Thermodynamic calculations predict the species vaporizing from metal-oxide mixtures when reliable free energy functions, enthalpies of formation, and dissociation energies are available for the possible gaseous and condensed oxide components. Calculations of the oxygen to metal ratio in the vapor phase compared with the oxygen to metal ratio in a liquid metal saturated with oxide impurity are presented The possibility of purifying metals contaminated with oxide by vacuum melting or by distillation is discussed. Kinetic considerations affecting rates are neglected. IN recent years extensive information has been obtained on the thermodynamic stability of gaseous oxides of metals due to a variety of new types of measurement. Perhaps the greatest amount of information has come from the application of mass spec-trometry to the study of high-temperature vapors.' In many instances oxides of quite unusual oxidation states are found to be important in the high-temperature vapors. At low temperatures the standard free energy change for a reaction as given by the equation ?F° = ?H° - T?S° is determined primarily by the AH" value. However, at higher temperatures where the value of T in the T?S° term is large, the entropy term becomes equal to or greater than the AH term. At low temperatures only reactions for which AH is negative or only slightly endothermic are of importance. This restricts the main equilibrium species largely to those with completed octets or those with the principle oxidation number of the element. At

The mining companies on the page opposite are among the elite industrial 500 in Fortune magazine's June Directory of U. S. firms that rang up the largest dollar sales volume in 1967. The companies are listed according to their 1967 sales rank, which is given along with their 1966 rank for comparison. Mergers played an important role in the addition and deletion of several companies to the list. Tenneco, Occidental Petroleum and Gulf & Western Industries made the list of mining companies by their purchases of Kern County Land, Island Creek Coal, and New Jersey Zinc, respectively. In turn, these three companies disappeared from the list. General Aniline & Film acquired Ruberoid, and Ideal Cement is now a part of Ideal Basic Industries -a name change only. Only two companies, St. Joseph Lead and U.S. Smelting, Refining & Mining, were actually displaced from the list. The mining industry increased its sales 14.5%, placing fourth among the 22 industrial classifications listed in the Directory. However, among the ten biggest losers in sales were four mining companies-Kennecott Copper, -33.8% ; Asarco, -21.8% ; Amax, -16.5%; and Anaconda, -15.1%.-which was mostly a result of the copper strike, except for Amax which suffered strikes at its molybdenum and aluminum operations. Mining heads the list of industries for return on sales and assets per employee, while it rests at the bottom with respect to sales per dollar of invested capital.

THE object of this investigation was to determine the distribution of chemical elements within a large, killed alloy-steel ingot, by sulphur printing and quantitative chemical analysis. With regard to segregation in steel ingots, the factors of melting practice, pouring temperatures, mold design, etc., and the mechanics of solidification and its attendant functions, have been the subject of intensive study over a period of years by many investigators. Notable among these is the Sub-Committee of the No. 5 Committee of the British Iron and Steel Institute. For an exposition 0f the many problems awaiting the researcher on the heterogeneity of steel ingots, the methods of attacking these problems, together with some of the answers, the reader is referred to the nine reports and numerous papers of that committee and its membership. STEELMAKING DATA Melt.-The heat was made in a 70-ton direct arc-type basic electric furnace. Furnace charge consisted of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, most of it in the form of heavy mill scrap. All of the scrap was charged cold. The standard double-slag method was employed, the heat being finished under a strong carbide slag. Aluminum was used as the deoxidizing agent. Tapping temperature, as observed with an optical pyrometer, was 3000°F. Detail of Mold and Ingot Size.-Details of the ingot mold and the ingot itself are given in Fig. I. Teeming.-Teeming temperature of the subject ingot as observed with an optical pyrometer was 2830°F. The ingot was top-poured directly through a 1 ½ in. nozzle and required 7 min., 44 sec. to fill up to the hot top. An additional 2 min., 30 sec. were required to fill the hot top. The ingot was stripped hot and charged with the remainder of the heat into an annealing furnace. There it was given the standard annealing cycle used for these ingots. Subsequent heat-treatments are described elsewhere in this paper. SECTIONING AND PREPARATION FOR SULPHUR PRINTING Because of previous favorable experience in sectioning ingots up to 21 ½ in. square with an oxyacetylene torch, it was decided to use this method to section the subject ingot. The ingot was preheated to 900°F. for 12 hr. It was then placed on a steel bed in a horizontal position so that the longitudinal axis was level and parallel to the track of the motor-driven torch carrier. Two cuts were made, one 2 in. above the longitudinal axis and the other 2 in. below. The time required to make each cut was approximately 75 min. The cutting operation is shown in Figs. z and 3. The 4-in. thick slab was mmediately charged into a furnace standing at 1200°F.

The opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was re-deposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May16 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to a1pha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,a in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed during the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (As2O3),

The importance of cold-working in the fabrication of metals is in marked contrast with our ignorance as to the nature of the accompanying internal changes. The failure of the usual methods of testing to provide a consistent picture of these internal changes has given the incentive for the present program of investigating the effect of cold-working upon the internal friction of metals measured at small strain amplitudes. It has previously been shown1,2,3, that the internal friction introduced by cold-work is removed by annealing at comparatively low temperatures. In the present paper the following additional factors are investigated: (I) frequency of measurement, (2) amount of cold-work, (3) temperature of measurement. Special care was taken to minimize the internal friction due to causes other than cold-work. The present paper is purely experimental, the authors believing that any conclusions drawn from this work as to the nature of the internal changes accompanying cold-work would be premature.'l PrEpaRations oF Specimens In this study of cold-work it was desirable to eliminate as far as possible all other sources of internal friction. One disturbing source is the lack of temperature equilibrium between adjacent crystallites of a vibrating specimen.4 Temperature equilibrium is aided by small grain size and by the use of low-frequency vibrations. Unless unduly long specimens are used, low frequencies can be obtained only in transverse vibrations. But in transverse vibrations a second source of internal friction is present, that arising from transverse thermal currents.5 The effect of these may be reduced by increasing the transverse dimensions. The grain size and transverse dimensions of the specimens were thus so chosen as to render the vibrations simultaneously nearly isothermal with respect to intercrystalline thermal currents, and nearly adiabatic with respect to transverse thermal currents. The material for this investigation was a 70-30 brass, part of the same lot of material that was used for some earlier studies on the effect of strain on proportional limit.10 It had the following composition: copper, 70.59 per cent; zinc, 29.39; lead, 0.01; iron, 0.01. This material was received from the brass mill in the form of 3/4-in. rod, cold-drawn to final size by a 65 per cent reduction of area from material that had been annealed to give a grain size of 0.060 mm, Rods of appropriate length were annealed for 2 hr. at 400°C. and cooled in air. The annealed rods (grain size, 0.012 mm.) were then stretched in a tension-testing machine, using special grips1' to ensure axial application of the load. The rate

