The design of mine openings and the assessment of their reserve are processes ihicl, require the routine manipulation of considerable amounts of data. A number of computer programs have been assembled to operate in a mini computer in order to provide some mechanical assistance for these processes. The system responds to plain language commands. which allows mining engineers to compute the reserves for a number of possible mining outlines, on an interactive basis. Methods of numerical analysis were used in preference to statistical or qeostatistical techniques.

At the Cominco Ltd plant in Trail, British Columbia, the Betts lead electrorefining operation requires that antimony and arsenic be present in the lead bullion for anode slimes stability control. Until 1986 the antimony and arsenic inputs from concentrates to the Lead Smelter needed to be supplemented with high antimony and arsenic content recycles from the Silver Refinery operation to maintain a satisfactory composition. Subsequently the antimony and arsenic inputs have increased as a result of increasing levels of antimony in Sullivan lead concentrate and the purchase of larger quantities of silver/gold bearing concentrates that inherently have higher antimony and arsenic levels. The increase has exceeded the limits required by the Betts process. It therefore became necessary to install a partial softening process downstream of the Continuous Drossing Furnace to satisfactorily control the bullion composition. Process control and oxygen injection techniques used in the partial softening process are reviewed. Approximately 8 tonnes/day of softening slag are produced having a combined antimony and arsenic content of 25 percent. This slag is reduced in a recently commissioned short rotary furnace followed by vacuum distillation of the metal for recovery of the antimony and arsenic values.

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. During induration of iron ore pellets produced from magnetite concentrates, there are many reactions occurring simultaneously. While the magnetite is being oxidised to hematite, carbonate fluxes are being calcined, leading to the formation of complex oxides. Calcination of fluxes and the formation of calcium and magnesium ferrites and silicates during the preheat stage can influence the magnetite oxidation process. As the calcination reaction proceeds quicker than oxidation at temperatures experienced during the preheat stage (700 - 1200¦C), the bulk flow of CO2 emanating from within the pellet should disrupt the diffusion of O2 to the magnetite reaction as the gas fluxes are similar in magnitude. This increases the time required for the oxidation of the pellet. Using an infrared rapid heating furnace, experiments were performed on heating individual magnetite green balls in an air atmosphere. These experiments showed that time played an important role in the extent of oxidation and calcination and temperature significantly influenced the initial evolution of high temperature phases such as magnesioferrite, calcium ferrites and calcium silicates. Understanding the kinetics of all these reactions for a particular pellet feed, and their interaction, is important for optimising the design of the induration furnace.

The basic methods to remove material from underground mines are to: convey continuously, batch in trucks, or batch in a shaft hoisting system. A critical aspect in shaft hoisting is accurately batch loading the conveyance or skip. During the 20th century, the almost universally accepted method of loading was via a measuring flask. A measured quantity of material was filled into the flask as the conveyance traveled through the shaft and then, when the conveyance arrived at the loading position, it was ædumpedÆ into the skip for hoisting. Two skip loading conveyor systems have been developed in Australia: BHP BillitonÆs Cannington Hoisting System, installed in 1996, is believed to be the first conveyor loading system designed for two skips. Two parallel conveyors were installed with a two-way gate controlling feed onto each belt. Cannington was ideally suited to conveyor loading as the very high ore density and relatively low production rate required a relatively small volumetric storage capacity on the weighed belt. Newcrest MiningÆs Telfer Hoisting System, which is to be commissioned in 2005, consists of a single slewing conveyor loading each skip with 32 tonnes of ore. The development of this system eliminates the two-way transfer, improves the accessibility and minimises the excavation required. While every hoisting system must be considered on its merits, conveyor loading offers significant advantages to the Mining Industry in the 21st century.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

Gold mineralization like other low concentration high value commodities has gained the notoriety of being difficult to sample. This adversely affects the confidence that can be placed in resource estimates and ore reserves. As an example, it is not uncommon to find differences of the order of 30% between duplicates of a single sample sent to two different commercial laborartories. Two halves of drill core generally show marked differences in grade. Again differences of 50% are not uncommon in halved core. In the context of this type of "error" within the base data used for the resource estimate, many of the subtleties of computation methods and expert judgement of resource categories, are almost a case of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. Managers, financiers and consultants must question the quality of the base data upon which resource estimates are made. They must insist that standard and duplicate samples are used to measure the accuracy and precision of commercial analytical laboratories, that sampling practices have been checked for possible bias and give tolerable repeatability. Further they must ensure there can be a realistic confidence in the estimates by correctly using these measures of data quality to quantify risk.

