The use of High Rate Thickeners has gained wide acceptance in the mineral treatment industries. The design of these units is characterized by an efficient deaeration and flocculation chamber, and introduction of the flocculated feed solids into a preformed floc bed zone. By these means the settling process is accelerated and consequently High Rate Thickeners achieve a significantly higher throughput per unit area than conventional thickeners.   The object of a control system on a High Rate Thickener (HRT), as on a conventional thickener, is to obtain the required underflow density and overflow clarity at all feed conditions. The feed conditions which may vary include volumetric and mass feed rate, pulp density, particle size and particle type. A conventional thickener has a large volume and cross sectional area, and changes in performance occur slowly û the operator has time to observe and react to these changes to maintain control. On a HRT, there is a much reduced residence time and therefore control parameters need to be reset more frequently. Although manual control is possible, the use of automatic control systems is therefore desirable to avoid excessive operator attention, while optimizing control of density and clarity. Automatic control of a conventional thickener is usually achieved by an underflow density loop which regulates the rate of withdrawal of underflow. A turbidity meter is sometimes used to measure overflow clarity and regulate the addition of a coagulant or polymer flocculant. These measures are not adequate on a HRT, because they would not give optimum control and could lead to excessive flocculant use. To achieve optimum operation in a HRT, the floc bed level should be maintained above the feed inlet point in the thickener. This bed level has become the key variable around which most control systems have been designed. However, a number of problems have occurred which has resulted in poor control, or only partial control of thickener performance. We will describe some of these problems, and a solution which is simple and effective.

"Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. Platiniferous horizons such as the Merensky Reef that are mined chiefly for their PGE contents constitute one end member of a continuum of Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits; Ni-(Cu) sulfide deposits in which the PGE may or may not be by-products represent the other end of this continuum. Although it has long been thought that PGE-rich sulfides can only be developed by magma mixing in large magma chambers, new PGE data for the Bushveld Complex suggests an alternate model to account for origin of mineralization in the worldÆs most important Pt producer. Briefly, this model suggests that PGE-rich sulfides were initially deposited at depth below the Bushveld Complex as a result of interaction of a S-undersaturated mantle magma with S-rich crustal rocks. These PGE-rich sulfides were subsequently re-dissolved by a second magma, which introduced the PGE into the Bushveld Complex magma chamber, where the PGE-rich reefs were formed due to cooling of these magmas. If this model is correct, it means that large layered mafic/ultramafic intrusions are not a prerequisite for the formation of economic PGE-rich deposits. Exploration for Merensky Reef-type PGE deposits can be greatly facilitated by documenting variations in the background PGE contents of non-mineralized rocks collected on traverses across mafic/ultramafic intrusions; the mineralized horizons occur at cross-overs in ratios such as Pd/Cu, Pd/Se and Pd/S.

Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Australia identified a number of issues in regard to the skill levels, labour turnover and productivity of our service technicians. In 1994 we were experiencing a labour turnover rate of 42 per cent per annum amongst our technicians. Exit interviews were held with each individual and one of the major areas of dissatisfaction was the degree of product training provided on our equipment, compared to what is required to be competent across the range of our products. These tradespersons were prepared to accept the reduced remuneration that an OEM offers, for the benefit of comprehensive, professional training that, in theory, could be provided. The truth is that we were achieving approximately 40 per cent of our target for training hours because of the demands of field service, pre-deliveries, etc. So, the summary was the same as the industry was experiencing at that time because of skilled labour shortages, production demands, etc people were employed and thrown in at the deep end. A recipe for failure that will be successful every time.

THE object of the air-tight stopping is either to prevent a current of fresh air from getting into the fire area, or to prevent an escape of fumes and gases from the fire area into the workings of the mine. In the former case all is "plain sailing," but in the latter case there are certain difficulties to be overcome.In the Broken Hill Proprietary mine there were two styles of stopping used during the last fire-brick and bag and the following were the chief points that determined the use of one in preference to the other:-If the required stopping were to be more or less permanent, bricks were used, also if the area to be blocked were large-bricks being so much lighter and easier to handle than bags filled with -skimps. If, however, the air contained much gas, a bag stopping was put up. Great difficulty was experienced in getting essentially surface men, such as bricklayers, to work where there was the; slightest trace of gas; miners, however, would willingly do the work, and a bag stopping could be built without skilled labour.In old drives and gangways, where there was the liability of settlement, the bag stoppings were preferable to brick. The slightest movement around the sides or foundations of the latter would cause cracks, thus rendering the brick stopping useless;whereas, in the former, there was a certain amount of elasticity.

Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

TheSan Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t Au, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70 - 100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the 'subvolcanic complex'. At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine.   Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry- related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980s: 1. hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2. æRed SeaÆ type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3. ferromanganese nodules; 4. concentrations of metallic sulphides (æBlack SmokersÆ); and 5. cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts.   Since then, the so called æWhite SmokersÆ, containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. These horizons have not only a theoretical, but also a principal economic significance.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

Devitrification of a glassy volcanic ash equivalent to an alkaline trachyte in composition has resulted in the formation of an interstratified illite-montmorillonite with an 1:1\1 content of 1:4 as the principal clay mineral.A high concentration of potassium ions and a deficiency of magnesium ions favoured the formation of the potassium-bentonite.A poorly ordered mica mineral, equivalent to illite, was produced by weathering of potassic feldspar. Subsequent degradation of the illite through the loss of potassium was responsible for the formation of several interstratified minerals with very approximate 1:1\1 contents of 4: I as minor components.Other authigenic minerals present in small amounts were u-cristobalite, sepiolite, and the zeolite clinopitolite.The non-swelling character of the potassium-bentonite makes it economically unattractive...