Fundamentally, slag control in acid open-hearth steelmaking cannot be considered from any different viewpoint than can that in basic open-hearth melting. The same laws of mass action and distribution apply in both cases, so that while most, if not all, of the recent intensive study of slag-metal reactions have been carried on in basic furnaces the principles evolved are nevertheless applicable to acid open-hearth steelmaking and it is therefore not our intention to discuss the various possible chemical reactions in the slag and between slag and metal. The points we have to carry in mind, in considering acid melting practice, are the differences in the type of steels produced and the difference in the chemistry of both the steel and the slag. The acid furnace is used to produce, let us not say "quality" steel, for, after all, a "quality" steel for one purpose is not a "quality" steel for another, but steels that require acid melting practice to be of proper "quality." Steels that are required to have high physical properties in tests taken transversely from forgings are peculiarly the product of acid furnaces. In this class may be placed various ordnance materials, notably gun forgings and projectiles and large commercial forgings requiring high transverse ductility. Forgings requiring an extremely hard surface, polished and free from imperfections, are also typical acid-steel products. Of course, such forgings can be made of basic open-hearth steel, but not with the same assurance of success. At the start, the preparation of the slag in the acid and basic furnaces differs. Lime is charged in the beginning of a basic heat to form a slag, but in the acid furnace nothing is added for the special purpose of producing a slag when the heat is melted down. The result is that the acid furnace has much less volume of slag than the basic. The slag formed upon melting down is made up almost entirely of the oxides of elements contained in the metallic charge, notably oxides of iron, manganese and silicon, the amount of silica being augmented somewhat by erosion of the furnace lining. A typical acid open-hearth slag, when the bath is completely melted, will have an analysis about as follows: CaO, 3.40 per cent; SiO2, 51.9; Fe2O3, 1.25 ; FeO, 28.86; Al2o3, 1.82; MnO, 12.22. The high iron oxide content of the slag gives it a black appearance. Previous determinationl,2,3 of the texture of magnesium and its alloys have shown only slight variations in the principal features of the structure. This investigation presents pole figures for magnesium and two of its alloys, in which differences of some magnitude will be shown. Schmid and Wassermann have considered the texture of magnesium in analogy with that of zinc—also a hexagonal lattice. Whereas the zinc texture is said to be derived primarily through basal slip and secondarily through {IO2}† twinning, the {102} twinning is considered impossible at the later stages of the rolling in magnesium because of its smaller axial ratio. This state of affairs appears reasonable for pure magnesium, but for alloy textures the situation is more complex. A double orientation similar to that found in zinc has been reported by J. D. Hanawalt,4 and the addition of small amounts of calcium to magnesium and its alloys to produce a double texture was noted by J. C. McDonald.5 The pole figures of this investigation, using an improved X-ray technique, show these various textures. The dependence of directional properties of rolled sheet on modifications of texture is well recognized. Correlation of physical properties with existing texture should be even more significant if quantitative valuations are attached to the various areas on the pole figures. Such a quantitative technique is developed herein. Experimental Method Two alloys were used, besides high-purity magnesium. In each case, the metal was extruded to bars 1/2 in. thick and hot-rolled to a thickness of about 0.075 in. It had been established previously that such a reduction was more than sufficient to eliminate the extruded structure. The rolling proceeded in the same direction as that of the extrusion, without any cross rolling. The temperatures corresponded to normal commercial practice, averaging around 600°F. A unique method of preparing the sample was developed in this work. Instead of using a flat specimen, a stem of the metal was cut out of the rolled sheet in the desired direction (rolling direction) as shown in Fig. I. From a sheet of 0.075 to 0.065-in. gauge, the stem was cut to a square cross section with a jeweler's saw, rounded with a file and polishing paper to a diameter of 0.060 in. and evenly etched in dilute hydrochloric acid to a diameter of 0.038 + 0.001 in. In this way, a cylinder of the original sheet with its axis in the desired direction was produced. By using this type of specimen for the pin-point pictures, any variance in the absorption of the diffracted beam at the various angular settings of the specimen, was completely eliminated.*

The reactively sputtered silicon dioxide capacitor -was developed for use in the monolithic integrated circuit, thereby requiring the capacitor to be fabricated on an oxidized silicon slice. The silicon dioxide film is formed by reactively sputtering silicon in a 50 pct Ar-50 pct 0, atmosphere and the physical properties are indistinguishable from silica. A practical upper limit of capacitance per unit area of 0.25 pf per sq mil is reached with the capacitors fabricated from the Si0, film. Methods shown to enhance this value are double stacking the thin-film capacitors and addition of aluminum to the silicon cathode during sputtering to form an aluminosilicate dielectric. A major contribution to the field of diffused integrated circuits would be the addition of auxiliary passive devices for replacement of diffused passive devices which are currently being fabricated for many integrated circuits. This accomplishment would increase the flexibility of the diffusion process in order to concentrate more on transistor parameters rather than on fabricating diffused resistors and capacitors. To pursue this technique, a thin-film SiOz capacitor was developed which has _ proven applicable to many integrated circuits. Although the SiOl capacitor has an application, the major deterrent from extending the integrated circuit into many useful areas such as low-frequency linear application is the low dielectric constant of SiO, and the low usable capacitance in an integrated circuit. This paper will cover the sputtering techniques used for forming the SiO, film, the physical and electrical properties of sputtered SiO,, and yield information concerning the application of these capacitors to integrated circuits. REACTIVE SPUTTERING Reactive sputtering is simply the sputtering of a metal or semiconductor in glow discharge in the presence of a reactive gas. The material to be sputtered is seen in Fig. 1 as the cathode of the system and is bombarded with positively charged ions of the ambient gas. In this investigation, the ambient gas is composed of 50 pct Ar and 50 pct O2 at a pressure of approximately 2.5 X l0-' Torr. The ions are accelerated toward the cathode in the cathode dark space by the electric field and upon striking the cathode effect a momentum energy transfer to the surface atoms. The transferred energy is sufficient to dislodge a surface atom or atoms and these particles diffuse through the glow discharge to the collector or anode. Several mechanisms of oxidation in the reaction chamber can be considered during reactive sputtering. 1) The surface of the cathode is oxidized and the oxide is subsequently sputtered. 2) Oxidation and sputtering occur simultaneously. 3) Sputtering of the cathode material is followed

Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. '. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

THE importance of cold-working in the fabrication of metals is in marked contrast with our ignorance as to the nature of the accompanying internal changes. The failure of the usual methods of testing to provide a consistent picture of these internal changes has given the incentive for the present program of investigating the effect of cold-working upon the internal friction of metals measured at small strain amplitudes. It has previously been shown1,2,3, that the internal friction introduced by cold-work is removed by annealing at comparatively low temperatures. In the present paper the following additional factors are investigated: (I) frequency of measurement, (2) amount of cold-work, (3) temperature of measurement. Special care was taken to minimize the internal friction due to causes other than cold-work. The present paper is purely experimental, the authors believing that any conclusions drawn from this work as to the nature of the internal changes accompanying cold-work would be premature." PREPARATIONS OF SPECIMENS In this study of cold-work it was desirable to eliminate as far as possible all other sources of internal friction. One disturbing source is the lack of temperature equilibrium between adjacent crystallites of a vibrating specimen.4 Temperature equilibrium is aided by small grain size and by the use of low-frequency vibrations. Unless unduly long specimens are used, low frequencies can be obtained only in transverse vibrations. But in transverse vibrations a second source of internal frictions is present, that arising from transverse thermal currents.5 The effect of these may be reduced by increasing the transverse dimensions. The grain size and transverse dimensions of the specimens were thus so chosen as to render the vibrations simultaneously nearly isothermal with respect to intercrystalline thermal currents, and nearly adiabatic with respect to transverse thermal currents. The material for this investigation was a 70-30 brass, part of the same lot of material that was used for some earlier studies on the effect of strain on proportional limit.10 It had the following composition: copper, 70.59 per cent; zinc, 29.39; lead, 0.01; iron, 0.01. This material was received from the brass mill in the form of 3/4-in. rod, cold-drawn to final size by a 65 per cent reduction of area from material that had been annealed to give a grain size of 0.060 mm. Rods of appropriate length were annealed for 2 hr. at 400°C. and cooled in air. The annealed rods (grain size, 0.012 mm.) were then stretched in a tensiontesting machine, using special grips10 to ensure axial application of the load. The rate

Selecting efficient machinery for an underground mining operation is a highly skilled art that still depends largely on human judgment and experience. In a coal mine, for example, there is no better way to predict the results of operating with a cutting machine or a continuous miner than to go underground with a sharp-pointed miner's pick. The trained eye can detect the depth of point penetration, cleavage planes, roof and floor strata, and many other conditions impossible to determine in a laboratory. Even so, however, an entirely new set of conditions may lie unexposed just a few feet behind the solid face. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from a solid. Consequently, the selection of mineral extraction machinery and systems must be based on results obtained elsewhere under apparently similar conditions. A recent study of the problem of equipment and system analysis was conducted in the coal mining regions of West Virginia. This state was chosen for study because it afforded representative sampling. The 172 coal mines investigated ecompassed seam heights ranging from less than 30 in. to over 84 in. and covered virtually all known coal mining conditions except two. The exceptions are the extreme pitch of coal seams in the western United States and British Columbia and the "bumps" encountered in the Rocky Mountains. Both of these extreme conditions are worthy of individual study.