A multicommodity exploration programme was mounted in the 1970s by CRA Exploration Pty. Limited over a major part of the southern Murray Basin in Victoria. Commodities sought were brown and black coal, gold, uranium, diamonds, titanium and zirconium rich heavy minerals, and base metals. An area of 40 000 km2 was held under exploration licences by the Company. Exploration techniques used were literature research, airborne magnetics and gamma ray spectrometry, drilling, and geophysical well logging. Targets were defined in both the Tertiary basin sediments and the underlying Palaeozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks. Although exploration is continuing, large resources of brown coal and low grade titanium rich heavy minerals have already been discovered. Exploration for uranium was abandoned in accordance with statutory requirements. The search for significant resources of the other commodities has not been successful.

This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

A geostatistical study was made of diamond drill hole intersections within 18CC stope block at the C.S.A. Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. The stope block is located in 18CC orebody which is a massive sulphide - multiple vein, Copper-Zinc type, lacking clear definition on gangue mineralogy, base-metal assays and total sulphide considerations. Of the variograms constructed for inter- section width and copper, lead and zinc grades and accumulations, only zinc displayed behaviour amenable to model fitting and kriging procedures. Zinc grades were calcu- lated for sub-blocks comprising the total stope block and comparison with equivalent grades determined by traditional methods showed them to be generally less extreme in the highest and lowest grade sub-blocks. The total-block grades derived by the two methods were almost the same. It is suggested that the failure of copper to show variogram continuity might reflect the difficulty in defining the actual 18CC orebody, a proposition which is supported by the poor continuity in the variogram of horizontal width. In the case of lead the poor continuity may be due to the frequent manner of occurrence of galena as coarse grained patches of limited extent. The results of the study, did not provide a convincing reason to depart from the traditi- onal methods of grade estimation at the C.S.A. Mine.

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". The leaching of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide solutions may be reduced significantly by the passivation of the gold by a surface layer of polymeric aurocyanide. This passivation of the gold is typically countered by the presence of Pb(+2) species in solution, which may be present as an impurity in the solution, or specifically added for this purpose. The speciation and availability of Pb(+2) in typical cyanide leach solutions is illustrated as a function of pH, and the presence of S(-2), S(+6), Cu(+1) and Ag(+1) species. The probable role of the Pb(+2) species in efficient gold leaching is discussed.

Fluid flow, heat transfer and combustion in a nickel flash smelter have been investigated by numerical modelling and flow visualisation. The three-dimensional numerical model incorporates turbulent two-phase fluid dynamics, radiative heat transfer and combustion. The main features include the use of the k-E turbulence model, the Lagrangian tracking of particles, radiative heat transfer based on the spherical harmonics method, and chemical reactions. The predicted flow fields are in good agreement with data obtained from a series of flow visualisation experiments on a cold water model. The interaction mechanism between the fluid flow and the solid particles is examined for a range of particle sizes both with and without injected oil in a series of simulations. The heat transfer in the shaft is dominated by combustion and radiation, whereas the ignition of particles is influenced by the particle size and the added oil. Flow and temperature fields for both gas and solid particles are presented as well as the fraction of sulphur removed from the particles.

The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

Hilton Mine is being developed as an integrated component of the Mount Isa operation, to achieve continuity of silver/lead/zinc production well into the next century. The mine has a chequered history from its discovery in 1947 through several periods of intense development activity, each of which has been curtailed due to the further development of the Isa Mine operation. This era has now passed; to sustain increased production rates at Mount Isa, there is a requirement for Hilton ore in 1989. The decision was made in 1983 to accelerate the programme of Hilton development by installing skip hoisting facilities in the main service shaft (P49), to facilitate the development of the mine to pre-production status. The Hilton development plan provides for the mining of selected orebodies, a broadening of the underground exploration drilling programme, and the establishment of significant mine infrastructure. Several technical challenges have been identified as important. The Hilton orebodies, although occurring in the same rock type as Isa Mine, are more faulted, jointed and intersected by intrusive dykes. The ore is more variable in terms of ore continuity, boundaries, grade and metal distribution and the mineralogy more complex. As a consequence the development of this project consists of a co-ordinated programme of mine exploration and development, rock mechanics investigations and metallurgical research and development work. Production will commence in 1986 at a rate of 1000 t/day using mechanized cut and fill techniques. It is planned to introduce sublevel open stoping and by 1996/97 the production rate will be 2.5 million t/yr.

Most publicity about the copper industry nowa- days is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and poten- tial shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing tech- nology. Copper differs from other widely traded com- modities in that its real cost of production has pro- gressively increased since World War II. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other com- modities is that increases in demand occur less auto- matically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other com- modities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method. However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.