Smarter Gravity Separation Using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig With relatively coarse grained and easy-to-process ore sources rapidly dwindling, smarter techniques are becoming more necessary for the continued success of mineral processing operations, while increasing environmental pressures also require more environmentally friendly solutions. Gravity concentration has long been employed to pre-concentrate minerals using water, reducing or eliminating the need for less environmentally friendly processing techniques such as flotation. Conventional gravity recovery devices however, operate in a 1 g environment with limited efficiency in the separation of fine particles of heavy and gangue minerals. More recently developed centrifugal concentrators operate in a multi-g environment and enable finer heavy minerals to be recovered, but also exhibit limited separation efficiency due to the separations being based on solid particle mass differentials. Further enhancement of gravity separation has been achieved using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ), which also operates in a multi-g environment, but separates minerals on the basis of specific gravity differentials, using 'ragging' media and a pulsation mechanism, which maximises the effect of differential particle accelerations. This enables the efficient separation/recovery of minerals down to a particle size of ~6 ¦m and/or separation of minerals with a low specific gravity differential. This paper presents details on the principals of operation of the KCJ, recent improvements in the technology and recent developments in modular KCJ plants, as well as some KCJ application areas, which offer smarter, environmentally friendly processing opportunities for the mineral processing industry.

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada . The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analysed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Project delivery strategies are determined by project context, business case requirements, scale of project, market conditions, ownerÆs capability and preference, contractorÆs experience, resource and skill availability, project location and type of project or facility.Successful project management requires the setting of coherent, effective and realistic business objectives and success criteria. The management team needs to lead, prioritise, resource, align, plan, track and communicate the processes that enable the realisation of these business objectives and success criteria.For any given project there is a unique balance between selection of a simple project delivery strategy that minimises interfaces and a complex strategy that necessarily engages the use of expertise and experience from numerous parties. The right balance for a project between these "book-end cases" is a function of how the project owner or managing contractor defines its objectives and chooses to manage risk, cost, schedule and project quality, in the context of the conditions affecting the project.Selection of an effective project delivery strategy requires a detailed appreciation of the range of external and internal environmental / shaping factors which influence the project. These factors include the project constraints imposed by the business, market or operational environments and the selection of an effective mix of primary (head contract), secondary (mix of vertical and horizontal packages) and tertiary (type of individual contract) strategies. The selection of the primary, secondary and tertiary strategies also shapes the project, the size and responsibilities of the ownerÆs team and the framework for delivery of outcomes.How does an owner or prime contractor decide? What is the optimum for a given project? Those with operations management backgrounds will have different views to those with project and construction management backgrounds.Is the simplest practical approach the best approach? Each and every interface needs to be managed.The owner will want a very experienced team that is engaged directly with the owner. The team will have a track record of successfully performing projects using contractors skilled in their respective disciplines and selected using competitive tendering on brilliantly designed scopes of work and good contract terms, with a fully defined project scope and appropriate schedule, for which all significant risks have been addressed and no scope changes are outstanding. Budget and schedule will be expected to have been developed with a full understanding of the scope, situation, risk management requirements etc.The problem is that these conditions rarely exist. The challenge in selection of a project delivery strategy is to resolve how best to address the inadequacies between the ideal case and the present reality. Efficacy of Enhanced Gravity Separator in Processing Indian Iron Ore Slime The slime sample was subjected to concentration using Falcon concentrator for their enrichment. The effects of three important variables, eg bowl rotation frequency, back water flow rate and per cent solid were studied on the process performance. Increasing the rotation of the Falcon bowl, enable more material to the underflow by increasing the yield, whereas, the iron content decreases steadily with increasing the rotation of the bowl. The increase in the back water flow effectively removes the clay materials from the underflow at the expense of the yield. Similarly, increasing the per cent solid concentration in the feed produces a better product both in terms of yield and Fe content. Results show that EGS/Falcon can be used for processing Indian iron ore slime and producing pellet grade concentrate.

Bioleaching of Weathered Saprolite - Heavy Metal Adaptation Mechanisms of Aspergillus foetidus Nickel laterite ores remain important to the future supply of Ni and Co as they contain the bulk of known nickel and cobalt reserves (80 per cent and 90 - 95 per cent respectively). Current commercial extractions of Ni and Co from nickel laterite ores are energy intensive and operational costs are high. Microbial leaching of oxide ores has the potential to offer a much needed step-change in the technology for processing laterite ores. Biological leaching of low-grade nickel laterite is based on a non-traditional leaching of oxide minerals using heterotrophic micro-organisms. The organisms solubilise metals by excreting organic acids; these acids then form complexes with heavy metals. Optimisation of the process in in-situ application, however, has been hampered by the toxicity of the heavy metals that are being leached by the organisms. Our recent study has shown that organisms are able to develop tolerance towards heavy metals by adaptation. This study examined the extracellular metal detoxification mechanisms of A. foetidus in 0.2 per cent (wt/v) to 0.7 per cent (wt/v) of weathered saprolite ore. To support our analysis, FTIR, CHNS and microscopy were used to confirm the participation of specific functional groups in the extracellular detoxification process.
