This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

Gas dynamic phenomena, particularly instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are problems experienced in gassy, highly stressed coal, both usually the result of depth. Diff- erent mining geometries present different opportunities for seam gas to escape, starting from the virgin condition unaffected by mining and ending with the mining of the coal. The mining of the coal varies from entering a virgin seam cross-measure, heading out into virgin seam, advancing longwall faces into virgin seam and extracting developed blocks from large longwall retreating blocks to small pillars. Each method has its particular gass- iness patterns and particular stress patterns, both changing to some extent with time, and changing as mining progresses. Geological structural anomalies are the cause of gas and stress anomalies, causing in turn greater gas and stress manifestations. Pre-drainage of gas from the working seam not only degasifies the coal but causes it to shrink and so may affect stress as well as gas patterns. Unfortunately prior degasification is not all benefit, and there are some d13- advantages to its use. Also although it is possible to degasify places ahead, gassiness will return if drainage holes are shut down or sealed up and other deleterious aspects may be induced. Research should continue into the problem of instantaneous outbursts of coal and Gas.

Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the primary global source of titaniumdioxide which is commonly used as a whitening agent in papermanufacture and a pigment in paint manufacture. In WesternAustralia ilmenite is processed by the Becher process (Becher,1963, Becher et al, 1965) where ilmenite particles are feddirectly into the furnace with coal and heated to form acomposite of elemental iron and TiO2. The mechanism of thecarbothermic reduction of ilmenite has been extensively studied(Grey, Jones and Reid, 1973; Jones, 1973; Grey and Reid, 1974;El-Tawil, Morse and Francis, 1993) and is reasonably wellaccepted.

Bauxite was discovered in the Kimberley in 1965 by an Amax field crew. Reserves of 230 million tons, of bauxite. averaging 47% total alumina on Mitchell Plateau and 980 million tons averaging 36% total alumina on Cape Bougainville have been indicated by the results of drilling and bulk sampling. Laterite which contains the bauxite deposits caps basalt and interbedded sandstone and siltstone of the Carson Volcanics formation. Bauxite on Mitchell Plateau is 3.2 metres thick on average and is underlain successively by nodular ironstone, clay and basalt. The major components of the bauxite are gibbsite,boehmite, hematite and goethite containing some alumina, anatase and clay minerals. Quartz and vanadium oxide are minor constituents. Boehmite and hematite are concentrated near the surface, whereas gibbsite and goethite predominate at depth. The bauxite profile consists of ferru- ginous, pisolitic and gibbsitic zones with increasing depth. Cape Bougainville bauxite is 8.6 metres thick on average and of tubular structure; its mineralogy is relatively uniform..

Recovery of gold by smelting zinc dust concentrate has been carried on at Lake View and Star, Ltd., since July, 1930, when the Merrill-Crowe precipitation plant was first put into operation.Part I describes the development of current gold-room practice, commencing with the clean-up of the MerrillCrowe plant, a procedure that has not materially changed since its inception, and then shows how modifications to straight roasting and smelting became necessary, following a gradual increase in the copper content of the ore treated by the mill.Present smelting practice converts most of the copper into a mixed copper-lead matte, thE sulphur being supplied by the addition of flotation concentrates containing about 35% sulphur as pyrite. The process yields gold bullion of a sufficiently high grade to send to the Royal Mint, but until 1943, suffered from the disadvantage of giving matte and slag by-products high in gold and silver, that were not recovered directly but had to be sent to a smelter.Part Il gives details, of experimental work cnrried out since 1943 which led .to a process for the satisfactory and economic recovery of not only the gold and silver, but also the copper from these, hitherto, troublesome by-products. Nevertheless, incidence of matte in a smelt has always been considered undesirable, and it is hoped that eventually it will be obviated by removing most of the copper from the zinc slime before smelting.Part III indicates the methods by which this might be achieved, and outlines the experimental work that has been done up to the present.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

The introduction of digital communications technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled high bandwidth applications to be applied in the mining industry. Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards have allowed numerous applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One of the many important applications is the tracking of personnel and equipment via RFID Tags. This tracking application has formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System or Collision Avoidance System (Schiffbauer and Mowrey, 2001; Kent, Fischer and Schiffbauer, 2011) thereby improving safety and increasing control in the mining environment. This paper discusses the growth of digital technology as the backbone for communications in underground mining applications. This growth has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ (occurring in the general business world) to be available to mine operators in general and underground mine operators in particular. Mine Site Technologies’ involvement with major mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in developing and supplying their communication systems is also discussed.The latest technical requirements and specifications for communication systems for underground and open cut mines will be reviewed.

