnetite and rutilein hair line fractures. The Split Rock low grade copper prospect was discovered in 1969 by Cyprus Mines Corporation using stream geochemistry. Cyprus "Imes carried out geochemical and geophysical investigations, geological mapping, and percussion and diamond drilling, and concluded that the grade of mineralisation was too low (0.1% copper) to be of interest. In the present study, the geology was remapped and very substantial differences from the previous observations are recorded. (lineraliced acid dykes in a 1 000 foot hole drilled by Cyprus Mines had a total inter- section of almost 300 feet with an average crade of 0.4% copper. Surrounding drill holes at distances of 500 feet did not intersect +hese dykes. This group of drill holes occupies a small part of an area about 2 km by 1 km which was affected by intense quartz sericite pyrite alteration along many fractures with an associated soil copper anomaly. It may be that the quartz sericite alteraiion with feeble copper mineralisation represents hydrothermal alteration emanating `rom a mineralised intrusion of which the dykes mentioned above are off shoots.

The behaviour of cationic and anionic collector mixtures in the feldspar-quartz flotation system has been investigated througl conductivity, surface tension, zeta-potential and flotation studies. Tht results show the formation of molecular complexes between oppositel; charged collector ions through charge neutralisation. From August 1962 to June 1976 Peko Mines Ltd. produced Gold Bullion at the Peko Control Mill using 18x24 Denver Mineral Jigs and strake tables. Gold ores treated during this period were obtained from Orlando, Juno and Ivanhoe Mines and from the Warrego Mine after 1974, all in the Tennant Creek Area of the Northern Territory. With the downturn in copper prices Warrego Copper ore mining ceased and the copper Smelter closed down in February 1974, Warrego gold ore continued to be treated in the Peko Concentrator.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

Hazard analysis utilizes interaction mecha- nisms in combination with geologic, structural and mining conditions to delineate areas of potential damage in seams subject to interaction. Using characterizations of conditions peculiar to multi- seam mining, such as innerburden thickness, geol- ogy and structures, initial interaction contour maps can be constructed. Geologic hazard analysis is then carried out on roof, pillar and floor condi- tions in the affected seam using lower seam rock properties and layout geometries in the overlying seam. Either safety factors or damage ratings can then be developed representing degree of hazard in the lower seam. The final hazard map shows both the aerial extent and magnitude of potential dam- age from interaction.

More than 200 bursts in coal occurred at Leichhardt Colliery prior to December 1978 during mine development in the 6 m thick Gemini seam at depths approximating 400 m. Three large bursts each displaced more than 300 tonnes of coal and stone. Two of these which occurred in continuous miner developments, are described and compared. Geological settings, mining strains including induced cleavage and roof failures associated with bursts are described. A shotfiring technique replaced mechanised mining following a major incident at the colliery. Present mining procedures, the apparent improvement in stability of workings and ongoing geotechnical monitoring programme are discussed.