ONE of the most prominent features of our present-day industrial development is the ever-increasing demand put upon materials of con-struction. Engineering ingenuity, within the past 25 years, has been unusually active, and in some fields at least engineers frankly say that engineering design has progressed as far as the limitations imposed by the properties of the present materials of construction will permit. Consequently, they are today demanding improvement in their working materials and seeking new ones, through the aid; of which the present limitations of design may be overcome. The activity of this search is evident in all fields, but it is particularly so in that of structural materials required to be resistant to corrosion. The corrosion resistance of metals and alloys is never absolute and all-inclusive; a particular alloy will withstand some corrosive conditions well and fail utterly tinder others. Furthermore; other properties, physical and mechanical, required in-conjunction with corrosion resistance vary considerably for different commercial applications. One wants a soft, ductile sheet metal resistant to atmospheric corrosion; another, a high-strength- alloy resistant to sulfuric acid. The last decade has witnessed active and definite progress in the development of high-strength, corrosion-resisting alloys. In June, 1924, a symposium by the American Society for Testing Materials, on Corro-sion-Resistant, Heat-resistant and Electrical-resistance Alloys, disclosed no less than 60 commercial alloys the properties of which were described as being suitable for industrial service where corrosion resistance

INCE1 proposed that electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles was responsible for slime-coating. Del Giudice2 postulated the metathetic formation of a cementing compound. Wark3 suggested that prevention of slime-coating was related to peptization of the slime. [ ] In the experiments of Table I the technique employed was essentially that of del Giudice, with the difference that the particle was examined under a film of water rather than dry.4 In general, the polished particle was agitated for 2 min. in a pulp consisting of 12.5 grams of the slime (-200 mesh) and 50 c.c. of distilled water, washed in three baths of distilled water, and examined at 220 diameters with the Leitz Ultropak. Observations of Brownian movement were made at 850 diameters with dark-field illumination. Several of these experiments do not jibe with the metathesis theory. According to published solubilities,5,6 the lead salts of the anions in experiments c through g are more insoluble than lead carbonate, there- [ ] fore should prevent the formation of lead carbonate on the galena surface. In experiment i the calcium oxalate, which presumably was on the calcite surfaces, should have permitted the formation of a lead carbonate cement by virtue of its greater solubility. Experiments j through m show that the addition of lime accelerates the deposition of quartz onto a galena surface. The writer is unable to postulate a satisfactory cementing compound, according to the metathesis theory, to explain this effect. IT is known qualitatively that the recrystallization behavior of platinum is dependent upon the amount and particularly the nature of impurities present, the amount of prior cold-work and the annealing time and temperature, but published data are limited. A study of the effects of cold-work and annealing temperature on the hardness of a sample of very pure platinum was undertaken to supply part of this information. CONCLUSIONS 1. The platinum used in the experiments had a probable platinum content of 99.99+ per cent, and had the following mechanical properties in the completely softened condition: Vickers hardness number, 39.4; ultimate tensile strength, 19,340 lb. per sq. in.; proportional limit, very low; elongation, 37.5 per cent in 2 inches. 2. The effect of cold-rolling on the hardness is shown in Fig. 1. The hardness increases rapidly up to 10 to 15 per cent reduction and more slowly up to about 75 per cent reduction, beyond which it increases more rapidly. 3. The recrystallization temperatures for a 15-min. anneal, after cold-rolling 19, 39.5, 50.8, 66, 80.5 and 89.5 per cent reduction in thickness, are approximately 765°, 700°, 635°, 600°, 545° and 425°C., respectively. 4. The recrystallized grain size of this platinum is a function of the percentage of cold reduction, being larger the lower the percentage of cold-work. 5. Little or no grain growth resulted from subjecting recrystallized samples to higher temperatures or annealing for longer times.

In the second half of the 19th century, bimetallism progressively was replaced by gold standard. After World War I and the 1931-33 depression, gold was mainly reserved for official international transactions and internal use was restricted. Changes since 1971 have shrunk official international use of gold. International payments deficits and surpluses are now financed by Private and official credit, rarely by gold. This historical review covers evolution of: (1) internal and external private use, (2) internal official use, (3) external official use, (4) its role in the International Monetary Fund, and (5) use as unit of account. For this paper I have tried to take a longer perspective than is usually possible, and to look, even if very briefly, at the changing relationship of gold to the monetary system over the last 200 years or so. There are, I believe, some long-term trends, continuing down to the present day. These trends have seen gold replaced by some form of paper assets in one monetary function after another. These past trends may help us to understand where gold stands now, and possibly will throw some light on the future. Because it seems to me that gold in the past has performed various functions related closely or marginally to money, I have divided this rapid historical review into several sections: (1) the internal and external private use of gold, (2) the internal official use of gold, (3) the external official use of gold, (4) gold and the International Monetary Fund, and (5)gold as a unit of account.