Recent advances in ruggedised industrial control system technology and architecture in combination with latest technologies in the fast-evolving 3D LiDAR sensor sector becoming available have enabled the implementation of sophisticated automation algorithms for mining equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers, as published by the authors in the peer reviewed AusIMM 2019 Iron Ore conference proceedings. This paper provides an overview of a second use case for such automation technology in bulk material ports integral to iron ore operations. The real-time 3D machine-vision based port automation system described in this paper was originally developed for the BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point port. The system has seen deployment at other major mining and general ports in Australia, such as at Dalrymple Bay Terminal (DBT) (shown in Figure 1) managed by Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Management (DBIM), Hay Point, Queensland. Australia is now committed to the most significant period of infrastructure investment since the 1960s and the current climate of project finance and public private partnership (PPP) model uncertainty means it is imperative that the affordability and certainty in delivery of infrastructure projects is maximised.In light of the current and forecast levels of infrastructure investment it is worth drawing comparison with a similar period of Australian expansion when the nation’s first railways were constructed. Similarly to over a century ago, we are following a trend in rapid development and are already reaping the inefficiencies that could be avoided with broader technical planning and improved client coordination.The original rail networks were developed by the individual states before they combined to form a Federation of states in 1901. As a result of the adoption of different gauges by 1917 a passenger wanting to travel by train from Brisbane to Perth had to change trains six times.Similarly in 2011, there is little parity between Australian states on the quality requirements (performance specifications) for road tunnels. Differences between states start most significantly with the size of the specified traffic envelopes, thus the size of tunnel required. Where ambiguity and differences exist in project documentation, performance specifi cations (PS) and broad technical requirements for road tunnel projects, any associated risk in interpretation ultimately ends up being incorporated in the bidder’s (constructor’s) final sell price.Whilst not nearly as inconvenient as having to change train at each state border, and largely unnoticed by the general tax paying motorist, this paper examines examples of apparent minor differences in Australia’s recently constructed road tunnels to highlight the differences in road tunnel specifications.The paper identifies how these small differences manifest themselves in major price penalties between projects and further, highlights the need for further specification review, refinement and standardisation across road tunnel jurisdictions to increase road tunnel affordability.

The relevance of ore-dressing mineralogical investigations to developing and improving metallurgical flow-sheets is discussed and examples are given of the application of such studies to various types of ores and mill products (Au, Cu-Sn, Ni and Sn). The mineralogical investigations described illustrate (a) assessment of the feasibility of ore pre-concentration by heavy-media cyclone separation, (b) evaluation of the potential applicability of various metallurgical treatment processes to an ore, and (c) characterization of mill products to assess circuit efficiency and to guide circuit modifications.

A methodology for the inversion of a scaled charge weight superposition model to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) has been examined. The inversion involves two steps: first simulated annealing is used to get an initial estimate of the model parameters; and second, these parameters are used as input to a quasi-Newton non-linear optimisation method, used to refine the value of the parameters. The methodology recovers the three required parameters (two charge weight scaling parameters and a time window width) and does this directly from a single production blast for a given point of interest. It has been tested on a synthetic example and recovered the input model parameters successfully in the presence of introduced noise with a coefficient of variation ranging up to ten per cent. Another test used the vibration measurements of three tunnel blasts monitored during the construction of the Citybanan tunnel in Stockholm. In this case, the three model parameters are found from one blast and for a given point of interest, and the PPV at the same point of interest is predicted for the second and third blast fired in the same vicinity as the first blast. The three blasts used different firing sequences. The predicted PPV limits use a confidence interval determined from the scatter in the peak levels obtained from the single calibration blast. The methodology was able to predict an upper bound for the PPV in 21 of the 26 tunnel blast vibrations studied. These predictions improve on a previous study involving the same model but which did not use the inversion process above. Given this reasonable success, further testing of the method on other data sets and alternative forward prediction models is recommended.CITATION:Lawlor-O’Neill, M L and Spathis, A T, 2015. The Kanmantoo copper mine is located in the Adelaide Hills area of South Australia and is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources (HGO). The mine is a drill and blast, truck and shovel operation mining sulfide (chalcopyrite) ore located in chloritised andalusite biotite schist. The initial Kanmantoo open pit operation occurred in the 1970s, before falling copper prices closed the mine. In 2010 the mine was reopened by HGO and the Kavanagh cutback of the Kanmantoo pit was undertaken. The Spitfire, Nugent and Emily Star satellite pits were also mined through to 2015 before the latest steep wall Giant pit design was developed to take mining out to 2019.There are no major fault structures and only two significant shear zone structures exposed in the open pit walls. The main Garnet Andalusite Biotite Schist (GABS) unit is quite competent so the pit designs have therefore mainly been controlled by four distinct joint sets. This paper is a case study on the influence of the joint regime on the wall stability of the main GABS unit and how a better understanding of the joint regime and the use of rock reinforcement has allowed the steep wall design to be adopted.The paper also describes the remote geotechnical mapping and slope monitoring techniques used to manage the rockfall risks associated with the steep walled slope design.CITATION:Hutchison, B J, Chambers, J, Gannon, S and Oko-oboh, D, 2017. This paper summarises the influence of slurry rheology on the grinding throughput of batch laboratory and continuous plant-scale mills operating in open and closed circuit configurations. The results of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals are demonstrated. An underlying rheological explanation of the above factors is offered which involves tying the specific rates of breakage that are occurring in the mill with the specific rheological character that the slurry is exhibiting at any given set of operating conditions. Some industrial scale operating guidelines are presented which have proven useful in increasing the net pro- duction capability of grinding circuits.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. This paper presents the results of in-situ and laboratory investigations into a mining method which utilises conventional continuous mining techniques to carry out two passes in thick coal seams, resulting in the development of stable pillars with relatively small width dimensions and heights up to 6 m. Geotechnical investigations included structural mapping, brightness logging and standard laboratory testing. Virgin stress was measured using overcoring techniques. Two approaches to pillar design were used in the study. These were; pillar design based on empirical formulae and laboratory testing, and pillar disign using calibrated mathematical models. A trial panel was developed at 300 m depth to study pillar deformation and stress changes due to mining. The extent of rib deformation was studied using borescopes and extensometers. In-situ geotechnical measurements were used to calibrate displacement discontinuity and finite element mathematical models of the coal seam. These models were then used to predict the behaviour of a small panel of pillars which were to be developed to 6 m height. The mining method was shown to be feasible provided adequate rib support was installed. The benefit of rib support was found to be two-fold, in that it increased confinement of the pillar in zones of low horizontal stress, while reducing horizontal stress relaxation in zones of high horizontal virgin stress. The possiblity of roof control by designing the small pillars to yield on retreat is discussed.

The operation of copper flotation circuit is a challenging task for the site metallurgists and plant operators. To optimise the performance requires meeting both grade and recovery objectives. These plants have numerous pieces of equipment that are monitored by hundreds of sensors. The challenge is to review these sensors and adjust the numerous control inputs to maintain peak operational efficiency for extended periods. There is also a need to respond to equipment failure. These challenges lead to in operational inefficiencies and can result in a reduction in revenue.This paper details an overview of an operational assistance tool implemented at Newcrest's Telfer plant’s copper flotation circuit. This tool is based on a digital twin of the plant. A digital twin is a model of the plant that is simulated in parallel to the normal plant operation. It is fed with the plant data in real time to provide a prediction of plant operation. The model outputs directly generate the metrics that are used to assess the plant performance, and these are compared with the metrics calculated from the actual plant’s operation. Deviations between the model estimate and the plant’s actual performance are used to gather insight into plant health and alert the operator to poor performance. The operators gather more information regarding the root cause by reviewing the model’s inputs that have deviated outside their normal operating range. An evaluation of the plant performance, following the commissioning of the digital twin, showed an overall reduction of acid soluble copper in the tails.This paper discusses the implementation of a digital twin of the plant to monitor plant performance during live operation. It will include details on data collection and cleansing, data reduction techniques, model development, and real-time implementation. The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.
